CHINO HILLS HIGH SCHOOL SPIRITLEADERS AUDITIONS 2018-2019 Thank you for showing interest in the Chino Hills High Cheer and Song program formally known as CHHS Spiritleaders. Below is information about the tryout process and a brief overview of our program. I. SPIRITLEADER PROGRAM INFORMATION a. The Chino Hills Cheer and Song practice clinic will be held April 18 th and April 19 th at Chino Hills High School. This clinic is mandatory and will prepare candidates for tryouts. Candidates are also responsible for learning the material for the actual tryout that will be held on Friday April 20 th , by appointment. b. There are 5 evaluations in this packet to be returned no later than Wednesday, March 28th. First, fill out your portion and include a business size envelope for the adult to use. Please be sure to ask 5 teachers to fill out the evaluation forms. Teachers are instructed to place evaluation forms in a box in the office of CHHS or return to Mrs. MacKay via district mail at Townsend Junior High. ALL EVALUATIONS MUST COME FROM YOUR CURRENT TEACHERS! Evaluations must go to: current English, Math, PE/Sport (if in PE/sport at CHHS or junior high) and 2 of your choice. If you are currently in cheer or song at CHHS you must give one to your coach. c. Turn in the personal information sheet, personal evaluation of skills, and parent permission form with your picture attached. This is to be turned in by student on March 28 th at 2:15-3:15 or 6-7pm outside MPR. d. Have your counselor fill out the grade check and absence report. Your grades (GPA) and attendance are a part of your total score and a part of the final decision. Your counselor can hand this back to you or submit via district mail to Mrs. MacKay at Townsend Junior High. e. All candidates must have a physical completed by April 17th. You must download the athletic physical packet from the CHHS Athletics website to take to your physical and turn in with your other forms. You must also do your athletic registration on athleticclearance.com. These are good for a year. Cheerleading and Song leading are highly specialized and demanding physical activities. Your safety, as well as the safety of others depends upon your good health and abilities. You will not be able to do May/summer activities until it is turned in. No exceptions! f. The results for tryouts will be available Monday, April 23 rd . All those making the squad will be notified via email. The tryout results will also be available on the school website by tryout number or on our Instagram @husky_spirit_2018. All those making the squad will be invited to a team social and fitting that afternoon April 23 rd 3:00-7:00pm so they may have a chance to get acquainted with their new team/coaches. If you unfortunately are not chosen to be a part of the CHHS Spirit leaders program you will be notified via email but highly encouraged to continue to work on your skills and try out for the following season. g. Thank you for showing interest in the Chino Hills High Cheer and Song program formally

known as CHHS Spiritleaders. Below is information about the tryout process and a brief

overview of our program.

I. SPIRITLEADER PROGRAM INFORMATION a. The Chino Hills Cheer and Song practice clinic will be held April 18th and April 19th at Chino Hills High

School. This clinic is mandatory and will prepare candidates for tryouts. Candidates are also responsible for learning the material for the actual tryout that will be held on Friday April 20th, by appointment.

j. This information packet is designed to answer questions about song and cheer and provide you with necessary information you need to participate in tryouts. k. There are eight squads: Varsity Cheer Game, Varsity Song Game, Junior Varsity Cheer Game, Junior Varsity Song Game, Varsity Cheer Comp(CIF/details in another section), Varsity Song Comp, Junior Varsity Cheer Comp(CIF/details in another section), and Junior Varsity Song Comp. The Varsity Cheer Squad is composed of students in grades 9-12. Varsity Song will also be composed of students from 9-12th grade. The numbers will vary according to the results of tryouts. Junior Varsity Cheer is for 9-11th grade only. Junior Varsity Song is for 9-11th grade only.

l. Students will be strongly encouraged to participate in various fundraising activities to help support the program.

m. Practices will be before/after school, sometimes weekends or during holiday breaks and work schedules, doctor appointments, haircuts, homework and life in general must be planned around cheer and song schedules. We work around coaches’ schedules. An explanation of the schedules will occur at the April 25th meeting. Crowd leading at football games, basketball games and other sport events as assigned are expected. It is a district policy that a student must attend school the day of an extracurricular event.

n. In May, June, July and August will have summer practices and summer camps. Try to plan family vacations during the month of early June. Dead period is May 20-June 9th. Spiritleaders keep up their skills individually at an all-star/gymnastics gym, studio, or fitness recreational center during this period of time.

o. Dates to be aware of-

• Team meeting with coaches and new squad members +Fittings (missing this can delay getting uniforms)-3-7pm Monday, April 23rd

• Mandatory Team Meeting- Spiritleader and Parent must attend April 25th @7pm

• May practices begin- 3:00-5:00pm MPR Cheer- May 2nd, May 9th, May 14th, May 16th.

Song-3-5pm MPR April 30, May 7, May 14

• Dead period is May 20th-June 9th-Mandatory dead period of practices.

• Summer practices begin but may be subject to change-They are listed here as a courtesy.

• Cheer-7:00am-10am-June 11-14, 19-21,26-28, July 2nd, July 9-11,23-24, 31-Aug 2, 7-9

• Song-6:30-9:30am-June 12-14, 18-20, 25-27, July 5-6, 9-11, 17-19-24-25, 31-Aug 2, August 7-9

Please ask questions via email! Don’t wait until the last minute and ruin

your chances because you misunderstood. II. SPIRITLEADER RESPONSIBILITIES

➢ Will attend all sports events and all competitions as scheduled (based on the team they make)

➢ Will attend all scheduled practices, which may include weekends/holidays

➢ Will attend all fundraising activities of the Spiritleader Booster Club ➢ Will attend Summer Camp (this is optional) and Summer Practices (required) ➢ Will be in proper uniform at all athletic and Spiritleader functions where a uniform is mandated

➢ Will participate in uniform check in at school on uniform days

➢ Will maintain a 2.0 GPA with no more than two U’s ➢ Will not be involved in any school activities that will interfere with Spiritleaders

➢ Will be the first to communicate to his/her coach and advisor about any schedule conflicts or

problems. One month advance notice, all year long, is required for excused absences.

III. FINANCES a. The Spiritleader Booster Club is an association of the parents of cheerleaders and songleaders

dedicated to the support of the Chino Hills Song/Cheer program. Spiritleader Boosters raise

money for such things as competitions, music and choreography, hire/pay coaches, provide

safety measures (mats and miscellaneous items) speakers, year-end banquet, etc. A great deal of

money must be raised. Once your paperwork is turned in, Spiritleader Boosters will be sending you an email with a form that will need to be returned by April 18th to clinics.

b. All fundraisers are strongly encouraged for all members of the song and cheer squads.

IV. TRYOUTS FORMAT-Cheer Game Squad, Song Game and Comp Squad a. You will attend 2 days of workshops and 1 final audition day. Workshops will take place April 18 th & 19th

from 3-6pm in the small or large gym. Auditions will take place April 20th by appointment 3:00-7:00pm. Tryouts may go past 7pm due to such things as taking time to let judges make comments and score each candidate appropriately.

b. Your performance throughout this 3day period will determine your placement on the team. A portion of your audition points will be based on your paperwork being turned in: grades, teacher evaluations, past performance (coach eval), attendance at school, meetings, and workshops, student turning in paperwork on time, along with attitude, working relationship, dependability, following directions, attentiveness, timeliness, learning skills, and overall work habits/skills. The other portion will be based on the physical areas of evaluation to include dance/cheer technique, dance style, advanced tricks, strength, coordination, flexibility, sharpness, placement, knowledge of the routine, jumps, ability to learn quickly, teaching ability, and showmanship. You will be evaluated from the first day we meet to the last day of auditions. Your total points will be divided by the number of scores to get an average. The judging panel will select all teams. Squad size and composition will be determined by the natural break in ability/points.

c. An applicant’s eligibility to participate in competition will be continually evaluated during the season, and be based on the individual’s dance, jump, flexibility and advanced trick technique. Being a part of CHHS Spiritleaders is a privilege, not a right, and a member’s participation in performances may be revoked at any time if the member fails to comply with all CHHS Spiritleaders rules and responsibilities.

d. Throughout the tryout process you will learn and be evaluated on the following material:

VARSITY CHEER

❖Standing Back Tuck/ Standing Double Back handspring and a round-off back handspring tuck

(minimum gymnastics highly recommended requirement). Points are awarded to those with more

advanced gymnastics skills.

❖Perform and execute an elite jump combination including but not limited to a Toe Touch, Pike,

Front Hurdler.

❖The ability to either fly, base, or back spot at an elite level. The coaching staff will make the

final decision of which position(s) your student tries out for and makes, based on the needs of the

team.

❖Sharp, consistent cheer/dance motions

❖Elite performance skills: eye contact, smile, enthusiasm, confidence, showmanship, ect.

❖GPA: minimum 2.0, 2.5 or above is preferred ❖Positive teacher recommendations- Good attitude – willing to take directions.

❖Crowd involvement and performance of tryout routine at an elite level during crowd leading

and performance of skills.

JUNIOR VARSITY CHEER

❖Standing back handspring and or round off back handspring (minimum gymnastics

requirement). Points are given to those with more advanced gymnastics skills.

e. DO NOT BE LATE! Please be early and begin warming up as soon as you get there. You must wear appropriate practice clothes (ex. Fitted shorts, a fitted top, a sports bra and cheer or running shoes/jazz shoes). Please wear blue, green, white or all three colors on the day of final audition. Absolutely NO JEWLERY OR PIERCINGS OF ANY KIND should be seen. All of your hair must be up in a tight ponytail with a rubber band (no scrunches’ or clamps). No gum is allowed. Please bring water. FAILURE TO FOLLOW ANY OF THE ABOVE DIRECTIONS WILL AFFECT YOUR OVERALL STANDING.

f. All decisions of placement and acceptance on the CHHS Team are FINAL. The Spiritleader Team staff will diligently and carefully evaluate each candidate and make their decisions accordingly. CHHS Administrators support this.
