Advising Information

If you would like registration advice, please schedule a meeting with your assigned advisor or Dr. Nicholas Toloudis. Prior to the meeting:

Ö run your PAWS Academic Requirements report Ö look at the requirements in the Undergraduate Bulletin Ö write a draft schedule for the semester

Consider asking questions about issues beyond the semester, such as study abroad or plans after graduation. For guidance on how to prepare better for your advisement session and plan your academic career, see the “Advising” links on the School of Humanities & Social Sciences website.

If a course is full or reserved for majors, please ask the instructor if you can have permission to enroll. If you continue to have problems, please contact Dr. Toloudis.

ACADEMIC HOLDS If you have an advising hold on your PAWS account, please make an appointment with Dr. Toloudis well ahead of your registration date.

OVERLOADINGThe standard semester academic load at TCNJ is 4 units per semester. If you wish to take more than 4.5 units, you may do so under the following conditions:

Ö only once during your academic career Ö have a minimum of a 3.3 GPA Ö have been at TCNJ for at least a full academic semester Ö have obtained permission from Dr. Toloudis and Dr. Lisa Grimm, Associate Dean of the School of

Humanities and Social Sciences.

The exception to this rule is if you are enrolled in an Intensive Language. If you are in an intensive section of Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Russian, and are not a first-semester Freshman, you may request to take a fifth course. This must be approved by Dr. Toloudis and Dr. Lisa Grimm.

A NOTE ABOUT BUSINESS COURSES Please take your upper level economics/international business course in the semester immediately after you take ECO 102: Macroeconomics. Since better mathematical skills improve student performance in economics courses, ECO 102 requires one of the following as a prerequisite: MAT 95, 96, 125, 127 or 128.

LANGUAGES ACROSS THE CURRICULUM Many courses on this list can be complemented with Languages Across the Curriculum credit. This is a one-quarter unit independent study whereby those students who have intermediate level proficiency in another language complement work in a course by utilizing their language skills. Students must enroll before the add/drop deadline. Please visit the LAC website or contact Dr. Compte for more information ([email protected]).

STUDY ABROADThis is a reminder that all International Studies majors are required to study abroad for a minimum of one academic semester (and you must pass at least 3 units). It is essential that you plan this in advance, in order to ensure that you are taking the correct courses and select a study abroad program that is well suited to your studies.

In planning your study abroad experience, be sure to consider programs/countries that complement your overall program of study. If you are studying French, for example, consider sites where you can work on your language skills. If you are interested in international development, consider programs that have a special strength in this area. Avoid selecting a study abroad program just because you really want to visit a country. Think of how your choice fits within your broader program of study.

Please ask early for letters of recommendation. Dr. Toloudis can assist with filling out your Academic Evaluation form. Please bring printed descriptions of the course(s) you want to take while abroad.

Honors in International Studies

Rising Seniors who have excelled academically in the major are eligible to apply for Honors in International Studies. Honors in International Studies is awarded to eligible graduating seniors who have been accepted into the program and successfully complete the following requirements:

1. Complete INT 498 Senior Capstone Seminar and earn a grade of B or above.2. Complete INT 497 Honors Thesis in International Studies with their faculty mentor and earn a grade of B

or above.3. Complete an Honors Thesis that is at least 50 pages in length, based on original research, and is

approved by the International Studies Honors Committee.

ELIGIBILITYYou may apply for the Honors track in International Studies if you have fulfilled the following:

1. Completed 20 credit hours (5 units) in coursework in International Studies, including no less than 12 hours (3 units) at The College. One of the completed courses must be INT 200.

2. Maintained an overall GPA of at least 3.5 at The College, as well as a GPA of at least 3.5 in courses counting toward the Major.

3. Completed the study abroad requirement for the major by the end of junior year.

Final selection requires the approval of an Honors Thesis Advisor and the International Studies Core Committee. The number of students accepted is limited; the Program will select a small number of students each year based on the thesis application, past coursework, and perceived likelihood of the student completing the thesis.

APPLICATION PROCESSInterested students should identify a faculty member from the International Studies faculty to ask to serve as the Honors Thesis Advisor. Once the student has found a faculty member who has agreed to serve as the Honors Thesis Advisor, they should work with that person to develop a project proposal that will be part of the student’s Application for Honors.

Applications from eligible students are due by April 1 of the student’s junior year. Students who are studying abroad in the spring semester may request an extension from the Director of International Studies, if needed. The application should include the following:

1. A description of the proposed thesis topic and research design2. A preliminary bibliography3. A project timeline4. The names of the Honors Thesis Advisor and a faculty member who will serve as a second reader for the

thesis. These two faculty, along with the Director of International Studies, will form the student’s Honors Thesis Committee.

Students will be notified by May 1 if their application has been approved.

Requirementsfor the Major

12 total course units are required for the International Studies major. Each student completes 5 courses as part of the major core and 7 courses in an area of specialization. The courses for the specializations are drawn from across the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the School of Business. Only 1 course at the 100-level may be counted toward a specialization.

The major’s Core Requirements include: Ö INT 200: International Studies – Processes, Themes, and Issues Ö ECO 102: Principles of Macroeconomics Ö INT 498: Senior Seminar Ö 2 units of a World Language at the 200-level or above, relevant to the chosen specialization.

SPECIALIZATIONSAll International Studies majors need to choose a specialization for their major. If you do not have a specialization listed in PAWS, you need to fill out a Specialization Declaration Form. These are available outside the main office, SSB 219. Please fill out this form and submit it to Dr. Toloudis. If you have any questions about which specialization to choose, please set up a meeting with your advisor.
