No matter what kind of tunes you’re into, Scotland’s vibrant and eclectic music scene can cater to your tastes. From traditional folk music to contemporary electronic, there’s a diverse range of sounds in every city and town.

Although Glasgow and Edinburgh offer the biggest choice, Scotland’s many islands are a haven for music. Dotted with cosy local pubs and full of inspiring scenery, talented musicians are easy to comeby in this part of the world; and they won’t hesitate to treat you to a live performance. Orkney:Traditional music enthusiasts should put a trip to Orkney at the top of their Scottish bucket list. An island with a proud folk tradition, music is way of life for many of the residents here. In May the Orkney Folk Festival celebrates all things trad, and the centre of the action is the Ferry Inn. And if you get your fill of fiddles (impossible!), there are plenty of stunning walking trails to explore.

Isle of Skye:

The Isle of Skye is a highlight on any Scottish trip not least for its breathtaking scenery and adventurous hiking trails. But there are also some excellent venues to experience traditional Ceilish music. For a start, try:

Outer Hebrides:

If you’re heading to Scotland in July, you should definitely make your way to the Outer Hebrides for the Hebridean Celtic Festival. Get away from it all and listen to some of the top Celtic performers in the country do their thing in the stunning setting of Lewis Castle, overlooking Stornoway Harbour. There’s also secluded beaches, awe-inspiring views and delicious seafood to enjoy while you’re at it.

Glasgow:

With over 130 live music events taking place each week in Glasgow, there really is something for everyone. It is an UNESCO City of Music, after all! With some of the best live venues in the UK there is no better place to catch a gig, and the Celtic Connections Festival is a top choice for trad music. An annual celebration of Celtic music, it also fuses sounds from all around the world for an unforgettable multicultural show. The perfect place to kick off your Scotland tour!

Edinburgh:

Glasgow may have the official ‘city of music’ title, but Edinburgh’s music scene is not to be sniffed at either. Whether you’re into folk, rock or classical, this city is full of breathtaking venues and talented acts. One unmissable event is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Held every August, it features performers from 48 countries and a TV audience of over 100 million. The world renowned Edinburgh Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival, takes place in August too, where you can hear anything from opera to rap to jazz-tastic musicals.
