Stage 1 Excursion 9
Our 2018 Athletics carnival was a great success. Thank you to all our school community members who came along to see students do their best and support the carnival. The track side BBQ was a great fundraiser for our P&C and it was fantastic to see so many people at this event. The team spirit from all the students as they chanted for their carnival house or individual in an event was inspiring to see.
Reports will be going out in Week 9 on the 29th of June. We will again this year be continuing the three way interviews with the class teacher, student and their parent or carer. This is a great opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher to examine areas of strength, and areas for growth, in Semester Two. Booking information will be sent out soon for this process and we look forward to seeing you at the interviews.
The Year 5 and Year 6 excursions are approaching quickly. Please ensure you have returned all notes, and final payments are made in time, to confirm your child’s place on these wonderful learning experiences.
Have a safe and enjoyable long weekend.

Cowra Eisteddfod
On Wednesday, 23rd May, students from K-6F, K-6M and 2-6C travelled to Cowra Civic Centre to represent Forbes Public School and compete in the Cowra Eisteddfod.
Students prepared and practiced diligently for a number of weeks leading up to the event. Many different talents were on display. All of the students were exceptional on the day, performing to their highest ability. They really stole the show. The judges also thought so as we took out first place in our category, edging out Forbes High (second place) and Holman Place (third Place) to take home the trophy and $300 prize money.
We can’t give out any details in this report, because they will become spoilers as we are due to perform it at our assembly in week 10.
Everyone is invited to attend.
P & C News
It was a fantastic turnout on Friday for our Athletics Carnival. We had a great day, and between the BBQ & the canteen, we raised close to $1000 which will go towards supporting our school.
A massive thank you has to go out to all the parents and carers who volunteered their time to help with the trackside BBQ, the canteen and with the carnival.
These days can't operate without our wonderful volunteers and we are always grateful for your help.
Our next P & C meeting will be held on Wednesday, 4th July at 7pm in the 4R classroom.
We look forward to seeing you all there.
Visiting Show – Australian Folklore
Our Term 2 visiting show will be held on Wednesday, 4th July.
Australian Folklore is an informative, humorous look at the legends and heroes that make up our Australian identity.
There is didgeridoo playing, sing-a-longs to some Australian classics and even a chance for students to test their sheep shearing skills – not on real sheep of course.
If you would like your child to attend this exciting show, please send $8 to the office in an envelope labelled Australian Folklore, your child’s name and class by Friday 22nd June.
Our school welcomes EFTPOS payments.
Travelling Show Coordinator – Samantha Flack
Life Education Van
The Life Education Van will be visiting our school from 21st June until 27th June. The cost this year is $5 per student and has been included in your pre payment account.
If you would like your child to attend and have not yet paid your pre payments please send $5 to the office in an envelope labelled Life Education Van, your child’s name and class by Friday, 15th June.

Boys’ Soccer
Winter started early this year, just in time for the Boys’ Soccer Team to play their first game of the season.
On a cold, blustery, wet day the FPS Boys Team played against Forbes North Public School in Round 2 of the PSSA Knockout.
From the first whistle the boys looked strong. Hugh Chudleigh controlled the defensive line with excellent assistance from Bailey Peckham. Both cleared balls away from the back with ease and kept the ball moving forward. Keith Withers and Lachlan Kearney-Pallister were able to push the ball forward into our midfield as well as securing the back. When tested, Jonah Little stood up to be counted and made great saves.
Our midfield was dynamic. Ben Crowley and Alex Lemon fed Samuel Motley, Michael Behan and Reece Kollias well all day. Seth Butler was tireless and hard working all game, chasing down the ball and defenders without hesitation.
The bench, Nick Zannes, Kye Kennaugh, Malaki Paahi and Cohen Stavleu were exceptional. When called upon they jumped into action.
The team moved the ball well and created a number of chances. Reece scored 3 goals to give us the win.
We now play the Forbes Small Schools on Friday, 15th June in Forbes at the Botanical Gardens.
GRIP Leadership Conference - Dubbo
The Forbes and District Lions Club have once again supported Forbes Public School's Student Representative Council with a generous donation.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Lions Club has funded all 21 of our SRC members to attend a GRIP Leadership Conference. Grip Leadership provides enthusiastic, skilled and passionate presenters to deliver practical and interactive training conferences for student leaders.
Students elected to the SRC travelled to Dubbo, to participate in a day full of different sessions, designed to provide a better understanding of leadership in a school context, how to implement effective leadership, the characteristics of a good leader, the expectations of responsibility, generating ideas and turning these into action.
The day provided opportunities to interact with other student leaders from the region and equipped them with a number of critical skills and approaches to a dynamic array of challenges student leaders can face. It was inspiring to see students rise to these challenges and embrace learning how to tackle them.
Opportunities like these workshops leave a lasting impact on students which they can refer to, not only during the school year, but later in life as well.
Leadership is a pivotal element of the culture at Forbes Public School, preparing students to be robust future citizens. Well done SRC of 2018 for demonstrating how responsible and respectful our student leaders are at FPS at GRIP 2018.
Respectful, Responsible, Safe
The past fortnight, our students focused on ‘visiting classrooms’. Students practised ways that we visit classrooms with a focus on using manners and walking quietly around the school, ensuring we do not disturb other classes.
The focus for next fortnight is ‘pick up and bus lines’. Teachers and students have now had an explicit lesson on this as a whole school and we have already seen positive changes in the way that we line up for going home.
A friendly reminder that our PBL Activity Day is approaching fast. It is so good to see so many blue cards being handed out for positive behaviour around our school. Students have just two weeks to post all their blue cards to ensure they can participate in the activity of their choice.
We look forward to seeing continued safe, respectful and responsible behaviour being displayed around our school.

Boy’s Basketball
Melbourne United are the NBL Champions. The Golden State Warriors lead the Cleveland Cavillers 2–0 in the NBA Finals. There are more Australian players playing in the NBA then ever before…but more importantly, Forbes Public School has a Boys’ Basketball team.
We travelled to Wellington to play Wellington Public School. The boys trained well, travelled well, arrived with a great attitude and they looked phenomenal.
From the first tip the boys’ effort was excellent. Sonny Bevan was rebounding everything on offence and defence. Hugh Chudleigh and Michael Behan hustled up and down the floor. Jonah Little got himself in
great positions to get shots off and Riley Neilsen did an excellent job running the team as the point guard.
Our second line up really brought some intensity to the floor. Justin Kruger moved into Power Forward, Ben Crowley into Point Guard and Reece Kollias into Shooting Guard which really lifted the team. Samuel Motley and Matthew Higgins also made excellent contributions when they came onto the floor.
In the end we came up against a red hot Wellington Team, that were a well drilled fantastic team. Our efforts could not match their class with Wellington running out winners 40 – 12.

Netball Report
On Tuesday, 15th May the FPS PSSA Netball Team travelled to Dubbo and played 5 games. They won one game against Forbes North Public School and the score was 1 to 19. The girls had a fantastic day playing netball. We would like to thank Mrs Boyton and Miss Groat for their time and effort towards the team. By Scarlett Francis and Isla Worland
On Tuesday, 22nd May the Netball Girls travelled to Parkes to compete in the Schools Cup. They played very well in the cold and wet. The Year 5 Girls played 3 games and unfortunately lost all their games. The year 6 team went very well and won 3 out of 4 games and ended up 2nd overall in their age group. Well done to these two teams you have made our school proud.

Primary School Rugby League On Show Congratulations to Forbes Public School rugby league representative Jonah Little on his recent selection in the Western Primary Schools open rugby league squad. Jonah was a stand-out at the Western trials, and his skills and teamwork were duly noted by selectors. Jonah had a terrific opportunity in the lead up to the NSW carnival by attending a 3 day NSW NRL development camp at Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre recently and is looking forward to hitting his straps in a trial match/training run on June 8 in Orange. These should be great opportunities for Jonah to work with highly skilled and experienced NRL development officers and coach Ben Smith of Parkes Public School, to hone his skills and develop a close working relationship with his new team mates, before taking on the best primary school footballers from across NSW in the NSW PSSA Open rugby league state carnival to be held at Mudgee. The NSW carnival runs over 3 days from June 26-28 with the view of selecting a NSW squad that will compete at the Australian Schoolboys championships later in the year. This year’s team comprises players from Bletchington, Calare, Canobolas, Canowindra, Condobolin, Cudgegong Valley, Forbes, Kelso, Lithgow, Mudgee, Narromine, Orange, and Perthville Public Schools along with Molong and Tottenham Central Schools. Mr Smith has his sights set high for this year’s team. “Last year the team had a hard run with several close games, that with a different bounce of the ball, could have gone our way. This year I’m confident that the ball will bounce our way and the close calls will be with us. Having said that our boys did play extremely well and that was acknowledged with several of our players being considered for selection in the NSW team. I have every confidence that this years team can step up and will do a great job during the carnival. Who knows we may have another player stand out and be selected in the State team.” He stated from League Central. “Traditionally the Western teams are considered the poorer country cousins in this competition and don’t often have the size to match it with the bigger, stronger players from metropolitan teams, but this year we have a game plan to emphasise the extraordinary speed, strength and skill of the Western team. We will work on that over the next few weeks in our training sessions. I’ve got great support in my manager, trainer and mentor Mr Faulkner from Bedgerabong- he’ll have the kids revved up and ready come game day. We’re all very excited and can’t wait to get into it. “

Keeping safe around school crossings For your child’s safety, it’s very important to ensure they use the school crossing.
At all crossings you must wait on the footpath, at least one step back from the edge of the road.
If there’s a School Crossing Supervisor, wait until they have stopped the traffic and called you to cross.
If you are driving, you must not proceed until the School Crossing Supervisor’s hand-held sign is no longer displayed, or until the crossing supervisor indicates that you may proceed through the crossing.
Children’s crossings
Children’s crossings are usually part-time crossings that operate before and after school hours. They can also operate at other times when children use the crossing for excursions or during break times. When ‘Children Crossing’ flags are displayed, you must stop at the white line if pedestrians are waiting to cross. Drivers must remain stationary until the crossing is clear of pedestrians.
