A Hidden Weapon of Aggression
America stands as the citadel of freedom in a world beset by war. German Nazism, Italian Fascism, Japanese Militarism have launched an open brutal attack against us. We see, and our armed services are feeling, the power of their weapons. But there is one sinister, unseen force at work for them inside our own borders.
Conquest by Propaganda
Up to the end of the first World War, the great strategies of conquest were military. Since then a new strategy has been used to gnaw at the vitals of a nation until only a hollow shell remained to be crushed by forces of arms.
The Axis thinks it can turn the "Trojan Horse "* of propaganda against the United States and the rest of the Western Hemisphere to-
Divide and Conquer from Within
* When the Greeks failed to break the Trojan resistance after ten years of siege, in the 12th century B. C., they tricked the city into hauling a great wooden horse inside the walls. Within were hidden Greeks who at night opened the city gates for their comrades and thus achieved the conquest of Troy.
Nazis and the Trojan Horse The hidden trickery in propaganda was used by
the Nazis to create social disruption by inciting
hate within the nations they were planning to
attack with their war machine. Their agents in the
Americas are trying to create the same weakening
conditions among us as a forerunner of actual war.
Japanese and the Trojan Horse The Japanese stuck closer to the old Greek model. In Honolulu, in the Philippines, in Malaya, in the East Indies, in China -in all the lands toward which greed and despair drove them -they had agents posing as harmless farmers, merchants and fishermen. When the attack came, these adapters of the Trojan Horse were ready to betray the people who had sheltered them. Pearl Harbor was one result. But the Japanese know, too, how to use the Trojan Horse of propaganda. They whisper lies that tend to divide their enemies and at the same time make them over -confident.
The use of a minority group as a scapegoat is one of the oldest devices in history, used by tyrants to gain power and keep themselves in power. Here are a few examples .. .
IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE rulers operated on the "bread and circus" principle. When bread was scarce, circuses were used to divert the masses. But the circuses of Rome were no Barnum and Bailey affairs. Men of weak and defenseless groups were thrown to the lions, and scores of these victims were Christians.
With a barrage of flimsy explanations and excuses
by radio and press Japan made war upon China
and called it "policing." To the illogical, distorted
minds of the Nipponese these "reasons" for
scourging a nation were enough.
WHEN ARMIES AND BOMBERS FAILED
to crush the Chinese, the Japanese military fooled
their own people by blaming it first on aid from
Russia, then on aid from the United States, then
on England and the Dutch in the East Indies.
These foreigners from the West, said the Tokyo
tricksters, were keeping all Asia from enjoying
the "prosperity" that Japan wanted to establish.
Of course they never said that the blasted, ruined
cities of China were the best evidence of that
"prosperity."
IN GERMANY, Hitler was still the most skillful
master of the tactics of hate. He had gained and
held power by preaching hate.
"Why did Germany lose the war ?"
"Because of the Jews."
"Why does Germany suffer from depression ?"
"The Jews are to blame."
The German people were so blinded by this smoke
screen that they did not realize until it was too
late, that they were surrendering their liberty.
If the strategy were reduced to simple terms it
could be expressed as follows-

After winning domination over Germany, Hitler decided to use the same strategy in conquering
other nations. So he searched for a group that was a minority both in the German population and in the populations of his chosen victims.
Several minorities were considered for this role
of scapegoat- Catholics, Slays, and others. But
finally it was decided to undermine the national
unity of other nations by feeding the fires of sus-
picion toward the Jews.
Barometer Warning
The record of the last 2,000 years of history has
provided us with one unmistakable storm warning
when human rights are in danger -a campaign
against minorities. This has happened so repeat-
edly that it is high time we profited by the experi-
ence.
Persecution of any one group is a danger signal.
If it is allowed to continue, it is only a question of
time until the civil rights and liberties of every-
one will be lost.
America's Self -Interest Foes of democracy, operating secretly in our midst are trying to stimulate racial, social and religious prejudices as a means of creating dis- unity. Whether the source of this propaganda is foreign or domestic, the result is always the same.
Under the smoke screen of group hatred, un- scrupulous elements attain objectives destructive to our common interests. The menace comes from Asia as well as Europe, and is aimed at South as well as North America.
What the Axis Wants in America Are the dictator nations preparing to soften our
democracy for the "kill" by spreading propaganda
in America?
Yes.
They rely on Trojan Horse tactics to weaken our
war effort and cause us to collapse from within.
There are three primary objectives of the Axis!

First Axis Objective
To alienate the loyalties of 20,000,000 Americans whom Hitler claims as Germans because they or their ancestors were born in Germany.
Of the "Germans" living outside the Reich, and
claimed as part of the German nation, this Nazi map indicates that about 27,000,000 live in the
Western Hemisphere. Hitler holds that no oath to an American Republic, no New World ties, can
release these millions from their "obligations of
blood" to serve him in planting the "Trojan Horse" within the citadel of American liberties,
Second Axis Objective
To break the solidarity of the Western Hemi- sphere. The Axis powers have spread an enor- mous amount of propaganda in South America against the "Yankee imperialist." The purpose is to prevent a concerted effort for the protection and defense of the Americas.
The aggressors hope to isolate the United States and crush our neighbors to the South in the pin- cers of totalitarianism.
The Nazis are using the same methods in South
America that they used in Europe - varying the
technique to fit their objective. They spread prop-
aganda that the United States is an imperialistic
nation bent on dominating the whole hemisphere.
The Japanese employ similar tactics in the Far
East. They preach "liberation" while they are
bombing defenseless natives in China, the Philip-
pines, Malaya, Java, Borneo. Their real plan is to
become the sole rulers of Asia and to make slaves
of its peoples, just as Hitler is trying to bind
Europe in chains.
Third Axis Objective
To split each of the American Republics internally. This is part of the plan to isolate and conquer the democracies of the world one by one. German, Italian and Japanese propaganda seeks to magnify every difference of opinion. Classes and races are set against each other. Political groups are urged to destroy each other. Even individuals are told to hate their fellows. The only purpose is to under- mine national unity, which is every country's greatest strength.
Spread of Poisonous Propaganda in the United States
Alien agents often fool important people with their subtle propaganda. These in turn spread the poi- son either through organizations cloaked with Americanism or through whispering campaigns.
Vast sums of money have been poured into propaganda by totalitarian governments. It is done so cleverly that it is almost impossible to identify it. Play safe: DON'T TALK. THINK BEFORE SPREADING "UNCONFIRMED REPORTS."
How Does This Attack Threaten the Interests of Every Man,
Woman, and Child in the Americas?
First Effect of Totalitarianism -
DESTRUCTION OF PRIVATE ENTER- PRISE AND ENSLAVEMENT
OF LABOR
Leaders of Industry, Agriculture, Labor and Finance at first cooperated with the Nazi party on the theory that they could prevent the spread of Bolshevism and thereby build a greater Germany. But these leaders had unleashed a force they could not control. Management was seized by the Nazis. The workers' organizations were destroyed. Pri- vate leadership vanished. Party leaders ruled with an iron hand. Power had passed from white shirt to brown shirt.
Private ownership and Management no longer
exist in Nazi Germany. The State alone is in
control.
The worker too is controlled by the State. He has
no voice in deciding where he will work, what job
he will have, what hours he will work, or what
pay he will receive. He works more for less pay.
BUSINESS IS DOMINATED INSIDE AND OUT in the totalitarian state. In Nazi Germany, industrialists and financiers are held in the strait- jacket of the Hitler government.
For example, prior to Germany's present needs for every available worker and soldier, a German business man was not allowed to lay -off surplus employees even though the public had reduced its purchase of his product to such an extent that he was threatened with bankruptcy.
The German business man cannot decide for him- self what products his factory will make, what articles his store will stock, what goods he will im-
port. He is only a medium through which Nazi orders are carried out.
JAPANESE BUSINESS is merely the servant of the army or the serf of a. few great industrial families. The Nippon of cherry blossoms, gardens and prints has been crushed in the mechanized march of militarism. Half a dozen industrialists working out plans of conquest with the High Com- mand control absolutely the lives and work of manufacturers, dealers, store owners.
Totalitarianism, Enemy of Labor
In Germany the worker has lost all economic freedom. His hours and wages are fixed by the Labor Exchange, which is a department of the State. He is compelled to carry a book which serves as an "internal passport," containing his work record and ratings as dictated by his Nazi supervisors. With- out his labor book he cannot get a job. The workers' organi- zations have been regimented into a government - controlled unit, armed by the rulers and included in the dictatorial organization known as the "Labor Front."
Japanese labor is permitted no organization worthy of the name. Workers slave uncon- scionably long hours for wages that can buy only the barest subsistence of a coolie standard of living. Hope and decent food and elementary comforts are all unknown to the docile factory hand of the no longer flowery empire.
Raw Materials In Germany the allotments of import and export permits for raw materials are all regulated by the requirements of the state economic plan.
In Japan all production is equally rigidly governed by the needs of the army and navy in their program of aggression and conquest.
Secret Police In Germany the Gestapo, the secret police, pervades all eco- nomic and political life.
In Japan the so- called intelli- gence agents go to hysterical lengths to control thought and talk.
Managers of Industry In Germany managers of busi- ness and industry are not chosen on the basis of merit and ability, but purely for political reasons or payment of tribute. In Japan the managers of in- dustry are subordinates of the Mitsui and Mitsubishi, or strictly subordinated to the army.
Second Effect of Totalitarianism - THE DESTRUCTION OF CIVIL. RIGHTS
1. A country where it is impossible to speak freely, even to your friends or in the bosom of your own family, without the risk of being be- trayed.
We take our liberties for granted because we do not realize what it would be like to live in a country that has lost them-
2. A country where at any time you may suddenly "dis- appear" into a concentration camp.
3. A country where you are not entitled to trial by jury.
4. A country where freedom of the press has been abolished and the government manufactures the news.
5. A country where listening to a foreign broadcast is treason.
6. A country where at every turn of the road you are expected to salute some petty officer or official.
Third Effect of Totalitarianism - The Stamping Out of Christianity
In Germany godlessness is in the saddle and free- dom to worship, a deep- rooted democratic insti- tution, is gone. Between 9,000 and 11,000 Catholic schools have been liquidated. Of the 18,000 Prot- estant pastors, 1,300 have been arrested since 1934. Countless priests have been executed or impris- oned. Religious groups are harassed and perse- cuted. The campaign is extended into all occu- pied regions.
In Japan the foreign Christian missions have been abolished, while Christian centers in China are a favorite target for Japanese bombs.
The reason for this religious persecution is ob-
vious. Totalitarianism makes the State the sole object of religious allegiance. Such allegiance is
impossible for a Christian or a Jew, because this State is constantly doing things that violate Christian -Jewish ethics:
In all countries vilifying so- called "non - Aryans"; except, of course, the Japanese.
Vilifying intended victims of aggression; for instance, the Swedes, the Roumanians.
Vilifying specifically the Jews.
Beating and torturing political non-con- formists.
Sanctioning illicit love.
What They Say
"The religions are all alike, no matter what they call themselves. They have no future - certainly none for the Germans. Fascism, if it likes, may come to terms with the Church. So shall I. Why not? That will not prevent me from tearing up Christianity root and branch, and annihilating it in Germany."

"When a National Socialist dons his brown shirt he ceases to be a Catholic or a Protestant and becomes a soldier of Hitler, whose religion is his faith in the Leader. We National Socialists must refuse to allow German history and Teutonic majesty to be subordinated to so- called religion."

Just as statues of the Roman Emperor were placed in pagan temples to be worshipped by the people, the dictators are now virtually deified.
A government which rests upon servile obedience
cannot permit its people to recognize two masters. Therefore the Nazis aim at the complete suppres-
sion of Christianity and the substitution of "one
faith -one leader."
In Japan, the Emperor is to his people what the Roman Emperor was 2,000 years ago. He is the
son of Heaven, a divine personage whom ordinary mortals dare not approach.
Fourth Effect of Totalitarianism - The Degradation of Women
and the Regimentation of Children
The policy of Nazi Germany and Japan is to use women for one main purpose -to breed cannon fodder. In line with this policy, German children are taken from their parents and regimented at an early age in a severe course of training for bloodshed and conquest. In Japan the first beginnings of a real feminist movement were crushed so that nothing should interfere with the breeding of soldiers for the Emperor. In both countries the leaders cry for more room for their people and at the same time for more people to fill up the room.
Fifth Effect of Totalitarianism-
WAR. We all know the consequences of the
Axis war policy.
In Europe, a mad armament race- Munich -jit- ters -more armament -threats -ultimatums -an agonized world.
In Asia, brutal Japanese aggression in Manchuria
-"incident" of four years of blood in China -talk of peaceful intentions -occupation of Indo -China
by force -special envoys to lull Washington sus-
picions- treachery - hypocrisy -Pearl Harbor.

"Liberty is not only a heritage, but a fresh conquest for each generation."
No man or group of men can confuse, divide and conquer America if we are united in purpose. The traitors to democracy who seek to stir up panic and internal strife by setting neighbor against neighbor, group against group, religion against re- ligion, cannot disrupt a nation united in its demo- cratic faith.
Trojan horses cannot graze where democracy is vigilant and virile.
The vigilance of free men must detect and disarm the propaganda used to undermine America, how- ever cleverly spread. We may hear this propa- ganda quoted, and innocently so, by our very neigh- bors. It is not possible for the average person, unaided by a force of detectives, to determine how widely this propaganda has spread out fan -like from an alien source before reaching him through a friendly one. However plausible it may sound, and through whatever friendly channel it may come to us, we must recognize that this propa- ganda has originated in groups alien to America, and must ourselves refute and repudiate it.
Virile Americans will not be suckers. As Abra- ham Lincoln said, "You may fool all the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all the time; but you can't fool all of the people all the time."
Outstanding business men, church leaders of all faiths, and labor leaders in the United States are doing their utmost to prevent the American people from losing their civil rights, freedom of worship, labor rights and system of private enterprise, through this vicious "play" on prejudices by alien interests. They seek to save us from a folly that will mean the loss of self- respecting life, real lib- erty, and all chance for the pursuit of happiness.
Each one of us is called to join this volunteer army to defend America from within. The first line of defense of our country is in our own individual thoughts and actions. As we stand together with mutual respect for each other's rights in a united nation of men and women devoted to liberty, we shall build here a people so strong that no power on earth will be able to destroy us. It is for us to be resolute in spirit against all the madness of tyranny in our contemporary world. This is the mission of America.
