Passover is the most ancient of all rituals in the Westernworld. It has been passed down in an unbroken chain oftradition for over 3300 years, that’s over 100generations! That means that every one of yourancestors, without exception, sat at a Seder and sharedthe meaning, the mystery and magic of Passover.

Engage all your senses in this dynamic and movingexperience. The tastes, the aromas, the textures, thesounds and the sights of Jewish continuity in action allcombine to achieve the meaningful events of the Seder.

Take the time this year to fully engage yourself and yourfamily in Jewish life. Feel the passion of the exodus, taste the beauty of freedom, hear the message ofpersonal growth all brought to life at the Seder.

Join us or try it at home, either way, make this the mostmeaningful Pesach ever.

To find a Seder near you, anywhere on the globe contactus, we will be happy to assist.

Passover, the Festival of Freedom, iswhen we commemorate our ancestors’redemption from Egyptian slavery.

Also known as Chag Ha’Aviv, the Festival thatoccurs in spring, the connection betweenseason and festival is not merely an “accident”of the calendar, but must surely contain a vitaland relevant message for us, today.

Spring brings to the surface the forces whichwere hidden during winter. New shoots andcrops sprout from seeds that have rottedaway. This change is not a gradual transition, but an extraordinary change, bearing no re-lation to the previous stage. From decay into

growth, we observe a change that createsa new entity. This change is inevitable,

as the cycle of seasons were set intomotion by G-d, and have been so

since the time of creation.

At Passover, the season ofliberation, we are tasked

with this: In everyaspect of life,

whether physical or spiritual, we aim to trans-form and take all things out of their limitationsand "elevate" them to spirituality, to revealsomething alive and growing.

To be sure, there can be a "winter" of apparentunproductivity in a person’s life, when a longtime of fruitlessness has elapsed. There maybe very real obstacles and limitations, whetherphysical handicap or social circumstance thatwe cannot change. And yet, we know that thestate of spiritual winter can easily and sud-denly be changed into a season of growth.

This was true for the Jews in Egypt. For hun-dreds of years they suffered through theharshest of slaveries, and then in almost aninstant, they were freed. Within 49 days theywere at the foot of Mt. Sinai, receiving theTorah.

It is precisely in the season that nature as-serts itself as an unchangeable force, that wecelebrate Passover, when we were liberatedin a mot supernatural way. Even somethingas immutable as the calendar’s march of timecan be elevated to a higher purpose: we useit to observe Passover in the spring months.

It can come in a moment. We can reveal theblossoms of spring, which lay dormant throughthe tough winter months. We can bring to lightour inner strengths and talents, and liberateourselves from our personal slaveries.

May G-d help every Jew to make full use ofthe powers which He has given them toovercome all difficulties and hindrances—toachieve a personal exodus and attain truefreedom, by attaching to G-d through Torahand mitzvot. KA MessageExperience Passover q3

Passover is a holiday thatmandates our complete

involvement, not just during its eightdays but for weeks before. Asidefrom the regular holiday obligations,we are also commanded: No leavenshall be eaten... For seven days youshall eat unleavened bread...and noleaven shall be seen of yours [in yourpossession] (Exodus 13:3-7).

We accomplish this by cleaning our homeswell and inspecting them before Passover, and gradually eliminating Chametz fromevery room and crevice. This intensive clean-ing takes place in Jewish homes throughoutthe world. The following will help you tacklethe process in your own home.

Passover ShoppingAny processed food you eat onPassover (and year-round)needs kosher supervision.Today, that’s no big deal—thesupermarkets are filled with“Kosher for Passover” products.Fruits, vegetables and mostthings raw and unprocessed are kosher forPassover. (Ask your rabbi about beans andlegumes).

One way to do this is to go healthy for eightdays and cook everything from scratch. Fora complete guide to making your house

kosher for Passover, along with a store-house of knockout recipes, get your

hands on The Spice and Spirit ofKosher for Passover Cooking (LWO,2003), available at most Jewish book-stores. For good links to Passoverfoods, check out www.passover.net.You can also contact us with anyquestions you may have.

days of Passover, we sell ourChametz to a non-Jew. This is a legallybinding sale in both Jewish and civil law,and we let the experts handle it. Fill out theenclosed form called “Mechirat Chametz(Sale of Chametz),” a legal document thatauthorizes your rabbi to transfer the own-ership of your Chametz for the duration ofPassover. He will buy it back for you afterthe holiday is over. The form can also becompleted online.

The Search for ChametzOn the night before Passover begins, weperform a formal search of the house forChametz. We tightly roll ten pieces ofChametz into paper wrappings and hidethem around the house (make sure youkeep a list). Traditionally, a candle is usedto light the way, and a spoon (as a shovel),a feather (as a broom) and a paper bag (asa paper bag) are used to collect anyChametz found.

Egypt, he spared the Jewish firstborns. Incommemoration and thanks, firstborn sonsfast on the day Passover begins (this year4/6). It is said that “joy breaks all bound-aries.” Since the joy of a mitzvah—such asthe completion of studying a Talmudictractate— transcends the obligation to fast, many firstborn sons break their fast earlywith a seudat mitzvah (mitzvah meal ofjoy), by completing the study of a tractateon this day.

The Burning of Chametz All Chametz found during the formalsearch is burned in the morning. Chametzconsumption should be concluded as well, bringing your interaction with Chametzdown to nil. The sale of Chametz also goesinto effect at this time. (Check page 11 forcorrect times.) Once the Chametz hasburned, we recite the “Kol Chamirah” todisown any Chametz that has been over-looked:

Jewish families come together to recon-struct that original Passover Seder, againand again, year after year. And every year, there is more to learn.

Join us or try it at home, either way, makethis the most memorable and meaningfulPesach ever.

The HaggadahYour Friendly GuideThe Seder is a time to retell the story of theExodus and the history of our nation’sbirth, but also much more. The obser-vances at the Seder table allow one toactually re-experience a modern dayExodus; facilitating one’s own spiritual re-birth and empowering each man, womanand child with a renewed sense of innerfreedom and spiritual resolve.

The Passover Haggadah, which recordsthe Seder’s narrative, says that in each generation man must see himself as if hehad personally gone out of Egypt. Judaismteaches that Egypt and the nefariousPharaoh symbolize the negative forces thatconstrict man. The slavery in Egypt repre-sents the emotional and psychologicalshackles that confine and enslave thehuman spirit, constraining one’s ability tolive up to his or her fullest spiritual poten-tial. If there was ever a paradox it is this:that on Passover eve, the night that free-dom was born, we experience freedom byfollowing a sequence of fifteen defined andordered steps. We call it the Seder or“Order.”

As you relive slavery and liberation, theHaggadah will tell you exactly where you

Millennia before the Wii, an ancient deserttribe of mystics enacted the first multimediaeducational experience. Beyond anything wehave today, it reached deep into the humanpsyche in every way possible and all at once:Rich audio, dynamic visuals, spoken languageand written text, even the visceral senses oftaste, smell and touch.

It was intergenerational — involving all thefamily with something special for each one.It was customizable, adjustable to a spectrumof personalities. It was interactive, with role-playing and creative manipulation of materials. It was a whole-person experience, developing a sense of inner freedom withinall who participated.

But its most fascinating aspect was that everydetail was firmly grounded in the mysticalteachings of an esoteric tradition. Each stephad not just a body, but a soul as well — a simple meaning as well as a deep lesson towards higher consciousness.

Its success has been awe-inspiring. No ritualhas survived so long and so true to its originalform. No lesson has affected humankind withsuch impact, propagating the values ofhuman dignity, liberty and the search forhigher meaning to every society it hasreached.

To this day, in every corner of the world,

The Three MatzotThe Bread of Faith. Our ancestors displayed thedeepest levels of faith when they followed G-d intothe desert with such haste that there wasn’t eventime for the bread they had baked to rise. The threematzot represent the entire Jewish people — thepriests, the tribe of Levi, and the rest of Israel. Inkeeping with the mystical tradition, “Shmurah Matzah”is used. Shmurah Matzah is made of flour that hasbeen carefully isolated from any contact with water, from harvest through grinding and kneading, at con-

Elements of the Seder

The Seder PlateZEROAH (Shankbone): The PaschalLamb is represented by the Zeroah. Mys-tical tradition replaces the shank bonewith a roasted chicken neck that is noteaten, as a reminder that although weapproach freedom during the Seder, ourultimate freedom is soon to come withthe Final Redemption.

BEITZAH (Egg): The egg symbolizesthe Festival Offering made on Passoverin the ancient Holy Temple.

MAROR (Bitter Herbs/ Horseradish):The bitterness of suffering in Egypt isbrought to the table with maror.

KARPAS (Vegetable): Egypt crushedour ancestors’ spirits with senseless,back-breaking drudgery. A vegetable, usually an onion, potato or parsley isdipped in saltwater and eaten so we maytaste their tears of anguish.

CHAROSET (Mixture of Fruits andNuts): As slaves we used mortar—sym-bolized by Charoset—to make bricks thatformed structures which we erected.

CHAZERET (Romaine Lettuce): Theinitial stages of exile were pleasant, yetsoon the injustices of slavery becameoverwhelming. So too, the first taste ofchazeret is mild, but soon the taste of itsbitter root becomes dominant.

trolled facilities, making it verykosher for Passover.

The Four Cups of WineThe cups represent four stages toward freedom: “Iwill release you… I will save you… I will liberate you…I will take you unto me as a nation” (Exodus 6:6-7).

First Cup—physical removal from the land ofEgypt (“I will release you”);

Second Cup—liberation from intellectual andspiritual slavery (“I will save you”);

Third Cup—creation of a people forever immuneto permanent slavery (“I will liberate you”);

Fourth Cup—G-d’s acceptance of Israel as Hischosen people and the granting of the Torah atSinai (“I will take you unto me as a nation”).

Also, the Children of Israel had four great meritseven while in exile: (1) They did not change theirHebrew names; (2) they continued to speak theirown language, Hebrew; (3) they remained highlymoral; (4) they remained loyal to one another.

A fifth cup of wine, a special Cup of Elijah, isfilled after the Seder’s blessing Grace After Meal. The soul of the spiritually immortal Elijah theProphet visits every Jewish home on Seder night, and this one’s symbolically for him.

When drinking the four cups andeating the matzah, we lean on ourleft side to accentuate the fact thatwe are free people. In ancient timesonly free people had the luxury ofreclining while eating.

1. KADESH—the Benediction

The Seder service begins withthe recitation of Kiddush, proclaiming theholiness of the holiday. This is done over acup of wine, the first of the four cups wewill drink at the Seder.

2. URCHATZ—Purification

We wash our hands in the usual, ritually prescribed manner as is done beforea meal, but without the customary blessing.

The next step in the Seder, Karpas, requiresdipping food into water, which in turnmandates, according to Jewish law, thateither the food be eaten with a utensil orthat one’s hands be purified by washing. Onthe Seder eve we choose the less commonobservance to arouse the child’s curiosity.

3. KARPAS—the “Appetizer”

A small piece of onion or boiledpotato is dipped into saltwater and eaten(after reciting the blessing over vegetables).Dipping the Karpas in saltwater is an act ofpleasure and freedom, which furtherarouses the child’s curiosity.

4. YACHATZ—Breaking the Matzah

The middle matzah on the Sederplate is broken in two. The larger part is putaside for later use as the afikoman. Thisunusual action not only attracts the child’sattention once again, but also recalls G d’ssplitting of the Sea of Reeds to allow theChildren of Israel to cross on dry land. Thesmaller part of the middle matzah isreturned to the Seder plate. This brokenmiddle matzah symbolizes humility, andwill be eaten later as the “bread of poverty.”

5. MAGGID—The Haggadah

At this point, the poor areinvited to join the Seder. The Seder tray ismoved aside, a second cup of wine ispoured, and the child, who by now isbursting with curiosity, asks the time-honored question: “Mah nishtanah ha-lailahhazeh mikol ha-leilot? Why is this nightdifferent from all other nights?” Why thedipping? Why only matzah? Why the bitterherbs? Why are we relaxing and leaning oncushions as if we were kings?

The child’s questioning triggers one of themost significant Mitzvot of Passover, whichis the highlight of the Seder ceremony: thehaggadah, telling the story of the Exodusfrom Egypt. The answer includes a briefreview of history, a description of thesuffering imposed upon the Israelites, alisting of the plagues visited on theEgyptians, and an enumeration of themiracles performed by the Almighty for theredemption of His people.

6. ROCHTZAH—Washing Before the Meal

After concluding the first part ofthe haggadah by drinking the second cup ofwine, the hands are washed again, this timewith the customary blessings, as is usuallydone before eating bread.

7 & 8. MOTZIMATZAH—We Eat the Matzah

Taking hold of the three matzot(with the broken one between the twowhole ones), recite the customary blessingbefore bread. Then, letting the bottommatzah drop back onto the plate, andholding the top whole matzah with thebroken middle one, recite the specialblessing “al achilat matzah”. Then break atleast one ounce from each matzah and eatthe two pieces together, while reclining.

9. MAROR—the Bitter Herbs

Take at least one ounce of thebitter herbs. Dip it in the Charoset, thenshake the latter off and make the blessing “alachilat maror.” Eat without reclining.

10. KORECH—the Sandwich

In keeping with the custominstituted by Hillel, the great Talmudic sage,a sandwich of matzah and maror is eaten.Break off two pieces of the bottom matzah, which together should be at least one ounce.Again, take at least one ounce of bitter herbsand dip them in the Charoset. Place thisbetween the two pieces of matzah, say “keinasah Hillel . . .” and eat the sandwich whilereclining.

11. SHULCHANORECH—the Feast

The holiday meal is nowserved. We begin the meal with a hard-boiled egg dipped into saltwater.

12. TZAFUN—Out of Hiding

After the meal, the half-matzahwhich had been “hidden,” set aside for theafikoman (“dessert”), is taken out and eaten. It symbolizes the Paschal lamb, which waseaten at the end of the meal.

Everyone should eat at least 1½ ounces ofmatzah, reclining, before midnight. Aftereating the afikoman, we do not eat or drinkanything except for the two remaining cupsof wine.

13. BERACH—Blessings After the MealA third cup of wine is filled and

Grace is recited. After the Gracewe recite the blessing over wine and drinkthe third cup.

We now fill the cup of Elijah and our owncups with wine. We open the door andrecite the passage which is an invitation tothe Prophet Elijah, the harbinger of thecoming of Moshiach, our righteous Messiah.

14. HALLEL—Songs of PraiseAt this point, having recognized

the Almighty and His uniqueguidance of the Jewish people, we go stillfurther and sing His praises as L-rd of theentire universe.

After reciting the Hallel, we again recite theblessing over wine and drink the fourth cup, reclining.

15. NIRTZAH—AcceptanceHaving carried out the Sederservice properly, we are surethat it has been well received by

the Almighty. We then say“Leshanah haba’ah bee-rushalayim—Nextyear in Jerusalem.”

Passover & BeyondExperience Passover

The Counting of the Omer

On the second night of Passover we beginthe counting of the Omer, named for the

Omer offering of new crops, brought in theTemple on the second day of Passover. Wecount 49 days in anticipation from Passoveruntil Shavuot, when we received the Torah atMount Sinai. During the Omer count, we workto grow ourselves and prepare for this monu-mental event. A person has 49 combinedemotional and spiritual traits, and each day ofthe Omer is a propitious time to work on a par-ticular aspect, until our soul is fully primed toreceive G-dliness on the 50th day, Shavuot.

The Intermediate Days of Passover

In between the first two and last two holydays of Passover, except for Shabbat, go

ahead and function relatively normally. Theonly exception is, like your mother keepstelling you, you shouldn’t work so hard. Keepyour spirits up: it’s a custom to drink a glass ofwine every day of Passover.

The Final Days of Passover

The seventh day of Passover is the daywhen over 3,300 years ago, the sea split,

and the Jewish people were officially free.Experience your own spiritual wakeup calltonight, by staying up until dawn, studyingworks of Divine wisdom—the Torah. Withoutour forebears, we not only wouldn’t havePassover, we wouldn’t be here. That’s why weremember our departed parents on eighth andfinal day of Passover, with the special Yizkormemorial service during the morning services.

The eighth day of Passover emphasizes aneven higher freedom, and is dedicated to ourimminent and final Redemption. As the daydraws to a close, the world experiences an out-pouring of Divine conscious ness.

PassoverBeyond&

Following the custom of the Baal ShemTov, founder of Chassidism, Passover con-cludes with a “Feast of Moshiach.” Thisfestive meal, complete with matzah and, yes, four cups of wine, begins before sun-set. It is the perfect way to spiritually takeleave of Passover and open our conscious-ness to the coming redemption.

Nightfall marks the end of Passover. Waitabout an hour to give the rabbi time to buyback your Chametz, and then you can eatChametz to your heart’s content.

A Second Passover

On the 14th day of the Jewish month ofIyar (this year 5/6) a “Second

Passover” is observed simply by eating apiece of matzah. When the Jews fledEgypt, some of them were unable to partic-ipate in the Paschal offering because theywere ritually impure. So they prayed toG-d for a second chance to bring the offer-ing. G-d agreed, allowing them to enjoy a“Second Passover” on this date, one monthlater.

Party of Thirty-Three

Lag B’Omer (day 33 of the Omer count, this year 5/10), is known for barbe-

cues, bonfires and public gatherings ofunity. We celebrate the passing of RabbiShimon bar Yochai, the author of theZohar, one of the fundamental books ofJewish mysticism. He requested that hisdeath be a celebration of life and we com-ply with zest. This is also the day whenRabbi Akiva’s students pledged to banishpride and value each other. 24,000 of hisstudents had died in a plague before theyunderstood that they could only survive byrespecting each other.

Still Counting? Forty-nine days after Passover, we reachShavuot, (this year 5/27) the day when G-dgives us the Torah.
