What are LEDs and how can they help me save?Light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs are a long-lasting, energy-efficient alternative to incandescent light bulbs.

Compared to incandescents, LED bulbs:

• Use up to 90 percent less energy

• Last up to 25 times longer

• Save up to $80 over each bulb’s life

• Waste less heat and stay cooler to the touch

Look for lumensTo find the LED bulb with the right amount of light, look for lumens on the package. The higher the number, the brighter the light. Then find the bulb with the lowest energy use (watts).

Choose the right bulbFor the best light output, use omnidirectional bulbs in lamps where the light shines in multiple directions. Use reflectors in fixtures where you want more direct light.

Did you know there are 30-40 sockets in the average home? The more incandescent bulbs you replace, the more you save. Start with the bulbs in your five highest use fixtures in the kitchen, living room, bedrooms and bathrooms.

Check the factsClear labels on every LED bulb tell you more about the bulb’s brightness and estimated energy usage.

If you're replacing your CFLs with LED bulbs,

retailers. Find a location at pplelectric.com/cfl.

Choose the bulb based on how bright you need it to be, measured in lumens.

Determine which bulb has the lowest estimated energy costs per year.

Choose other features, such as light appearance (color) and lifetime.

Pick your color

Let your home shine by choosing the “light appearance,” or color, of the LED you select. This is measured in Kelvin (K) and ranges from 2700K, or “warm,” to 6500K, or “daylight.” Warm light appears more yellow, while daylight appears more blue and crisp.
