Annual Banquet and Election News

The Annual Banquet took place on April 8th at Bobby J’s. Everyone had a great time socializing and catching up with old friends, and in some cases making new friends.

Mary Coffin from the North Country Trail Association gave a presentation on the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) route through the Adirondacks. While the NCT meanders from Vermont to North Dakota, portions of the Adirondack Park do not have a defined footpath, meaning there is currently no contiguous trail. Mary and her team have spent countless hours forging a path, but there is more work to be done and the process is long. It was an informative presentation, highlighted by beautiful photographs of the region and the team, and we appreciate that Mary was able to join us.

The Nominations Committee submitted the following slate of officers and directors for consideration and it was met with unanimous support — President, Donna Flood; Vice President, Claudia Lawler; Treasurer, Jim Beardsley; Secretary, Merridy Knips; Three-Year Directors, Marty Ruszaj and Sharon Kelly; One-Year Directors, Lori Chiarelli and Jeanne Moog. Congratulations to our 2016-17 officers and directors.

A huge shout out to Frank Occhiuto for all his hard work serving as our Vice President for these past many years. Although Frank has chosen to step down from his leadership role, he remains very active with the club. Additionally, we send heartfelt thanks to our outgoing Directors for all their contributions to the club — Sally Castern, Claudia Lawler, Ed Oleksy, and Gloria Potzler. We know we’ll continue to see everyone out on the trail.

Jeanne Moog read a letter she received from Florence Mazur, one of our founding members, in which she shared fond hiking memories.

Marie Schillo was acknowledged for her many years of fun, friendship, hike leading, and hike coordinating. Marie has indicated she will be “retiring” at the end of this summer’s hiking season.

BUNION BADGES

Every mile you hike on scheduled FTC hikes brings you closer to earning “miles earned” patches, otherwise known as a Bunion Badge. Your first patch is awarded upon completion of 100 miles.

At this year’s Annual Banquet, 25 members received a Bunion Badge. Milestones ranged from 100 miles to 3,000 miles!!! Way to go hikers!!!

TRAIL WORK PARTIES

This month’s hike schedule includes six trail work parties. The dates are Saturday, May 14; Wednesdays, May 18; May 25; June 1; June 8; and Saturday, June 25.

Additional details on the work parties will be provided via our Yahoo group email. If you are interested in giving back to the trail, getting a bit of exercise, and socializing with your fellow hikers, please consider joining one of the work parties. The trail thanks you!

ALLEY CAT TRAIL WORK

FLTC uses Alley Cat crews for major infrastructure work on the trails (main and branch), including trail building and rerouting, and the construction of lean-tos and bridges.

As the Fingers Lake Trail runs from Allegany State Park in the West to the Catskill Mountains in the East, the term Alley Cat literally means “Alle-gany to the Cat-skills.” Clever, huh?!

Four Alley Cats are being scheduled for 2016. The first Alley Cat is in Cattaraugus County Saturday, May 7 through Wednesday, May 11.

The Alley Cat Crew will undertake two distinct projects in May — the first is building a bridge in the vicinity of Route 240 and Fancy Tract; the second is a trail reroute though Elkdale State Forest. If you can help, we’d love to have you join us. Contact Dave Potzler.

Further information on this and the other Alley Cats may be found at http://www.fltconference.org/trail/members1/volunteer-trail-workers/alley-cat-crew/

Foothills Trail Club www.foothillstrailclub.org 3

On your left is a picture of our new trail marker which will be posted in various places along the Conservation Trail. When the Quick Response (QR) code is scanned, using a QR code reader on your smart phone, our hiking schedule from Facebook will be displayed — but no log-in to Facebook is required (although we hope you are already liking and checking out our Facebook page!). The QR code reader is obtained from your App Store for free. The QR reader will pick up the code from your computer or printed TALES, so go ahead and give it a try!

The signs have already been posted at Darien Lake State Park, Hunters Creek, and Erie County Forest.

Thank you to all our club members who worked on this project, especially Ed Oleksy who led the charge.

ATVs on DEC Land Although it was removed from next year’s NYS budget, there is interest in increasing the allowable weight of ATVs on DEC lands. This means it may be introduced as a separate bill and causes great concern for the FLTC, Foothills, and others who view this as having a huge negative impact on natural resources and public lands across the state. On the following page is the FLTC’s oppos i t ion to th is l eg is la t ion . Any correspondence opposing the legislation from as many people as possible to all NYS Assembly and Senate people would be helpful. If you are able to, please notify your elected officials and tell them you oppose this legislation!

Trail Stewards On pages 9 and 10 of this TALES you will find our Trail Stewards list. Its being published for two reasons.

1) If you are Trail Steward, please look over the list and report any inaccuracies to Dave Potzler.

2) For all you hikers out there, if you see something on the trail that needs attention, anything that concerns you, please take note and contact the respective Trail Steward at your first convenience.

We appreciate and value all the work the Trail Stewards do to maintain the Conservation Trail. Keep up the good work ladies and gentlemen!!!

HELP WANTED

Trail Steward Opportunities Available: We are still in need of trail stewards for a few sections of the CT. The sections range from about one mile to five and half miles and they are located on Maps M1/CT1, CT4, CT7, and CT9. If you are interested in more information about any of these Trail Steward openings, please contact Dave Potzler [email protected] (949-3295), Gus Phillips [email protected] (646-5034), or Frank Occhiuto [email protected] (651-9877).

Membership: Please recruit new members!! A club eventually fails if there is not a steady influx of new membership. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so as soon as possible. Size matters!! The bigger the membership, the easier it becomes to manage the club and maintain the trail.

Publicity: Be Part of the Team!! - Our club membership depends upon signing up new members and making contacts with like-minded people in the community. Please become a part of the publicity team that spreads the word that “if you love the outdoors, joining the Foothills Trail Club is a wonderful opportunity to enhance your outdoor experience.” Contact Ellen Bank for brochures, business cards and information at 435-5105 or [email protected]

Foothills Trail Club www.foothillstrailclub.org 8

Trail Stewards Meeting Trail Stewards from FLTC and Foothills met on February 20. Some business was discussed but it was mostly a social gathering as the two groups rarely have a chance to get together. It was a nice way to spend a winter’s day.

It was all business at the April 9th Foothills Trail Stewards Meeting. And while the calendar says Spring, it was another wintery day. Twenty-four people attended the meeting which was held at the Holland Community Center. Gus Phillips and Dave Potzler led the conversation.

Among the topics discussed were:

County Hike Series is in Cattaraugus County. Our trail stewards needs to clean up their sections in preparation for the 150+ hikers making their way through the trail. Marking/blazing the trail should be a priority.Landowners and Trail Rerouting — if a landowner wants the trail moved off their property, you must contact Dave Potzler as much is involved in changing the trail route and properly recording the new coordinates and getting new maps. When doing trail work, make sure to record your hours, identify what map you worked, include time spent driving to and fro, and whether the work was on public or private land. This informations should be sent to Mike Schlicht who then passes the information to FLTC. This is important as time spent doing trail work leads to grants and other funding. As well, any other work done to benefit the club, including office work, publicity, leading hikes, etc., should be reported to Mike.Anyone who helps to work on projects that are on State land must complete a Volunteer Form. There are two different forms — a temporary form for folks helping on special projects such as the Elkdale State Forest, and a permanent form for trail stewards. Dave Potzler can provide you the form, and he’ll be bringing them to the Alley Cat.State Law also requires that any club activity (ie. hiking) on State land (parks and forests) with more than 20 people requires the submission of a permit request. Contact any of the Board members if this pertains to you.Trail registers exist along certain sections of the Trail, particularly once the CT meets up with the FLT. If you would like a trail register for your section of trail, contact any of the Board members. We can get trail registers from the FLTC. We discussed standardizing the contents of the register to include a notepad, pencils and pencil sharpener, and brochures of the FTC and FLTC, and where appropriate also NCT brochures. There will be some trail closings in May due to turkey hunting season. Always check the trail conditions section of the FLTC website to see what sections may be closed, whether for hunting or other reasons. The link is http://www.fltconference.org/trail/go-hiking/trail-conditions/trail-condition-notices/ and it is updated regularly. The Club currently has 2 chainsaws with backpacks, 2 weed whackers with metal blades, a hazel hoe, pulaski axe, and roque hoe. If you need any of these items to maintain your section of the trail, let us know….we will be sure you get them.

Other items bandied about were:

Upcoming Alley CatSag Wagons for the County Hike SeriesWestern Passport ProgramNew Trail SignsNational Trails Day

Trail Stewards are encouraged to contact any of the following individuals should you have any concerns about your section, require help with maintenance, or just to say hi. In no particular order they are — Gus Phillips, Dave Potzler, Donna Flood, Frank Occhiuto, Annette Brzezicki.

Much important work was accomplished on the 9th, but it wasn’t all serious…..it was a fun meeting with lots of laughs. Join us next time.

Do not participate if the event may present a hazard for which you or your party members are not prepared. If weather is questionable or if you have questions, please call the named hike coordinator; the hike may be canceled. When participating, please respect the coordinator and do not break away from the group without telling them. We suggest you always keep your eye on someone in front of you, and behind you if you are in the lead. Please remember that hike leaders are not guides; they are volunteers, willing to share their knowledge and experience with you. Please give them your cooperation and respect. The leader has the right to refuse anyone who is not prepared for the outing. In addition, if the hike leader does arrange carpooling, passengers are expected to contribute toward the cost of transportation. Finally, since there are RISKS INVOLVED in hiking everyone participating does so at his or her own risk.

➢ REMEMBER TO RESPECT LANDOWNER RIGHTS: Stay on the trail, don’t take shortcuts, don’t walk on crops, don’t build fires or camp on private land and NEVER, EVER enter landowner buildings.

➢ There are hikes scheduled for many days in May and June. Be sure to thank those members who have volunteered to lead these activities.

Bring lunch on all day hikes The weather may force cancellations. If in doubt, check with coordinator. Always check trail conditions before you hike at: www.fingerlakestrail.org
