Refrigerators with built-in camerasIf you’ve ever asked yourself whether you have any eggs or milk left, don’t walk to the refrigerator to find out. Check your phone instead. Companies like Samsung and LG have created smart refrigerators equipped with cameras inside so you can remotely view the contents of your fridge. This is extremely convenient when you’re at the grocery store and need to know if you should buy orange juice.

Refrigerators with transparent doorsLG has spent many years perfecting the smart fridge, so it was no surprise when the company introduced the InstaView refrigerator in 2016. Economical and environmentally friendly, it features French doors with a tinted panel that becomes transparent when you knock on it twice. This allows people to see what’s inside their fridge without having to open it and waste all that cool air.

Smart backsplashesIf you like checking the weather report or the news while you’re pouring yourself a bowl of cereal, then an LCD backsplash may be for you. A series of mirrored panels can be installed on the backsplash and display anything from sports games to websites to soothing images of the ocean. Whirlpool has even developed a touchscreen backsplash above the stove that displays your calendar, your to-do list, recipes, and even a baby monitor.

Smart stovesAt the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, Whirlpool introduced its Smart Front Control Range, which promises to make meal planning a breeze. It pairs with the Yummly app so you can pick a recipe and the

appliance will take you through every step of the process, from when to preheat to when to turn off the stove so your meal will be ready by a specific time. You can even control the appliance by syncing it with a voice-enabled assistant like Amazon Alexa.

Smart frying pansIt’s not just appliances getting the science fiction treatment. Kitchenware can also come with futuristic functions as well. For example, the Pantelligent smart pan contains heat sensors at the base to let you know when the time is right to put your chicken breast on the pan, when to flip it, and when it’s cooked. The handle stores the Bluetooth so you can connect to the Pantelligent app, select a recipe, and be guided through the entire cooking process.

Connected coffee makersGourmia is a Brooklyn-based manufacturer of innovative kitchen appliances. The latest in its arsenal is the Smart Coffee Maker that can be controlled with the Gourmia mobile app. From the comfort of your bed, you can command the machine to grind the beans, bring the water to the right temperature, and brew the coffee the way you want—all before you even get out of bed.

Intelligent convection ovensIf you’re a set-it-and-forget-it type of cook, the June Intelligent Oven is probably the kitchen appliance you never knew you wanted. This countertop convection oven has a built-in camera that can visually detect certain foods once they’re placed inside, and then it automatically cooks it to perfection. You can even connect to the live stream and keep an eye on your meal as it’s being cooked.

1. Incorporate high-end materials

Marble, polished brash, and gold and silver metallics add an extravagant touch to any room, whether you go big with a marble kitchen countertop or subtle with a gold picture frame.

2. Hang large-scale artwork

An oversized piece of art instantly adds wow factor. It ties a room together and gives your home a chic focal point that will surely impress your guests. Plus, you don’t necessarily have to fork out the big bucks for a gorgeous piece. Look for prints, paintings, and photography at online art resources like Etsy and Great Big Canvas.

3. Dim the lights

Equip your light switches with dimmers so you can set the mood for every occasion. A dimmer can instantly make a room look more inviting and cozy. Even ambient lighting like sconces, candles, and decorative lamps create a romantic feel.

4. Get floor-to-ceiling curtains

What’s one thing that makes a hotel feel luxurious? Tailored window coverings that go from floor to ceiling. This creates the illusion of high ceilings and if you opt for a high-quality fabric such as suede, velvet, or tapestry, it will add an extra layer of luxe. Make sure the fabric is not too heavy or it will be difficult to draw, or too light that it won’t fall well.

5. Hang up glitzy mirrors

Large mirrors instantly add glamour to any home. It also creates the illusion of a brighter, larger space. Mirrors can be placed on the back of bookshelves, closet doors, above the fireplace, or just about anywhere else in the home. For extra opulence, consider floor-length mirrors or ones with ornate frames.

6. Throw in some faux fur

You don’t need to buy real fur to make your home feel expensive. Just the look of it will do the trick. Drape faux fur blankets and throws over the bed, the couch, or the rug for a posh look.

7. Focus on the entryway

The entryway of your home is the first thing that guests see—and first impressions are very important. Pay attention to what’s in this space and decorate it with a focal item such as a vase of exotic flowers, a glass bowl, a gilded mirror, or a marble console table. Having a comfortable chair where guests can sit to remove their shoes adds a high-end touch as well.

8. Update the light fixtures

Interior lighting can get outdated pretty quickly, so replace them with something new and trendy. Consider pendant lighting, vintage Edison-style bulbs, and soft gold fixtures. When in doubt, a classic chandelier always makes for a luxurious staple.

9. Add a sculptural item

Nothing says extravagance like a one-of-a-kind sculptural centrepiece. Whether it is a unique silhouette, an ancient relic, an imported piece of furniture, or even that clay sculpture you created yourself, these art forms add an element of the unexpected to your entire space.

10. Add flowers and greenery

What’s never missing from the fancy homes featured in Architectural Digest? Flowers and plants. Bring nature into your home and add life to your decor with lush bouquets, bright orchids, and tall green plants. If you prefer something more long lasting than floral arrangements, you can make an impact with tabletop water fountains, bowls filled with stones and pebbles, or nature-themed artwork.
