Introduction

TheHammondorgan.Ahistoricoverview

TheHammondorgan,and inparticular, theB3model,hashistoricallybeenoneofthemostwidelyusedand recognizable sounds inmodernmusic. It hasplayedanextensive role in gospel, blues, R&B, rock, prog rock, jazz, country and pop fordecades.DevelopedbytheHammondorgancompanyinthe1930’s,itpre-datesthetransistor and creates it’s sound using mechanical rotating “tone-wheels”. Therotationsarepickedupbymagnetictransducersandamplifiedwithtubepoweredpre-ampsandampsproducingsteadypitchesofarelativelypuresinewavevariety.Thesepitchesare mixed togetheratdifferent frequencies,usingacombinationofnine “drawbars” activated by the organist to create variations in the harmonicspectrum,producingendlessvariationsontheorgantone.Earlyon,theHammondorganwaspairedwithaveryuniqueamplifierwithrotatingspeakersmadebytheLesliecompany.ThemostcommonlyusedmodelistheLeslie122.ThiscombinationbecameintegraltotheiconicandidentifiablesoundoftheHammondorganinmostmusicalstyles.BothHammondandLesliearestillinbusinesstodayandeachmakesavarietyofmodels,allwiththesamegoalofproducingthesameiconicsoundfirstintroducedmanydecadesago.

AsignificantproblemwiththeoriginalHammondB3isit’slargesizeandweight.Ataherniainducing350lbs,ittakesaminimumoffourpeopletomoveitupjustevenasmallflightofstairs,makingitachallengeformusicianstotransportandplaceonsmallstages.Astimewentonandelectronicsadvancedmakingpossiblesmallerandlighter devices, many companies took to reproducing this iconic sound in muchmore portable packages, making the Hammond organ perhaps the most copiedinstrument ever. These instruments are referred to as “clone-wheels”. Today thishas been extended to the virtual world, where weightless virtual softwareinstruments on computers are played from MIDI controllers with facilities forsimulating drawbars and other controls. Likewise, rotating speaker emulationshaveevolvedinasimilarway.

Contributing to this trend, I’ve developed a highly authentic virtualHammondB3organ designed to run onUVI Falcon. Based on a combination of sampling andmodeling, it consists of immaculately recorded and processed individual tone-wheels frommyownvintageandwellmaintainedHammondB3,organized intoadetailed and authentic virtual instrument, with a complete set of controls. Thisincludesfulldrawbarcontrol,2nd&3rdharmonicpercussion,andallsixvariationsofvibrato/chorusfoundonarealHammondB3.Falconeffectsaddspringreverbandrotary speaker simulation. Authentic details not included on other virtual B3instrumentsaddconvincingelementsandlifetothesoniccharacter.

Installation and Setup Pleaserefertotheseparatedocumentationforinstallation(ReadMe).ThismanualassumesthatyouhavesomefamiliaritywiththeoperationofUVIFalcon.Ifthatisnot the case, please read the UVI Falcon owners manual first. To retain properoperationandappearance, all files in thispackage should remain in their originaldirectory.1.0 Setup The Song-Haven Virtual B3 organ for the UVI Falcon platform can be fullycontrolled fromtheonscreenpanelcontrols,orbyutilizingsuitableexternalMIDIcontrollers.Tobegin,itisrecommendedtofirstloadtheMulti,“B3Drawbars.uvim”found inside the Multi folder. This is a basic single manual version of the Song-HavenB3,withallcontrolsandeffectsactive.ThemainpanelcontrolsarefoundontheInfotabofFalcon.DefaultMIDICCnumbersareassignedforeachpanelcontrol.OnaHammondB3,drawbarsareusedtocontroltheharmoniccontentofthesound.Thesearerepresentedon theSong-HavenvirtualB3witharowofninedialsonthe main panel. 1.1 Re-assigning MIDI controllers Before changingMIDICCassignmentswitheachof the largenumberofprogramsandmuItis available in this package, consider instead to create a single patch onyour chosenMIDI controller, assigning the default MIDI CC numbers outlined onthese pages. This could save youmuch time and effort andwill also serve to notdisruptoperationfromotherMIDIcontrollers,suchaswiththeincludedTouchOSClayoutoperatedfromaniPad.Itisalsoadvisedthatbeforechanginganythinginthispackage,makeandworkwithcopieswhilekeepingtheoriginalfilesintact.IfyouwishtochangethedefaultMIDICCnumbersformainpanelcontrolstomatchthose from your controller, you can use the MIDI Learn function. The simpleprocedureisasfollows:Inthemainpanel(foundfromtheInfotab),right-clickonanyofthecontrolstobringupthepop-upmenu.SelectMIDILearnandmoveyourchosenMIDI controller. It is now assigned and should operate properly. Caution;Certain controls work incrementally instead of continuously. These includeChorus/Vibrato (3 steps), Drawbars (8 steps) and Rotary Speed (3 steps). Inorder to retain proper functioning of operating in steps, you’ll need to use analternativeMIDILearnmethodfortheseparticularcontrols.Right-clickacontroltobring up the pop-up menu. But instead of selecting MIDI Learn, Select EditModulation. In thebox thatpopsup, right clickon the currentMIDI assignmentdisplayedintheupperleftcorner.Fromthepop-upmenuthatappears,selectMIDILearn. Move your chosenMIDI controller to assign it. Please see [Advanced 8.3,AlternateMIDILearn]formoredetails.YoumayalsochangeMIDICCassignmentsmanually.Right-clickacontrolandselectEdit Modulation. 2.0 File types

2.1 Loading files: TheSong-HavenB3 forUVI Falconmakes use ofPrograms andMultis. Programfiles (.uvip) are loaded into parts. The Program files contain all the controlsnecessaryforsinglemanualorganoperation,butwithouttherotaryspeaker,reverband expression pedal effects. When one of the included Multi files is loaded, therotary speaker, reverb and expression pedal effects are loaded into the MasterEffects section for global use. This hierarchal method is used for the followingreasons:ProgramsloadedintoapartwithoutoneoftheMultispresentcanbeusedwithout the Master Effects (rotating speaker, reverb, overdrive and expressionpedal), inwhichcaseyoucanuseitwith3rdpartyplug-ineffects instead,orpatchinto a real Leslie speaker. Also, Multis can be customized by loading in differentPrograms into a Part,without creating redundant effects.Whenone of theMultis

(.uvim)isloaded,eachseparatePartwillaccesstheMastereffectscontainedintheMulti [see section6.0,MasterEffects].Thismakes it ideal for settingupmore thanonepart tosharethesemastereffects,suchasthethreepartmultisetup,“FullB3organ.uvim”,withdualmanualsandbasspedals,allpatchedintothesamerotatingspeaker, reverb and expression pedal effects, just like you would find on a realHammondorgan.SinceFalconismulti-timbral,youmaywishtoaddotherpartsforsequencing,possiblynotrelatedtotheorgan.IfyouwishtonothavecertainpartsgothroughtheseMastereffects,simplyassignthepartstoadifferentoutputintheMixersection.

2.2 Programs (.uvip) IncludedwiththispackageareanassortmentofprogramsrepresentingvariationsontheHammondB3drawbarorgan.Allprogramsincludethestandardfiveoctavesof organ notes from C1-C6. There are two primary variations for each of theprograms. The first variation is found in the “Programs” folderwith the programnamed “Drawbars+presets.uvip” and it’s lower manual counterpart,“Drawbars+presets_LM.uvip”, eachofwhichaddsanoctaveofkey-switches to theleft of the lowestorgannote (C0-B0) to allow instant selectionofnearly adozenhard-wiredpresets.ThisisjustlikearealHammondB3organ!It’salsoimportantto know that each of these two programs requires 795 megabytes of internalmemory because Falcon needs to reload the same tonewheel samples for eachdrawbarharmonicforeachpresetvariation.Thisissubstantiallymorethananyoftheotherprograms,butallowsforalargepalletofsoundsimmediatelyaccessible..Alltherestoftheincludedprograms(exceptfor“BassPedals.uvip”)allbelongtothesecond variation and are found in thePresets folders. See [section 4.0, Presets].Withthesecondprogramvariation,insteadofkey-switchpresets,theoctavebelowthelowestorgannoteisanoctaveofbasspedals(C0-B0).Alloftheprogramshavealower-manualcounterpartforuseindual-manualMultis.Themaindifferenceisthatthe lower-manual programs (with an LM suffix to the file name) do not havePercussion.ThisisagainlikearealHammondB3.Inorganparlance,“Swell”referstouppermanualand“Great”referstothelowermanual.Finally, there isaspecialprogramfortheauthenticbasspedalsofaHammondB3called“BassPedals.uvip”.See[section5.0,Basspedals]

2.3 Multis (.uvim) the included Multis have combinations of programs for both single manualoperation and also dual-manual operation with bass pedals. Although bothProgramsandMultisareroutedtothemainoutputinstereo,thesignalfromallofthe includedPrograms is inmono, justasona realHammondorgan.This insuresmonocompatibilityinyourmixes.However,alloftheMultisoutputfullstereofromtheMaster effects. This simulates a rotating speakerwithdualmics on theupperrotorpannedleftandright.Anyoftheincludedprogramscanbeloadedintoanyofthe partswithin aMulti. However, to insure proper operation of controls, lowermanual programs (thosewith an LM file name suffix) should be loaded only intoPart two (MIDI channel 2), and uppermanual programs (those having filenameswithout a suffix) should be loaded only into Part one (MIDI channel 1). Theprograms will then connect to the Master effects unless a different output isspecified.

3.0 Operation

3.1 Drawbar control The nine virtual drawbars are represented on themain panel (on the Info tab ofFalcon)asdials.Thesearemainly forvisualconfirmationandMIDIsetup,andarebest operated from an externalMIDI controller. Drawbar control is set such thatyourMIDIcontrollersautomaticallywork inreversedirection,designedtobehavelike thoseon theHammond,whereaswhendrawbarsarepulled towardsyou, thevolumeof thatharmonic increases.Thismayseemtobetheoppositeofwhatyouare used towith faders, inwhich gain is appliedbypushing the fader away fromyou. However, the onscreen rotary controls will always move in a forwarddirection,regardless.IfyouwishtochangethedirectionofyourMIDIcontrol,itisrecommended that this best be accomplished by changing settings on yourMIDIcontroller (Many modern MIDI controllers have features for changing controldirection). Included in this package is a custom layout file called “Song-HavenVirtual B3.touchosc” forMIDI control from an iPad running the app,TouchOSC.This is already optimized to immediately work much like real drawbars. Noconfiguration is necessary! However, if you change MIDI CC and/or channelassignments,thiswillneedtobechangedintheTouchOSCeditorinordertoremainfunctional.See[section7.0,Extras].

Whenusingacomputerpointingdevicetochangeadrawbarsettingonscreen,thelevelswill change continuously, instead of in increments of eight steps like a realHammond B3. For a more Hammond-like response, where the drawbar levelschangeevenlyineightsteps,useanyMIDIcontinuouscontrollerinstead.Whileyourphysicalcontrollerwilllikelyfunctionsmoothly,Falconwillrespondincrementallywith the appropriate number of steps. The volume on the onscreen dials arerepresentedasDblevels,andassuchdonotdisplaystepsevenly.Restassured,yourMIDI controller will change volume in 8 evenly spaced steps like real drawbars.Uponinitialloadingofanyprogramormulti,thesoundandpositionoftheonscreencontrols may not match the positions on your MIDI controller. This is becauseFalcon has noway to know how yourMIDI controller is initially set.Moving thecontrolsonyourMIDIcontrollerwillcausetheonscreencontrolandsoundtojumptoapositionwhichmatchesyourMIDIcontroller.See[section4.0,Presets].For all multis and all programs not in the Presets folder, The default drawbarsettingswillbealldrawbarspulledouttomaximum,foraneutralstartingpoint.Thedynamic rangeof this instrument canbequite large, so this can initially overloadyourspeakers.Itisadvisedtokeepyourvolumelow,untilyou’veadjustedsettingstoyourliking.Newdrawbarconfigurationsofyourchoosingcanbesaved,usingthe“Saveas”functiontosavenewversions.On a real Hammond organ, each of the nine drawbar harmonics are individuallyactivatedwhen a key is pressed, bymaking contactwith a buss-bar. Thesemakecontactatdifferent times,with thehighestharmonicssounding first.This ismadeclearwhenpressing a keywith very slowvelocity.Wehaveduplicated this effectveryaccuratelywithvelocitycontrol.Itmakesasubtlebutsignificantdifferenceinthefeelandresponse,andaddslifetothesound.Anothersmalldetailwehavenotoverlookedisthenaturalclickingsoundonboththestartandthereleaseofanote,whichisuniqueforeachharmoniconeachkey.3.2 Percussion Percussion on the Hammond B3 organ (and some other models) consists ofaccented versions of a harmonic. There are two choices, 2nd harmonic, and 3rdharmonic.Therearefastorslowdecay,normalorsoftvolumeversionsofeach.IntheSong-Haven virtual B3, percussion controls can be found on themain panelfound on the Info tab in Falcon. It’s behavior is very similar to that of a realHammond B3, whereupon playing legato will cause the percussion effect to notretrigger. These controls can also be operated from an external MIDI controllerusing the defaultMIDI CC assignments, or usingMIDI Learn to create your ownassignments.Detailsofthisarefoundin[section1.1,Re-assigningMIDIcontrollers].MIDIcontrollerbuttonsonyourcontrollerdeviceneedtobein“Toggle”mode(not“Momentary”).

PanelControlsforPercussion:Percon/off:Enablesordisablespercussion.Whenpercussionisactivated,the1’drawbarisdisabled,justasonarealHammondB3.Perc3rd/2ndselectswhichharmonicisactivated.Percfast/slow:Selectsthedecaylengthofthepercussion.Percnormal/soft:Selectsbetweentwopossiblevolumelevelsofpercussion.Thebuttonslightforthefirstoption. 3.3 Chorus/Vibrato TheHammondB3organhastwomodulationeffects,ChorusandVibrato.EachareselectedonarealHammondorganusingasixpositionknoblabeledC1,C2andC3representingthreelevelsofChorusandV1,V2,andV3representingthreelevelsofvibrato.All six of these settings are available in theSong-HavenvirtualB3. Forpractical reasons, themethodof selection is somewhatdifferent thana realB3.AbuttontoswitchbetweenChorusandVibratoisfoundonthemainpanelsectionofFalcon(Infotab)asabuttonlabeled“Chorus/Vibrato”.Thebuttonislitforthetopoption,“Chorus”.SettingsforMIDIcontrolcanbefoundin[section1.1,Re-assigningMIDIcontrollers].To the left of the Chorus/Vibrato switch is a virtual knob, “Ch/Vib Amount”withlabels corresponding to “Off”, C1 or V1, C2 or V2, C3 or V3 positions. Highernumbers results in a more pronounced modulation effect. The fullycounterclockwise position turns the effect off. This is different from a realHammond,whichhasanon/offswitchforeachmanual.ButwiththeSong-HavenvirtualB3,ifamulticontainingmorethanonemanualisloaded,eachmanualhasit’s own independent Chorus/Vibrato) controls. If the “Ch/Vib amount” knob isturnedusingacomputerpointingdeviceonscreen(suchasamouseor trackpad),thechangetothesoundwillbecontinuous.Foramoreauthenticresponse(3stagesofChorusand3stagesofVibratocorrespondingtothelabels),useaMIDIcontroller(thedefaultMIDICC isModWheelCC#1),whichwill increases theeffect in threestagesthatmatchtheactualHammondB3,correspondingtoOff,C1,C2,C3orOff,V1,V2,V3,dependingonwhetherChorusorVibratoisselected.

3.4 Other Controls EnhanceThecontrolnamedEnhanceaddsasaturationeffect,meanttoduplicatetheeffectsoftheHammondB3’stubepre-ampandothercomponents.Thiscanhelptheorgancutthroughamix,andsoundpunchy.EachorganmanualandBassPedalprogramhasit’sownindependentEnhancecontrol.ThiseffectalsorespondstoMIDICC.PitchBendThere is a trick players sometimes use on a real HammondB3 to bend the pitchdown.Byturningthepowerbuttonoffwhileplaying,thisgraduallystopsthetone-wheelsfromrotating,causingthepitchtodrop.Ifyouturnthepowerswitchbackonquick enough, the pitchwill quickly go back to normal.However, if the playerwas not quick enough, the organ would require a restart, which would take aminute. So it was a rather riskymove. On the Song-Haven virtual B3, a similareffect can be had simply by using the pitch bend controller on yourMIDI device,withoutriskofshutdown.Muchfancierpitchbending,includingupwardbendsarealsopossible.

4.0 Presets Includedinthispackageisafoldercalled“Presets”.Insidethisfolderaretwofolderslabeled,“Swell”(uppermanual)and“Great”(lowermanual).Eachfoldercontains30programs. The different programs represent different main panel configurations,which include drawbar settings representing a useful variety of popular andesoteric Hammond sounds. The main panel settings can be thought of asconfiguration “snapshots”. They can be freely overridden with onscreen or MIDIcontrol for either liveperformancepurposesor tobe re-saved asnew “snapshot”versions.Theseprogramsare identical ineach folder,except that theprograms inthe “Great” folder have an LM suffix added to the filename, and since they areintendedforlowermanualuse,donothavethePercussionfunction.In the folder, “Programs” there isalsoaspecialprogramcalled“Drawbars+presets.uvip” (and it’s lower manual counterpart,“Drawbars+presets_LM.uvip”), which provides not only full drawbar control, butaddsa fulloctaveofkey-switches forselectinghardwireddrawbarconfigurations.This is just like the realHammondB3organ,whichhasa rowofkey-switchesoneach manual to select preset hardwired drawbar configurations (using wiresscrewedtoterminalsinthebackoftheorgan).Thekey-switchoctaveisinthesamelocationasonarealB3, to the leftof the fiveoctaveorgankeys, fromC0toB0. 5.0 Bass Pedals The program , “B3 Pedals.uvip” provides 2 octaves of bass pedals, as on a realHammondB3.Therearetwodrawbarstocontrolthesound,32’and16’.ThedefaultMIDICCsarethesameasthefirsttwodrawbarsforthe“HammondB3organ.uvip”(MIDICC’s16&17).Inthe3partMultis,thisprogramoccupiesPart3andrespondstoMIDIchannel#3.Thebasspedalprogramalsocontains2variations,assignedaskey-switchesonD3andE3(justabovethetwooctavesofbasspedalsounds).Thedefault setting (D3) is the standard Hammond bass pedal sound. Key-switch E3selectsavariationnotfoundonstockHammonds,whichaddsapercussiveattack,areleaseandmoregirthtothesoundforbetterbasssoundinsomestyles,soundingsimilar to some common modifications that might have been added to a realHammondorgan.AsonarealHammond,Chorus/Vibratocanbeappliedinthesamewayaswiththeotherprograms,butlikearealB3organ,percussionisnotavailable.In the three partmulti, the Bass Pedals program shares the rotating speaker andspringreverbeffects,asonarealB3. If you are using a five octave (61note) controller, you would need to transpose the keyboard down one octave toaccess these notes. In these programs, drawbar control for the bass pedals isachievedusingMIDICC#8(balancecontrol), tosetabalancebetweenthe32’and16’basspedaldrawbars.ItisnotrecommendedtochangetheMIDICC,astheMIDIspecification for balance control means this will only work properly using thedefaultMIDI CC#8. This control increments continuously, not in 8 steps, as in allother drawbar configurations. The alternate bass sound is only available in thededicated“BassPedals.uvip”program,sotherearenokey-switchesforBassPedalsintheotherprograms.

6.0 Master effects

6.1 Rotating Speaker and Spring Reverb effects The included Multi files contain a Master Effects section. Master effects includerotatingspeakersimulation,springreverbandexpressionpedal.Many Hammond models include or have been modified to include a type ofreverberationdeviceknowasa spring reverb (because the sound travels throughcoiledsprings).OntheSong-HavenvirtualB3,anauthenticspringreverbeffectisachieved through convolution. On many Hammond organs, the spring reverb isroutedto it’sownspeaker,suchasnottogetall “swirly” intheLeslie.This isalso

duplicated in ourmodel, with the spring reverb set parallel and not through therotatingspeakereffectforthemostrealisticreverberationeffect.TherotatingspeakereffectisdesignedtoveryaccuratelyemulateaLesliespeaker,whichiscommonlyusedalongwithHammondorgans.(Rotatingspeakersimulationrequires Falcon version 1.3.0 or later).As on a real Leslie speaker, there are twospeeds, “Chorale” (slow) and “Tremolo” (fast). Some models include a “Brake”feature, in which the rotors slow to a stationary position. A toggle switch ormomentarypedalconnectedtoyourMIDIcontrollercanbeusedtoswitchbetweenthetwospeeds(0or127). 6.2 Master Expression Pedal Another function in theMaster Effects section of theMultis is the B3 expressionpedal. ByallocatingacontinuouspedaldeviceonyourMIDIcontrolleraddressingMIDICC#4 (FootController), you can control expressive volume in the samewaythattheexpressionpedalonarealHammondfunctions.AsthisfunctionislocatedintheMastereffectssection,itwillcontrolallPartsconnectedtotheMainoutput.Thismeansthat ifyouhaveloadedoneofthemultis fordualmanualsandbasspedals,your expressionpedalwill effect the volumeof the entire organ, just as on a realHammondorgan.Anotherauthentic feature iswhenthepedal isbackedoffall theway,thevolumedoesnotgoallthewaydowntozero.Thesoundisstillpresent,butsoftly.Forpracticalreasons,whenaMultiisloaded,maximumvolumeisthedefault,regardlessofthepositionofyourMIDIpedalcontroller.Ifyourpedaliscorrectlysetup, moving it will instantly change the volume to the level matching the pedalposition, similar to drawbar and other continuous controls. The purpose of the“Gain”controlintheEffectsRackpanelisforre-assigningafootcontrollerviaMIDICC if necessary. The MIDI CC# can be changed in the same way as other panelcontrols. See [Section1.1,Re-assigningMIDICC controls].Of course, the volumeofeachpartcanbealsosetasusualinthePartsand/orMixersectionofFalcon.Thiscanbeusefulforchangingthebalancebetweenthetwomanualsandbasspedalsinthe multis. MIDI CC#11 (expression) and MIDI CC#7 (volume) are hardwired inFalconforMIDIcontrolofPartvolume.ThesefunctionsareseparatefromtheGlobalExpressionPedal.

7.0 Extras 7.1 Touch OSC layout Insidethe“Extras”folderisafilenamed“Song-HavenVirtualB3.touchosc”.Thisisalayout file for the Apple iPad app, Touch OSC, which can be inexpensivelypurchased ontheAppleAppstore.Loadingthis layoutintoTouchOSCallowsforfull MIDI control of the Song-Haven Virtual B3 instrument on Mac or PC. Onceconnection is achieved through either a MIDI interface, or through wirelessnetwork, it is simplyplug andplay, no setup required! In this layout, theUppermanual(Swell)controlssendMIDIonchannel#1,forFalcontoreceiveonPartone.Lowermanual (Great) controls sendMIDIonchannel#2, forFalcon to receiveonPart two.Controlsaredisplayedonthreepages,asseen inthescreenshotsbelow.Drawbar control works much like real Hammond drawbars. Pulling drawbarcontrolstowardsyouincreasesthesoundevenly.Theonscreendials intheFalconmainpanel(Infotab)willcorrespondwithyourmovementsineightdiscreetsteps,matchingthenumbertouched(orjustpassed)inthelayout.Percussioncontrolsarelaidout thesameasona realB3,althoughsince theycannotberockerswitches,touching anywhere in the switch changes the settingwith the red light indicatingtheupper selection.Thereare twoChorus/Vibrato controls, independent foreachmanual, Swell and Great. The “buttons” labeled “Chorus Vibrato selects between

Chorus or Vibrato. Again, “lit” status indicates selection of “Chorus”. No lightindicates“Vibrato”isselected.Dependingonwhichisselected,ChorussettingsC1,C2, C3, or Vibrato settings V1, V2 or V3 are selected when the corresponding“button” is touched. “Enhance” also offers independent control for each manual,increasing tube pre-amp saturation effect. Master effects controls (multis only)offers control of the spring reverb effect and rotary speaker simulation, includingspeed control (Chorale, Brake or Tremolo) and Overdrive distortion. Donot attempt to use theExpressionmapswithprogramsother than theonesmentionedabove, as it couldpotentiallydisrupt the one octave bass pedal sound,which is in the sameoctave as the key-switchassignmentsintheaforementionedprogramandmulti.7.3 Drawbar synths With a powerhouse like UVI Falcon toworkwith,why stop at Hammond soundswhenthesameengineandB3tone-wheelsamplescanbeusedtogointodrawbarcontrolledsynthesizerterritory,forcompletelyunique,controllablesoundsthatgofar beyond organs. A collection of programs and multis for this purpose can befound in the Extras/Drawbar synths folder. This includes a bank of authenticsounding pipe organ patches! Full drawbar controls remain! Other effects mayreplacePercussion,Vibrato/Chorus etc., butMIDICCwill remain to control them.Havefun!

8.0 Advanced 8.1 DAW control Almost all modern DAWs allow for automation ofMIDI controllers. As such, it isquitepossibletofullyautomateperformanceswithinaprojectbyautomatingeachoftheninedrawbars,aswellasthe Chorus/Vibrato,Percussion,Rotatingspeakerspeed,hardwiredpresetselectionandothercontrols,forcompleterecallandeditingcapability.

8.2 Customizing the hardwired key-switch presets

Before making any changes, it is advised that you work on copies, and keep theoriginalfilessafelyintact.

Certain of the programs and multis contain an octave of “hard-wired” presetsaccessedbykey-switches in theoctavebelowthe lowestorgannote. See [Section4.0,Presets].Tocustomizethesepresets,loadtheprogram“Drawbars+Presets.uvip”or“Drawbars+Presets_LM.uvip”.First,findthekey-switchyouwishtochange.Makenote of it’s item number found on the key-switch table [section 4.0, Presets]. InFalcon, select theList tab on the left side, and select theEdit tab for themiddlesection.IntheLayer(s)sectionontheleftside,locatethe16’layerthatcorrespondsto thekey-switchpresetyouwish tochange.Each16’ layerhasanumberafter it,indicatingwhich key-switch preset it affects. 8.3 Using alternate MIDI Learn Most of the controls will work correctly whenMIDI Learn is activated by right-clickingonacontrol.However,certaincontrolswork incrementally.These includedrawbars (8 steps), Chorus/Vibrato (3 steps), and Rotary speed (3 steps). Thesecontrols require theMapping feature found in Falcon. In the current version ofFalcon,selectingMIDILearnfromtheinitialpop-upmenuwhenyouright-clickoneof these incremental controls will disconnect the MIDI mapping. It will alsodisconnect the reverse direction settings for authentic drawbar control (regularfadersmoveawayfromyoutoraiselevels,whereaspullingdrawbarstowardsyouraisesthelevel).SelectingMIDIUnlearnwillalsomakethesesamedisconnectionsand should also be avoided. Fortunately, there is an alternativemethod for usingMIDI Learn that only requires a couple more clicks and does not disconnectanything.Hereistheprocedure:Right-clickacontroltobringupthepop-upmenu.InsteadofselectingMIDILearn,SelectEditModulation. Intheboxthatpopsup,rightclickonthecurrentMIDIassignmentdisplayedintheupperleftcorner.Fromthepop-upmenu thatappears, selectMIDILearn.Movingyour chosencontrollerassignsit.Closetheboxesandyourreadytogo!Althoughyourphysicalcontroller(suchasaModwheel)willofcourseoperateinacontinuousmanner,whenmovingthecontrolleryoushouldseetherelevantdialontheFalconMainpageincrementina prescribed number of steps, rather than in a continuous manner.
