Auctioneer: Rachel Capstick: An absolutely cracking entry of calves for the first

sale of the year. A packed ringside of buyers from Norfolk to Aberdeen and

everywhere in between ensured a super trade all sale. Blues again dominated the

    numbers, 42 bulls topped at £502 then the next 15 prices £480 x4, £475, £470 x2,

    £460, £452, £450, £445, £435, £432 & £410 – the rest either side of £400.

    37 heifers topped at £435, then the next 15 prices £430, £425 x5, £400, £392 x 2,

    £385, £380, £372, £370 x 2 & £368. We expect another good entry next week, until

the Christmas backlog is cleared. No where else in the country could provide such a

fantastic entry of TB4 quality calves.

The rest of the breeds, Simmentals, Limousins, A Angus and Herefords sold equally

well today, in particular for heifers going north of the border.

Just shy of 100 stirks turned up and again there was a very good trade, especially for

continentals and a nice run of Angus from The Taylor Farming Partnership, who also

have their 2 ½ year old Angus Stock Bull for sale this Saturday.

Next stirk sale is Thursday 18th January. Please pre enter by Tuesday 16th January

to 01200 441351 for advertising and ballot. We need more suckler bred types for

this sale to fulfil buyers demand. Thanks

Auctioneer Rachel Capstick: Cast Sheep did not match Thursday’s trade this morning. The hoggs were a nice trade for smarter and well fleshed goods – plenty over the £2/Kilo. A higher proportion of lighter weights and half meat pulled the overall average back. Store hoggs followed and these sold very well in comparison to a high of £72.50 and just shy of a £60 average. The highlight of the day however was the dispersal sale of in lamb Dorset Horn Ewes for Carol & Mick Crawshaw, Trawden. Ewes scanned with twins due 10th March onwards sold to £152 and Shearlings scanned at 150% sold to £180. NEXT WEEK, we have several batches of in lamb sheep entered to follow the prime sale including the annual sale of Texel & Beltex females.

Further entries to the office 01200 441351 by Tuesday lunch time please.

    Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon:

Top class heifers from Colin Singleton and Booth Bros topped the sale at £2,320 and

most heifers giving 30 litres were either side of £2000. James Rogerson took first

prize in the cow class selling to £1950.

In the commercial section Robert Bargh took the first prize selling at £2050 followed

by Paul Rowland at £1980. There was plenty of choice with a good mix of dispersal

cows and quality commercial heifers. In-calf heifers made to £1350 for J D Graves,

Carlisle and a pen of heifer calves made to £350 for Maurice Jackson. All of our calf

vendors are BVD tag testing and this has made a huge difference to our heifer calf

    trade.

NEXT WEEK we expect 25-30 new calved as quite a few struggled with the weather

    today.

Today we have had dairies from Preston-Blackpool-Kendal-Carnforth-York-Halifax

and most places inbetween. IF YOU HAVE ANY DAIRIES TO SELL WE ARE HERE

Blues were on fire today. Alan Bowker, Cowling topped the market with a trio of bulls

at £565 each closely followed by Paul and John Cowgill, Newsholme at £555 and

  • £505, who also sold the top priced Blue heifers, a trio at £415 each closely followed

by another trio from Alan Bowker at £402.

Outwith the Blues, the rest of the Continental were also hard fought for, as were the

    Angus and Herefords.

The black and white bulls were a much sharper trade today topping at £238 for a

blocky six week old calf from Pauline Anderton. A batch from Harry Raw sold

between £160-£198, plenty of others either side of £150 and an overall average of

    £100 for all quality.

The bad weather affected the stirk numbers today but, even so we had 91 forward

from suckler bred goods to dairy cross Continentals, to the usual selection of black

and white bulls and steers. A bit of something for everyone. We welcomed some

new vendors today to our handy fortnightly sale and exceeded their expectations!

NEXT STIRK SALE is on 1st February, please ring the office 01200 441351 by

Tuesday 30th January with entries for advertising and the ballot. Thank you.

Prime/ Store/ Breeding Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick: Cast ewes generally better to sell than last week for the goods on offer. The hogs today were a good trade for anything well fleshed – plenty of pens in the 220-249ppk range. Nice to welcome some new vendors from further afield to our handy Saturday market and a very pleasing SQQ average of 188ppk. Store lambs next to £71 and an overall average of £53 for all quality. A quick run up to the top ring to sell the MV Texel sheep which sold very well indeed. Harry Barrow’s journey down the M6 proved worthwhile, a total clearance and topping at £290 followed by Keith Parker at £270. Back down to the bottom ring for commercial sheep. David Williams from North Wales brought the first sheep and lambs of the season, Lleyn ewes with singles at £140 and £135. Best of the in-lamb were from Mark Worthington at £118 and £108. Howard Walsh had a nice trade with Jacobs scanned with twins at £92. The rest of the in-lamb sheep would look value for money – a good crowd of people but the weather isn’t helping things. Thanks to all for your patience and understanding while the top yard is out of commission. NEXT SATURDAY 9.30am Cull sheep, prime hogs followed by stores. Keep looking at the adverts in the press and website for special sales and dispersals as they are booked in. If you would like to discuss your own flock reductions or requirements give us a call on 01200 441351.

    Auctioneer: Rachel Capstick.

A busier sale than anticipated today with 173 calves forward with a much larger

proportion of sweet young calves than some weeks.

Blue bulls were in demand again. The top 16 prices: £448, £442, £425, £420, £418,

    £415, £400, £395, £392, £390, £375, £368, £365, £350, £340, £330.

Blue heifers would be a bit more buyable than for the last three weeks. The top 16

    prices: £418, £395, £392, £375 x2, £355, £345, £340 x2, £325, £320 x2, £300, £290,

    £285 x2.

A few more Limousins about today. Bulls ranged from £222-£342. Heifers topped at

£420 for an absolute beauty from Rainhall Farm. Others either side of £300 and

young calves either side of £200.

Angus and Herefords, particularly the bulls on named sires continue to sell well.

The biggest jump today were the black and white bulls – a couple of fresh faces

round the ring today. In fairness, there were some nicer black sorts about today.

    Top 16 prices: £198, £192, £180, £176, £168, £162, £160, £158, £130 x2, £128 x2,

    £125 x3 and £120.

NEXT WEEK we have stirks to follow the calves. We politely remind vendors to ring

into the office no later than Tuesday lunchtime on 01200 441351 with anticipated

entries for the catalogue – which is available to view on-line Tuesday evening.

We need more suckler bred cattle again this week, please give us a try. Thank you.
