cratic leaders in Congress enacted solutions to create jobs dur-ing the economic collapse.

• Millions of Jobs Created.Obama’s economic recovery plan hascreated 3.6 million jobs so far.

• Saving American Industry.Obama’s rescue of U.S. automakerswas a success.

RELIEF FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS• Tax Cuts for Working Families.Obama provided tax cuts to

95 percent of working families and extended the payroll tax cut,putting an extra $1,000 in the average working family’s pocket.

• Proposed the Buffett Rule.Obama is asking millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share.

• Unemployment Insurance When It’s Needed.He extended unem-ployment insurance, assisting 2.5 million Americans who lost theirjobs in the economic downturn.

PROTECTING WORKERS’ RIGHTS• Opposed the War on Workers. The president called efforts to

curb collective bargaining rights in states an “assault on unions.” • Level Playing Field.Obama named experienced worker advo-

cates to the National Labor Relations Board and the National Mediation Board.

• New Sheriff in Town. The president named Hilda Solis, the daughter of a Teamster shop steward, as Secretary of Labor.

HOLDING WALL STREET ACCOUNTABLE• Reining in Corporate Greed.Obama enacted a sweeping financial

reform package.• Protecting Consumers. The president established the Consumer

Financial Protection Bureau, which increases oversight overbanks and mortgage companies.

RETIREMENT SECURITY• Protecting Social Security.Obama vowed to protect Social

Security and refused to increase the Medicare eligibility age.

EXPANDING HEALTH CARE COVERAGE• Quality Coverage. The law prevents people with pre-existing

conditions from being denied insurance coverage and prohibits insurance companies from dropping people due to illness.

• Young Adults and Children. Parents can keep children on theirhealth plans until age 26. Obama gave 11 million children coverageunder the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

TEA PARTY LEADERSHIP

KILLING JOBS• Firing Teachers. The Tea Party opposed legislation to preserve

more than 160,000 education jobs, arguing that too many teachershad been hired, and they should be downsized.

• Unemployed? Too bad. Tea Partiers fought against extending unemployment benefits. Sen. Rand Paul called them “handouts.”

IRRESPONSIBLE BUDGET CUTS• Slash and Burn. The Tea Party believes that Republicans did not

go far enough in slashing funding for important social and educationprograms, and introduced their own set of irresponsible budget cuts.

• Eliminating the Education Department. Rep. Michele Bachmann proposed cutting $400 billion from the budget, including eliminatingthe U.S. Education Department.

• Who Needs Affordable Housing? Sen. Rand Paul called for evenmore extreme cuts—$500 billion worth—that would eliminate theAffordable Housing Program.

ATTACK ON WORKERS• Denying Workers Their Rights. Tea Party Sen. Mike Lee calls child

labor laws unconstitutional.• Bought and Paid For. The Tea Party gets funding from the anti-worker,

anti-union Koch brothers who are leading the attempt to destroyunions and the middle class.

GUTTING CONSUMER PROTECTIONS• Leading Fight to Repeal Consumer Protections. Tea Party Leader Rep.

Michele Bachmann is leading the fight to repeal Wall Street reforms.• Accountability Measures Called a ‘Political Sham.’ Rep. Allen

West called the effort to rein in Wall Street a “political sham.” • Compassionate? Rep. Nan Hayworth said efforts to gut Wall Street

reform are “entirely practical. It is compassionate.”

THREAT TO SENIORS• Eliminating Social Security. The Tea Party supports privatizing,

and even eliminating, Social Security benefits.• Fraud? Rep. Michele Bachmann, who supports investing Social

Security taxes in the risky stock market, called the program “a tremendous fraud.”

HEALTH CARE IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT• Blocking Access. The Tea Party ardently opposes the health care

reform law and all voted in favor of repeal in the House.• Socialism? Tea Party Leader Michele Bachmann called the

reform law the “crown jewel of socialism,” and said it was her“motivation in life” to make sure it is repealed.

TAX BREAKS FOR BILLIONAIRES• Opposed Job Creation, Tax Relief. Republican leadership opposed

the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which saved jobsand gave the middle class tax relief.

• Tax Breaks for Shipping Jobs Overseas. Republican leaders fought to protect tax breaks for corporations that ship Americanjobs overseas.

GUTTING THE MIDDLE CLASS• Education, Child Care Funding.Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget would cut

Pell Grant funding in half , cut more than $1 billion from Head Startand $39 million from child care, affecting more than 360,000 children.

• Fewer Job Training Programs. Speaker John Boehner attemptedto cut $2 billion in funding for job training programs.

WAGING WAR ON WORKERS• Targeting Labor.GOP supports attacks being waged on workers

across the country.• Right to Work. Republican leaders support a national right-to-

work bill.• Corporations are People. Republican leaders believe corporations

are people and should have more influence on our elections, yetunion members should have less.

PROTECTING BIG BUSINESS• Opposed Accountability Safeguards.GOP leaders opposed the

financial reform bill and immediately called for its repeal.• Weakened Consumer Protections. Republicans are trying to chip

away at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.• Wall Street Influence.Wall Street interests infused GOP leaders’

campaign coffers with cash. In the last election, Boehner and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell received more than $6 millionfrom Wall Street firms.

PUTTING SENIORS AT RISK• Privatizing Social Security.GOP leadership supports privatizing

Social Security.• Slashing Benefits. Republicans tried to reduce retirement bene-

fits, even proposing to increase the eligibility age to 70.

PROTECTING INSURANCE COMPANIES• Ending Medicare and Medicaid. Rep. Ryan’s budget proposal

would end Medicare and Medicaid as we know it.
