I Was Just Thinking...

Satisfying our basic need for food and eliminating the possibility of encountering those who are hungry is both a primal basic need for an individual, and a basic primal duty of every single community.

Pretty soon, you will be ankle deep in matzah meal. It’s Pesach time again and that strange time of year when we clean out our cupboards, our shelves and our spirits of all the chametz that has accumulated since last Pesach. We engage in a weeklong denial that Pesach foods taste good, that our cholesterol doesn’t go up just because we’re eating a dozen

eggs a day and that kosher for Passover pasta is not an oxymoron. That being said, while Pesach may ask us to do some things we may not care for with regard to our eating, it also asks us to do something regarding other people and their ability to eat. In the beginning of the Seder, the Haggadah tells us, “This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come in and eat. Everyone is obligated to celebrate Passover. This year we are here; next year we shall be in the Land of Israel. This year we are slaves. Next year we shall be a free people in the Land of Israel.” Let all who are hungry come in and eat. It is an interesting command that begins our collective, communal story. Why does the story of our people begin with a command to invite all who are hungry to come in and eat? I don’t know about you, but I have never had a hungry stranger into my home for Seder, even though the door may be open. So what do we do with such a command? How should it be understood in light of our own situations nowadays? I believe the placement of the command early on in the Haggadah is there to teach us something about the overall possibility of redemption. Remember that the Haggadah is the quintessential story of Divine redemption. And it’s not just any story; it’s our story so it matters to us more. We are also commanded to feel as if we were personally freed from Egypt, so how much the more so is this a story of our individual as well as our collective destiny. So the story begins with a simple command, “Let all who are hungry come in and eat.” Think about it. Satisfying our basic need for food and eliminating the possibility of encountering those who are hungry is both a primal basic need for an individual, and a basic primal duty of every single community. As Isaiah said, “If you offer your compassion to the hungry and satisfy the famished creature then shall your light shine in darkness and

your gloom shall be like noonday.” (Isaiah 58:3) We know the studies that show that people who are well fed and have a nutritious diet are both mentally and physically healthier, stronger and more able to deal with the stresses and strains of daily life. What we also know is that it is possible to eradicate hunger and food shortages throughout this country and even the world with a little effort. What can we do? The best way to systematically eliminate hunger is to contribute to MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. Founded in 1985, Mazon is a national, nonprofit agency, which allocates donations from the Jewish community to nonprofit organizations providing food, help and hope to hungry people of all faiths and backgrounds. Mazon’s hunger-relief efforts are funded by Jews and others who donate three percent of the cost of weddings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, other joyous

and life-cycle events; who contribute to Mazon at the High Holy Days and Passover; and who make contributions in honor or in memory of friends and loved

ones. Mazon (“food “ in Hebrew) was founded to build a bridge between Jews who enjoy the blessings of abundance, and the millions of children and adults who are hungry, or who live at the very edge of hunger, each day. Even in this era of unprecedented abundance, more than 33 million Americans, including 12 million children, are hungry or at the very edge of hunger, because their families lack the money to buy sufficient food. There is simply no need for this tragedy to continue on further. You can help. You can make a difference. If you are ready to let all who are hungry have a chance to eat, then you will not only save a life, you will have contributed to saving the world. You can find Mazon at www.mazon.org. How does the Haggadah end? We think it ends with, “Next year in Jerusalem.” Check your Haggadah. Most Haggadahs end with the song, “Who Knows One?” And therein lays the eternal question. If we follow God’s command to help those who are in need, to Let all who are hungry come in and eat, will we, indeed, come to know the One, the Redeemer of all? I pray this is so, for next year, in Jerusalem, may it be God’s will that every single person on earth know peace, happiness, and prosperity. Debbie, Molly and Sammy wish you and yours a Chag Sameach, and a sweet Passover holiday. Rabbi Andrew Paley [email protected]

It’s not going to change that much, you know, at least not in our lifetime, or even our great-grandchildren’s. Even with global warming, the climate will remain pretty much as it is. There will still be four seasons in the Northeast, heat and humidity in Florida, heat and no humidity in Arizona. Farmers will still look up at the sky hoping for rain, and at other times hoping for no rain. Bears and other such critters will hibernate for

the winter - and we will not be concerned for our survival in any of this. We have apparently become “season-less.” People can survive in places like Florida and Arizona in the summer because of air-conditioning and because they are outside as little as possible during the heat of the day. The northern cities of Nome and Anchorage exist because of heated buildings and insulation. We’ve also become somewhat migratory. When it’s too hot, we look to travel to somewhere cooler. When it’s too cold, we look to vacation somewhere warmer. The times of our lives are no longer dictated by the turning of the seasons. The hope that someday this would indeed be the case seems to be built into the Jewish holiday calendar. Among our earliest festivals were the three agricultural celebrations of Sukkot, which we observe immediately after Yom Kippur, Passover, usually in April, and Shavuot, in late May or early June. They were called the “pilgrimage festivals” because the people would make pilgrimages to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices at the Temple. The holidays themselves were tied to, respectively, the ingathering of the Fall harvest, the beginning of the Spring growing season and the new births among the flocks, and the wheat and barley harvest at the beginning of the Summer. But, although these meanings remained part of the holidays, in each case a historical layer of meaning was added, sometimes more than one. Sukkot was tied to the historical experience of crossing the wilderness after leaving Egypt, and the sukkah itself taken to represent the huts, or booths our ancestors dwelt in during their trek. Passover became the celebration of freedom and the Exodus itself, and Shavuot became an observance of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Thus the pattern was set: originally bound irrevocably to the vagaries of climate and season, we entered historical time and loosened those bonds more and more. To be sure, we do not pretend that we are no longer creatures of nature. Quite the contrary. We observe these ancient holidays in order to preserve our connections to our past. At the same time we use what those connections have taught us to shape the future. Come and experience the magnificent sweep of Jewish history and humanity’s development. Celebrate Passover with us at the Temple for a second night Seder on Sunday, April 20th at 6:00pm (and later in the year, Shavuot and Sukkot). Come and celebrate our past, our present, and our future. Come and experience another contribution that we Jews have made to the people of the world: a season for all our times. We’re Building A Better World! Please call, email, or stop by the preschool office to register for preschool for the 2008-2009 school year and for summer camp. This year, our theme for summer camp is Building a Better World. The children will have fun splashing in our wading pools and running through our sprinklers, and learn how to protect our environment. The values of Tikun Olam and Gemilut Hasadim will be emphasized this summer. A world of discovery awaits your child! Please check the preschool section of the Temple Shalom website to find applications for summer camp and school for 2008-2009. Remember that School Year Plus students are automatically registered for camp upon school registration. Please call if you have any questions or are unable to download the applications.

Who was Julia Michele Warren?

Julia Michele Warren was the first camper to sign up to attend Greene Family Camp during its opening session in 1976. Michele loved camp and everything that it had to offer. A few months after her happy experience at camp Michele

had a tragic horseback riding accident that ended her life. In her honor, a fund was established -- The Julia Michele Warren-Greene Family Camp Scholarship Fund. Many of you have sent children to Greene Family Camp and received scholarship assistance. It may be that you yourself, in the past thirty-two years, were the recipient of financial assistance to attend Greene Family Camp. If your child is having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, or if you yourself were a scholarship recipient, or if you want to honor someone special, you may fulfill all of these mitzvot by contributing to the Julia Michele Warren Scholarship Fund. At Temple Shalom, through the Scholarship Committee chaired by Martha Oberman, we try to accommodate as many children as possible. But, we are obviously limited by the donations that are made to the GFC fund. You may want to know the exciting news that Greene Family Camp, for the first time ever, is giving a grant of $1,000.00 to 100 first time campers to encourage and financially assist those children who have never been to Greene Family Camp before. As a parent who sent her children to Greene Family Camp for the summers, I can personally vouch for the experiential benefits the child receives through the educational, religious, and social activities. Every year we put our effort to help more children to attend Greene Family Camp. Summer is coming soon and we have received many applications for scholarships. I hope you will consider the Julia Michele Warren Scholarship Fund as one of the funds to which you choose to donate. May Julia Michele Warren’s memory always be for a blessing. Youth Department News

As you know, Barrett Harr, our Youth Director, has been on maternity leave with the adorable Shoshanna Elise. However, the youth department carried on many activities in her absence thanks to dedicated volunteers! Here are some of our highlights.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank You!!! An enormous thank you goes out to our amazing youth committee chairs, Heidi and Mike Barishman for all of their help coordinating all of the youth events during my maternity leave, chaperoning events, and being a contact for all youth matters. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our youth!

NKB – New Kids on the Block Crazy Bowling and Havdalah found our K-4th graders at 300 Dallas Bowling Alley, bowling backwards and between their legs and having a great time with old and new friends. Thanks to Cindy Pius for organizing and hosting the event. Thanks also to Carrie Ring and Laurel Fisher for their help that day corralling the children and leading the service!

Chaverim Good Games and Good Times Our Chaverim youth enjoyed movies, games, and pizza in the teen lounge one Sunday after Religious School. We even bought new foosballs for the occasion! Thanks to Julie Bradley for organizing and hosting this event!

JYG Retreat Twelve Temple Shalom 6th-8th graders attended the JYG Retreat at Greene Family Camp in March. It was a great weekend to spend with old friends and meet new ones from the entire Texas-Oklahoma region. It was a wonderful introduction to what NFTY-TOR has to offer our youth.

SHFTY Winter Events Our February 23 DAFTY/SHFTY Scavenger Hunt was a huge success! 20 Temple Shalom 8th-12th graders attended along with 15 Temple Emanu-El youth. The Galleria will never be the same! We mixed and mingled at Havdalah, enjoyed mall food, and

learned more than we ever wanted to know about the stores in the mall! Thanks to all who chaperoned. Our SHFTY Driving Event took place at Adventure Landing on a very cold March 8 evening! Mike Barishman showed the kids all about changing a tire, checking car fluids and tire pressure, and what goes on under the hood of a car. They’re all ready to drive, parents, so watch out! Then we raced go-carts and laser tagged each other!

Rac L’Taken Matt Halpern and Dana Schmucker were the first students to represent Temple Shalom at the nationally attended Religious Action Center’s L’Taken Social Justice Seminar in Washington, DC. This seminar is an intensive four-day study kallah focusing on Jewish values and social justice. Every year more than 100 congregations from across the country bring their high school students to participate in this exciting event. This unique Washington opportunity enables students to hear from experts both inside and outside the Jewish community. Every L’Taken Seminar covers several different issue areas in a variety of interactive formats. Each seminar includes an opportunity for students to tour the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and participate in Havdalah services at one of the memorials. Students also sample the vibrancy of Georgetown and other exciting areas of Washington, DC. Thank you to the generosity of the congregants of Temple Shalom and the Social Action Committee for making this trip possible. A special thanks to Rabbi Jeremy Schneider for escorting them!

Social Action Project: The Youth Department is

participating in The Feinstein Challenge!

We need your non-perishable food items!

We are taking the challenge!! Here is Alan Feinstein’s (www.feinsteinfoundation.org) Spring 2008 Challenge: He will donate $1 million to hunger-fighting agencies nationwide later this year. The amount each agency will receive will be directly proportional to the amount the agency raised on its own to fight hunger during March and April 2008. This includes both financial contributions and the donation of non-perishable food items. (Jewish Family Service will receive $1 credit per item in the challenge.) JFS and the North Texas Food Bank have fed more than 2,000 families each year for decades.

Here’s How You Can Help• Put your non-perishable food items in the donation box in front of the Education Office at Temple Shalom by Sunday, April 27. Only unopened, in date, FooD items, will count for this drive.• You can make a financial donation to the Food Pantry either online at www.jfsdallas.org, through the mail, or by calling Jewish Family Service (972-437-9950) with your credit card number. (Be sure to note that your donation is for the Food Pantry.)

• You can donate non-perishable food items to the JFS Food Pantry by dropping them off at JFS. Help us help Jewish Family Service feed our community! Questions? Email Heidi at [email protected].

Shalom Singles 39-9

It’s really wonderful to see the enthusiasm for Shalom Singles, which is still going strong; and it’s especially exciting for a few of those people who have found their special someone! The group, for Jewish singles in their late 30’s to early 60’s, now has 315 names on our roster and continues to have 2-3 fun events each month. On March 23rd, a group of singles helped Federation in their Super Sunday campaign, and then enjoyed a nice brunch provided by Federation. March 30th found a big group at Tipperary Inn, enjoying great music, food and each other. At this writing, April plans include a Happy Hour at BJ’s, a brunch at Dream Cafe and a visit to a local vineyard + wine tastings! A trip to the Arboretum and a picnic lunch there are in the works for May. Please check our website at templeshalomdallas.org for all the latest event info. If you’re a Jewish single, or know of any Jewish singles, who would like to get in on the fun, please contact Judy Parker at [email protected] or [email protected] and check the Temple website for updates at www.templeshalomdallas.org. We also welcome your ideas and help. The more involved you are, the more friends and fun you’ll have!

Feinstein Offers Another$1 Million Challenge

To Help Fight HungerMarch 1st – April 30th

Jewish Family Service is participating in this Feinstein Challenge, a matching grant challenge. All donations (food and cash) to the Jewish Family Service Food Pantry are counted towards this challenge. This is a great time for everyone to organize food drives, bring in your own food items, and share this information with friends, colleagues, neighbors and, of course, your family! JFS will receive a percentage of $1 million based on the amounts of donations they receive. You can drop off your donations at Temple Shalom or take them directly to JFS (located on Arapaho Road, just east of the Dallas North Toll Road). We have a box by the Religious School Office. We hope you will partner with JFS in an easy way to help others.

Put More Fun in Your Life - Join a Havurah!

A Havurah is a small fellowship group of people (of similar age and/or interests) who get together regularly for Jewish study, holidays, speakers, discussions, outings, and whatever other activities that particular group desires. Havurah means friendship; hopefully by meeting regularly, each group will bond and stay together for many years. We are currently re-energizing the Havurah program at Temple Shalom: Haverot for young couples, young families, interfaith couples, empty nesters, Parents Without Partners, singles for 40s and 50s, and singles 60+, just to name a few. Watch for details of meetings in Plano, Dallas and other areas. We welcome your ideas too; so pick up the phone or send an e-mail, but get the ball rolling! Enhance your life with new friends and new interests. JOIN A HAVURAH! For further information, please contact Lonna Rae and Jerry Silverman, Co-Chairs of Haverot at 214-636-4799 or [email protected]. If interested in either singles group, please contact Judy Troyan Parker at 972-386-5969 or [email protected].

SOCIAL ACTION OPPORTUNITIES

Check out the Social Action pages of the Temple website at http://templeshalomdallas.org/p-184.aspx. Volunteer and donation opportunities abound within it for all members of the congregation and we are ready and willing to listen to what YOU would like to see. Contact editors Gail Gilbert (972) 3871234, [email protected] and Jerri Grunewald (972) 735-9309, [email protected] with your comments and suggestions today!

Items for the Needy We collect various items which are given to The Stew Pot (outreach to the impoverished, mentally and physically challenged in Dallas). All donations of old eye glasses and unused travel size toiletries can be left with Joy in Rabbi Paley’s office and will be truly appreciated.

Please join us to help Raise Awareness and Funds to Provide Mammograms for low-income women. Join Dr. Sheron Patterson, breast cancer survivors and their families and friends to build a Habitat for Humanity home with a special purpose. Sisterhood Bud Program

Sisterhood implemented a lovely new plan this year called the Sisterhood Bud Program. It represents our warm way of welcoming a new member. Please sign up to welcome a new “Bud” and

be her Buddy. Membership will do our best to make a good match for both of you. Duties include making a welcome call, inviting them to a meeting, program or luncheon and providing feedback to the retention committee with a simple e-mail or phone call. If you would like to be a Sisterhood Buddy, please contact Jerri Grunewald, Membership Retention Chair, 972-735-9309, or [email protected].

Remember the Temple in Your Will

Temple Shalom is committed to preserving the future of our congregation for generations to come. Bequests of all sizes are important resources for the Temple, and we encourage you to be a link to the future by remembering the Temple in your will. Your lasting tribute is your commitment to the survival of our religion, our Temple, and our people. A bequest can easily be established by adding a simple codicil to your will. Additionally, many other options exist to leave a legacy for Temple Shalom. A brochure with more information is available in our main foyer, or by contacting the administrative offices. For more information, please contact our Executive Director Steve Lewis at 972-661-1810 ext. 202. Your planned gift will serve the future of our congregation and community. Thank you for helping assure the strength and health of Temple Shalom for generations to come.

TEMPLE SHALOM ANNUAL FUND 00-08 It is with profound appreciation and gratitude that we recognize the 260+ donors who generously contributed to the Annual Fund this year. By their participation these individuals and families confirmed that Temple Shalom is an essential part of their lives, the foundation of our children’s Jewish education, and a source of strength for our Jewish community. Contributions continued to increase in this, the third year of the Annual Fund, rising to a total of over $158,000. These gifts will be used to help strengthen our programming and operating budget, increase our endowment reserves, help provide for the future of our Temple, and continue our commitment to welcome all who enter our doors, regardless of financial ability. Our entire congregation will benefit from the generosity and vision of the members and friends listed here. We gratefully thank all of our valued donors, and sincerely apologize if any name has been inadvertently omitted.
