PROVIDING INDEPENDENT, UNBIASED INFORMATION

This Level I Building Science Thermography course is for building investigators, energy rating assessors, new infrared camera users and practicing thermographers wanting focused training on commercial and residential building investigation using infrared as a primary investigative tool. The four day course discusses and explains how infrared thermography is used to monitor and diagnose the condition of buildings. COURSE OVERV IEW This Level I Building Science Thermography course focuses in depth on building diagnostics for solving problems related to heat, moisture, air flows and the troubleshooting needs of all types of buildings and structures. Participants who complete the training will be able to utilize thermal imaging equipment to perform qualitative surveys of building enclosures and will be able to fully incorporate thermographic inspections into existing programs.

The completion of this course will serve to provide the student with a clear understanding of thermal and building sciences and the use of infrared thermography for investigating heat flow, air flow and moisture within buildings. CERTIF ICATION & RECOGNIT ION Individuals completing the requirements for Level I Building Science Thermography are competent as Building Science Thermographers, qualified to perform building thermographic analysis and basic infrared thermography as relevant to an advanced Level I Thermographer. Certified Infrared Thermographer’s Association (CITA) CITA provides a secondary certification program to endorse your skills and training. Our program ensures that you meet the requirements set forth by the following Standards: SNT-TC-1A ISO 18436 FEES Course tuition includes: all course presentations, Student Reference Manual, trial version of Exception Data Management & Report Generation Software and the Infraspection Institute Certified Infrared Thermographer® exam. This course is fully catered.

thermally effective buildings = energy cost savings

Electromagnetic Energy; what is infrared and how does it compare to other electromagnetic energies.

Infrared Imaging Devices; specifications including; resolution, thermal sensitivity and limitations for use in building applications.

Thermal Imager Operation; level, span, range, focus and composition (distance) and the importance of thermal tuning.

Temperature Heat and Heat Thermodynamics; basic concepts regarding the differences of temperature and heat (energy).

Heat Transfer; heat transfer physics (radiation, conduction and convection) as they apply to buildings. Recognizing the components of the energy observed by the imager (radiation, reflection, transmission). Evaporation and thermal capacities as they are used to observe thermal patterning in buildings.

Apparent Temperature Thermal Image Interpretation; what does the camera see? Image interpretation, Stefan-Boltzmann Law, Lambert’s Cosine Law, Kirchhoff’s law, effects of surface emissivity on the image captured and temperatures calculated.

Building science: the study of heat, air and moisture flow, hygric buffer capacity and the three important damage functions for buildings.

Building Design/Construction Codes; Trace the

development of codes, illustrate the difference between a code and standard.

Building Design/Construction Environment; Identify climate and other site conditions that impact the building.

Building Design/Construction; Important considerations in construction, design interpretation, manufacturing guidelines and commissioning of the building. Review building plumbing and electrical as it pertains to thermography.

Building Enclosure/Envelope Barriers; Heat, Air, Moisture (bulk), Moisture (vapor) (HAMM). Various materials used for these barriers, their locations within the enclosure or envelope and characteristics from the standpoint of building science and using infrared thermography’s observations. Discussions include the use of additional tools such as, moisture meters, anemometers, hygrometers.

Building Enclosures (concrete, EIFS, Stucco, Wood, Vinyl, and Masonry); understanding the basics of these construction systems and interpreting thermograms and specific conditions that influence operations of these systems.

Roofing Exteriors; distinguish roof differences and basic roof construction. Examine the application of infrared thermography for locating wet insulation, including the patterns observed and conditions that influence observations.

Reporting; infrared software available, how to post process captured infrared images. (this section is provided during homework reviews) How to report infrared analysis findings with IR reporting software. Work with the programs installed on your computers.
