It is therefore with an immense sense of pride, that I present our annual school report. This report summarises our many achievements over the 2017 school year and is the culmination of the work of many. The report was uploaded onto the school website towards the end of last term. Please visit our website at http://www.johnpurch-p.schools.nsw.edu.au and go to the Our School section. I am sure you

will be as proud and delighted as we are with the many achievements made throughout 2017.

A Learning Journey in the 1A Classroom

It was a great pleasure to join the 1A Learning Journey at the end of last term. This was a lovely culminating activity whereby many parents were able to join the class to hear about the learning from the children.

When I asked different children what they were learning and why it was important, they very clearly mentioned they were learning how to include labels in their diagrams so that it was clear what steps the animals went through during their lives. The children were also able to describe the life cycle process and how these were similar for 2 different creatures: the mealworm and the butterfly. It was great to hear the

children talking about their learning in such an articulate way, particularly as this was their first learning journey for the year. Well done 1A and Mrs Allen!

Happy Mothers’ Day This Sunday ,families around Australia will celebrate Mothers’ Day. Mothers’ Day gives us an opportunity to thank our mums for their unconditional love and for all the small and big things they do for us every day. Our P & C and their helpers have organised a Mothers’ day gift shop (stall) in the assembly hall this Thursday 10 May as well as a special Mothers’ Day breakfast this Friday 11 May. We hope to see lots of mums here enjoying breakfast with the children.

Please refer to the Mothers’ Day flyer for further information. From the staff at John Purchase we wish all the mums a fabulous day on Sunday.

NAPLAN - The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. Students will undertake the NAPLAN tests from next week. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children. All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. An individual student report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify the areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.naplan.edu.au Mrs Leonie Black Principal

Communicating effectively with your children

It is important to discuss bullying with your children on a regular basis. Regular communication with a person they trust and respect will help them form their own opinions and beliefs about bullying. Your children will also feel more comfortable telling you if they are being bullied. Consider trying some of these ideas to improve the way you talk with your children about tricky issues. Sit shoulder-to-shoulder or walk with your child as you talk

• Talking face-to-face can be quite confrontational, particularly for boys. Sitting or walking side by side will encourage both you and your child to talk freely. Use open-ended questions

• It is easy to ask your child if they had a good day or if they would like toast for breakfast; however these questions only require a yes or no answer. • Try asking questions such as “What did you do today?” or “What would you like for breakfast?” These types of questions encourage discussion between you and your child. Talk with your children about what to do rather than what not to do

• It is common for us to focus on negative behaviour, such as “don’t step in that puddle” or “stop swinging on your chair”. • Try telling your children what you would like them to do rather than what you don’t want them to do. • You can do this by using positive statements such as “please step over the puddle” or “please put the chair legs on the floor”.

The theme for the day is ‘J.P.P.S’. Students are encouraged to dress up in any costume that starts with J, P or S. Every student needs to ensure they still wear closed in shoes on the day. If your child has sport on Thursdays, they need to remember to wear correct footwear and bring clothing (if necessary) to change in to for sport. To support Year 6, each student is asked to bring in a $2 donation.

On behalf of the Year 6 teachers and students, thank you for your support.
