FOR YOUNG SOULS

Preface

Reason for this Book.

Since there are very many inquiringminds and hearts today who cannot graspthe elaborate philosophical details of thegreat essentials of Truth as written for ad-vanced students, this little volume has beenput forth in simple style for young Souls, whether young in years or not, who are asyet unacquainted with some of the deeperphilosophical explanations and great prin-ciples and conditions of life here and here-afterand how to apply them.

It is the sincere hope of the author thatthrough the study and through the appli-cation of the simplified information here-in contained, many will find real happinessas they progress upward on the Path of At-tainment.

CHAPTER I.

Our Origin

Haven't you asked yourself or someoneelse, "Where did I come from? What am Ihere for? How can I make the most of life?"Well, it has been my privilege to find theanswers to these questions and to manymore which have come to my own mind, andI want to pass the answers on to you in assimple a form as possible.God:

You know, of course, that you were cre-ated by God. (Some peoples call Him Allah, some Jehovah, some Ra, and still othersKrishna or Buddhabut He is the one andonly Creator of us all.)Heaven:

One day God allowed you to leave yourreal home which we shall call Heaven tocome to earth to be tested to see if you couldlive a perfect life among the material con-ditions and temptations of earth. Not hav-ing done so, weaknesses of character re-suited. This made it necessary for you tocome to earth time after time in order thatyou might learn to overcome all of theseweaknesses and become as perfect on the

7

earth as you were in your home in Heaven.Free-Will:

God gave you a present of free-will to usefor right or for wrong. When you live lessthan perfectly, you use it for wrong. For in-stance, when you are facing a choice be-tween telling a lie or receiving punishment,if you tell the lie, you are using your free-will for wrong. If you choose to stand uplike a soldier and tell the truth, even thoughyou must be punished for what you did, thenyou use your free-will rightly, and are notguilty of a weakness of character. If youmake a promise, and then think, "Oh, whybother keeping it?" you are weak if yougive in to such a thought. If you see thatyou have made a mistake in giving a prom-ise, then a$k to be released from it.

Someone is asking why he cannot learnhis lessons or learn to overcome his weak-nesses in Heaven instead of having to cometo earth over and over. I will tell you why. There are certain temptations that can beovercome only in a physical body, such asovereating, .eating wrong combinations offoods, not controlling and rightly usingyour creative forces of mind and body, (sex, etc.)

Visits to Earth:Everybody must learn to overcome all of

his weaknesses sooner or later, on one or

8

another of his visits to earth. Therefore, the longer he ëan stay on earth each timehe comes, the more nearly perfect he maybecome, the happier he will be, and thesooner he will be .ready - strong, clean, honorable, unselfish, and poised enough -to live in the most glorious part of Heavenwhere there are no more troubles, andwhere everything is so beautiful and joyousthat nobody on earth can even imagine it!

Now, then, so that you may learn some ofyour lessons, or overcome your teml?tationsand weaknesses of character as quickly aspossible, I am going to help you by givingyou some suggestions gleaned from my ownexperiences and from those of other per-sons I have known.

CHAPTER II.

The House in Which You Live

Since God gave you your body to live inon the earth, you would no more want toallow it to be in a dirty condition than youwould want your home to be dirty. Youwould no more want to abuse this body-house of yours than you would want toabuse, disfigure, or burn your family home.It would be senseless to make your homeuncomfortable and ugly, wouldn't it? Wellthen, how much more senseless it would beto allow your body to become dirty insideor outside and thus make you uncomfort-able and other people too. All right, we areagreed. Now let us see what we can doabout it.Accidents:

Sometimes when we do not use the bestsense or the inner guidance that God gaveusfor we all have a still, small Voice thattells us what to dowe may have what arecalled accidents. It may take some time torepair the injured body if it can be repairedat all. It may be that we must move out ofour body through what is called death. Weare always warned inside (by the still smallVoice of the Christ) of the possibility of an

11

culatin. Those who react to cold water feelwonderfully invigorated after their splashand brisk rub. In certain Sanitaria, thenurses give their bed-patients a good rubwith a rough mitten dipped in ice water, before breakfast. This acts as a good tonic.Inside Cleansing:

Rule 2. Keep your body clean inside. How can you do this? I will tell you. Oneway, but not a good way, is to force yourbowels to empty their loads of waste matterthrough the regular use of strong laxatives.Soon your poor bowels become tired of beingdriven so hard, and when you keep givingthem more and more of such laxatives itis like "whipping a tired horse." Now hereis a better way: Once in a while, say oncea month, it is a good idea to rid your bodyof its accumulated fluid poisons, as well asits solid waste matter, by taking on arisingthree Seidlitz Powders twenty minutesapart. You see, the Seidlitz Powders at-tract the fluid poisons from all over yourbody and carry them off, and you will besurprised how much fluid is thrown offthrough your bowels. Then live on orangesand grapefruit for a couple of days.Enema:

The better way to keep the body cleansedinside is to wash it, and then eat mainlyfruits and vegetables which will naturallycleanse the body, and thus not leave an

[3

overdose of acid and other harmful debris.Drink vegetable juices as well as fruit juicesboth freshly made. This is how you washyour body inside: Put a quart of hot waterin your enema bag or can. Insert the enematube. Kneel down, putting your shoulder(preferably your left) to the floor whileyou allow the water to flow into your bowels. If you have a cramp, shut off the flow ofwater, and let the water out into the toilet. Then begin again as above, and if anothercramp comes, then just pinch the tube toshut off the water until the discomfortpasses, and then allow the rest of the waterto flow in. After you have held all the wateryou can, then massage your bowels upwardtoward your waistline. This helps to keepyour bowels from sagging as so manybowels do on account of the heavy weightthey are made to carry, and also on accountof wrongly fitting clothing. After yourmassage, let the water out into the toilet. It may come out in installments with itsload of waste because there are kinks andfolds in your bowels, and sometimes it is noteasy to push the waste matter along rapidlyon that account. The whole proceedureshould not take over twenty minutes. Walkaround between the times you need to emptyto relieve the strain on the bowels.

Take such an enema once a da1 until youhave two easy movements in addition. to theenema. Then take one at least once a weekso as to keep in fit condition. If you can

14

comfortably rinse your bowels with a cupor two of cold water after the warm enema,it will help to stimulate your bowels.

Do not allow anyone to persuade you thatenemas are habit-forming, because we knowfrom such experience that enemas cureconstipation instead of causing it, especiallywhen you help by eating raw fruits andvegetables.Correct Eating:

Rule 3. Now that you are clean insideand out, let us learn how to build perfectbodies through proper eating (not starva-tion or dieting at all).

(a) Chew your food so that it will be-come creamy and you can almost drink it.Did you know that the best taste from foodcomes when it is in liquid form afterthoroughly chewing it? Try it and see.And here is a great discovery made by avery wise Physician: "Hunger and thirstare satisfied in the mouth, not in the stom-ach."'Mastication:

All right, since you are the boss, youaren't going to allow your tongue, yourteeth, and your jaws to be lazy while yourstomach has to work overtime trying tomake up for their laziness, or rather, your

'Dr. F. Homer Curtiss in Four-fold Health. Dr. Curtissnow has available an excellent tonic-laxative and a bowelantiseptic also.

15

allowing them not to do the work theyotherwise should do. Then too, there iscertain work that the stomach just cannotdo, no matter how hard it tries, and that isthe work the teeth, tongue, and saliva mustdo, if you are to feel right. Let me showyou more clearly what I mean: Breads, porridge, and other foods containing con-centrated starches must be mixed with sali-va in the mouth before they can be digested.Hence much chewing (masticating) mustbe done before such foods are fit to be swal-lowed and turned over to the stomach, if youwant to avoid trouble. It is as unwise toswallow starchy food that is not thoroughlymasticated as it is to put water or gravelin your automobile instead of gasoline. Itjust will not work smoothly.

Starting the Day:(b) Start the morning by thanking God

for the night's rest and asking Him to guideyou through the day. Then, as soon as youget out of bed, wash your mouth with saltywater and then immediately drink a fullglass of orange juice or grape-fruit juiceor the juice of half a lemon in a glass ofwater (either hot or cold). This will helpto alkalize your body and cleanse the canalthat leads from your mouth through yourstomach and through your bowels, and thusprepare the way for your breakfast. (Somepeople do not want anything else for break-fast.) Well, after you drink, take your bath

16

and one kind of food will just have to beknocked out and die, lying there fermentingand giving out a bad odor just as dead thingsdo. (This makes a bad breath.) Now youwant to know which foods are friendly toone another and which ones are enemies. All right, I will tell you, and if you learnthis, you will learn one of the greatestsecrets of health and strength. You willrecall that I told you to drink your juice anhour before breakfast when cereals andtoasts might come along? That was be-cause the acid of the fruit dislikes the starchof the cereal or bread. The fruit also dis-likes sugar (excepting honey or maplesugar, which are iatural sweets.) Thestarch in the bread or cereal likes sugar ofall kinds but it is far better to use naturalsweets, for they are neutral and do not de-cay your teeth as the refined sugars do.

I said I would tell you why you should nottake milk with a starchy food such as breador cereal; and this is why: Milk is a proteinand proteins dislike starches. Now, don'tyou see why? When the starches in yourstomach are calling forth their own digest-ive juice, they will fight when a proteinenters the stomach and calls out an acidjuice which prevents the digestion of thestarches.Summary:

Now, let me sum up the food-combinationquestion, using baseball language: On one

18

side are the concentrated starches (Bread,Cake, Pie, Cookies, Macaroni, Spaghetti,Rice, Potatoes, Beans, Cereals, Dried Peas,Peanuts, Popcorn, Pumpkin, Sago, Squash,Tapioca, Bannanas and Artichokes.) Onthe same side are the sweets (Candy, IceCream, Jellies, Jam, Preserves, Sugar andMolasses.) On the other side are the pro-teins (Cheese, Eggwhites, Fish, Fowl, Meat,Milk, Nuts (excepting Almonds and Cash-ews which are friendly to all). On the sameside as proteins are also the fruits (Apples,Oranges, Grapefruit, Cherries, Lemons, etc.but we cut out Cranberries and Rhubarbaltogether because they are too acid foranybody, and nobody would eat them with-out sugar, and they fight sugar to death.)

You ask me, "What about all the vege-tables and fats?" Well, I am glad to saythese two classes (all the vegetables except-ing dried beans and dried peas and potatoesand the others mentioned under starches)as well as butter, cream, oil, and other fats, are friendly with all other foods, and amongthemselves. Since we want to make thisso easy for you that you can decide at oncewhether or not a meal or a combination iscorrect, at the end of this chapter is a chartof foods all listed in a form that you can getinto your mind quickly. Study this care-fully because I am going to test you prettysoon to see how quickly you can answer mecorrectly. See if I can catch you. Thenwhen yoz know, try catching your parents

19

or friends who are interested in becominhealthy, strong and youthful. Before I asyou these questions, let me suggest that youlearn the Classes of foods, puttmg one classon each of the fingers of one hand, like this:Let the thumb represent the starches be-cause it is stout and starches make peoplestout. The pointer or first finger is thesugars. The middle finger is the vegetablesand the fats. The ring-finger is the protein. The little finger is the fruit or acid finger. Now notice that your two finger "S's" aretogether because they are friendly. Thennotice that your tall finger is named fats andvegetables (Fat-Vegetable) and stands inthe middle because he is friendly to all (a"go-between"). Then Proteins and Acidsare together because they are friendly to-ward one another. We are keeping theStarches and the Sugars away from theAcids and the Proteins because they areenemies. We placed the big Fat-Vegetableas a Policeman between them so as to keepthem apart.Questions:

Now see if I can catch-you! Is a meatsandwich all right for health? If not, whynot? Is apple pie all right? If not why not? After eating meat at a meal, should youeat ice cream and cake for dessert? If not,why not? Is it all right to have fruit andbread at the same meal? If not, why not?Are steak and French-fried potatoes com-

20

patible? Do spaghetti and tomatoes gotogether all right? If not, why not? Arepreserved fruits all right to eat? If not,why not? What kind of sandwiches arecorrect? Make an ideal menu for break-fast, luncheon and for dinner. Will youwrite me your answers? I will take timeto correct and mark them.Food Proportions:

Always see that your foods for theday are chosen this way:. 80% from thefruits and vegetables, and 20% from theother lists. You see most sickness comesfrom eating too many starches, sweets, fats, and proteins, for these cause acidity. Then too, as we said before, it is the fruitsand vegetables that tend to keep yourbowels open and free from constipation.

Excitement or Anger:Never eat when you are excited or

nervous or angry, because at such timesyour saliva glands and your stomachglands are inactive, and as a result, yourfood just lies in your stomach and ferments.Your blood, not knowing any better, fkesup the products of fermented matter anddistributes them all around your body. Nowonder you have headaches, and feel sickat your stomach. If you feel you must havesomething, then just take a glass of fruitjuice, adding, if you wish, a glass of milk.Remember that fruit (especially orange

21

juice) should be taken with milk so as tocounteract the tendency of the milk toform mucous in your body. An adult doesnot need milk as his bones are formed.Body-Temples:

You have been receiving in these rulessome exact ways of keeping yourself fit,and for making your body a clean "temple"for God to dwell in. You know the Biblesays, "Know ye not that ye are the templeof the living God?" Knowing this, youwould no more want to have your body-temple unclean than you would want com-pany to visit your home when it was uncleanand in a disorderly conditionHabit:

I heard one person say, "Oh, it is too muchtrouble to live that way." What would youanswer? My answer is that it is easier tolive the right way than the wrong way. Itis cheaper too because you save on doctorbills when you live right. When you formthe habit of living clean and rig/it, you willnever want to live any other way, becauseyou vill be so full of life and joy that youwould shudder at the thought of beingdirty inside as you used to be.Doubters:

You may say, "I can eat anything. Iwouldn't know I had a stomach. I feel won-derful." That may well be. However, if

99

you htd heard the cries of regret we haveheard from people who used to talk thatway, you would be very glad when we tellyou that every time you eat wrongly, youare accumulating more and more waste-matter in the cells of your body until someday when Nature cannot stand any more, you will suddenly collapse and either passon, or perhaps have some incurable disease. You who are wise have taken warning.

Now that you have been taught how todeal with your body, if through practice, you have a keen mind and happy thoughts, you are ready to proceed to the next Chap-ter. If any of you have not practiced whathas been given you in this Chapter, yourbrains may be so laden with waste matterthat you could not clearly understand justwhat we are going to give you. Therefore,do not try the next work until you havemastered your body lessons.

NOTE :All the above instructions are given you withthe approval of Dr. F. Homer Curtiss. Those who areunder our direct care receive full and accurate diagnosisand also personal diet2tic, radionic, medical, and psycho-analytical treatment.

CHAPTER III.

ToleranceChange Noted

Having seen a large number of personswho changed from cross, irritable, un-healthy looking individuals into cheerful, peaceful, healthy, and good looking, I amhoping that all of you who have studied andlearned the lessons in Chapter 1 of thisbook, have showed your good sense by ap-plying them to your own lives, deciding tolive the healthy way always. Taking it forgranted that you have, I am ready now togive you some even harder lessons, know-ing you are now eager and alert becauseyour bodies and brains are clean andhealthy. By the way, sometimes it takesfrom two to five years to purify completelysome bodies because they have been cloggedso long with waste matter.Tolerance:

The first lesson you faithful and wise onesare given is that of TOLERANCE. Whatis tolerance? Just this: Giving others thesame right to their ideas and opinions asyou claim for yourself, and being pleasantabout it. You know that all people cannot

27

think alike. In fact, no two think exactlyalike even if they are brought up exactlyalike, because no two have had exactly thesame experiences in past lives, to say noth-ing of this life. If we think somebody else isweaker than we, let us not condemn him.We must be careful lest we become too cock-sure of ourselves, and the one we condemngets ahead of us on the road of progress. No part of the road is easy, but nothing isworth gaining that is not worth strivingfor.

Backsilders:As long as we are thinking unkind things

about other people, we are not climbing, butsUding backward. The very persons aboutwhom we are thinking intolerant thoughts, and about whom perhaps we are saying un-kind things may be farther along the Pathof Attainment (Progress) than we arc. Wemust remember that there may be just asmany things to criticize about us as thereare about the other person. There is somegood in. everybody, so let us look for thatrather than for mistakes. Who doesn'tmake mistakes?

Would you like to hear about the "KUH"Club? I will let you in on the secret of thisClub, for I know you will want to join it.Whenever any one of the members says orbegins to say anything unkind about any-

body, or acts selfishly or wants to do some-thing or say something dishonest, one ormore of the members of the Club will callout, "KUH !" What do you suppose theymean? Here it is: K stands for kind. Ustands for unselfish, and H stands forhonest. So when they ask, "KUH" theymean,IsitKIND? UNSELFISH?HONEST? You see this is a splendid wayto stop lots of gossip and hurts, as well aslots of Karma.Karma:

What do I mean by Karma? Just whatSt. Paul meant when he said, "Whatsoevera man soweth, that shall he also reap." Inother words, what we send out in thought, word or deed, will come back to us in kmd.Karma is the Law of Cause and Effect. Nowyou may form a club of your own, and seewhat fun you will have catching one an-other, and at the same time how much goodyou can do in helping one another to growkind, unselfish, honest, and so, Christ-like.Foreigners:

Are you tolerant with foreigners? Afterall what are foreigners? Just people wholive or lived where we do not live. Is thatwrong? Suppose I said I was born in Colo-rado, and you were not, so you were not asgood as I. Would that make sense? Wehave so much to be ashamed of in ourselvesthat we have no right to criticize others.

29

Let us imagine a group of babies, one Brit-ish, one Japanese, one German, one French, one Swedish, one Mexican, one African, oneSpaniard, etc. Supposing they were allbrought up alike in feeding, worshipingGod, and in every other way. If the out-side world were kept from them, do yousuppose they would know anything aboutrivalries, antagonism, race hatred, andwars? Their individualities would comeout, for even people of one family showtheir individual characters, but they shouldlive together in peace and friendship andnot expect others to believe exactly whatthey do. Get to work on yourself now. Youwill have much to do before proceedingfurther.

30

CHAPTER IV

Criticism

How are you enjoying being tolerant? Iam sure you have said many a "KUH" andhave had it shouted at you too, and you areall the better for it.Face Within:

Here is another lesson that seems to meto be even harder than the one on Tolerance. When somebody says something unkindabout YOU, what do you do about it? Doyou go off and sulk? Do you become angryand want to fight back with ugly words? If you do, you are not only wasting time andenergy but you are losing the battle. Whatthen should you do? First of all, look with-in yourself to see if there is not somethingthat attracts to yoi this show of seemingunkindness. You know "like attracts like,"and so perhaps you merited this unkind re-mark in some way. In many cases, you willfind the cause of the trouble within yourself, and when you do, then face yourself square-ly and say, "All right, here is my chance toimprove. I am thankful for the remark thatbrought this fault of mine to my attention."

31

God. Here is a splendid thing to do, and onethat will work too, if you are in earnest:What to Do:

Every morning and every time you feelnaughty thoughts coming in, pray eithersilently or aloud, "0, Christ, please thinkthrough me; feel through me; speakthrough me; and act through me. Thankyou. Amen." When your mind is filled withthis prayer then none of the evil thoughtscan find lodgment in your mind or heart.Thoughts:

You see even your thoughts can. be feltby others, so you will need to keep them asclean and kind as your tongue. Yes,thoughts rush out of your mind to the placeyou send them, and they bring back to youthe same kind of force that you sent out,so watch out!Your Face:

Did you know that your face shows thekind of thoughts you think? Yes, justlook in the mirror and see if it is reflectingkind and loving thoughts. Do this each dayand watch the improvement. Ask God orthe Christ (who is God's Ray in you, some-times called your Higher Self) to keepyour thoughts clean. That is what is meantin the beautiful prayer: "Create in me aclean heart, 0 Lord, and renew a rightspirit within me." Ask God to wash your

33

heart and mind clean and to help you toovercome all the sins of past incarnationswhich have left their mark on your face ando;i your body too. Even if a face is notbeautiful in features it may become radiant-ly lovely and strong through right think-ing and prayer.

Our Teacher often says: "It is not personsor things or circumstances that hurt us, butour rcactio, to them." In other words, it iour reactions and our thoughts about thingsand circumstances as well as our feelingsabout them that do us good or harm. I liketo put it this way:

'Tisn't things that make you happyNor lack of things that makes you blue;

It's thoughts that bring you joy or sorrow,So it's strictly up to you.

The Blues:One of our students wrote: "Recently I

awakened with a great sense of depressionor blues. If I had given in to them and gonedownstairs among the family and amongother people, I should have made them allfeel my gloom. I remembered what you hadtaught me, so I went right to the bathroomand took an enema to get rid of my bodypoisons that I knew had something to dowith my blues. Then I prayer to God toflood me with His love and cheer, and fin-ished by asking that He would think andfeel and act through me. In a half hour I

34

went downstairs cheerful and happy overthe victory I had won with God's help, andI noticed that others smiled because of mysmiles." One of life's greatest thrills is thefeeling of victory over one's own temperor blues or other weakness. Try it and seefor yourself, and keep trying until you win.

CHAPTER V

Two Selves

By this time, if you have been faithfullypracticing what you have learned in theprevious chapters, you should be feelingpretty fine. No doubt you have had somepretty hard tussles with yourself becauseyou have two personalities; that is to say,you have a lower or animal self and also aHigher or Spiritual Self. The lower selfis selfish, hot-tempered, and everything thatis not admirable. The Higher Self is kind, loving, tolerant, poised, obedient, and alto-gether like the Christ. Now your job is toget that lower or smaller self to give in tothe fine Higher Self. Let us pretend thatyour lower self is your dog. If you have adog, do you allow him to run all over thehouse, tearing things to pieces and havinghis own way generally? I don't think youdo. What do you say to him when you wanthim to obey you? "Go lie down 1" Don'tyou? Well, then when this naughty, ani-mal self tries to run you and your houseand wants to be ugly and cross and say meanthings, just try telling him to "Go lie down !"It is not easy to do, but this method mayhelp some of you more sometimes than theprayer way. Then when this has become

37

easy, try the prayer way, asking yourChrist, or Higher Self, to express throughyou.

Discontent:Well, you are wondering if I am going

to give you something more to conquer inthis chapter. Yes, I believe you are nowstrong enough to take something else. Somany persons have come to us with theirspirit of discontent lately that I am going totell you what causes it and how to overcomeit.

Sometimes discontent (being dissatisfied)comes as a result of feeling sorry for your-self, or what we call self-pity. There is noth-ing so depressing and nothing that willmake other people want to stay away fromyou more than self-pity. It shows that youhave a selfish disposition and a weakness, for if you were strong you would tell thatfeeling of self-pity to "Go lie down !" Afteryou have said this and meant it, you musthave something to take the place of theselfish thoughts, so immediately turn to theChrist within your heart and pray: "DearChrist, please tell me what to think and sayand do, now, so that no other bad thoughtscan come into my mind."

You will sooner or later be shown someloving things to do. Perhaps it may be tosweep the sidewalk in front of the house, orclean the basement, or straighten your room

38

or your clothes, or weed the lawn, or dry thedishes, or take some flowers to a sick person,or read something helpful to a sick or blindperson, or write a kind, helpful letter tosomebody who would be made happy by it.Or you might tell somebody about this littlebook and how you have been helped by it,or you can ask your mother or your fatheror somebody else if there is not somethingyou may do to help him or her. A waywill always be open for you if you reallywant to be helpful. If you don't want to behelpful, then you will know that it is yoursmaller, animal self that is ruling you, andyou know what to do then, so that you maybe happy and be growing in character.Happiest Moments:

Isn't it fun to play the game of life andwin it? The happiest moments of your lifeare those when you (your Higher Self) havebeen the winner over the lower self, andwhen you are making other people happy.Try it and see. Have you practiced andmastered all the foregoing Lessons?

39

CHAPTER VI

Personal Survival

My friend, for by this time we are friends, having gone through many experiences ofthe same kind, and having conquered ourlower, animal personalities to a marked de-gree in many mstances. To be sure, we allfail at times, but only a worm does not getup, so let us straighten our shoulders, smileand try again.

While you are practicing the several les-Sons already given you, we shall give yousome interesting information about the lifeafter what we call death. Let me tell youfirst of all, that there is no death for thespirit, for we never die but just leave thisphysical body, to live in another, finer bodythat only a few people are able to see. Thosewho can see our finer bodies have theirinner or psychic eyes is developed naturally, from birth as a ruleso they can seemany things that are going on in the nextrealm above this one which we call earth.Astral:

Let us imagine this earth as made up oflayers and many more layers outside theearth that we cannot see. We will call

41

these layers realms. The first realm, Whichis made up of seven regions, is called theastral realm. This astral realm is the firstone we go to when we leave our physicalbodies. Our Teacher puts it this way: "Wego one flight up with our overcoats off."Then he points out that when a person takeshis overcoat off, he is still the same person.Just so when he takes off his physical body'lie is still the same persoÌ; having the samedisposition, the same faults, and even looksthe same only a little better. If he has beencross and mean on this earth, he is the samein the astral realm; and if a person likesto be kind and make others happy here onearth, he will want to do the same in theastral realm, helping those either on theearth or in the astral realm. Oftentimespeople do not realize for a while that theyhave left their physical bodies or "died" assome people call it, and they do not under-stand why their families and their friendsdo not speak to them. Then after this goeson for a time, they begin to wonder if theyhave left their earth bodies, and they seethat they have a finer body. So you see ourbodies are just our houses which shouldbecome "the temples of the living God,"whether we live on the earth or in someother realm.Fortune Telling:

Now here is something for you to remem-ber in case someone wants to give you a

42

"reading" or tell your fortune. (We callthose who can see and hear our loved onesand others in the astral realm mediums orpsychics.) Since you know now that thosewho pass on into the astral realm, afterleaving their bodies, are just the same per-sons they were while in their bodies, youshould not believe that everything they arereported by the medium as saying is anymore right and wise than you would believeit to be if they were living in their bodieson earth. It is interesting and kind some-times to allow our loved ones to give us amessage through some medium who is re-liable, but we must be very careful not tofollow their advice UnleSs we feel that it isaccording to wisdom of our own HirherSelf or the Christ within us. (Or own con-science.) With rare exceptions, mediumsreach people only on the astral plane, al-though there are far higher realms.

Higher Realms:The next realm to the several astral re-

gions is called the mental realm, and this iswhere those with brilliant minds and goodhearts dwell. Great inventions are devel-oped there, and sometimes the great invent-ors there succeed in getting their wonder-ful ideas through to inventors on the earthby impressing these ideas on their minds.

Beyond the mental realms are the gloriousspiritual realms commonly called Heaven,

43

but these are glorious beyond even ourpower of imagination. However, when youleave your physical body, you will go whereyou deserve to go, according to the life youhave lived oi the earth.

This is all of this subject for this time,' forI would not wish to confuse you. I just feelthat you should know something of theother side of life so that you will have n'ofear of going there when your visit on earthis over. You see, ignorance is no excuse forcondemning or for making mistakes. There-fore, you should want to know all sides oflife so as not to make mistakes unneces-sarily.

CHAPTER VII

Forgiveness

By this time, some of you wish to asksome questions, so I have decided to inviteyou to write to me so that I may help youwith your problems. You may send mewhat offerings you wish, to help cover thepostage and paper and time. Jesus said:"Bear ye one another's burdens and so ful-fill the Law of Christ." All right, let us helpbear one another's burdens. My address isin the front of this book.

Today I will tell you about someone withwhom I was talking this .week. She told mehow dreadfully someone had hurt her feel-ings, and how she resented it and grievedabout it for months. Then she added: "NowI am all over it and I don't feel hurt anymoreBUT I could no more go to her housethan anything!" What is wrong? Yousee she had overcome the feeling of resent-ment and hurt, and for that we give hercredit, but she had not forgotten the hurt, and so really way down deep she was stillholding a bit of the old resentment, whichwas keeping her from full forgiveness and

45

had been accused of deceit, and that now shewould never have anything to do with heragain! Do you think Mrs. B. did the rightthing? I feel sure that you would act quitedifferently. Let me guess what you woulddo. 1st, you would consider that news-papers very often misinterpret the truthsince they seek sensationalism (which willsell their papers) no matter whom it mayhurt. 2nd, if Mrs. X had done wrong, youwould try to help her by praying for her,or if you knew her, you would try to helpher see the wrong and love her into wantingto do right. Always reach down to helpsomebody up by showing her the way. Butthat does not mean to get down and dowhat she does in order to show her that .youunderstand. Always give the other personthe benefit of the doubt. Forgive and forgetalways. Confess your own sins and setabout making amends as quickly as pos-sible.

47

CHAPTER VIII

Reincarnation

In Chapter III reference was made to"past incarnations." Therefore, I believeit is right that I should give you a littlemore information on that subject also. Letme do it this way: You have noticed that inthe fall of the year, leaves fall from thetrees, leaving bare branches looking asthough they were dead. However, they arenot really dead, but during the fall andwinter seasons the trees are busy preparingfor another bursting forth or rebirth into anew garb or incarnation the next spring.Rebirth:

Next Spring the tree is the same old tree, but it has a new "dress." Just so with us,for when we put off our body "overcoats" towhich we referred in Chapter V we are stillthe same persons, and like the trees, we pre-pare to come forth in the new outer gar-ment or body when the right season comes. You know too that the trees have the samegeneral appearance as they had in their lastincarnation, and so have we. Yes, actualphotographs show such distinct similarity inappearance between persons in their former

49

bodies and in their present bodies that onecan recognize the personality immediately. The only value in knowing who we were be-fore is in our learning not to continue thesame faults that we had before. However,we know our own weaknesses usually andour business is to conquer them, and so ac-complish that for which we came to earththis time.Jesus' Belief:

The great Master Jesus believed in rein-carnation, for He said in Matthew xi, 14,speaking of John the Baptist: "This is Eli-as, etc." How could John the Baptist beElias unless Elias had reincarnated as Johnthe Baptist? He also asked: "Whom do mensay that I, the Son of Man am?" and Hisdisciples answered, "Some say that thouart John the Baptist; some say Elias; andothers Jeremias, or one of the prophets."Then again in Matthew we see, "For this ishe (John) that was spoken of by the pro-phet Elias saying, 'The voice of one cryingin the wilderness, Prepare ye the way ofthe Lord! . . . And the same John had hisraiment of camel's hair and a leatherngirdle about his loins; and his meat (food)was locusts and wild honey." In 2 Kings1:7-8 we see that Elijah (Elias) was a"hairy man and girt with a girdle of leatherabout his loins" just like John. There areother passages in the Scriptures bringingout this fact of reincarnation, but you of

50

reasonable minds do not need any morequotations.Inequalities

Therefore, let us go on to explain thatthe only way we can reconcile the manyinequalities (great differences in stationsin life) with the fact of a loving God ofwisdom and justice, is through reincarna-tion as follows: A poor man or woman orchild who is struggling to find enough toeat and wear, really chose to come into thislife in such conditions so as to learn cer-tain lessons which could not be learned inany other way. He or she may have beenwealthy in a former life, but perhaps selfishalso, and with no sympathy for the poorpeople, so hard conditions in this life willteach him or her to be kind and humble.

Then what about those who are wealthyin this incarnation? They also have prob-ably chosen this path of wealth that theymay learn certain lessons which may beharder to learn than those of the poor. Yourecall that the Bible says that it is moredifficult for a rich man to enter the King-dom of Heaven than it is for a camel (orrope) to go through the eye of a needle. Why is this? He is so busy spending andtaking care of his wealth that he forgetto pray oftentimes, and forgets to use hiswealth to give many others a chance tomake good. For instance, if some wealthy

51

solved in a physical body; envy of beautifulclothes or of a car or of a beautiful home,or other possessions, must be overcome ina physical body, where such things are used. There are beautiful homes in the astralwhich may be earned, but we will not go intothat just now.Recognition:

Sometimes you feel you know someoneas soon as you meet him or her. Why?Because you have known each other in aformer incarnation. You will be attractedto those whom you have hated as well asto those whom you have loved. Rememberthat law.

53

CHAPTER IX

Why We Suffer

You probably ask, as many others do,why innocent people have to suffer, such asthe innocent in warring countries. I willanswer in as simple a way as possible. Eachof us chooses to be born in the country inwhich we appear. Therefore, we must begood sports and take the fate or karma ofthat country and do all we can to help. Wedo not know the personal lives of all thosewhom we call innocents, neither do we knowhow much of such suffering they need toteach them the lessons they did not learnthrough their comparatively easy lives be-fore the war. However, in any case, theymust share in the life of their chosen coun-try; and they do not complain when theyunderstand the above reason.

You and I suffer because we have brokensome Law of God, either in this incarnationor in a past incarnation. God never pun-ishes us, but we punish ourselves by work-ing against the Law. You see, when we do.not obey the Law the easy way, and reapthe joys of living in harmony with it as weshould, then we must suffer in order to

55

learn our lessons. In other words, we reapwhat we have sown, no matter how smallthe wrong may seem at the time. There-fore, when things seem to go wrong, try tolook back into your life to find out why.You will probably remember some unkind-ness, no matter how small, you did to some-one. If the suffering is physical, you knowfrom a former lesson, that you have notobeyed the Laws of Health.

So, dear one, let us be fair and so blameourselves before we blame anyone else, andthen set about making things right, first, within our own thoughts and then towardthe others whom we may have injured.

56

CHAPTER X

Giving

Sometimes you wonder whether it is rightto give to the poor or to those who beg.Perhaps I can help you. First of all, letme tell you a great Law: "Give and it shallbe given unto you," and as ye give so shallyou receive. This Law is often turnedaround in the minds of those who ask forsomething without wishing to give in re-turn. This means, in order to be able reallyto receive and property use what is givento you, you must give something for it. Thismay be money or service, but preferablyby some sacrifice. It has been my experi-ence that the individuals to whom I gavethe most without receiving anything in re-turn, turned out to be my enemies. Why?My giving created in them a sense of obli-gation which made them feel uncomfort-able. The natural reaction was to turnagainst the one who caused their discom-fort. Do you see the psychology of it?

Why is giving necessary to receiving?Because to give, you must open your handand your heart. Then when they are open, they are ready to receive. A closed fist

57

cannot receive anything, neither can aclosed heart and mind. All right then, letus, when we want to give, try to help othersto help themselves, or help them to carryon. a. good work for others. When someonecomes to the door to ask for something toeat or for money, give him a job no matterhow small, so he can keep his self-respect,and obey the Law of Giving.

Do not forget this point either, that evenwhen you teach someone how to care forhis health, if you do not require him to givesomething or some service for that teach-ing, he will feel that it is cheap and so willnot do as you say, and will go on suffering. The higher the price, the greater the respectand appreciation, and so the greater wishto profit by it.

If the above sounds mercenary, pleaseconsider that you are doing the receiver afavor by requiring a return. Let me repeatwhy: 1st, you help him to keep his self-respect. 2nd, you make it possible for himto profit by what you do for him or givehim. People follow their money or theirsacrifices. Try it on yourself and see thetruth of this.

58

CHAPTER XI

Love

No book of spiritual advice would be com-plete without a few words about the great-est power in the world, love. Nobody candefine love excepting to say, "God is Love."Nobody can define God, for a finite (lim-ited) mind cannot grasp an infinite God.We can, however, give some of the char-acteristics of love. Suppose we consult ourfriend Paul of the New Testament. Therehe says, "Love suffereth long and is kind;love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself,is not puffed up; doth not behave itself un-seemly; seeketh not its own, is not pro-voked, taketh not account of evil; rejoicethnot in unrighteousness but rejoiceth withthe truth; beareth all things, believeth allthings, hopeth all things, endureth allthings. Love never faileth," etc. One istempted to think that there is not muchlove in the world if these beautiful charac-teristics are necessary to love. However, Iam sure that you can think of someone whomanifests such characteristics, one who ispatient and kind; one who has no envy orboastfulness; does not try to get thingsfor himself or herself; does not make scenes

59

if someone else has her way; someone whodoes not "fly off the handle" (become angryeasily); someone who does not gossip, anddoes not look for evil in others; someonewho loves truth and right, endures troublepatiently, believes the best of others; isalways cheerful and hopeful; someone whois faithful and can always be relied upon.

There are a few such people, and we wantto swell that number, don t we? Supposewe stop right here and test ourselvesagainst all of the above characteristics oflove and see where we fall short. Then letus go to work in earnest to cultivate thosecharacteristics in which we are lacking. As we do, we shall be happier and makemore rapid progress on the Path. Remem-ber that if Christ thinks, feels, speaks andacts through us, then we shall have alt thecharacteristics of Love.

60

CHAPTER XII

Thanksgiving

Are you grateful for anything? If not, your poor heart and mind are dried andclosed. In another Chapter we showed howgiving makes our hearts, minds and handsopen so they can receive. So it is with giv-ing thanks that are sincere. You ask howyou can be thankful if you just aren'tbecause you want so many things you donot seem to be able to get. Well, I wouldsuggest this: 1st, make a list of all the thingsyou can think of that you have not made orearned yourself. 2nd, add all the kindnessesother people have done for you. 3rd, thinkof the sunshine, the rain, the air youbreathe, the water you drink, the food youget, the clothes you wear, your ability tothink, to see, to read, to taste, to smell, etc.,etc. Send me the list of the number ofthings you have found for which to begrateful, and we shall see who can think ofthe most.

While you are really thankful you can-not be in need. Your attitude is cheerful, and cheerfulness attracts. Your heart is

61

giving, and that means getting. You recallour Law, As ye give so shall ye receive.

Now, in closing, let me remind you of justa few important things: 1st, although wemay be healed through prayer, we will besick again if we do not obey God's Laws ofHealth (See Chapter II) because we will besetting up the very causes which made ussick the other time.

2nd, remember that before you can hopeto master other people and conditions inlife, you will have to learn to master your-selfyour animal self, which causes all thetrouble.

3rd, the cause of all suffering is the break-ing of some Law of God, whether it be phy-sical, mental or spiritual. Look within forthe reason.

4th, when things seem dark, rememberthat the Light is ready to break through assoon as you find within yourself what iswrong with your thinking.

5th, remember that you cannot overcomeas long as your animal self rules you, soturn always to the Christ and ask Him forhelp to be strong, honest, clean, just, kind, thoughtful and radiantly loving.

6th, it is not what you know, but whatyou practice that helps you to make prog-ress.

62

Now let us together say this sincerely:We do thank Thee, dear God, for the privi-lege of learning through these pages thetrue way to happiness and the true way toprogress on the Path of Attainment. Helpus, please, to be faithful to each part of thisteaching, for Thy name's sake, Amen.
