March was about your United Irish Cultural Center being truly validated as “The Cen- ter of All Things Irish in the Bay Area”. In partnership with the United Irish Societies, Irish Crossroads, St. Cecelia’s Father’s Club, Comhaltas, Java Beach Café, the Irish Immigration and Pastoral Center and countless other Irish organizations, your UICC served as the place to celebrate. A wonderful Irish Cabaret evening attended by over 300 people (special thanks to Liam Riedy for coordinating the event), a terrific parade experience with our Grand Marshals Margaret and Dan McAuliffe (hats off to Kathleen Manning and the United Irish Societies for a superb Saturday parade), an incredible “after the parade” celebration, a spectacular block party and a senior citizen’s celebratory mass and luncheon made up some of the March event highlights. Music, good fellowship and great food and drink were the order of the day. Irish music, laughter and stories echoed throughout the Center during the month of March. We all felt great joy in shar- ing the incredible pride that we have in our very special Irish heritage. The SF Chronicle featured an article by Ruben Navarette, Jr. on March 17th. In referring to the Irish Americans, Navarette writes, “The 34.1 million Americans who identify themselves as either primarily or partially Irish helped shape this country in the 20th century.” Noting that the main wave of Irish immigra- tion lasted almost 100 years, the writer continues pointing out that Irish Americans, while a part of the American mainstream, have also worked mightily to preserve their identity and heritage. Preservation of our identity and heritage as Irish Americans is what the UICC and its foundation, the Irish Cultural Centre of California (ICCC) are about. As we move into our fortieth year as a “Center for All Things Irish in the Bay Area” your membership dues are assuring that the Center will remain and be sustained for years to come. I’ll bet all do not know that April is national poetry month. Sean Casey, who coordinates the UICC’s wonderful poetry workshop (and dream workshop too) reports that the UICC will be represented (by four readers plus a musician) at the SF Jazz Poetry Festival’s ethnic Irish night on Thursday, April 3rd. Tickets are available. More information can be found elsewhere in the Bulletin. This month we will have many wonderful classes, dinners and activities for you to enjoy. Easter comes late this year but the UICC traditional Easter brunch is an event to calendar right away! In closing, a bit of humor (I can’t resist!): Isn’t it appropriate that the month of tax begins with April Fools’ Day and ends with cries of “May Day”? Book SaleThank you to all of you who supported the library by volunteering at the book sale (Samantha Cai-ro-Toby, Anne Carew, Pat D’Arcy, Ed Dowling, Valerie McGrew, Jack O’Keeffe, Mary O’Sullivan, & Liz Roberts) and/or purchasing books at the Center’s annual block party on March 16. The profit was about $450. If you were not able to attend the book sale but are interested in purchasing books, we are in the process of preparing a list of books valued over $10 still available for sale, which will be posted at the library and online. Or, stop by the library to check our equally lovely but less expensive books on the sale cart.

Spotlight on the Volunteers

Job well done to the United Irish Societies of San Francisco, under the leadership of Diarmuid Philpott, for organizing another wonderful St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Grand Marshal’s Dinner.

Happy Easter to one and all
