Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to another great school year at Elkhorn GRANDVIEW Middle School! I hope

all of you had an enjoyable summer. Elkhorn has a tradition of strong academics and

activities and we are as committed as ever to our core mission of helping each and every

student experience growth academically, socially, and emotionally.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL School for all students will begin on Wednesday, August 17 at 8:10 a.m. An

alternative schedule will be designed the first two days to give extra time for orientation

activities for all students. Building tours, transitional activities and an extended lunch period

will be a part of this orientation.

All students will enter the building upon arrival (not before 7:40am) and report

directly to the gym. If you feel your child needs additional time in the building prior to school

starting, please give us a call to discuss those concerns.

The first day will function as a normal school day and will end at 3:20 p.m. Lunches

will be served and buses will run. If you have questions about bus transportation, please

call Chief School Bus service, (402) 392-2144 or Central Office, (402) 289-2579.

Start & Ending Time

The official school day starts at 8:10am and ends at 3:20pm. There is morning

supervision on duty starting at 7:40am and students will head to their first class at

8:00am.

Front Entrance

At approximately 8:15am, the security system will activate and any student, parent,

or visitor needing entrance into the building will need to push the “Video Call Button”

to alert the office that you are requesting entry. An office staff member will then

trigger the door to open for entry.

FOOTBALL & VOLLEYBALL (7th & 8th graders only) o On the first day of school, coaches will conduct an informational meeting that

students should attend if they are interested in playing that sport. These meeting will

be after school and will last until 3:50pm.

o On the second day of school (Thursday, August 18, will be the first official practice.

Regular practices will be from 3:30-5:00pm. Coaches will announce the date of a

parent meeting after practices have begun.

o Students participating in sports must have their physicals turned in before they can

begin practicing. For FB and VB, it is imperative that you turn your physical in at Back

to School 101 on August 10.

o EPS will begin charging admission at middle school athletic events. Admission will be

adults=$3 and students=$2. Purchasing and activity pass will give you free admission to

ALL elkhorn public school activities (middle & high school). You may purchase activity

passes at Back to School 101 or on-line. Purchase Activity Passes On-line Here.

*NEW* STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP Due to increased concerns with traffic stacking up on 180th street, we are changing

our drop-off and pick-up routes. This year, parent will have the option to drop-off and

pick-up in the front OR in the parking lot in the back of the building. Remember, the

access road that runs directly in front of the building starts as two-way traffic so

vehicles may turn left when exiting the parking lot and then changes to a one-way

road from West to East as you pass in front of the building. For parents who plan to

arrive for pick-up before 3:20pm, if these areas are full, we encourage parents to line

up on Grand Ave in front of the track and continue around the curve onto 176th. This

entire route has a sidewalk up to Ames Ave which allows for safe, curbside pickup. If

you pick-up at the corner of 176th & Ames Ave, students would only be walking 2-3

blocks. Just an FYI - The pick-up line after school will not start moving until about

3:25pm.

*Important Note: All student pick-up needs to be curb side. Students will not be

allowed to cross traffic to get to their ride. This is a safety issue and will assist in

keeping traffic moving.

*Parking is not allowed on Grand Ave directly in front of the school. The road is not

wide enough to accommodate parking and 2-way traffic.

Bus loading zone will also be in the front. We will have signs posted to designate the

bus loading zone.

OPEN HOUSE/CURRICULUM NIGHT - August 18 Times for each grade level are listed below. Open House provides all parents the chance to

meet teachers and learn about curriculum opportunities and team procedures. See

attached flyer for specific times for each grade level.

COMMUNICATION We work, as a staff, to ensure that students and parents are informed. All mass

communications will be send via email through School Messenger. Make sure you have an

updated email address on file with the school. Please note, and look for, the following

venues of communication during the course of the year:

Newsletters every month – emailed via School Messenger and on the EGMS website

(elkhornweb.org).

PowerSchool – online access to your child’s gradebook in each subject. Parent

access will be activated on August 26.

Parent communication meetings – monthly.

Parent Booster Club – sign up opportunities will be at Back to School 101 and Open

House. You can also visit this link to learn more and sign up to help in one of several

ways: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/egmsboosters 4 ½ week progress reports sent home requiring a parent/guardian signature.

9 week report cards mailed home.

Parent-Teacher conferences – October 18, 19 and February 15, 16.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS Seventh grade students are required to have a physical exam as part of the entrance

into 7th grade. This physical also allows students to participate in athletics. All 7th graders

must provide evidence of 1 dose of Tdap (must contain Pertussis booster) before attending

classes this fall:

Please see the attached staff list in order to familiarize yourself with your child’s

teachers. We encourage you to contact teachers directly if you have any concerns about

your student’s classroom performance.

One of our goals every year is to get you, the parents, involved in your child’s

education. Middle School is not a time to be pulling back. In fact, research will show that it

is a critical time for parents to be involved and active in their child’s life. They may act like

they are pulling away from you, but in reality they need your guidance and support more

than ever. We encourage you to visit with our parent booster club at Back to School 101

next week to see how you can get involved and support your child’s school!

All of us at EGMS are dedicated to serving you and your child. As the year

progresses, I encourage you to call and talk with those who might be able to help you the

most. If your question deals with in-class events, please ask to speak with the teacher. If it

deals with the overall program, curriculum or activities, please call the administration.

Myself and the entire staff at EGMS are committed to helping your child experience

academic, social and emotional growth this year. With your support and involvement your

child will learn! If you have any questions, at any time, don’t hesitate to call us at 289-9399.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Tomjack, Principal

From the Nurse…

~ Physical and Immunization Requirements ~

Nebraska law requires that all school children have a physical examination upon entry into school, at seventh

grade, and when transferring from an out-of-state school. Students must provide proof of a visual evaluation to

include testing for amblyopia, strabismus, internal and external eye health and visual acuity upon entry into

school and when transferring from an out-of-state school. The law also requires your child be immunized and

provide proof of immunization before attending classes. All 7th grade students are required to have a Tdap

vaccine. Please visit the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (link below) which outlines

specific vaccine requirements.

~ Medication for the 2016-2017 School Year ~

If your student requires any medication (over-the-counter and/or prescription) while at school, each medication

must have a Medication Authorization form (link below) signed by the parent and a physician, before we can

administer. All medications must be unexpired and provided in the original packaging and/or pharmacy

container. For prescription medication, please only provide a maximum of 30 day supply at a time.

All medication must be dropped off in the office by a parent or guardian.

Please do not send any medications with your student.

~ Students with Asthma, Severe Allergies, Diabetes, and/or Seizures ~
