FWB PARK BROWN | EXECUTIVE SEARCH1 IFFO | THE APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR GENERAL
1. Introduction
There a few positions in the food industry which combine working with governments, civil society and the private sector at both national and international level.
The marine ingredients industry is evolving to face the challenges of increased
competition against a backdrop of demand exceeding supply – as the only
global association representing the largest companies involved in the sector,
IFFO provides essential information to and support for its members.
The Director General of IFFO plays a vital role in ensuring IFFO members
receive services that are relevant and good value but also reflect the challenges
and opportunities of the wider industry outside IFFO membership. The
Director General draws on the experience and expertise of a multi-national
board of directors but must also provide guidance and leadership and be an
advocate for the industry.
A challenging role but one where the right individual can influence the
direction and future of this important sector.

2. IFFO The Marine Ingredients Organisation
IFFO is an international trade organisation that represents and promotes the marine ingredients industry, such as fishmeal, fish oil and other related industries.
Marine ingredients are nutritious products used mainly for aquafeed, land
animal feed as well as for human consumption and are derived from marine
organisms such as fish, krill, shellfish and algae. IFFO’s members reside in
more than 50 countries, account for over 50% of world production and 75% of
the fishmeal and fish oil traded worldwide. IFFO is an accredited Observer to
the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
Although our core products are fish meal and fish oil, we are cognizant of
similar emerging products from the marine environment and consider
these to be relevant to our scope. Our members are producers as well as
traders, feed companies, edible oil refiners, retailers, financial institutions,
governmental and non-governmental organisations.
IFFO was formed in 2001, but has a collective history of 50 years, encompassing
the activities of its predecessors, namely the Fishmeal Exporters’ Organisation
(FEO), International Association of Fish Meal Manufacturers (IAFMM) and
International Fishmeal and Oil Manufacturers’ Association (IFOMA). In 2012,
IFFO changed its name from IFFO The Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation to
IFFO The Marine Ingredients Organisation.
IFFO is a respected, constructive and proactive partner representing members
to raise standards of responsibility and nutrition in the global marine
ingredients industry.

3. IFFO’s History
IFFO was first incorporated as the International Association of Fish Meal Manufacturers (IAFMM) in 1959, bringing together a number of smaller organisations formed during the 1950’s.
IAFMM was re-incorporated as the International Fishmeal and Oil
Manufacturers Association (IFOMA) and merged with an associate group, the
Fishmeal Exporters Organisation (FEO) in 2001 to form IFFO.
Over the years, the organisation has seen many changes with the emergence
of the aquaculture industry providing a huge demand for both fishmeal and
fish oil. The role of IFFO and its predecessors was at one time to commission
scientific research into applications for fishmeal and fish oil but, in recent
years, has changed to provide market research and other services to members
but still on a not-for-profit basis, funded by membership subscription.
Another aspect that has not changed is that IFFO is primarily a producer
organisation, created and controlled by fishmeal and fish oil manufacturers.
In 2012, the board reviewed the name of the organisation following a
modernisation of the industry, the emergence of new added value derivatives
of fishmeal and fish oil and a wish to move away from the previous bulk
commodity image of the sector. The name IFFO was retained to reflect the
continuing core of fishmeal and fish oil producers but was supported by a
sub text “The Marine Ingredients Organisation” to reflect the wider diversity
of its membership and new product categories. This name change was
accompanied with a new logo and full rebrand, introducing a fresher design.
IFFO will continue to reflect the industry’s changing priorities and where
necessary offer strategic leadership on key issues. This means forging closer
relationships with partners further down the value chain, including food
processors, retailers and pharmaceutical companies, as well as with specialist
organisations, such as other trade associations and even NGOs which share
similar aims. In summary we intend to build on the first 50 years by serving
our members to meet the challenges of the future.
