Dear Friends,

We live in a Digital Transformation Age.

From cell phones and iPads, to thousands of

apps and wearable technology that monitor

our health — the digital age is upon us. And

nowhere is that more true than in the world

of higher education and I am proud to say

that Maryville is a revolutionary leader in

this arena.

Our digital connectivity is a powerful tool in

helping our students connect with the world

around them and with their own personalized

learning approach. Built upon that foundation,

our Active Learning Ecosystem is the linchpin

of a comprehensive experience that educates,

empowers and prepares students for careers

before they graduate. That is why Maryville

is the “Fourth Fastest Growing Private

University” in the nation (topfive status for

the fourth year in a row) and we boast a

97 percent career placement rate.

Maryville’s approach combines life coaching,

learning diagnostics and a cuttingedge

pedagogy that engages students as individual

learners and prepares them through problem

solving, realworld based internships and

experiences for the professions that they

will enter upon graduation. This means that

every student is at the center of a series of

connections designed to support their journey.

In 2018–19, we accelerated a multimillion

dollar investment in innovative learning

spaces, stateoftheart technology and

seamless mobile learning tools, all designed

to enhance and augment the student living

and learning experience. Our faculty, life

coaches, learning designers and student

services staff are a testament to Maryville’s

focused strategic effort.

Our vision statement provides a laser like

focus to all our programs and initiatives,

and it is also a call to action for the entire

Maryville community: Maryville will be the

innovative leader in higher education promoting

a revolution in student learning that expands

access and opportunities for all.

That is who we are and what we are doing.

It is as modern as today’s smartphones and as

time honored as the words of Madeleine Sophie

Barat, who said, “It shows weakness of mind to

hold too much to the beaten track, through fear

of innovation.” (C1860)

Like the Religious of the Sacred Heart and those

who followed, Maryville is laying a foundation

that is revolutionizing higher education and

shaping it for the future. In that journey your

counsel, generosity and engagement is always

appreciated. Thank you for all of your support

and advocacy for this great University.

Sincerely,

Mark Lombardi, PhD

THE PERSONAL COUNSELOR When he experiences periods of stress due to academic or social pressures, Posley talks with personal counselor Verne Wilson. Wilson is always quick to share tools to help Posley navigate challenges and stay motivated. In addition to appointments in the counseling center, the pair often connect over lunch or catch up during campus events.

ason Posley is a leader for the Black Male Initiative, a group addressing the retention and graduation rates of African American men at Maryville. Posley said the group has played an important role in his life because it provides a safe place to ask for help. “There are so many people in my corner who want me to succeed,” Posley said. “As soon as I pick up my phone

Sand send a text saying I’m struggling, the Maryville faculty and staff respond and help me navigate my challenges.”

Nationwide, only 34 percent of African American men complete a college degree — the lowest rate compared to other races and ethnicities — according to the U.S. Department of Education. Maryville’s Black Male Initiative assists students in their academic, personal and professional endeavors to help reverse this alarming trend. Posley has leaned on the group for resources regarding job placement and professional development. “It’s a village of people who help take care of me,” he said.

When he’s not busy studying for his physical therapy classes or hosting events as a resident assistant in Mouton Hall, Posley can

be found in the Center for Student Engagement. He was recently voted president of the Association of Black Collegians. The group pro vides leadership opportunities for black students, and strives to educate the larger campus community on black issues and culture.

Posley also helps create a more inclusive campus environment as one of Maryville University’s Multicultural Scholars. Through a variety of programs and events, he collaborates with peers and staff to develop selfawareness and awareness of others, and learns how to engage and participate in difficult conversations around diversity and inclusion. The Multicultural Scholars Program also provides Posley with tuition assistance. Without the financial support, he would not be able to complete his degree.

“I’ve learned so many new things thanks to the Multicultural Scholars Program,” Posley said. “Having the opportunity to get involved on the Maryville campus and gain knowledge of different cultures has been invaluable.”

JTHE STUDENT Physical therapy major Jason Posley is a member of Maryville’s Multicultural Scholars Program, which provides scholarships to students from diverse backgrounds. As part of the program, Posley collaborates with peers and staff to create an inclusive campus environment. Together, they create programs and activities that nurture dialogue among diverse student groups and engender respect for all people and their experiences.

THE RESIDENTIAL LIFE COORDINATOR Posley works closely with residential life coordinator Jennifer Susnic to plan numerous events ranging from social networking activities to programs designed to help students become more successful academically. Susnic is always there to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents.

THE LIFE COACH The transition to college life was less daunting for Posley because of his life coach, Julie Krebel. Krebel teaches him time management and study skills, like finding different locations around campus to study and taking more frequent breaks during long study sessions. Krebel also sets up weekly sessions for him with a peer tutor.

THE OFFICE OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Turan Mullins, assistant dean for diversity and inclusion, mentors Posley in his student organization leadership roles. Mullins provides counsel and advice, serves as a sounding board and connects Posley with members of the Maryville community to help him accomplish his leadership goals.

What careers can you pursue with your online MBA in HR Management degree?

If you’ve been in the workforce, you’ve most likely engaged with the human resources department on some level. Since almost every business uses HR professionals, job opportunities aren’t

limited to any specific industry. It’s simply a matter of where your passion lies.

If you’re interested in planning strategies, directing human resources activities, and leading an organization’s talent management, this degree can prepare you for big things. With your HR master’s

and related experience, you can qualify for leadership positions in HR, such as:

Compensation and Benefits Manager

2017 Median Salary:

$119,120

Human Resources Manager

2017 Median Salary:

$110,120

Compensation, Benefits, and

Job Analysis Specialist

2017 Median Salary:

$62,680

THE STUDENT As a financial relationship specialist at a local bank, Armando Laing helps recruit, hire and train new employees in addition to assisting customers with their personal banking needs. He plans to move into a human resourcesspecific role after he graduates with his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in human resources management.

THE PROFESSOR Gary Hacker, an adjunct faculty member in the John E. Simon School of Business, spent 35 years working for the National GeospatialIntelligence Agency. He teaches the capstone class for the online MBA program, during which students research the financial performance of realworld companies and identify ways to increase revenue. Laing relies on Hacker’s industry expertise to research Walgreens and its growing network of instore health clinics.

THE ONLINE LIFE COACH As a member of the online life coaching team, Brian Farrar connects students like Laing to various academic, career and campus resources. He also uses learning diagnostic tools to assess strengths and explore how students can best apply those attributes to academic, personal and professional choices. Farrar is available via email and phone, and through the Student Success Hub, an online portal with helpful videos, discussion boards and frequently asked questions.

ATHE ACADEMIC ADVISOR Laing participates in monthly phone calls with his academic advisor, Erica Hulse. Their collaborative relationship is an integral part of Laing’s academic success. Hulse recommended a sequence of coursework that ensures Laing has a strong foundation in the fundamental practices of business before pursuing more complex topics.

After working a full day as a finan cial relationship specialist at a local bank, Armando Laing heads home to set up camp in his bedroomturnedoffice. Laing is pursuing his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in human resources management in the hopes of securing a higherlevel position in an area he is passionate about.

“I thought I wasn’t smart enough for a master’s degree,” Laing said. “When I received my acceptance letter, I was so happy that I started crying. I’m grateful to Maryville for giving me the opportunity to pursue my degree, and for saying ‘you can do it!’”

Laing is able to pursue his education thanks to Maryville’s online programs. The online environment allows Laing to attend class whenever and wherever he wants. Additionally, Laing appreciates that the program is offered in a convenient, eightweek format. “The structure makes sense to me, and allows me to balance my professional and personal obligations with my education,” he said.

A large part of Laing’s success is the support he receives from his academic advisor, Erica Hulse. Laing participates in monthly phone calls with Hulse, who answers questions, troubleshoots issues and provides encouragement. She was Laing’s cheerleader while planning out his firstever Maryville class schedule, and again during a challenging corporate finance class.

“I can always go to Erica when I am struggling with a class or deciding what courses to take next,” Laing said. “She is instrumental in helping me move forward in the coursework, and her support makes it easier for me to succeed in the program.”

For other working adults considering going back to school, Laing shares one piece of advice: “Go for it!”

I CAN GO TO ERICA WHEN I NEED SUPPORT OR HELP

STRATEGIZING MY NEXT MOVE.

Nearly 46 million adults in the United States aspire to complete a college degree they began years ago, and more than 40 million others could enhance their career prospects, but have never attended a highereducation

institution. “If you feel like getting your master’s degree, just do it!” Laing said. “The more you know, the better. I believe knowledge is the key to be able to succeed in life.”

ricia Lyons always wanted to be a nurse, but faced multiple obstacles in her path. Now, she is achieving her academic goals and will graduate with her bachelor’s in nursing because of the support she’s received from the Maryville community.

“The Maryville faculty and staff are phenomenal, and everyone I work with has been so encouraging,” she said.

One relationship has proven more important than all the others: that of her academic advisor, Rhonda Pugh, assistant professor of nursing. “I can call Pugh about anything, and she always helps me take a deep breath and refocus,” Lyons said.

When Lyons recently experienced her hardest day at work following a patient death, her first call was to Pugh. “She told me I was there for a reason, and that I helped the family in ways I cannot understand,” Lyons said. “She reminded me I was made for this career, and that I did a great job. Her words allowed me to keep going and not give up.”

Lyons began her medical career as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home before transferring to Mercy Hospital Washington, where she became a patient care technician in the emergency department. Shortly thereafter, Lyons and her husband were thrilled to find out they were pregnant. A second child followed a few years later. Life got busy. And then it slowed down.

In 2008, Lyons’ mother passed away suddenly in a car accident. Lyons became the primary caregiver for her father and her two grandparents, and was forced to put school on hold. The next several years taught her valuable lessons about living and dying.

Through it all, Lyons never gave up her dream of becoming a nurse. She finished her nursing school prerequisite classes in between the demands of family life and working full time. When she received her Maryville acceptance letter, her children surprised her with a homemade cookie cake with the words “Congratulations Mom” written in colorful frosting. “Nursing has been on my radar for a long time,” she said. “I joke that I just lived life a little backward.”

T

THE ENROLLMENT ADVISORAdvisors such as Nicholas Silva, assistant director in the School of Adult and Online Education, set Lyons up for success in the evening and weekend nursing program by guiding her through the application and enrollment process. This included helping Lyons transfer prerequisite class credits, enroll in nursing coursework and complete required paperwork for clinical rotations.

THE STUDENT Tricia Lyons works as a patient care technician in the emergency department at Mercy Hospital Washington. In her role, she provides services that directly affect a patient’s comfort while also assisting doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. She recently celebrated 15 years of service and is looking forward to taking the next step in her professional career: finishing her degree so she can become a nurse.

THE ACADEMIC ADVISORWarm and unapologetically herself, Rhonda Pugh, MSN, RN, assistant professor of nursing, connects with Lyons on a different, more personal level. She is available all hours of the day, and her opendoor policy includes “Back Porch Lunches” at McNally House, where she provides a space for students to relax and build community.

THE PROFESSOR Lyons is never afraid to ask questions in the classroom of Jennifer Taylor, PhD, RN, CNE, assistant professor of nursing, because Taylor adapted her teaching approach to student strengths and learning styles. Taylor also provides additional instruction during office hours and even holds evening review sessions to ensure Lyons and her classmates mastered the challenging pathophysiology and medicalsurgical nursing curriculum.

THE NURSING LAB COORDINATORIn Maryville’s stateoftheart nursing simulation lab, students learn and practice nursing skills on computerized mannequins mimicking reallife situations. Jennifer Daye, MSN, RN, coordinator of the nursing learning lab and clinical assistant professor of nursing, is a resource for Lyons during lab sessions, even providing candy and PlayDoh as stress relievers.

Dear Friends,

Maryville’s momentum is building. The signs of exponential growth and expansion are everywhere, from our Active Learning Ecosystem to our new Visionary Leaders Wall on the Gander Quad, to our new stateoftheart Athletic Complex for lacrosse, softball and tennis and the development of new academic degrees and programs. Additionally, we are finalizing plans to completely innovate our academic buildings and learning spaces to keep pace with our Active Learning Ecosystem and the dynamic, personalized learning that our students thrive on and demand. These stateoftheart spaces will accelerate and enhance the student learning experience so that we can maintain and grow our already remarkable 97 percent career placement rate for graduates.

Programmatically, Maryville is expanding its leadingedge School of Adult and Online Education with 10 new online programs for Fall 2019; while students on campus continue to discover unique and creative ways of using digital tools to design their own personal learning experiences.

Overall enrollment for Fall 2018 grew by nearly 20 percent to more than 9,300 students from all 50 states and 55 countries. Significantly, the St. Louis American Foundation honored the University with its 2018 Corporate Diversity Award, recognizing Maryville’s institutional commitment to a culturally rich, inclusive environment. Students of color now represent 25 percent of Maryville’s total student population—an increase of 50 percent since 2008.

BOARD OF TRUSTEESLETTER FROM THOMAS M. BOUDREAU

We also began a process of partnering with community organizations (Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis) and key school districts (Jennings, Riverview Gardens, Normandy) to bring our dynamic life coaching model to more than 900 students at the K–12 level.

In the past year, companies like Bayer, Boeing, Emerson and Rawlings showed their support for Maryville’s campus and outreach programs, while alumni giving and programmatic support increased our overall fundraising by 20 percent from the previous fiscal year (2018).

I am proud of all that has been accomplished at Maryville, and the accelerated growth of our University to national prominence making this a good time to step down as chair of the board of trustees. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served in this leadership role for the past 12 years and pleased to pass the torch to our new chair, Ed Ryan. I will continue to serve on the board as I am as excited as you to help Maryville continue its rise and to reach new heights as we reshape the face of higher education in the United States.

Thank you for all you have helped us accomplish and for your continued support as we lead the revolution in higher education.

memory, and recognizes donors who have contributed $1,000 or more within a given

fiscal year. Donors who work for matching gift companies also are recognized as

Duchesne Society members when matching corporate funds are provided, along with

a personal gift, to total $1,000 or more. Following are Duchesne Society members from

Planned gifts such as bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts and

charitable gifts of life insurance have, and will continue to have, a major impact on the future

of Maryville University. The Mouton Society recognizes the importance of planned gifts to

the University and is named in honor of Mother Marie Odeide Mouton, RSCJ, ’35, who was

Maryville’s first president and a nationally prominent pioneer in the field of education.

Maryville’s enrollment increase of nearly 20 percent since Fall 2018 is just the beginning of the story. This consistent growth reflects a number of factors — from our commitment to diversity, to our stateoftheart technology, to the network of life coaches and mentors who support our students both personally and academically. Maryville’s partnerships with local corporations, foundations and K–12 schools are on the upswing, too. With generous support from businesses and charitable foundations, we are helping teachers in underserved schools improve their resources and methodologies, while helping young students increase their skill sets and begin a path toward higher education.

Our laser focus on student outcomes creates a compelling reason for donors to support Maryville in every area, from scholarships to academic programs.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS: 2018–2019

• Total gifts and pledges increased by $1 million

from FY 2018 to FY 2019.

• Gifts and grants from corporations, foundations

and other organizations increased by nearly

2 million, from 1.9 million in FY 2018 to

3.8 million in FY 2019.

• Donorfunded endowed and annual scholarships

have risen significantly in the past four years.

Since the 2015–2016 academic year, the total

number of scholarships awarded increased by

23 percent.

• Participation in giving by faculty and staff has

more than tripled in the past five years; nearly

200 faculty and staff members made a gift to

Maryville in FY 2019.
