This proposal is submitted to ISA Inc. Japan, by UNSW Institute of Languages, a business unit of UNSW Global Pty Limited, a wholly owned enterprise of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), for the provision of a 5-week English Language & UNSW Lecture Observation program in Australia.

Integrated Essential English or Career English program
Students are integrated with an international student
population into their program- a recognized test result (IELTS,
TOEFL, TOEIC, VEPT) will be required to pre place students in
the appropriate level of Essential English or Career English.
In addition to the 20 hours of tuition per week, participants have access to the Learning Support Unit library (LSU) for additional individual self-study, and will be directed to the LSU for further study or research as required.

Course Overview
Essential English
Essential English provides the basic English skills needed for all social, academic and work situations. The
courses progressively builds proficiency and skills through:
• Listening to conversations, news, documentary and drama programs
• Grammar in context
• Vocabulary building in topic areas
• Building reading and writing skills with emails, stories and essay paragraphs
• Speaking skills including conversation, discussion and presentations ,as well as pronunciation
Classes maximise student interaction and practice, using pair and group work as well as individual study.
Career English
Career English aims to develop the English skills needed to improve career prospects and communicate
effectively in any workplace situation. Career English is ideal if career goals are to work internationally,
dealing with clients or colleagues in English. It also prepares students for further studies in business. Career
English develops English skills needed in an increasingly globalised world. These skills include:
• Giving effective presentations
• Working in a team to solve work problems
• Giving and responding to feedback
• Writing business emails, reports and job applications
• Participating more confidently in English speaking meetings, discussions and negotiations
• Socialising with workmates
• Building vocabulary and comprehension through listening and reading using authentic media and
work texts
Assessment
Final course marks are based on:
• Ongoing assessment in class based on clearly focused tasks • Participation in class activities such as pair work, group work and special projects • Homework tasks and special assignments based on researching topics and spoken presentations • Term tests based on material covered during the period of study
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a UNSW Institute of Languages certificate
at a graduation ceremony. A minimum of 80% attendance is required in order to receive the certificate.

Timetable
Classes are taught every weekday from 9am until 11am, and 11:30am until 1:30pm. Students are able to
use their afternoons for self-directed studies, participation in clubs and sporting activities, volunteering,
Lecture Observations (when available) or excursions. Guided excursions, custom classes, and program
additions can be added during afternoons for an additional fee.
Program Inclusions
Program Management and Coordination
The study Tours and customised Programs Coordinator oversees all aspects of the program and acts as a
primary point of contact for group participants. The study Tours and customised Programs Coordinator is
responsible for the following:
• meeting the group regularly to check on student welfare
• conducting student evaluations
• coordinating group excursions and social events
• coordinating lecture observations at UNSW and special lectures
• being the contact person for the partner school
• consulting regarding program changes
• providing reports to the partner school
• coordinating the response to any accidents or medical emergencies
• organising visits by partner institution staff
Orientation Program
On arrival to campus, students are involved in a specially designed Orientation Program which includes the
following:
• Welcome Ceremony
• Introduction to the Staff at the Institute
• Information on the courses/learning pathways available
• Information on the welfare and additional services available e.g. accommodation, counselling
(academic and personal), sporting and recreational activities
Tour of the main campus of the University of New South Wales
The tour familiarises students with UNSW's sport and recreational, health and welfare facilities, including
• Sports Centre (swimming, gym, tennis, badminton, aerobics)
• Library
• Health Clinic
