VINCI St. Modwen, in partnership with Covent Garden Market Authority, is celebrating the latest milestone in the redevelopment project at Nine Elms: the Food Exchange.

This is a workspace, kitchen space and food culture venue for everyone and everything to do with food. The Food Exchange forms the first chapter of London’s Food Quarter – a vibrant food industry campus and a serious food destination.

The Food Exchange is partnering with Mission Kitchen to create London’s largest shared kitchen space, alongside co-working space, for London’s small and ambitious food makers. Already there are ice cream companies Oppo and Wheyhey!, granola makers Spoon Cereal, coconut water aficionados CocoPro and Young Foodies, a food business consultancy.

The building has already been recognised by the Mayor’s Good Growth Fund, receiving a £2.9m award in partnership with Mission Kitchen, which will further

enable the Food Exchange to grow its businesses, empower its people and support the local community. It has also been given the London & BUILD Project Award for Best Commercial Design. If you are a food start-up or entrepeneur and are interested in working there, you can book a tour of the private studios, just email [email protected]. If you live locally, don’t miss the chance to see it for yourself at the LFA (see p.3).

Art Night is London’s largest free contemporary arts festival, transforming the city annually for one unforgettable night on 7 July 2018 with a series of artist’s projects in extraordinary locations across London.

Ralph Rugoff and the Hayward Gallery team have curated 12 artist projects inspired by the area, which will be along the trail, alongside special artist projects and events presented by local organisations, independent creatives and artist collectives.

Canadian born Tamara Henderson is New Covent Garden Market’s highlight for this year’s Art Night. Inspired by nature,

Tamara Henderson will respond to the Flower Market at New Covent Garden Market’s infrastructure with ‘Vision 3: Flowering Transition’, in the form of a choreography for 16mm film.

Tamara Henderson has had a prolific career, and exhibited at Glasgow International, dOCUMENTA (13), Serpentine Gallery’s 2017 Park Nights and Tate St. Ives. Art Night is free to all visitors.

ART NIGHT 2018

Tamara Henderson

Art Night is London’s largest free contemporary arts festival, transforming a different part of the city annually for one unforgettable night on 7 July 2018 with a series of artist’s projects in extraordinary locations along the South Bank.

Canadian born artist Tamara Henderson was New Covent Garden Market’s highlight for this year’s event.

Sponsored by VINCI St. Modwen and taking place on the only night that the Flower Market is closed, Henderson’s performance replaced the trading activity with a cast of eight characters. Constructed from materials found at the Flower Market, each character was conceived as a sculpture for the actors to wear in a choreographed procession through the specially lit Flower Market.

The characters derive from the life-cycle of the plants and flowers, their origins in seeds, earth and water, incorporating the daily activities of the Flower Market and its symbology and language.

Henderson herself featured in the performance operating a camera to film the event as the ‘eye’ witnessing the night’s activity.

Georgina Hill

Anna Skladmann’s installation Ghost In The Machine sits at the front of the Flower Market.

Skladmann has taken flowers from the market and set that against errors from her scanning machine. Her work explores how nature and the machine can work both with and against each other. This piece remains at the entrance to the Flower Market on Nine Elms lane, so you if you missed Art Night you can still see it for yourself.

In her sound installation, Hammer & Anvil: Stems, on the upper car park of the Flower Market, Georgina Hill reconstructed the 1970s Flower Market.

Listeners could hear field recordings and eyewitness accounts from the old market. The work conveys the changing nature of the area, with its many embedded architectural and personal histories, and reflects on the evolution of New Covent Garden Market.

Art Night Open consisted of satellite events happening around the main featured art installations. Özge Topçu’s work Agora was inspired by the idea of the marketplace.

Topçu engaged with the local community through a series of workshops at the ROSE community centre, where she asked the participants to come up with designs for alternative public spaces which can be built from one of the key components of the market place – the market box.

Built during Art Night, the new structure was used as a social meeting point for those walking the trail. www.ozgetopcu.com | Instagram @ozgetopcuart

An Illustration of the Brand New Covent Garden Market

WHALE OF A TIME

In June a beautiful 22 metre-wide mural was completed on the playground wall of St. George’s Primary School in Battersea, thanks to funding and support from New Covent Garden Market site developers - VINCI St. Modwen.

This project is the culmination of a much wider Cultural Education Challenge entitled Cultivate running across Wandsworth and the UK, in which artists are introduced to schools to work with young people and to provide exposure to creative thinking and career opportunities.

Artist Mr Dane has been working with St George’s Primary School for the past two years, having first been introduced to them as part of VINCI St. Modwen’s Edible Avenue programme.

The image is a real life-size female whale set against a blue sea backdrop. The female whale is exactly the same length as the wall of the playground ‘pen’ at St. George’s.

A specialised paint was used which works to absorb CO2. As the wall is so large, its absorbency equals approx 30 kg of CO2.
