    VALENTINE'S SPECIAL

    1 FOR A CITY GETAWAY: STAND-UPPADDLEBOARDING (SUP)Want an out-of-town activity that doesn’t require

lots of planning? Go stand-up paddleboarding

(SUP). It’s less intense than surfing, doesn’t

disturb the environment, and its gentle pacemeans you can keep up a conversation, while

gliding over water. From Manila, one of the

nearest spots to do this is in aal Lake, the

same lake which is prominently in view when

weekenders visit the many restaurants and

retreat options in agaytay. FiliSUP offers

paddleboarding tours where you can expect

to learn basic techniques, see the lake with its

green vistas and bird sightings up close, and with

the seclusion of the area, the unlikelihood that

you’ll bump into any of your darned exes. Email

FiliSUP founder and instructor, ono Legarda at

[email protected] to reserve. – Anika Ventura

    VALENTINE'S SPECIAL

6 FOR A CLASSIC, GOOD DINNER:PRIME 101In this newly renovated space in Makati City,

black curtains section off wooden armchairs,

there’s an adjoining showroom of furniture by

Jennifer de Dios, and artwork from national

artists. But the best part about dining here is

    their "freestyle" philosophy. Customize table

settings, request a little extra foie gras stuffed

in your portobellos, or even order a version

of your favorite food. Be sure to reserve,

however, as everything is dependent on

    ingredient availability. Tis normally includes

seafood from oysters to soft-shell crab, while

the premium steak cuts—whether it's their

Prime 101 signature with a 50/50 ratio of meat

to marbling or the Cadbury chocolate-fed

    Australian Mayura—are expertly seared, then

basted and broiled on a bed of caramelized

    onions. Budget around Php2,000/person.

     Barangay Bangkal, Makati

7 FOR A PLACE WITH DARK CORNERS:THE BLIND PIGNothing spells romance and a night winding

down like a cozy corner in a dark speakeasy.

ake a booth at the dimly lit bar for some

    top-notch, customized cocktails. Choose

your poison well (the bartender can make

the cocktails to almost any specifications)

while the hushed atmosphere and jazzy

soundtrack set the mood for one-on-one

    time with your date. – Carla Villanueva;

227 Salcedo St, Legazpi Village, Makati City

8 FOR A SAXOPHONE EVENING: TAGOJAZZ CAFÉAs far as hidden gems go, ago Jazz Café

fulfills both criteria. "ago," which, in

Filipino, means "hidden/to hide," is an

    unassuming restaurant and watering

hole for the city’s best jazz musicians.

ucked away in a quiet neighborhood

in Cubao, both amateur artists and jazz

legends frequent here either as patrons or

performers. Either way, you are in good

company. Manila may not be your blatantly

romantic city, but some soul-stirring, live jazz music makes for the perfect foreplay.

    – Abi Portillo; #14 Main Avenue, Cubao,

    Quezon City

9 FOR CELEBRATING SINGLEHOOD: THEBREWERYIt’s time for a pint of four, or five. Located

at the sprawling Palace complex, this is

Manila's newest craft beer shrine. It's an on-

site microbrewery and spacious, mess hall-

like tavern. Order sharing plates from meaty

    sandwiches, sausage platters, gooey cheese

pizza, to pulled chicken fries. Many of the

    recipes incorporate various beer by-products,

    like beer-infused cheesecake and beer

caramel-topped skillet cookie. Te playlist is

curated by part-owner and local rock legend

Rico Blanco, but isn't so riotous as to inhibit

conversation. For that, you can just mosey

    along to the neighboring hotspots—Valkyrie,

Pool Club, or Revel. On Valentine's eve,

Valkyrie is bringing in Dutch DJ Quintino,

so expect to join a massive crowd of young

    hearts running wild and free. – Gio Dionisio;

10th Avenue corner 38th Street, Uptown

     Parade, Bonifacio Global City, aguig
