Sales benefit Artis and the Eshkol-Wachman Movement Notation Center December 3 - 5, NADA Miami Beach 2015, booth # 1.10 -- For NADA Miami Beach 2015, Artis presents three wall carpets by dancer, choreographer, theorist and artist Noa Eshkol (1924-2007), alongside a selection of archival materials, curated by Prem Krishnamurthy, founder and curator at P!, and 2014 Artis Research Trip alum. Historical in origin yet strikingly contemporary in form, Eshkol’s vivid wall works of stitched fabrics cast a new light upon ideas of representation, reuse, and the irrational impulses of art. Through a juxtaposition of these visual works with original archival materials from Eshkol’s groundbreaking choreographic system (originally devised with architect, Avraham Wachman) the booth presentation contextualizes the interplay between conceptual rigor and formal experimentation underpinning multidisciplinary inquiry. Alongside Eshkol’s work, Artis is pleased to present Do you wanna dance? (2015), a commissioned kinetic sculpture by Jon Kessler. Made in response to Eshkol’s practice and relationship to movement, textiles and form, Kessler’s sculpture illuminates both the critical and humorous sides to his practice while providing a contemporary view on the historic impact of multidisciplinary artists like Eshkol.

In 2011 and 2012, Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart first exposed America and Europe to Eshkol’s wall carpets in a groundbreaking installation entitled Sharon Lockhart / Noa Eshkol, that traveled to The Jewish Museum, New York; LACMA, Los Angeles; and TBA21, Vienna. Artis provided support for The Noa Eshkol Chamber Dance Group’s performance on March 10, 2013 in conjunction with the Jewish Museum, and is pleased to present Minuet Dance from the Suite “Themes and Variations” by Noa Eshkol (2010), a c-print edition from Lockhart’s body of photographs of Eshkol’s dancers.

Artis limited editions by artists Guy Ben Ner, Barry Frydlender, Dor Guez, Nir Hod, Orit Raff, Guy Yanai, and Rona Yefman will also be available at the fair. Noa Eshkol’s estate is represented by neugerriemschneider, Berlin. Proceeds from the sales of Eshkol’s work support Artis and the Noa Eshkol Foundation for Movement Notation, Holon, Israel.
