Located where Jefferson and Orleans Parish borders meet, the West Carrollton Center will serve both parishes as an oasisfor health-conscious food and sustainability in a rapidly developing neighborhood. 988 Jefferson Highway will host threecommercial tenant spaces, new pedestrian and biking infrastructure, parking, and green space. The interior layout isflexible, with the goal of collaboration among invested parties to create a truly custom space suited to each tenant’sneeds. This project seeks to meet a growing need for accessible and healthy food options in an area that currently offers alimited menu of primarily fast food restaurants. With sustainability as the driving force of the design, the WCC exhibitsseveral long-term strategies to minimize the building’s environmental footprint. As the first project to implement the Parish’srecently adopted Low Impact Development Guidelines, and will be a model for stormwater management and greeninfrastructure in Jefferson Parish. The building design is surrounded by a diverse landscape of water-loving plants,permeable surfaces, and underground retention basins to mitigate flooding. This wetland landscaping creates a naturalboundary around a covered gallery that wraps the building and offers a protected and beautiful outdoor dining experience.Low-E Glazing will allow natural light into the building while limiting undesirable solar heat gain. On-site bike parking andnew sidewalks promote pedestrian urban design on an otherwise car-centric street.
