Buffalo Bills photoWatervliet native George ‘Butch’ Byrd played seven seasons for the BuffaloBills. His 40 interceptions rate as a franchise best. Five times he wasnamed as an AFL All-Pro player.

Ken Baker (Hoosick Falls/Cambridge)

Ken Baker built powerful football programs at both

Hoosick Falls and Cambridge.

Baker posted a 151-61-6 record and his teams won

four sectional championships and 11 league or division

titles, including 10 in the Northern-Adirondack League

from 1980 to 1995. His 1992 Cambridge team, after stop-

ping Watervliet’s Section 2 record-setting win streak,

defeated Saranac Lake for a regional championship, and

his 1993 club reached the New York State semifinals.

Ken’s top Cambridge teams were ranked 2nd (1992,

Class C-D), 6th (1993, C), 9th (1995, C), and 10th (1994,

C) in the state, and his 1981 Hoosick Falls team was

ranked 25th (small schools).

He was inducted into the New York State Football Hall

of Fame.

Joe Burke (Bishop Maginn/1979)

Joe Burke was a three-year starter in football, basket-

ball and baseball at Bishop Maginn.

In football, he was named the McDonald’s Corporation

Co-Player of the Year and Section II Defensive Player of

the Year in 1978, and DeNooyer Chevrolet Player of the

Year in 1977. Joe was consensus All-Albany and All-

Area as an offensive and defensive back in 1977-78, as

selected by the Times Union, Schenectady Gazette and

Troy Record. He was team captain in 1978 when the

Griffins won the first Section II Super Bowl and were

ranked No. 2 in New York State.

Joe received a full athletic scholarship to Rutgers Uni-

versity, where he won three letters as a running back and

kick returner. After dominating the semipro Empire and

Eastern leagues for four years as the leagues’ leading

rusher (with over 5,000 yards) and scorer and being

named National Semi Pro MVP, Joe signed as a free

agent with the Dallas Cowboys and played with the New

York Jets in 1987.

He has been a high school football coach for 27 years,

including five years as head coach at Albany High School

and 22 years as an assistant at Bishop Maginn. He was

named the head coach at Christian Brothers Academy

earlier this year.

George “Butch” Byrd (LaSalle Institute/1960)

George “Butch” Byrd played eight years in the Ameri-

can Football League and the National Football League,

and was named All-Pro five times. He is the Buffalo Bills’

all-time interception leader with 40 and ranked 15th on

the all-time NFL interception list for cornerbacks. He was

drafted by both the Buffalo Bills of the AFL and the Dallas

Cowboys of the NFL in 1964, and played for the Bills for

six seasons (starting all 84 games), including their 1964

and 1965 championship years.

Butch was selected to the Bills’All-Time team in both

1984 and 2009. He also played for the Denver Broncos in

1971 and 1972. Butch attended LaSalle from 1956

through 1960, where he was named to the All-Troy foot-

ball offensive team for all four years, and to the All-Troy

defensive team three years. He also named to the All-

Troy basketball and baseball teams twice. Butch was

inducted into the LaSalle Alumni Hall of Fame in 2003.

He attended Boston University from 1960 through

1964. At BU, he was selected to the All-East team as an

offensive back and was inducted into the Boston Univer-

sity Hall of Fame in 1985. Butch was also inducted into

the Capital District Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Dick Cassiano (Albany/1936)

Dick Cassiano won All-American status in the 1930s

as part of the University of Pittsburgh’s “Dream Backfield”.

Cassiano’s climb to stardom started at Albany High

School where, at 135 pounds, he played end until mid-

way through his sophomore year. Moving to left halfback,

the honor student and senior class president only played

in one losing game at Albany while posting undefeated

seasons in his junior and senior years, winning.

Cassiano moved on to the University of Pittsburgh on

a scholarship where he won national recognition playing

under Coach Sutherland who in 15 seasons amassed a

record of 111 wins, 20 defeats and 12 ties. Cassiano

played left halfback in Pittsburgh’s acclaimed “Dream

Backfield” with Curly Stebbins, Johnny Chickerneo and

best friend All-American, Marshall Goldberg. Cassiano

himself gained All-American status after being hailed as

the hero of the Rose Bowl in 1939. Dick also played

against Fordham’s legendary Vince Lombardi.

After college, he was drafted in the sixth round of the

1940 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers, and then fol-

lowed Coach Sutherland to play football for the Brooklyn

Dodgers. After a short stint in the pros, his playing days

ended with injury in World War II where he served in the

Navy. While in the Navy, he became close friends with

President Gerald Ford.

Tom Ciaccio (Gloversville/1988)

Tom Ciaccio, who was the 1987 New York State

Class A Player of the year, graduated from Gloversville

as the state’s all-time leading passing yardage leader,

with 5,454 yards. He also passed for 45 touchdowns and

rushed for 16 more. During his senior season, Tom com-

pleted 176 of 264 passes for 2,379 yards and his Huskies

went 10-0.

Tom earned a full athletic scholarship to the College of

Holy Cross, where was the starting quarterback for three

years, leading the Crusaders to a 30-2-1 record, throwing

for 8,603 yards and 72 touchdown passes, and had a

62% completion percentage; his overall quarterback rat-

ing of 142.3 ranked him 10th alltime in 1992 on the

NCAA Division 1 list. As a senior, he was named first-

team All-American, Patriot.

League MVP, ECAC Division 1AA Player of the Year,

George “Bulger” Lowe Award winner as New England’s

Offensive Player of the Year, and the 1992-93 New Eng-

land Colleges Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year. As

a sophomore, Tom threw for 449 yards and five touch-

downs against Villanova in his first game, and was

named ESPN’s Player of the Week.

Tom played one season with the Helsinki Roosters of

the European Football League, where he passed for 32

touchdowns and 3,106 yards. He returned to the United

States and signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona

Cardinals in 1994.

Joe Cocozzo (Mechanicville/1988)

Joe Cocozzo has done it all on every level of football.

At Mechanicville High School, he earned All-State honors

as an offensive lineman in 1987, and was named Tom

Lemming’s No. 1 New York State recruit and to the All-

East team. He was all-league for three years, as well as

being honored as Division I/II Player of the Year in 1987.

At the University of Michigan, after being redshirted his

freshman year, Joe started 32 of his last 33 games for the

Wolverines. Smart, strong and feted for his intimidating

style, he earned All-Big Ten and All-America honors as a

right guard; Joe was a member of five Big Ten champi-

onship teams that appeared in four Rose Bowl games.

Upon graduation, Cocazzo was a third-round (64th

overall) draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1993. He

started at right guard from 1993 through 1997, including

three playoff games and the 1995 Super Bowl.

Leroy Collins (Hudson/1995)

Leroy Collins set the Section II career and single-sea-

son rushing record at Hudson, leading the Bluehawks to

the state championship game in 1994.

Collins, one of eight siblings, was severely injured in a

car accident at the age of 6 and was not supposed to be

able to walk again. However, after a long rehabilitation

and recovery, he was able to play first Pop Warner foot-

ball, followed by successful stints at Hudson, Alfred State

College, and the University of Louisville, followed by stints

with the Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars.

At Hudson, he ran for 4,989 career rushing yards,

including 2,551 yards in his senior season. Collins moved

on to Alfred where he was named Junior College All-

American, setting school records in single-season rush-

ing and touchdowns. He was later named to the college’s

Athletic Hall of Fame.

After receiving his associates degree at Alfred, Leroy

went to Louisville where, in his single season, he ran for

1,228 yards, setting a single-game touchdown record and

was named Offensive Player of the Year, as well as win-

ning All-Conference USA first-team honors. He graduat-

ed with a bachelors degree from Louisville.

He was on the Washington Redskins’ 1999 training

camp roster and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 1999-2000

practice squad.

Bernie Cronin (Adirondack Chapter)

Bernie “Bun” Cronin was a football official for 43 years

with the Adirondack Chapter of Certified Football Offi-

cials, serving as the chapter’s interpreter for over 25

years. Heserved for many years on both the New York

State interpretation and rules committees.

Bernie was elected to the American Football Associa-

tion Hall of Fame in 2005, and to the Capital District

Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College

Hall of Fame in 1996. He was also a Merit Award winner

of the Adirondack Chapter in 1984.

He was captain and quarterback of the 1937 Hudson

Falls team. He was also captain and quarterback of the

Greenjackets semipro football team.

Dave DeCamilla (Hudson Falls/1966)

Dave DeCamilla was a four-year starter and a mem-

ber of the 1965 Hudson Falls team that went undefeated

and unscored upon. He was a team captain and an offen-

sive and defensive lineman for the Tigers.

After attending the United States Military Academy

where he started at linebacker and nose guard for the

plebe team, Dave transferred to the University of South

Carolina where he was a three-year starter at offensive

tackle. In 1970, he was team co-captain and received

Honorable Mention All-American honors; he also named

All-Atlantic Coast Conference (1969-70) and won the

Jacobs Blocking Trophy (1969), as well as leading the

Gamecocks to the ACC championship and a berth in the

1969 Peach Bowl. In 2009, he was elected as the All-Time

Team Offensive Tackle for the University of South Carolina.

Dom Denio (Capital District Chapter)

Dom Denio was a football official for 43 years and a

basketball official for 25 years. He served as president of

both the Capital District Football Officials Association and

the Capital District Basketball Officials Organization.

A 1938 graduate of Watervliet High School, Dom

played soccer and baseball, ran track and bowled. He

was a walk-on football player at St. Bonaventure Univer-

sity (he never played football before college) and

received a full scholarship; Dom graduated from St.

Bonaventure in 1942. He is a member of the St.

Bonaventure University Hall of Fame.

He taught business at LaSalle Institute from 1946 to

1959. While there, he coached football, basketball and

baseball. He coached George “Butch” Byrd who played

professional football for the Buffalo Bills and is also a

member of this initial Hall of Fame class. Dom also

taught business and coached football and baseball at

Linton from 1959 to 1981; while there, he coached NBA

player and coach Pat Reilly in football and baseball.

He is a member of Ed Picken Hall of Fame at Troy

High School, the LaSalle Institute Hall of Fame, the Emer-

ald Athletic Club Hall of Fame, and the Schenectady City

School District and Watervliet High School Halls of Fame.

Willard Doran (Capital District Chapter)

Willard Doran is a graduate of LaSalle Institute, Man-

hattan College and SUNY Albany. Will began his career as

a teacher in the Lansingburgh School District in the physi-

cal education department. He coached varsity basketball

for eight years, was principal of Knickerbacker Junior High

School for 13 years, and was the director of student devel-

opment at Hudson Valley Community College for 14 years.

While at LaSalle, he was captain of the football, baseball

and basketball teams. He was captain of the 1953-54

Manhattan College basketball team, a member of the Troy

All-City All-Time Basketball Team and a member of Ken

Norton’s All-Time Manhattan Basketball Team.

He officiated high school and local college football as

a member of the Capital District Football Officials Associ-

ation for 40 years.

He is a member of the LaSalle Athletic Hall of Fame,

the Emerald Club Athletic Hall of Fame, Lansingburgh

School System Hall of Fame, and the Friends of 112th

Street Hall of Fame.

Jim Duggan (Glens Falls/1973)

Jim Duggan was one of Section II’s most dominant ath-

letes in his years at Glens Falls before becoming a four-

year starter in the Southwest Conference and then one of

professional wrestling’s most famous stars. Jim won 10

varsity letters at Glens Falls — four in football, three in

track and field, two in wrestling, and one in basketball.

He was captain of the football team and won the

NYSPHSAA superheavyweight wrestling title in 1973, the

first state wrestling champion from Glens Falls. He also set

the school shot put record that still stands 37 years later.

He received a full scholarship to Southern Methodist

University, where he was a four-year starter in football,

serving as team captain in his senior year. Jim was

named to the All-Southwest Conference team and won

the Mike Kelsey Award for 110% effort.

After college, Jim played for the Atlanta Falcons

(1977) and the Toronto Argonauts (1978) of the Canadi-

an Football League. In his 31 years in professional

wrestling, as “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, he won the UWF

World Championship and was WWE King of Wrestling.

He wrestled in all 50 states, all Canadian provinces and

over 25 countries.

Chuck Dukes (Colonie/1989)

Chuck Dukes graduated from Colonie High School as

Section II’s all-time leading rusher and continued his suc-

cess at Boston College, where he was one of the nation’s

top running backs in his senior year.

At Colonie, Dukes ran for 3,369 yards, including 1,705

in his senior year, the most ever at the time in Section 2.

He also had the single-game rushing record of 343 yards

and the third-best single game with 302 yards. He scored

36 touchdowns in 1987-88, including 23 in his senior sea-

son, when he was named to the USA All-American team

and won New York State Junior Heisman and Empire

State Male Athlete of the Year honors. Chuck was chosen

as Player of the Year by the Times Union, Schenectady

Gazette and Troy Record in his senior year, and was also

named all-area by all three publications in his junior year.

His success continued in college. At Dean Junior Col-

lege, he ran for 2,256 yards in two seasons and scored

26 touchdowns. After receiving his associates degree,

Chuck transferred to Boston College where he rushed for

1,999 yards in just two years. As a senior, he set the

Boston College single-season rushing record with 1,387

yards; that year, he was the Big East rushing leader and

fourth nationally. He played in both the East/West Shrine

Classic, where he was named the game’s Outstanding

Offensive Player, and the Hula Bowl. In his senior year,

Chuck was named All-Big East and ECAC All-East, was

named a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, which is

awarded to the nation’s best running back. He also won

the Harry Agganis Award (outstanding college football

player in New England), George “Bulger” Lowe Award

(top offensive collegiate player in New England), and the

William J. Flynn Award (BC’s Most Valuable Player).

John Dunn (Taconic Hills/1974)

John Dunn was a two-way starter on the Taconic Hills

High School football team and New York State indoor

and outdoor shot put champion. He went on to play foot-

ball and Penn State and has been a strength coach in the

National Football League for nearly a quarter-century.

Dunn was a three-sport high school standout in foot-

ball, basketball and track and field. His shot put best of

62 feet, 11 inched set a Section II record that stood for 27

years. Dunn played on the offensive line playing guard

and tackle at Penn State and, in his senior year, was

named offensive co-captain as his Nittany Lions finished

fourth in the nation. In his four years at Penn State, he

played in four bowl games — Cotton (1974), Sugar

(1975), Gator (1976), and Fiesta (1977).

Bob Ford (University at Albany)

The architect of the University at Albany’s football pro-

gram, Bob Ford has established a solid reputation with

his positive attitude and a coaching philosophy that

instills loyalty among each member of his team and staff.

Ford, who has been UAlbany’s only head coach since

the program was reinstated after a 46-year absence, was

appointed in 1970. Since then, he has compiled a 37-year

varsity record of 232-147 as the Great Dane mentor, while

his 241 career victories ranks first among active NCAA

Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) head

coaches. His UAlbany teams own a 76-47 mark for a .618

winning percentage as a Division I FCS program.

He has been voted Northeast Conference coach of

the year three times. His Great Danes won NEC champi-

onships in 2002-03 and 2007-08. Ford, who served as

president of the American Football Coaches Association

to begin this decade, took Albany to the Division 1 level

in 1999, after the Great Danes won Eastern Football

Conference championships in 1997-98.

Ford, who has produced 12 All-America players and

103 all-conference selections at the FCS level, arrived in

the Capital Region in 1970 to start the first gridiron squad

at the University since 1924. After three seasons at the

club level, the program was upgraded to varsity status in

1973, and finished with a 72 record. One year later, the

Great Danes completed the school’s only undefeated

season with a 9-0 mark. Ford’s 1977 team reached the

NCAA Division III tournament, losing to eventual national

champion Widener in the semifinals.

According to a recent review, more than 100 coaches,

who have started their careers under Ford’s tutelage, are cur-

rently employed with 60 different high schools, colleges, and

professional teams from around the nation and the world.

Joe Grasso (Vincentian Institute/Bishop Maginn)

Joe Grasso has won seven league/divisional and two

Sectioj II in more than 30 years at Bishop Maginn and

Vincentian Institute.

Grasso has won 184 games, including the first Section

II Super Bowl in 1978; his Griffins also won the 1983

Super Bowl. They won league/divisional championships

in 1978, 1983, 1992, 1994, 2004, and 2008; his teams

also reached the Section II title game in 1992, 1993,

1994, 2000, and 2008.

He was the winner of the Capital District Chapter of

the National Football Foundation’s Service to Football

Award in 2004 and is an active member of the New York

State Football Coaches Association. Joe has been the

Big 10 conference treasurer, Section 2 Football Commit-

tee Representative, and Big 10 and Class A Football

Scheduler for over 30 years; he has been on the Section

2 Classification Committee for seven years.

Joe graduated from Cardinal McCloskey High School

in 1968. He was a three-year starter in baseball, and two-

year starter in both football and basketball.

Joe has been principal at Bishop Maginn since 1985;

he is the only varsity football head coach in New York

State who is school principal. He is the Diocesan Repre-

sentative to the Catholic High School Athletic Association.

Blase Iuliano (Saratoga Springs)

Blase Iuliano retired as the second most winning coach in

Section II football history and among the top 15 in victo-

ries in New York State history. Blase was coach at

Saratoga for 37 years, retiring in 2005 with a 223-1137

record. His Streaks made four appearances in the New

York State Regional and nine appearances in the Section

2 Super Bowl; they also won 13 league champi

onships and four Section II titles.

Since retiring at Saratoga, Blase has been an assistant

coach at Union College. He was named Coach of the

Year eight times; other honors include the National Foot-

ball Foundation Outstanding Service to Amateur Football

Award (1997), 3rd Age Award in Athletics (2005), and

induction into the Saratoga Springs City Hall of Fame

(2006) and Section 2 Wrestling Hall of Fame (2010).

Blase was Section 2 football chairman for five years, dur-

ing which sectional football was started. He was wrestling

coach for 13 years at Saratoga, including seven as head

coach. He has also been a wrestling official for 25 years

and officiated twice at the NCAA Division III tournament.

Blase was chosen for the 2010 Burnt Hills High School

Wrestling Hall of Excellence; at Burnt Hills, he was an

undefeated sectional wrestling champion.

Bud Kenyon (Hoosick Falls/ Guilderland/Greenwich)

Harold “Bud” Kenyon was one of Section II’s most

successful coaches, winning at both large and small

schools.

Bud, originally from Bristol, Vt., began his coaching

career in Oriskany (Section 3), posting a 13-3-1 football

record (his basketball and baseball teams combined for a

56-29 record). He moved to Hoosick Falls in 1959, where

he introduced 11-man football and had a 23-20-2 record

over six years, including 17-4-1 in the final three, winning

league co-championships twice. When he arrived at

Hoosick Falls, the school had been suspended from the

league and placed on probation because of team and

player conduct; in less than two years, Hoosick Falls was

the runnerup for the league’s Sportsmanship award.

In 1965, KEnyon became head football coach at

Guilderland. Coaching 16 years, his Dutchmen had an

86-41-9 record, never having a losing season; in seven of

his years, his teams had two or fewer losses. Guilder-

land’s best years under Bud were 1966 (5-1-2), 1968 (51-

2), 1971 (7-1, No. 1 in the area and No. 19 in the state),

1973 (7-2, No. 1 in the area, No. 18 in the state), 1978

(6-1-2) and 1980 (7-1-1). During his years, Guilderland

set the Suburban Council eight-game offense (217

points) and defense (42 points) records.

He was the recipient of the Capital District Chapter of the

National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Award for

dedication to amateur football in 1990 and the Capital District

Touchdown Club Award for outstanding service and dedica-

tion to football in 1976. Kenyon was the originator of the Sec-

tion II Annual Football Clinic and ran it for 17 years, as well

as serving as the Section II chairman for seven years.

Charlie Leigh (Albany/1965)

Charlie Leigh, one of the only players to go directly to

the National Football League from high school, was a

standout kick returner in the NFL and won a Super Bowl

championship with the Miami Dolphins.

Although he was first signed by the Pittsburgh Steel-

ers and played for the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay

Packers, Charlie is best known for his stint in Miami

(1971-74). During that span, the Dolphins reached the

Super Bowl three times, winning twice and their 1972

season is one of the most popular in NFL history, as the

Dolphins posted a 17-0 record. In the perfect season,

Charlie had a 9.5-yard punt return average and was sixth

in the NFL. The following year, he rushed for 134 yards

and a 6.1 yard average; his kickoff return average (27.9)

would have placed him in the league’s top six if he had

enough returns to qualify. Charlie played for the Cleve-

land Browns in 1968-69, and the Green Bay Packers in

1974. He retired in 1974 at the age of 29.

For his career, Charlie rushed for 372 yards (5.2 yards

per carry), and returned 46 kickoffs for 1,082 yards (23.5)

and 50 punts for 368 yards (7.4). Charlie, who was pre-

sented with the key to the city of Albany in 1974 as part of

the “Charlie Leigh Day” celebration, was a charter member

of the Capital District Sports Hall of Fame and was induct-

ed into the Albany City School District’s Hall of Fame.

Charlie died on October 26, 2006. The following year, the

football field at Bleecker Stadium was named in his honor.

Tim Linehan (Bishop Maginn/1979)

As part of one of the most talented running back com-

binations in Section II history, Tim Linehan helped Bishop

Maginn win the first Class A Super Bowl in 1978.

During his senior year, he scored 24 touchdowns and

ran for 1,800 yards, averaging 13.5 yards per carry. He

also had a 99-yard run from scrimmage, the longest at

Bleecker Stadium. He was named DeNooyer Chevrolet

Player of the Year, Times Union Offensive Player of the

Year, and Schenectady Gazette Player of the Year, as

well as winning All-Big 10 and All-State honors. He also

played baseball and ran indoor track at Bishop Maginn.

Linehan received a four-year football scholarship to

Holy Cross, where he played both football and baseball.

Although his football career ended when he broke his

neck in his sophomore year, he played two years of

baseball after the injury.

Rich Romer (Columbia/1984)

Rich Romer was a three-sport star at Columbia, win-

ning eight letters and serving as captain of the football,

basketball and track teams. In football, Rich was named

to the Suburban All-Star Team and to the Capitaland

Defensive Team in his senior year.

He continued his athletic career at Union College,

where he was a four-year letter winner and three-year

starter. Rich received many athletic and academic

awards during his football career at Union. He was

named APAll-American First Team, ECAC Upstate New

York All-Star, Pizza Hut First-Team, Football News First

Team, and the College Sports Information Directors

Association (CoSIDA) District I Academic All-American.

As a senior, Rich captured the prestigious CoSIDA’s

Kodak First-Team All-American Award for his academic

and athletic excellence, and won an NCAA Post Scholar-

ship Award. Union recognized his accomplishments with

the William B. Jaffe Medal as the College’s “Outstanding

Senior Male Athlete.” Rich finished his career at Union

with 282 total tackles and 42½ sacks, and, in October

2002, was one of the first five individuals inducted into

the Union College Athletics Hall of Fame.

Rich’s talents on the football field were recognized by

the National Football League when he was drafted in the

seventh round by the Cincinnati Bengals as the 168th

player selected. The Bengals advanced to the Super

Bowl that year and Rich was a member of the 1989-1990

Super Bowl team, receiving an AFC championship ring.

Paul Shaver (Adirondack Chapter)

Paul Shaver officiated nearly 700 football games, includ-

ing one state championship, four state semifinal games,

13 regional games, 30 sectional games (including four

Super Bowls), and three Exceptional Senior Games.

He was a member of the Adirondack Chapter of New

York State Certified Football Officials Association for 32

years. He served as Rules Interpreter, President, Vice

President, and member of the Executive, Membership

and Ethics committees of the Adirondack Chapter.

Paul won the National Football Foundation and Col-

lege Hall of Fame Outstanding Football Official Award in

2000, Adirondack Chapter NYSCFBO Honorary Lifetime

Membership in 2003, and New York State Association of

Certified Football Officials Merit Award in 1989.

He was the head varsity football coach at Schuylerville

for five years, winning one championship and sharing

another. He also served as assistant football coach at

Schuylerville and Swartz Creek (MI).

Tim Sherwin (Watervliet/1977)

Tim Sherwin, one of Section II’s greatest receivers,

was a standout at Watervliet and Boston College and in

the National Football League with the Baltimore Colts

and New York Giants.

Sherwin was a three-sport athlete at Watervliet. As a

senior co-captain, he led the Cannoneers to a 7-1 record,

and graduated with 1,067 receiving yards and 67 catch-

es, the most in Section II history at the time. Tim was

named All-Area and All-City, as well as being named the

Troy Record’s Offensive Player of the Year. He was his

school’s Athlete of the Year in 197677 and his Watervliet

football jersey was retired in 1990.

Tim received a four-year scholarship to Boston College

where he was a two-year starting tight end. He caught 78

passes at Boston College and earned All-East honors as

a senior, with 29 catches and 378 yards. Tim was captain

of the 1980 Boston College team and helped the Eagles

to a 7-4 record, while winning the Thomas F. Scranton

Award as the team’s scholar athlete. He has since been

inducted into the Boston College Hall of Fame.

He was picked by the Baltimore Colts in the fourth

round of 1981 NFL draft. Tim played seven years with the

Colts, with 76 catches and 1,002 receiving yards; his best

season was 1983 when he had 25 catches for 358 yards.

He finished his career with the New York Giants in 1988.

Justice Smith (Amsterdam/1992)

Justice Smith graduated as Section II’s all-time rush-

ing leader and, nearly two decades later, is still the top

large-school rusher in area history.

As a senior, after leading Amsterdam to an 11-0

record and a regional playoff victory, Justice was named

New York State Class A Player of the Year, as well as a

USA Today and Gatorade All-American. He also won the

Touchdown Club of Atlanta Bobby Dodd High School

Football Award as the Back of the Year in New York;

National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award; and

National High School Football Service Region Selection

for Academics. Justice was named Metroland Coaches

Player of the Year; Times Union, Schenectady Gazette

and Amsterdam Recorder all-area first team; and

Metroland Conference all-area first team. He finished his

career with 4,124 rushing yards, breaking the previous

Section II record by nearly 800 yards. In his junior year,

Justice was named third-team all-state, as well as first-

team all-area by the Times Union, Gazette and Recorder;

he also appeared in “America’s Best Football Players” in

1990. As a sophomore, Justice was Section 2’s leading

scorer with 20 touchdowns and was named to the Times

Union, Gazette, and Recorder all-area first team, as well

winning Metroland all-area first team honors. He was the

first freshman selected to the Big 10 all-star, rushing for

over 1,000 yards and scoring on a 79-yard run on the first

play of his varsity career; he was also selected to the

Gazette all-area second team.

Justice’s football career continued at Boston College,

where he helped the Eagles to three bowl appearances

(Hall of Fame, Carquest, and Aloha). He was the Kick Off

Classic Chevrolet Player of the Game against Ohio State

(1995), ECAC Player of the Week against Notre Dame

(1994), and won the Game Ball against Army (1992).

Brent Steuerwald (Shenendehowa)

Brent Steuerwald has won 300 games and is only the

third coach in New York State history to reach that level.

In 1968, Brent started the Shenendehowa program,

which was top-ranked in New York State in 1982-84 and

reached the state championship game in 1995 and 2002.

His Plainsmen, who were state semifinalists in 2003 and

won a regional title in 1992, have won 10 Section II

championships and 25 Suburban Council crowns.

His awards include National High School Athletic

Coaches Association Football Coach of the Year (1995),

New York State Champion Coach of the Year (1981),

New York State Coaches Association Coach of the Year

(1982, 1988, 1992 and 1995), Region One Winner

National Coach of the Year (1982, 1985, 1988, 1992, and

1995), and Empire State Scholastic Sports Figure of the

Year (1988). Brent has been named area or league

coach of the year 19 times.

Other honors include Shenendehowa Hall of Fame

(2009), Capital District 3rd Age Achievement Award in

Athletics (2003), Christian Brothers Academy Distin-

guished Alumni Award (2002), New York State Athletic

Administrators Association Leadership Award (1995),

Capital Zone Physical Education Administrative Award

(1988), and New York State Association Health Physical

Education Recreation State Administrative Award (1985).

Brent has been a coaching clinic presenter and speak-

er at numerous events, including the National Football

Foundation/National Football League Coaching Acade-

my. He has been Capital District chapter president of the

National Football Foundation and Hall Fame (1987-

2009), and won the Eastern Region Leadership Award

for Contribution to Amateur Football.

He has served on the Executive Committee of the

New York State Pupil Benefits Plan and chairman of the

National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

He has been the Section II football, track and gymnas-

tics chairman, and was meet director of the New York

State championship track meet (1974). Brent was the

New York State head coach in the 2001 Governor's Bowl

when New York won for the first time.

Ernie Stautner (Vincentian Institute/1943)

Ernie Stautner, a 14-year veteran of the National Foot-

ball League, is the only Capital District player ever to be

inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was select-

ed to the Pro Bowl nine times in a 10-year period, earning

MVP of the Pro Bowl and NFL Best Lineman in 1957.

Ernie was born in Prinzing-bei-Cham, Bavaria, Ger-

many, and grew up in East Greenbush after his family

immigrated to the United States when he was 3-years-

old. He played football at Vincentian Institute in Albany.

Ernie served in the Marine Corps during World War II

and, after his service, attended Boston College.

He was a four-year starter at offensive and defensive

tackle. He graduated from BC with a bachelor's degree in

Psychology. Ernie was selected by Pittsburgh in the sec-

ond round (22nd overall) in the 1950 NFL Draft and

played his entire 14-year career with the Steelers.

Despite being undersized for a defensive tackle at 6-1,

235 pounds, Ernie developed into one of the game's

most outstanding defensive players. His outstanding play

earned him first- or second-team All-NFL honors nine

times. Ernie missed only six games during his entire NFL

career, despite numerous injuries.

When Ernie retired, he became the first and only

Steeler to have his jersey retired. In 1969, in his first year

of eligibility, Ernie was inducted into the Pro Football Hall

of Fame. From 1966 to 1989, he was a coach, defensive

coordinator and scout with

the Dallas Cowboys. Ernie was also defensive line

coach for the Denver Broncos, head coach of the Frank-

fort Galaxy of NFL Europe, and the Dallas Texans of the

Arena Football League team. Ernie was elected to the

Steelers' 50th anniversary team in 1982 and was elected

posthumously by Pittsburgh fans to the Steelers' 75th

Anniversary All-Time Team in November 2007. He died

February 16, 2006.

Eric Torkelson (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake/1970)

Eric Torkelson was a running back, defensive back

and team captain for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, winning

All-State honors in his senior year.

He attended the University of Connecticut where he

was New England Player of the Year in 1973 and named

to the All-Yankee Conference team as a running back.

Eric was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1974 and

played there for eight seasons as a running back and

special teams player. In his NFL career, he rushed for

1,307 yards, caught 59 passes for 469 yards, and scored

eight touchdowns; his best season was 1979, when he

ran for 401 yards and three touchdowns.

Paul Vellano (Bishop Gibbons/1970)

While at Bishop Gibbons, Paul Vellano was named a

Sunkist High School Football All-American, as well as All-

County and All Diocesan, Thom McCan Defensive Player of

the Year, and Four Chaplins-Rotterdam Player of the Year.

At the University of Maryland, he was selected for the

UPI, Coaches and Kodak All-American teams. Paul also

received the Ernie Davis Leadership Award and played in

the Coach's All-American Game and Hula Bowl, as well

as winning All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors as a jun-

ior and senior. He helped the Terrapins reach the Peach

Bowl in 1973. Paul graduated from Maryland in 1974.

He was drafted by the Chicago Bears, but played for

two years in the World Football League, with the Florida

Blazers (where he was captain) and the San Antonio

Wings. He also was with the Washington Redskins in

their 1976 summer camp.
