FOR AND AGAINST ESSAY

STRUCTURE

OPENING: You state the topic and talk generally about it, but without giving your opinion.

BODY: Establishment of the points for and the points against in two paragraphs (always with justification).

CLOSING: Includes your opinion or a consideration/summary of the topic.

TIPS Make a list of the points for and the points against the

topic before you start writing.

Do not use informal style: short forms or colloquial language.

Do not use strong or emotional language (I firmly believe, I know, I therefore feel...)

Write well-developed paragraphs (always supported by reasons or examples).

Opinion words (I believe, In my opinion, I think...) are used in the closing paragraph to give your opinion on the topic.

Connectors ADDITION: and, in addition, furthermore,

moreover, what's more, also, too, as well as

CONTRAST: but, however, nevertheless, yet, still, although, in spite, despite, even if (incluso si), even though (a pesar de que, aunque)

EXAMPLE: for example, for instance, such as, like, particularly, especially, (more) specifically

USEFUL LANGUAGE

On the one hand,... On the other

hand,... It is true that,... Firstly/ Secondly/

Thirdly,... Such as... Due to... As a result,...

I believe that... In my opinion,... In my view,... The question is

whether... Consequently... To sum up,... In conclusion,...
