The mining machinery industry has failed to develop an innovation ecosystem like seen in for example in the ICT and other manufacturing industries. Your comments.In current scenario, Indian mining industry is going through critical times. Most of the mining projects are held up for various reasons of clearances and scams. Market sentiments de�nitely re�ect in developmental and innovation of business. However, there are a lot of innovations to do in Indian mining machinery as we are mostly depending on foreign technology.

Could you discuss about the steps to be taken to accelerate the pace of mining machinery industry’s innovation ability?For any innovation to blossom, there should be abundant market opportunities which will be prime motivating factor for any business. There is a large demand for innovative mining machinery to cater the industry needs of high productivity, quality product output, environmental controlling, mechanisation of mines which are under PSU control etc.

To promote innovation ability, �rst of all, we have to come out from present impasse of government guidelines, and clarity should be provided to improve the business prospects of the mining industry.

Project promoters and mine owners and consultants should also come forward to explore innovative concepts rather than taking safe route of exploring conventional methods and machineries.

Mining machinery industry has also failed to attract better talent over the years. What is your take in this regard?Yes, the industry could not attract better talent is mainly because of uncertainty about the future of Indian mining industry

which bogged down with day-to-day sensational issues which created chaos in the project promoters’ mind whether to take o� project or not. Also, adverse impact of price �uctuations of imported ores followed by environmental, land accusations and local challenges is de�nitely created impact in the minds of the people in the industry.

What are the steps being taken by your company to counter above challenges?For Bevcon, innovation is lifeline, and we are very optimistic that current challenges are not long term; hence we keep working in developing new products as well as validating and improving operational e�ciency of

the product which are in operation. Being material handling company, we have alternate segments to explore our business prospects.

Brief us on your R&D and new product launch.On an average, we develop about 10-12 new products in a year. This year, we are seriously exploring innovative material handling equipment called “sandwich conveyor” to introduce to Indian coal mining industry which will be the breakthrough concept of conveying any mineral from pit bottom to the surface, eliminating use of conventional trucks. It also minimises the environmental degradation and brings down the operational cost drastically and enhances productivity and product quality. It is a unique concept ever tried in Indian mining industry.

We are also seriously exploring getting registered with DISR as an R&D hub. nRadial-Stacker-at-IMFA

The white topping procedure has been in news quiet frequently in

recent times. It is not surprising given the fact that roads in India are, more often than not, in need of repairs. The procedure o�ers multiple bene�ts to the problem of road rehabilitation, especially when it is a bituminous road and where it has been identi�ed that repeated overlays have little or unviable lasting e�ects.

White topping can be categorised into three main heads:• White topping (WT): Usually a

conventional overlay having a particular mix design for that speci�c project and usually about 200 mm thick

• Thin white topping (TWT): This is usually about 100-200 mm thick

• Ultra thin white topping (UTWT): It is sensitive and from 50 to 10 mm thick.

Several factors need to be taken into consideration before a particular type of

equipment is chosen for a white topping project. These include, mix design, grading of aggregates, water-cement ratio, additives, admixtures, size of the project, and calculated adversities, among others. It would be di�cult to prescribe a one quick-�x solution for all white topping requirements. This fact has been corroborated by numerous feedbacks and mentioned in the Guide to Concrete Overlays - National Pavement Technology Center, USA, September 2008. n
