FOREWORD

As the weather map is a recordof the elements of our weather, sothis book records the elements thatmake up Cranford High School.Variety, one of the chief charac-teristics of weather, is an impor-tant feature of our work and playat C. H. S., as charted on thesepages. Unlike the weather map,we cannot forecast the future, butwe know that the memories of ouryears at C. H. S. will be as mucha part of our lives as the sunand rain.

This year's Student Council functioned as an

active student government for over one thou-

sand C. H. S. students. The Council is com-

posed of elected homeroom representatives, one

representative from each of the four classes, the

seniors who are chairmen of the standing

committees (Assembly, Election, House and

Grounds, Point System, Publicity, Service, and

Student Relations), and the four officers.

Besides the regular duties performed by the

standing committees, the Council this year set

up an intra-mural bowling team and purchased

a school banner. Officers and several other

members attended the conference of the New

Jersey Association of High School Councils at

What's up, Bill?

Among the liveliest club meet-ings in C. H. S. are those of theschool dramatic club, the Maskand Bauble. Stage skills and tech-niques are demonstrated and prac-ticed by means of charades andsimilar games. Students auditionfor the club in September by per-forming original skits, the best ofwhich are given in the club's an-nual assembly. Initiations for newmembers are held at the Mask andBauble Ball, this year with a story-book theme A guest speaker onstage make-up, the traditionalChristmas dinner, and a theaterparty were also included in theclub's activities this year.

A record number of students participated in the various musical activitiesof C. H. S. this year. The seventy-voice choir, chosen by audition the pre-vious spring, presented the annual Christinas assembly, with an added eveningperformance this year for the townspeople. The members of the Girls' En-semble and Boys' Double Quartet, selected from the choir, entertained severalcommunity organizations. Each of the vocal groups—Choir, Freshman MixedChorus, Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs, and Ensemble and Double Quartet —sang in assembly at least once during the year, and all took part in the SpringConcert, traditionally the main musical production of the year.

A familiar feature of this year's football games and assemblies was themusic of the C. H. S. Band. In addition, band and orchestra members per-formed in the Christmas program and Spring Concert, and presented theirannual band concert in the spring.

Meetings of the Music Club included a number of special events, as wellas programs in which the members themselves—singers, dancers, and instru-mentalists—performed. The Christmas supper, a talent assembly sponsored bythe club, a theater party, and the final picnic were among this year's activities.

GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIONUnder the sponsorship of Mrs. Ivy Sullivan

and Miss Ruth McCartney the Girls' AthleticAssociation presents to every girl an oppor-tunity to participate in intramural sports andinterschool sports.

No sooner does the school bell ring in Sep-tember than the first activity, archer}-, begins. The girls improve their score with the learningand application of Lambert's eight points.Hockey also begins its short lived term out inthe brisk air. Later the girls retreat to a warm-er climate where the tumbling program com-mences.

Beginners' Modern Dance develops, and withthe perfection of the basic skills the girls ad-vance to Intermediate and Advanced ModernDance.

Basketball, one of the favorites, starts withthe formation of class teams. The girls playa "round robin' to decide the winning team,as well as playing other schools. Basketballbrings to life the Ref's Club, in which the pass-ing of a required examination enables the girls

to participate. Taking advantage of spring, theyconquer the fundamentals of Softball and formclass teams. The games are held after school.

By the time Softball is well on its way, ten-nis, a recent activity at Cranford High School, has attracted more and more girls.

The vear is climaxed with an Annual AwardsAssembly. Awards are based on the point par-ticipation of the student. The G. A. A. Councilconducts this system of point participationwhich enables the girls to earn their class nu-merals and the letter "C". This year the councilwill honor a senior girl for outstanding par-ticipation by placing her name on the G.A.A.plaque in the gym.

Cranford High School enjoyed one of the best grid seasons since the

capture of the 1952 State Championship Title for Group 3. Compiling a seven

and two record this year, the Cougars won first place in the Watchung Football

Conference. Teamwork again was the deciding factor for the Cranford football

team's success.

BASKETBALL

For the second year in succession, Cran-ford High School's basketball team gainedthe Watchung Conference Championship. The Cougar Cagers suffered a few in-juries during the season, but the teamappeared to play with greater determina-tion to make up for the handicap in in-juries. This determination plus smart ball-handling again proved the Cranford bas-ketball team champions.

The new track behind Cranford High School had very few cross countryveterans making its rounds. The comparatively new squad of runners, however, became more seasoned with each practice, and the team finished with a verycreditable record.

Interest in tennis has been revived at Cranford during the past few years.Part of the reason has been the two excellent courts behind the High Schoolbuilt in memory of Mr. Frank Massa.

The 1956 squad produced only a few "aces" but provided keen competitionfor its opponents.

Playing a sixteen-match schedule plus the county and state tournaments, the Cranford golf team was kept quite active during the 1956 season. Thehome matches were played at the Echo-Lake Golf Course, while the awaymatches were played at the neighboring country clubs and county courses.Although the team lacked experience at the start, it showed constant improve-ment as the season progressed.

The Scoreboard can be misleading; it's the playing that counts. TheCranford ballplayers during the 1956 season provided the action that makesany game an important game. Exciting plays and close scores were madepossible by the spirit of the Cranford team.
