BACKGROUND
Department of Vegetable Science & Floriculture
o f C S K H i m a c h a l P r a d e s h K r i s h i
Vishvavidyalaya Palampur, is organising a Model
Training Course (MTC) on "Advances in
Protected Cultivation of High Value Vegetable
Crops" with an objective of collection and
collation of scientific advances made in protected
c u l t i v a t i o n i n H i m a c h a l P r a d e s h a n d
dissemination of these among policy-planners,
scientists, farmers, students, industry and other
stakeholders. In open field conditions, high value
vegetable crops in summer and rainy seasons
suffer from biotic and abiotic stresses which leads
to low yield and poor fruit quality. Farmers spray
different agrochemical to check these stresses
which leads to environmental pollution. So,
cultivation of vegetable crops under the protected
environment is the best solution to overcome these
p rob lems . Pro tec ted cu l t iva t ion offers
opportunities to earn more from the limited land,
water and other resources. In the present scenario,
thousands of naturally ventilated polyhouses have
been constructed under different schemes
launched by Govt. of Himachal Pradesh. Farmers
of the state are growing different vegetable crops
like capsicum, tomato, parthenocarpic cucumber,
early cauliflower, garden pea and exotic
vegetables in their protected structures.
Production and protection technology for these
crops has been developed by the team of scientists
working in the state agricultural university.
Himachal Pradesh is one state which provides
high possibilities of successful protected cultivation
due to its mild climatic conditions and geographical
locations.
