Courses for Adults with Learning Disabilities 2020/21 • 3

All about our courses

Please have a good look through before you enrol and decide on your preferred choices. All courses will include some online learning to help you improve your digital skills but don’t worry, we will help you build your skills gradually.

Welcome to our course guide especially for adults over the age of 19 with learning difficulties and disabilities.

All the classes are part-time.

Due to the need for social distancing, we are not holding Open Days this year. We want to help you enrol safely on your course(s) without having to come into a centre. Social distancing will also mean that we will have fewer learners in each class.

Booking your place on a course

Once you have chosen a course, please complete the online Course Request Form listing your courses in order of preference. We will do our best to place you in your preferred course. There may be a limit to the number of courses you can do to make sure there is room for everyone.

You might want to ask your parents/carers for help to fill in the form. The form will then come to us automatically and one of our team will contact you to discuss your choices and help you to enrol and pay for your course(s).

4 • Courses for Adults with Learning Disabilities 2020/21

We will be using more online learning this year. Please ask your parent and carers to help you practise this at home.

As we get to know you, we will provide support where you need it.

You will be given a badge on your first day. Please wear it whenever you come to one of our centres, so we can see it’s you.

Please come on time; we don’t want you to miss anything.

We expect you to attend every class and call one of our centres if you cannot come. Two weeks absence could mean you lose your place on the course. However if you are sick, please telephone the centre where your course is being held.

Be kind to people and expect them to be nice to you. If they are being mean or bullying you, walk away and ask someone for help.

Weather or Not it’s Scienceat Brookfield Adult Learning Centre


Case study: Shiraz HussainWhen Shiraz joined us, he hoped to live more independently and get a job. Since then he has improved his English and IT skills, and has increased his confidence using many programmes including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Shiraz has also worked hard to gain a qualification in Business Administration and is currently brushing up on his Maths skills. Shiraz says that while he finds the subject difficult, he really enjoys it and it is his favourite subject.

As Shiraz has aspirations to start a job, he enrolled on the Preparation for Work course. This course has helped him to improve his interviewing technique, practise the process of filling in job applications, and discuss different situations that could be encountered in the workplace. In the future he would like to work in an office or a shop and live in his own flat. Additionally he has participated in charity work and completed an office-based work placement, where he gained hands-on experience working in a team, handling money, interacting with others and more. This experience has improved his confidence and hopefully will help him find the right job.

Shiraz says he has gained a lot from studying at the college as he has made many friends, thinks his classes are fun and finds the staff very kind and helpful.
