Haggen in Anthem to close its doors in next 60 days

ANTHEM ndash After being open just three months Haggen in Anthem has been placed on a list of Haggen stores to be closed The closedown will take place in the next 60 days

Haggen sent out a release on Aug 14 stating that multiple stores across the West will soon be closed or sold The release notes that Haggen has not yet determined how many jobs will be affected as a result of the closures Haggen in Anthem was included in a list of stores being closed along with four other Arizona stores two in Tucson one in Flagstaff and one in Prescott Valley Sixteen California stores five Oregon stores and one Washington store are also scheduled to close

The stores will continue to operate until the closing process is complete

The Haggen company has faced multiple problems since their expansion from 18 stores to 164 stores last year when Haggen bought 146 stores after the AlbertsonsSafeway merger Last July Albertsons announced a lawsuit against Haggen over contract negotiations Haggen has also faced opposition from employee representatives after

cutting positions and work hours for employees in the past few months

In the Aug 14 release announcing store closings Haggen CEO Pacific Southwest Bill Shaner called closing and selling stores a ldquotough choicerdquo adding that they would be aiming to invest ldquoin stores that have the potential to thrive under the Haggen bannerrdquo

ldquoHaggenrsquos goal going forward is to ensure a stable healthy company that will benefit our customers associates vendors creditors stakeholders as well as the communities we serverdquo said Shaner in the release

Haggen has not yet announced if they have potential buyers for the stores that are closing

NEW RIVER ndash Aug 19 2014 started like a typical rainy day during the monsoon season In just a few hours however it was evident that this was no ordinary storm Record rainfall caused damage all over the Valley and New River especially was hit hard About five inches of rain fell that day much of it in just five hours

Anthem man wins gold medal in weightlifting

ANTHEM ndash Fred Martinez of Anthem won a gold medal on Aug 12 at the International Weightlifting Federation Masters World Cup in Dallas

Martinez competed in the 40-44-years-old age division and the 62 kilogram (136 pound) weight class In the snatch portion of the contest Martinez had three lifts of 75 kilograms (165 pounds) 80 kilograms (176 pounds) and 85 kilograms (187 pounds) missing the last lift by an inch In the clean-and-jerk portion of the event he lifted 85 kilograms (187 pounds) 90 kilograms (198 pounds) and 100 kilograms (220 pounds) missing the last lift by an inch

Phoenix Water awarded drought resiliency grant

PHOENIX ndash The City of Phoenix Water Department has been awarded $300000 in Federal funds for an innovative proposal aimed to proactively store water and build the cityrsquos long-term drought resiliency

The funding provided by the US Bureau of Reclamation will be used for a new well that will directly inject city water supplies into the local aquifer for long term storage During times of drought the well can be switched to recover and pump water supplies that were previously stored

ldquoThe ASR well will recharge approximately 2400 gallons per minute into the aquifer or 34 million gallons per dayrdquo said the cityrsquos hydrologist Gary

Gin ldquoOnce this project is completed in July 2017 the city will be able to store multiple water sources within this wellrdquo

ldquoAs a desert city Phoenix knows the value of water and its importance for our futurerdquo said the cityrsquos Water Director Kathryn Sorensen ldquoThis project provides additional resiliency for times of drought and surface water shortagerdquo

The US Bureau of Reclamationrsquos WaterSMART Drought Resiliency Project Grants Program announced the selection on Aug 12 for 23 projects to receive grants totaling $52 million

Arizona Archaeology Society meeting to be held Sept 9CAVE CREEK ndash Learn about

Arizona archaeological wonders at the upcoming Arizona Archaeology Society ndash Desert Foothills Chapter meeting J Scott Wood who worked as an archaeologist in the Tonto National Forest will present at the Sept 9 meeting

Wood received his MA in Archaeology from Arizona State University and was an archaeologist in Tonto National Forest for 40 years before retiring earlier this year Earlier he worked at Pueblo Grande Museum and at the ASU Office of Cultural Resource Management

In retirement Wood continues as a professional advisor for two Arizona Archaeological Society Chapters (Desert Foothills and Rim Country) He is an establishing member of the Friends of the Tonto National Forest and continues work at Goat Camp (near Payson)

Wood was named Arizona Archaeological Society Professional Archaeologist of the Year in 2011 His volunteer activities are extensive developing public archaeological interpretive sites at Sears Kay and Goat Camp assisting with training Arizona Site Stewards

for the Arizona State Parks Department program helping with AAS workshopsfield schoolshike leader to specific areas of interest and partnering with AAS and ASU Professor David Abbott for pottery temper studies suggesting possible prehistoric trade routes Wood is an author and coauthor of many publications and his Checklist of Pottery Types for the Tonto National Forest is a primary expert reference for prehistoric pottery in the Tonto National Forest Central Arizona Tradition

Goat Camp Ruin is in the Payson area much like Shoofly Ruin and Risser Ruin The currently assumed occupation is approximately 750 to 1280 CE The occupants of this ruin were under Hohokam influence if not Hohokam colonists Clues to the Hohokam culture exist in pottery types rounded room corners and others artifact hints

After several changes in ownership and extensive artifact pot- hunting the city of Payson is the current owner With subsequent little activity for years the Rim Country Chapter of AAS with Woodrsquos assistance proposed an eventual archaeological interpretive site

as well as hiking trail for this 6 acre parcel of land (similar to Shoofly Ruin)

Wood leads groups of volunteers each spring and fall the past few years excavating and interpreting areas within the overall complex The goal is not rebuilding or total excavation rather knowledge and public education through an interpretive package Wood provides a report on recent

activities and findings at Goat Camp as well as the plans for the future As one of the founders in the Friends of the Tonto National Forest Wood is also updating us on ldquoThe Tonto Friendsrdquo activities including the survey project planned for this fallwinter on Perry Mesa

Everyone is welcome to attend the Sept 9 Arizona Archaeology Society ndash Desert Foothills Chapter meeting The

NORTH VALLEY ndash A new group of women veterans in the North Valley is being formed This will be open to all women who have served on active duty in any branch of the US Armed Forces who are now living in the area bounded by Jomax Road and Black Canyon City

The group objectives are both social and service-oriented and include sharing histories making new friends offering care and comfort to active duty deployed women service members and assisting local area women veterans in need

In hopes a rush order would be possible the paver vendor Laser Impressions Sunnydale Calif was notified and the circumstances explained Laser Impressions jumped into action and immediately engraved the paver Twenty-four hours later the paver was in Anthem

Within the hour Mike Spinelli a local Air Force veteran and friend of the Anthem Veterans Memorial laid the paver on behalf of Sr Master Sergeant Monn who had been hospitalized the night prior The paver is in place at the Anthem Veterans Memorial and the Monn family has been sent all the photos to share with their father fulfilling his wish

Sr Master Sergeant Monnrsquos paver joins 1500 Memorial pavers each commemorating a military memberrsquos service Thirty new pavers were laid at an Aug 13 ceremony each honoring bravery sacrifice and service

Well not exactly But I did end up walking (wandering lost) around a high school campus trying to help my grandson with his orientation Since he has autism I thought I would be useful Not so sure about that Adults be very afraid of high schools because they are large sprawling places with throngs of teenagers all looking slightly bewildered and lost What I found out is that high school is no place for a grandma on a hot day in August

So in case you havenrsquot noticed schools around town are back in session and parents everywhere are rejoicing The boredom has ended to only be replaced by the hectic schedules homework and never-ending list of school supplies to buy Kids are trying to get back in the groove only to be faced with the reality that they have to get up early and suddenly become organized

We may be still be in the

clutches of summer but vacations have officially come to a screeching halt Those little yellow school buses are making frequent stops school zone crosswalks are filled with giggling kids so itrsquos time to drive slow and enjoy the scenery Parents everywhere can be seen taking a collective sigh of relief kids are happy to show off their new clothes and teachers brace themselves for another busy year School bells are ringing

For many children this is the time of heartbreaks triumphs and pinkeye Some kids make the team and life is good holding promise for better things to come Other kids have tried and face the rejection of not being on ldquothe listrdquo that is taped on the coachrsquos door letting the world know who made the cut and who didnrsquot Children will have to deal with the coughs sneezes colds flu and possible pinkeye infection Yes itrsquos not all fun and gameshellipschool can be tough

Rattlesnake Fire burning in Castle Creek Wilderness

BUMBLE BEE ndash A wildfire is burning in the Castle Creek Wilderness near Bumble Bee Sparked by lightning the Rattlesnake Fire was first reported by Mt Union Lookout on Aug 16

According to a report from the Prescott National Forest News Service the fire was estimated at approximately 75 acres when it was first reported It has since grown to 1300 acres as of the evening of Aug 17 Smoke is visible along the I-17 in the Sunset Point area

The Prescott National Forest News Service reports that the Rattlesnake Fire is not burning near any buildings

ldquoThere are no structures private property or critical infrastructure threatened by the Rattlesnake Firerdquo an Aug 17 release notes

Since no structures are threatened the Forest Service will monitor and manage the fire The Rattlesnake Fire is burning

in an area of steep terrain and is difficult for firefighters to access

ldquoFire managers are continuing to monitor the Rattlesnake Fire for now based on firefighter safety and accessibility issues related to the steep terrainrdquo the Forest Service noted in its Aug 17 release ldquoThe Forest Servicersquos fire management objectives in designated wilderness areas are to permit lightning-caused fires to play a natural ecological role on the landscape and to reduce the risks and consequences of wildfire escaping from wildernessrdquo

Arizonarsquos bald eagles break breeding-season recordsNORTH VALLEY ndash With

the last bald eagle nestling out of the nest Arizonarsquos bald eagle population continues its upward trend as it set multiple breeding-season productivity records this year Key productivity records that were broken in 2015 include number of breeding areas occupied breeding areas eggs laid active breeding areas successful breeding attempts young hatched nestlings fledged and the nest success and productivity ratios All of these measures are important indicators of the speciesrsquo health

In Arizona at least 89 bald eagle eggs were laid an increase of 16 and a record 76 breeding areas were identified including eight new areas For the first time ever the number of nestlings that fledged exceeded 60 with 66 young birds making it to the important milestone of their first flight The previous fledging record was 58

Annual productivity records indicate that bald eagles continue to flourish in the state Bald eagles in Arizona were removed from the federal

Endangered Species Act in 2011 The departmentrsquos conservation efforts contributed to the species recovery Nationally the birds remain protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act

ldquoBald eagles in Arizona continue to surprise us and surpass all expectations for the population Given that these birds depend on waterways to live itrsquos amazing that they have flourished and grown in Arizonarsquos limited habitat from only 11 pairs in 1978

when the species was listed as endangered to 59 adult breeding pairs this yearrdquo said Kenneth Jacobson Arizona Game and Fish Department bald eagle management coordinator

Report Arizona beer has an economic kick too in terms of jobs taxes

NORTH VALLEY ndash When Rob Fullmer the executive director of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild says ldquoeverything is improved by the presence of a breweryrdquo hersquos talking about the economic buzz it brings and not the alcoholic kind

ldquoAnytime you can put a business between two breweries yoursquoll see a much more foot traffic in that area and yoursquoll see a real benefit to your employeesrdquo said Fullmer ndash not to mention ldquothe lunches and happy hoursrdquo

New industry-generated numbers appear to back up that claim that beer brings economic growth and prosperity

A recent report by the National Beer Wholesalers Association said the beer industry in Arizona ndash from brewers to drivers to bartenders ndash had an economic output of almost $43 billion in 2014 generated more than $800 million in federal and state taxes

and was responsible for 38627 jobs in the state

ldquoArizonarsquos beer industry is doing slightly better than mostrdquo said the associationrsquos chief economist Lester Jones ldquoItrsquos marginally above the national average in terms of its economic output wages jobs ndash which is not a bad place to be at allrdquo

With a gross state product in Arizona of just over $279 billion in 2013 according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis the beer industry accounted for roughly 15 percent of the total GSP Arizonarsquos beer industry had the 21st highest economic output in the country and was 19th among the states in terms of wages and jobs according to the report

Nationally the beer industry generated 175 million jobs in a US labor force close to 149 million and had an economic impact of nearly $25258 billion on a gross domestic product of $173 trillion

The study looked at the three

traditional tiers of brewing wholesaling and retailing and accounted for everything from the cost of equipping breweries to the salaries for truck drivers who deliver it and bartenders who serve it

The report said that for every retail dollar of beer sold in Arizona the state and federal governments get nearly 36 cents in taxes In other words if a consumer pays $2 for a beer about 71 cents goes to the government

Arizona was slightly below the national average of a 40 percent tax burden Despite the bite by the government industry officials say the business is booming in Arizona particularly among local craft breweries and craft beers

Fullmer said Arizona is a ldquohotrdquo for brewing in more ways than one

ldquoI think Arizonarsquos numbers are better than what the NBWA is reportingrdquo Fullmer said ldquoThey underrepresent the craft beer industry which has been particularly strong in the past few yearsrdquo

That was echoed by Chip Mulala who goes by the title minister of craft beer at SanTan Brewing

ldquoThere has been a tremendous amount of growth in the Arizona craft beer scene in the past few yearsrdquo Mulala said in an email

ldquoJust five years ago there were less than 20 breweries in the state and today there is almost 60rdquo his email said ldquoI believe most are flourishing and experiencing solid growthrdquo

The beer industry has gotten large enough in Arizona to have its presence felt at the state Capitol Gov Doug Ducey in March signed SB 1030 dubbed the Arizona Beer Bill that raises the production cap for craft brewers above 200000 barrels of beer a year and lets them operate more retail shops under the same microbrewer license

ldquoSanTan was very involved in passing SB1030 the Arizona Beer Bill earlier this year The central tenet to this bill was jobs jobs jobsrdquo Mulala said

ldquoEvery drop of beer that is locally produced creates jobs in this market and a community that can be self-sufficient and rely less on beers imported from other states and countries will be a stronger community as a wholerdquo Mulala said

And Fullmer sees more opportunity for the state going forward

ldquoWersquore going to be known as a beer state because we have similar growth rates as big states and wersquove done so despite having only one large metropolitan city and having a desert-like geography which is specialrdquo he said

While the 81914 flood was unusually severe flooding is always a possibility during monsoon season Paul Schickel of Daisy Mountain Fire counsels everyone to plan ahead and be prepared

ldquoYou never really know what yoursquore going to getrdquo Schickel said regarding monsoon storms

Schickel is the Program Organizer of the DMFD Community Emergency Response Team CERT training helps residents prepare for emergencies and be ready to evacuate if necessary or shelter in place for three days Schickel encourages everyone to keep three daysrsquo worth of provisions on hand enough for themselves their family and their pets

In addition to non-perishable food and bottled water Schickel recommends that residents put together a kit that includes things that would be difficult to replace or go without in an emergency medication eyeglasses and similar items Another recommendation is having hard copies of insurance policies family records and other important documents available so that in an emergency needed information can be quickly accessed A flash drive that holds copies of important documents is also

recommended as it is easily portable and can be opened on most computers

For additional flood protection DMFD is offering free sandbags at the DMFD Station 141 located at 43814 N New River Road Residents can stop by and get sandbags during normal business hours

Maricopa County Flood Control District also stresses the importance of being prepared in case of an emergency On their Web site wwwfcdmaricopagov the Flood Control District encourages residents tobull Purchase flood insurance for

their propertybull Stay informed and provide

input on flood control projects and studies in your community

bull Follow safety guidelines during storms and floods especially when near flooded washes and riverbeds

bull Adhere to regulations when building or maintaining property in a floodplain

For residents who may be living in a floodplain the Flood Control District offers information on proper permits and ways to improve property safety in the case of a flood

ldquoWe encourage residents to obtain floodplain use permits so FCD can work with them to make sure they locate or move barriers on their property out of a potential water flowrdquo three Flood Control District staff members wrote in response to a request for information ldquoWe can also help educate them about anchoring tanks and buildings elevate objects etc The Floodplain Management amp Services Division at FCD has proper permitting brochures and the FEMA Floodsmart

site is also a great resource with permitting information FCD will visit areas and talk with people to guide themrdquo

The Maricopa County Flood Control District also offers information on flood clean-up See information and recommendations for residents at wwwfcdmaricopagovcitizen

The damage caused by last yearrsquos flood is still evident in some areas of the New River Wash Downed trees

and erosion mark where the flood swept through The damage is however reported to be on the surface

ldquoOverall our understanding is that there were no significant changes to the river that warranted us to redelineate the floodplainrdquo Flood Control District staff noted ldquoDesert rivers naturally move a lot of sediment during a rain event some areas were scoured and sediment was deposited in other areas The extent of the water

was consistent with our existing floodplain delineation That means that overall the water went where we thought it would gordquo

The Flood Control District doesnrsquot specifically handle damage to bridges such as the bridges on New River Road and the I-17 Frontage Road but they did note that according to their data the bridges were not damaged

Flash floods are notoriously unpredictable Having provisions stored and having an emergency plan in place helps residents be prepared for the unexpected

ldquoWe want to get people as involved and active as we canrdquo Schickel who organizes CERT training noted

ADOT testing wrong-way vehicle detectors

PHOENIX ndash Wrong-way driving continues to be an issue in Arizona In an effort to alert drivers trying to enter a freeway going the wrong way the Arizona Department of Transportation has added new vehicle detection devices with blinking red lights at three Valley freeways including the I-17 and Carefree Highway

ADOT is testing these wrong-way vehicle detection devices as part of an ongoing research effort to reduce the risk of wrong-way crashes The detectors manufactured by TAPCO Inc were installed this month along the northbound Interstate 17 exit to Carefree Highway (east side of the interchange) the eastbound Interstate 10 exit at Ray Road and the northbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Thunderbird Road

The TAPCO system includes radar and camera sensors designed to detect wrong-way vehicles on freeway exit ramps When a vehicle is detected the system activates blinking red LED lights on two ldquowrong wayrdquo signs to try to warn the driver theyrsquore traveling the wrong way During the testing stage the system also is set up to send email messages with photos to notify ADOT staff and the Department of Public Safety

that a wrong-way vehicle is detected

The three locations where the system is being tested were selected based on previous research including figures from the Department of Public Safety on emergency calls reporting wrong-way vehicles

The testing of these detectors is among several steps ADOT has taken in efforts to reduce the risk of crashes involving wrong-way drivers on state highways includingbull A team of ADOT

engineering consultants is conducting a study of wrong-way vehicle detection and warning systems including a review of potential countermeasures The study is scheduled for completion in September

bull In June 2014 as part of

a pilot project ADOT crews installed larger and lowered ldquowrong wayrdquo and ldquodo not enterrdquo signs at six freeway interchanges in the Phoenix area Large white pavement arrows pointing in the correct direction of travel also were added on the exit ramps at those interchanges The pavement arrows are outlined with raised pavement markers that include red reflectors pointed toward a wrong-way vehicle

bull More than 500 of the larger and lowered ldquowrong wayrdquo and ldquodo not enterrdquo signs have since been installed along dozens of state highway off-ramps In one project earlier this year ADOT used approximately $300000 in available highway maintenance funding to manufacture and install larger signs as well as pavement arrows along approximately 90 off-ramps around the state The work was completed in June 2015

bull The agency has adopted the larger and lowered wrong-way signs as a design standard meaning the larger signs also will be installed on additional off-ramps when highway projects include sign replacements

ldquoStraight Outta Comptonrdquo goes even further exploring the lives of these men later in their career showing Dr Dre make the choice to align with Suge Knight watching Ice Cube writing the script that would eventually become the movie

ldquoJoy arises through heartfelt compromises in the presence of patience and the absence of apathyrdquo These are heartfelt words by local artist and poet Kim Walker Kim has discovered throughout her life the metaphoric lessons of the natural world To honor the energy and insights Nature offers Kim composes a short poem for each of her original paintings

Beginning her life in Grand Rapids Michigan Kimrsquos family moved to Arizona when she was 16 years old She has always loved the creative process of experimenting with painting techniques and collecting leaves flowers and objects from nature to include in her work For a long time the process was a hobby But that all changed during the time Kim found herself driving her nine-year-old son a child prodigy to a local community college to attend classes She decided to enroll herself as well to pursue an art degree Kim completed her BFA in Painting from Arizona State University in 2001 She received her first gallery representation even before she completed her

degree in 2000 Another turning point came

for Kim during her last year of her degree program with her motherrsquos passing For the first time swallowed in grief Kim found herself seeking the solitude and nurturing of nature During long hikes and periods of reflection she came to realize what many busy and nurturing women ultimately come to terms with she had never taken the time to really be quiet spending time in reflection Kim described it as ldquoI found myself going alone for long periods of time on hikes as a way to assuage my grief I always loved nature breezes began to feel like arms around me colors were brighter and full of joy the sun warmed my heart restoring hope and promise to my spiritrdquo This was the beginning of a strong commitment to integrate the elements of nature in her paintings Kim wanted to share that inspiration with others

Today Kim works from her home studio in Arizona as well as a studio at her familyrsquos second home in Baja The contrast of the dry desert surroundings with the peaceful ocean beaches

continually inspire her both are balancing and energetic in their own ways Kim is consistently entering juried exhibitions as well as showing her work in galleries and invitational exhibits A complete listing is on her Web site wwwkimwalkerartcom She founded a Facebook business page where she posts images and exhibit notices wwwfacebookcomkimwalkerart

NEW RIVER ndash Country rocker Cody Canada and his new band The Departed will be playing at the Roadrunner on Thursday Aug 27

Formerly the front man of Cross Canadian Ragweed Canada is now touring with his Ragweed band mate Jeremy Plato to promote The Departedrsquos new album lsquoHippieLovePunkrsquo Canada fronted Cross Canadian Ragweed from 1998-2010 The band sold over a million albums in that time Picking up where Cross Canadian Ragweed left off The Departed first performed in December 2010

ldquoWersquore doing about 170 shows a yearrdquo Canada said referring to The Departed band ldquoWe do a lot of the old Ragweed songs We have a lot of songs to pick fromrdquo

Canada calls The Departed a ldquocountry-influenced rock bandrdquo

ldquoAmericana is really what everybody calls our genre of musicrdquo Canada said ldquoIrsquove always thought it was a rock and roll bandrdquo

As a songwriter Canada takes his inspiration from the world around him

As a father to two little boys he like many parents was frightened after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School He noted that he thought about the differences in his life and his sonsrsquo how parents have to worry about sending their kids to school now He channeled some of his grief into songwriting focusing on writing songs with a ldquotake care of each otherrdquo message

An Oklahoma native Canada made his mark as a musician as a teenager hitting it big after playing throughout Texas Canada has toured in Arizona multiple times The 2015 tour with The Departed has played all over the Southwest with

shows in California Texas New Mexico Nevada and Arizona as well as throughout the Midwest

In concert The Departed plays a mix of styles and songs

ANTHEM ndash The Anthem Community Council is now accepting applications to serve on the Anthem Youth Advisory Council for the 2015-16 term The advisory board for youth in grades 7-12 is entering its second year Applications are due by Sept 8 at 5 pm

An initiative of the ACC Board of Directors the inaugural AYAC group was formed with a number of goals in mind including a focus on creating positive and fun activities and experiences for Anthem youth First seated in the fall of 2014 the AYAC organized two Teen Movie Night events volunteered at ACC-sponsored special events and attended regular meetings where they discussed issues facing todayrsquos Anthem teens

ldquoThe youth council has accomplished much in the

grouprsquos inaugural year from volunteering to hosting teen events to providing critical youth input on community issuesrdquo said ACC Community Executive Officer Jenna Kohl ldquoThe energy passion and leadership demonstrated by this talented group of Anthem students set the stage for future AYAC members and we look forward to the continued interest in and success of the program in the years to comerdquo

The youth council will be comprised of 13 Anthem youth representing a cross section of age groups and schools within the community plus one Student Body Officer of Boulder Creek High School ACC Board directors the community executive officer and staff advise the group

To apply students must complete a formal application

Strike up the band Veterans parade back on

ANTHEM ndash The Daisy Mountain Veterans 2015 parade that was previously cancelled is back on The parade is set for Saturday Nov 7 at 10 am

A decade-long tradition in Anthem the parade honors the service of veterans far and near The 2015 parade was originally cancelled after organizer Mary Ann Derryberry who had been running the parade since its inception announced plans to step down for family reasons At that time no one had stepped up to take on the role of parade organizer Derryberry sent an email to sponsors in July noting

that for several years the parade team had been looking for help and no one had taken on the role After that email was sent Lance Sherwood contacted Daisy Mountain Veterans with an offer of help for the organization of the event The parade is now back on Derryberry and other long-time volunteers will help the new volunteers in their roles

A meeting was held on Saturday Aug 15 to discuss what needs to be done to fast-track the parade organization since the planning is starting late this year Most of the day-of-the-parade volunteers are set

to go The parade team is working on funding and co-chairs for parade committees

Many of the previous parade participants are available to be in the 2015 parade

ldquoI think we can get enough together to have a really nice paraderdquo Mary Ann Derryberry said in the Aug 15 meeting

ldquoItrsquos just about getting the word out to the communityrdquo Lance Sherwood noted in the meeting

ANTHEM ndash Fred Martinez of Anthem won a gold medal on Aug 12 at the International Weightlifting Federation Masters World Cup in Dallas

Martinez competed in the 40-44-years-old age division and the 62 kilogram (136 pound) weight class In the snatch portion of the contest Martinez had three lifts of 75 kilograms (165 pounds) 80 kilograms (176 pounds) and 85 kilograms (187 pounds) missing the last lift by an inch In the clean-and-jerk portion of the event he lifted 85 kilograms (187 pounds) 90 kilograms (198 pounds) and 100 kilograms (220 pounds) missing the last lift by an inch

Phoenix Water awarded drought resiliency grant

PHOENIX ndash The City of Phoenix Water Department has been awarded $300000 in Federal funds for an innovative proposal aimed to proactively store water and build the cityrsquos long-term drought resiliency

The funding provided by the US Bureau of Reclamation will be used for a new well that will directly inject city water supplies into the local aquifer for long term storage During times of drought the well can be switched to recover and pump water supplies that were previously stored

ldquoThe ASR well will recharge approximately 2400 gallons per minute into the aquifer or 34 million gallons per dayrdquo said the cityrsquos hydrologist Gary

Gin ldquoOnce this project is completed in July 2017 the city will be able to store multiple water sources within this wellrdquo

ldquoAs a desert city Phoenix knows the value of water and its importance for our futurerdquo said the cityrsquos Water Director Kathryn Sorensen ldquoThis project provides additional resiliency for times of drought and surface water shortagerdquo

The US Bureau of Reclamationrsquos WaterSMART Drought Resiliency Project Grants Program announced the selection on Aug 12 for 23 projects to receive grants totaling $52 million
