Football Game Notes vs. Central Connecticut State (10/20/12)

Top Story - The Robert Morris University football team returns home for the first time in three weeks this Saturday, Oct. 20, at Noon as the Colonials host Central Connecticut State at Joe Walton Stadium. RMU is coming off of the short end of a 38-35 decision at Bryant last week, the Colonials’ first loss in their past 18 games in which they’ve scored at least 30 points. Nolan Nearhoof provided a bright spot for RMU last weekend as he posted three sacks, which was more than enough to move him into the career lead at Robert Morris in that category. This is Central Connecticut’s first visit to Moon Township since the squads met in 2010 with the NEC title essentially hanging in the balance as RMU claimed a 42-24 victory in that matchup. RMU has rushed for at least 170 yards in each of its past three games. RMU will welcome five indi- viduals into its Athletics Hall of Fame at halftime, including former strong safety Ray Thomas (1997-2000), who tallied 240 career tackles, and longtime radio announcer Chris Shovlin. After facing the Blue Devils, Robert Morris will head right back on the road to take on Wagner Oct. 27. Quick Stat of the Afternoon - Robert Morris senior defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof had a memorable day this past Saturday at Bryant as he broke RMU’s all-time program record for career sacks. Nearhoof tied his single-game career high with three sacks and, in the process, became the first Colonial ever to surpass 20 sacks as he finished his day with 21.5. Ray Gensler (2003-06) previously held the record with 19. Nearhoof claimed his second-consecutive All-NEC First Team honor in 2011 despite missing the final two games due to injury. In doing so, Nearhoof became just the third player in the league, on offense or defense, to earn an all-conference first team award in both 2010 and 2011. In addition to topping the program in sacks, Nearhoof cur- rently ranks as RMU's active leader in tackles (175) and tackles for loss (27.5). Nearhoof is cur- rently tied for the NEC lead in sacks per game and is tied for 12th nationally. Saturday’s Opponent - Central Connecticut State is one of just three opponents Robert Morris faced in each of the first 18 years the Colonials fielded an intercollegiate program, joining fellow NEC foes Saint Francis and Wagner. All-time the Colonials are 13-5 (.722) against the Blue Devils, and the home team has won each of the past seven games in the series. The last time these two programs met at Joe Walton Stadium (11/6/10) RMU posted a 42-24 victory to clinch its sixth NEC championship. For more information on the all-time series against Central Connecticut State, including the last game recap, please see page four of today’s game notes. On This Date (Oct. 20) in Robert Morris Football History - Robert Morris met CCSU 11 years ago to the day and came away with a 38-18 victory. Although the final score appears one-sided, the game was in doubt for much of the way as the Colonials trailed, 18-12, in the final minute of the third quarter before erupting for 26 points in the game’s final 16 minutes while simultaneously holding CCSU scoreless. The Colonials’ offense was on fire as it racked up 476 yards of total offense, the fourth-highest road total in RMU history, a figure which was almost equally bal- anced between rushing (235) and passing (241). Sam Dorsett (1999-2003) tallied 208 rushing yards, the second-highest road sum in Colonial history, on 27 attempts, averaging 7.7 yards per carry. Tim Levcik (1998-2001) was 17-of-29 for 241 yards and tossed three touchdown passes while Stephen McNair (2001-02) caught five passes for 106 yards, including a touchdown. Corey Oaks (2001-02) notched an interception and recovered his own forced fumble to aid the win. Head Coach Joe Walton19th Season - Pittsburgh ’57

At the forefront of the football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 19-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region. The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing every-thing from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’s inaugural season in 1994. Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football pro-gram, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the

first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship. “It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the per-fect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.” Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-season titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998, 2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and 1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eight-game winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s first bid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victory in the collegiate ranks.

Arute Field (Attendance: 2,125) - Robert Morris saw its losing streak reach four as Central Connecticut State posted a 31-24 victory over the Colonials at Arute Field. Central Connecticut State grabbed an early 7-0 lead at the 8:41 mark of the first quarter when Brian Fowler produced a nine-yard touchdown run. RMU would tie the contest, 7-7, in the second quarter when junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run. Sinclair rushed for 16 yards during the drive and connected with Jamie Cobb twice for passes that totaled 35 yards, including a 17-yard strike that moved the ball to the CCSU seven-yard line. The Colonials would take a 10-7 lead on their next possession thanks to a 33-yard field goal from Greg Langer, but Sinclair was lost for the rest of the game due to injury during the drive. Central Connecticut State would take the lead back, 14-10, thanks to a five-yard touchdown pass from Gunnar Jespersen to David Sabilia with 1:24 left before the break, but freshman quar-terback Matt Layman, subbing for Sinclair, gave RMU some spark heading into halftime, march-ing the Colonials 56 yards on four plays in just 39 seconds before capping it with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cobb. Layman completed all four of his passes during the drive for 61 yards. Robert Morris would struggle offensively in the third quarter, however, going three-and-out on each of its three possessions. The Blue Devils took the lead for good with 3:47 to go in the third quarter when Jespersen tossed his second touchdown pass of the day, this time a 15-yard score to Raul DeBenendittis. Fowler added a 13-yard touchdown run and Juan Duque a 31-yard field goal to push CCSU's advantage to 31-17 in the fourth quarter, but Layman engineered another quick scoring drive, marching Robert Morris 67 yards on just three plays, connecting with junior tight end Paul Evans for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 2:07 remaining. The Colonials tried the on-side kick to get the ball back, but Denzell Jones made a diving grab to help Central Connecticut State retain possession. Layman finished 12-for-16 passing for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the most extensive action of his young career in place of Sinclair. Senior wide receiver Anthony Coleman posted a career-high seven receptions for 87 yards to pace the receiving corps, while Cobb recorded four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. A total of six Colonials reached double-digits in tackles, led by junior defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof, who finished with a career-high 13. Junior linebacker Kyle Cooper added 12 stops, while safeties Cameron Chadwick and D.J. Myers each recorded 11 takedowns.

Robert Morris Quick FactsLast Time Out - Robert Morris set seasons highs in points (35) and total yards (406) last Saturday at Bryant … RMU’s 406 yards of total offense was its best output in its past 14 road games … RMU had fewer turnovers than its opponent for the third-consecutive game … The Colonials were a perfect 4-for-4 on converting red zone opportunities into touchdowns … Duane Mitchell caught a pair of touchdown passes, the first multi-TD game of his career … Fullback Nick Groat scored his first-career touchdown … True freshman Brian Jones tallied his first-career interception … Chris Thompkins posted a career-best two sacks … Jeff Sinclair jumped into third place in career total offense, surpassing 5,500 yards, and moved into fourth place in career TD passes with 48.

Triple Digits - Junior Evan Taylor has raised his level over the past three games as he looks to develop into a top-tier running back. Taylor had the most productive day of his young offensive career Oct. 6 at Saint Francis as he carried 25 times for a career-high 133 yards. Then last weekend at Bryant, Taylor topped the century mark again, scam-pering for 105 yards on 18 attempts. In fact, Taylor was just six yards short of reaching the 100-yard rushing plateau in three straight games as he posted 94 in the Homecoming victory over Lafayette. On his last 58 rushing attempts, Taylor has rushed for 331 yards, an average of more than 5.7 yards per carry.

Picking Up Steam - Greg Langer has settled in nicely as RMU’s starting placekicker, as the senior has hit 11 straight field goal attempts and 15 of his last 17 in the last 15 games. Langer finished tied with Charlie Leventry of Duquesne for the Northeast Conference lead in both field goals (12) and field goals per game (1.09) in 2011. Thanks to his 27-yard field goal against Duquesne in the 2011 season finale (11/19), Langer broke the RMU school record for consecutive field goals made. Former kicker Jeff Carlo (1998-2001) had converted seven straight over the course of the 1998 and 1999 seasons, while former kicker Michael Walser (2005-07) closed out the 2007 campaign by hitting seven straight field goals. Langer has not taken an easy path to the record either as seven of his past 11 field goals have been converted from farther than 35 yards.

Against the Trend - Entering last Saturday’s tilt at Bryant, in which RMU scored a sea-son-high 35 points, Robert Morris had won 17 consecutive games, including 14 straight NEC contests, when scoring at least 30 points, a stretch that dated to the 2005 season. The last time RMU lost when scoring 30+ had been Oct. 29, 2005 when it fell to Stony Brook, 38-37. Additionally, prior to last Saturday, the Colonials had not lost on the road when scoring at least 30 points since Oct. 18, 1997 when they dropped a 33-30 decision to Towson.

Sack Attack - In last week’s game at Bryant, Robert Morris posted a season-high six sacks, led by Nolan Nearhoof’s record-breaking three. RMU had been 20-5 (.800) in program history entering last Saturday when having at least five sacks in a game, but it picked up its sixth loss against the Bulldogs. Amazingly, each of RMU’s last eight games in which it has tallied at least five sacks has come away from home.

Offensive Defense - Brad Banas intercepted a pass and returned 55 yards for a touch-down last week, marking RMU’s second defensive TD in the past three weeks. It’s the first time since 2008 that RMU has at least two defensive touchdowns in one season.

Experience Counts - When taking a look down the Robert Morris roster, the Colonials seem to have a bevy of experience at the defensive line position. Defensive linemen R.J. Cook, Farren Mason, Sam Miller, Steve Mitchell, Nolan Nearhoof and Chris Thompkins have combined for 101 starts during their time at RMU. Due to injuries, each member of the sextet saw starting assignments during the 2011 season. Mitchell and Nearhoof lead the way with 28 starts each followed by Miller with 25, although the first 22 of Miller's career actually came when he was a member of the offensive line. Mason is next in line, having earned the nod 15 times in his career.

Start Me Up - Steve Mitchell enters Saturday’s game with the most consecutive starting assignments of any active Colonial. Mitchell has started 28 straight games at defensive end. A.J. Dalton is second in that category with 23 straight starts on the offensive line. Jeff Sinclair is the Colonials’ active leader in overall starts with 31.

Game #6 • Bryant 38, Robert Morris 35October 13, 2012 • Smithfield, R.I.

Bulldog Stadium (Attendance: 3,682) - Robert Morris set season highs in points and total yards at Bryant, but the Bulldogs were the last to score and came away with a 38-35 victory in a back-and-forth affair. Despite the setback, one Colonial senior had a day to remember as defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof broke RMU’s all-time program record for career sacks. Nearhoof tied his single-game career high with three sacks and, in the process, became the first Colonial ever to surpass 20 sacks as he finished his day with 21.5. Senior Jeff Sinclair threw for 209 yards and two scores and rushed for 44 yards and another touchdown as he continued to climb the career ranks in multiple offensive categories. Sophomore Duane Mitchell caught both of Sinclair’s touchdown passes. Mitchell finished with a career-best 72 receiving yards while posting the first multi-TD game of his career. After stopping the Bulldogs on their opening drive, Robert Morris scored a touchdown on its first possession as it drove 80 yards on nine plays before Sinclair hooked up with Mitchell fewer than eight min-utes into the first quarter. Bryant soon found its offensive groove as it scored touchdowns on drives of 58 and 75 yards and added a field goal on its next three possessions to take a 16-7 lead with 8:15 left in the second quarter. The Colonials would bounce back soon as they drove 73 yards on seven plays, including a 31-yard run by wide receiver Donte Jeter, before Sinclair found Mitchell in the left corner of the end zone to pull RMU within two points, a score which would stand until halftime. After each team failed to score on its opening possession of the second half, the two squads each hit paydirt on their next two drives. RMU drove 80 yards on 10 plays, capped off by a Sinclair 2-yard rush, but Bryant came right back and scored on a 43-yard screen pass. The Colonials then drove 90 yards on just seven plays as fullback Nick Groat rumbled into the end zone from five yards out. The Bulldogs came right back and scored on a seven-play, 66-yard drive to take a 31-28 lead with 14:45 remaining in regulation. The RMU defense would come up with a big play as Brad Banas tallied a ‘pick-six’ to put the Colonials back on top, 35-31, with under nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Bryant then posted what proved to be the winning score as it drove 65 yards, taking the lead for good on a 16-yard pass. RMU went three-and-out on its next drive, and Bryant ended up with fantastic field position, which allowed the Bulldogs to essentially ice the game.

Last RMU GameTeam Defense - Robert Morris has played six games thus far in 2012, and the Colonials have yet to have the same player lead the team in tackles for a game more than once. In fact, since two Colonials tied for game-high honors in the team’s home opener vs. Albany (9/8), seven distinct defensive players have led the defense in tackles through the squad’s first six games, including each of the four starting linebackers. Cameron Chadwick posted a game-high 12 tackles at defending national champion North Dakota State (9/1), Brad Banas and Mike Neilson each tallied 10 against the defending NEC champion Great Danes, Mike Cook registered a game-high 11 stops @ Dayton (9/15), Marcelis Branch notched a team season-best 15 vs. Lafayette (9/29), Mark Centofanti topped the chart @ Saint Francis (10/6) with 10 tackles and D.J. Myers led the Colonials with eight hits @ Bryant last week.

Langer's Leg - Greg Langer knocked through his first career game-winning field goal in the Sept. 29 win over Lafayette, a kick which came three weeks after he converted a career-long 49-yard field goal vs. Albany (9/8).

Run Forrest Run - The RMU offense has been chewing up chunks of yardage on the ground over the team’s past three games as they have piled up 553 rushing yards, including tallying at least 170 in each of those outings. The past three games represents just the third time since 2001 in which RMU has rushed for at least 170 yards in three (or more) consecutive games with the other streaks happening during 2008 and 2010. Also, RMU’s 197 rushing yards at Bryant last week was its best such road total in over six years.

Foot Joy - One of the most important aspects that senior Jeff Sinclair brings to the quarterback position at Robert Morris is his versatility. In a 38-35 set-back @ Bryant last week, Sinclair rushed for a 2-yard touchdown on a naked bootleg in the third quarter that gave the Colonials a 21-16 lead. In 31 career games, Sinclair has already rushed for 16 touchdowns. To put that in perspec-tive, prior to Sinclair becoming the starter under center at RMU, quarter-backs combined for 16 rushing touchdowns in the first 156 games of the pro-gram’s history.

Turnovers (Don't) Matter - The RMU defense has displayed an ability to force turnovers in its past three games as it has forced eight in this span. However, despite only committing four turnovers of its own during this stretch, RMU is only 1-2 (.333). In fact, the Colonials committed fewer turnovers than their opponent in each of their last two games and lost them both. That unfortu-nate feat marked the first time in school history in which RMU has committed fewer turnovers than its opponent in consecutive games and lost twice.

Any Given Saturday - Entering Saturday’s contest against Bryant, there are two Colonials who would have pretty good odds of seeing the field, judging solely by their past histories. Redshirt seniors Sanchez Faugue and Sam Miller have each appeared in 39 games in their RMU careers, tops among active players. Faugue has the distinction of competing in each of the past 39 contests while Miller missed the 2010 season, but played in every game in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Senior Steve Mitchell is in hot pursuit of this duo as he has seen the field in 38 games in his career, including 30 straight contests.

Fresh Faces - As with any other year, the first half of the 2012 season has fea-tured the first collegiate appearances for some newer Colonials. A total of 10 Colonials have made their first career starts thus far this season. Among the 10 are a pair of true freshmen who have combined for nine starts thus far as Max Robertson has started at left guard and Marcelis Branch at cornerback. Robertson and Branch were the second offensive lineman and cornerback, respectively, to make their first-career start in 2012, joining sophomore cen-ter Nick Faraci and sophomore cornerback Zach Washington. In total, 16 Colonials have competed in a RMU uniform for the first time this season.

NEC Champions since 1996

Making the Grade - Defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team this past November, becoming only the second student-athlete in program history to earn two CoSIDA Academic All-American hon-ors. Nearhoof had previously become the third player in program history to be named to the ESPN Academic All-America Team in 2010 when he earned second team acco-lades. Nearhoof owns a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.74 as a biology major and joined former Colonials Jonathan LeDonne (2001-04) and Ray Gensler (2003-06) to earn the honor. LeDonne, a linebacker, was named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team, while Gensler, a defensive lineman, was a two-time honoree, earning second team accolades in 2005 and first team honors in 2006. Nearhoof was also named as the NEC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the sec-ond-consecutive year. He was the fourth player in program history to claim that honor but the first to ever win it twice.

Regulation Only - Entering Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State, Robert Morris will have gone 64 consecutive games without having a contest go into overtime. That is the longest such streak in program history since the NCAA instituted overtime in college football for the 1996 season. In fact, every other current member of the NEC has played at least one overtime game since RMU’s last such contest. The last time the Colonials headed to overtime was Oct. 14, 2006 when RMU upset No. 19 Central Connecticut State, 23-17 (2OT), in what was the program’s first-ever game against a nationally ranked opponent. After Jacky Candy (2006) intercepted a Blue Devil pass right near the goal line in the second extra session, Erik Cwalinski (2005-08) hooked up with Mario Hines (2004, 2006-07) for a game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-12. That contest against the Blue Devils remains the only home game in RMU history to go into overtime.

Climbing the Charts - Robert Morris senior quarterback Jeff Sinclair is climbing the RMU record book in multiple categories as he concludes his career in 2012. With his two touchdown passes Sept. 15, Sinclair moved into sole possession of third place in career touchdowns responsible for at Robert Morris. He now has 64 and needs two more to pass Jake Newman (1994-97) for second place all-time in that department. Sinclair is also third in career total offense (5,509), fourth in career touchdown passes (48) and fifth in career completions (373) and career passing yards (4,820) at RMU. His total offense per game average of 177.7 is second all-time at RMU, trailing only Tim Levcik’s (1998-01) top mark of 191.4. Despite being a quarterback, Sinclair actually is fifth in career rushing touchdowns at Robert Morris (16) and moved into the top 10 in career rushing yards with his 84-yard performance against Lafayette.

Mighty Marcelis - Marcelis Branch earned a unique distinction as he was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week and the NEC Rookie of the Week Oct. 1. Branch, starting in just his third collegiate game, helped RMU to a victory over previously undefeated Lafayette Sept. 29, a squad which was receiving votes in both major national polls entering the game. In earning this pair of awards, Branch became the first Colonial in program history to earn conference defensive and rookie honors in the same season, let alone the same week. Branch had a huge impact on the game as he forced two turn-overs while also contributing a team season-high 15 tackles, 12 of which were of the solo variety. Branch’s 15 tackles tied him for the second-highest figure by a Robert Morris freshman in a single game and the most since James Noel (2002-05) posted 15 in 2002. Branch has 35 tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 2012.

For Starters - When Robert Morris took the field Oct. 13 against Bryant, it sported its sixth starting lineup on offense in its sixth game. However, if 2011 was any indication, RMU fans shouldn’t be surprised. Due to a number of injuries as well as changes with the depth chart, Robert Morris used nine different starting lineups on offense last season and has used 16 different starting combinations in its last 18 games. The start-ers actually stayed the same for three straight weeks in October 2011, but RMU had changes in its lineup from one week to the next throughout the early and late parts of the campaign. The Colonials were forced into starting three different quarterbacks and also had five different tailbacks/fullbacks start a game in 2011. The only returning Colonial on offense who started every game in 2011 is lineman A.J. Dalton.

Head Coach-In-Waiting John Banaszak

Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., announced this past January that RMU Assistant Head Football Coach John Banaszak has been named the program's coach-in-waiting. Banaszak, who has spent the last nine years as an assistant coach and assistant head coachwith the Colonials, will take over for current head coach Joe Walton at the conclusion of the2013 season. "Coach Walton has done a tremendous job starting the program from scratch and developing it to its current level," Coleman said. "We are blessed to have another outstanding coach on our staff in Coach Banaszak to provide leadership and excellence when Walton retires." The 2011 season marked Banaszak's ninth season as a member of the Robert Morris footballcoach staff, including his fourth campaign as assistant head coach. Among his many duties with the program, Banaszak is responsible for tutoring the defensive line and the special teams unit. During Banaszak's time at Robert Morris, the Colonials have led the Northeast Conference intotal defense four times (2004, 2006, 2009 and 2010) and have finished in the top five in theleague on eight occasions. Banaszak was a key component to a 2010 defense that led the NEC in total defense, allowingan average of 312.6 yards per game, and coaching a defensive line that recorded 13 of RMU's21 sacks as the Colonials claimed the NEC's inaugural berth in the FCS Playoffs. In 2006, Banaszak helped tutor an RMU defense that led I-AA in total defense, allowing anaverage of just 228.36 yards per game. Under Banaszak's guidance, former defensive lineman Ray Gensler (2003-06) tied the RMUsingle-season school record for sacks with 11 in 2006 en route to earning All-NEC First Teamhonors. Gensler also established a career record in sacks with 19 thanks to 11 in 2006, andthe Robert Morris defensive line that season recorded 28 and-a-half of RMU's school record 34sacks. Eight of the 11 players in school history to earn All-NEC recognition on the defensive line have come under the tutelage of Banaszak, including Nolan Nearhoof, who led the Colonials with seven and-a-half sacks last year en route to being named to the 2011 All-NEC First Team. Prior to RMU, Banaszak served as the 30th head coach in Washington & Jefferson footballhistory, leading the Presidents to a record of 38-9 (.809) in his four seasons on the sidelinesbetween 1999 and 2002. In each of those four campaigns, he was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and ranks third on the college's all-time victory list. A 1975 graduate of Eastern Michigan with a bachelor's degree in health, physical educationand recreation, Banaszak signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the 1975season and was one of only three rookies to make the defending Super Bowl champion teamout of training camp. Primarily a special teams player on Pittsburgh's Super Bowl X championship team, Banaszakstarted five games the following season and then started at both right end and inside tackle in1977 before suffering a knee injury that forced him to the injured reserve list. Between 1978 and 1980, Banaszak started 45 regular-season games at defensive end as the Steelers won back-to-back Super Bowl championships. In Super Bowl XIII, Banaszak recorded six tackles, including a pair of sacks, and a fumble recovery in a 35-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, which garnered him Defensive Player of the Game honors. The following year in Super Bowl XIV, Banaszak finished with five tackles and a sack in a 31-19 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Robert Morris in the 2012 NEC StatsNo Tickets - When RMU takes to its home field in front of a sellout crowd, good things seem to happen. The latest example came in the team’s 31-28, last-second, Homecoming victory over Lafayette, a team which was previ-ously unbeaten and receiving votes in the national polls. That win moved RMU to 5-2 (.714) all-time when playing in front of a sold-out Joe Walton Stadium. RMU has won four consecutive home games that have been sellouts, a stretch which includes each of the last three Homecoming games. The first sellout at “The Joe” was also the first-ever game it hosted, Sept. 17, 2005.

Get To The Chopper - A quick glance at RMU’s record when broken down proves how important it is the Colonials get off to a good start in contests. When Robert Morris is leading at halftime, the program owns an all-time record of 86-12 (.878). When trailing at the break, Robert Morris owns a mark of 10-64-1 (.140). Even going into halftime tied is beneficial, as the Colonials own an overall record of 11-8 (.579) in such games.

The Magic Mark - Since the Colonials began play in 1994 there have been 72 games in which Robert Morris has scored 30 or more points. In those contests RMU boasts a record of 67-5 (.931), including a record of 39-5 (.886) in games in which the team scores between 30 and 39 points. In games in which the Colonials score 40 or more points, RMU is a perfect 28-0.

RMU Football Historical Tidbits - The inaugural running back at Robert Morris, the late Tim Hall (1994-95), rushed for 2,908 yards in his two seasons as a Colonial. Hall still owns the FCS season and career records for yards per carry, with his season record of 8.7 yards per carry set in 1994 and his two-year career record of 7.4 established in 1994 and 1995 ... Hall also ranks fourth all-time in the FCS in both rushing yards per game (153.1) and all-purpose yards per game (194.8) ... Former Colonial linebacker James Noel (2002-05) ranks fifth in the FCS record book for career tackles per game (10.7), while his career tackle total of 437 takedowns ranks 12th all-time ... Former linebacker and current assistant coach Alex DiMichele (2008-10) averaged 10 tackles per game over his three years in a Robert Morris uniform, which ranks 11th all-time in the FCS record book ... Robert Morris has led the nation in passing defense twice in the past 13 years. The Colonials topped the charts in both 1999, when they conceded just 80.80 yards per game through the air, and 2006, when they allowed only 88.70 yards per game via the pass.

Did You Know? - Robert Morris owns the all-time FCS record for the most consecutive quarters while holding an opponent scoreless. During the 1996 season, the Colonials went 15 straight quarters without allowing a single point. In fact, the record-setting streak occurred at the beginning of the sea-son. RMU posted three straight shutouts -- 20-0 against Mercyhurst (9/7), 38-0 against Butler (9/14) and 7-0 against Towson State (9/21) -- to open the campaign and then held Central Connecticut State (9/28) scoreless for the first three quarters before finally allowing a point for the first time all sea-son. In all, RMU went 234:04 before allowing a point in 1996. RMU went 9-2 (.818) in 1996, claiming a share of the NEC championship, and conceded just 12.9 points per game.
