RED RIBBON WEEK – Choosing a Healthy Life Style!

Red Ribbon Week is a nationally recognized initiative of prevention and education about the dangers of drugs. At Winfield we will be focusing on how to make healthy choices in our lives.

How did Red Ribbon Week Begin? Enrique Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. He then decided to join the US Drug Enforcement Administration. His mother tried to talk him out of it. “I’m only one person”, he told her, “but I want to make a difference.” This agent, who tried to make a difference, was killed in his battle against illegal drugs in 1985. In honor of Camarena’s memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges.

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program. By wearing RED RIBBONS and participating in school and community events, our students will make pledges to choose a healthy life.

Our PTO will be sponsoring school events every day next week to help our students focus on choosing a healthy life style. Every student will be given a Red Ribbon on Monday to wear every day next week. We ask that you join our PTO and our STAFF by having your child participate in the following Spirit Days of Healthy Living:

Mon.: “WAKE UP SAYING NO TO DRUGS” – Wear your PJ’s to School!

Tues.: “PUT A CAP ON DRUGS” – Wear a crazy hat to School!

Wed.: ‘SOCK IT TO DRUGS” – Wear crazy socks and your RRW T-Shirt (if ordered).

Thurs.: ‘TEAM UP AGAINST DRUGS” – Wear Sports Attire or Winfield Spiritwear!

Caterpillar Academy, a ministry of Camp LRCA, is a full time daycare and preschool in the Winfield ar-ea. We also offer before and after school care, serving Winfield Ele-mentary and Jerry Ross Elemen-tary. We also offer a separate "Weather Insurance Policy" for a flat fee. If Crown Point schools are de-layed or closed due to weather, par-ents may bring their school aged child to Caterpillar Academy for the day. In the event of a weather relat-ed school delay, we will transport them to Winfield and Jerry Ross Ele-mentaries. In the event of a full day closure, we will provide lunch, snacks and activities for the day.

A copy of the enrollment form is

attached to this newsletter.

From our Nurse:

As the holidays rapidly approach we are given information to share with our school families about assistance programs that are available for families in need of help during the holiday season. Programs to assist needy families are offered through various local service organi-zations and churches. Some programs include the Angel Tree holiday gift program, holiday food baskets and clothing/coat vouchers. If your family could benefit from any of these programs please contact me for more information. All inquiries will be kept strictly confidential.

We have been seeing our share of strep at school. Please watch your children closely for signs of possible strep throat. Symptoms include stomachache, fever, red throat with or without white spots. Only a throat culture from the doctor’s office can confirm strep throat and antibiotics from a doctor are needed to treat it. If your child has been treated for strep they must be fever free for 24 hours and must have completed 24 hours of antibiotics before returning to school. Also re-inforcing good hand washing skills at home helps us to control the germs at school.

As the weather gets chilly please remember to send your child to school with a jacket or coat appropriate for the temperatures. They will not be allowed to go out for recess without a jacket or coat on the chilly days.
