Titles

• The titles include the producers, actors, directors, make up and hair designers, costume designer, composer, editors, the name of the book ‘Football Factory’ and the writer.

• The titles are shown in white, bold writing on a dark background in the centre of the screen to stand out to the audience. It also gives it a more aggressive feeling to it which signifies the genre of the film.

Location

• The real footage shows that the film is set in rough areas of the country where football hooliganism occurs. Also when Tommy Johnson is walking through the street that it is set in London. And we can also tell this from his accent. Using these as locations makes it seem more real and these type of areas are where the typical hooligans are from.

Enigma

From what Tommy Johnson says and what is happening to him he leaves the audience wondering:

•Why is he getting beaten up so brutally?

•Why could he see it coming?

•Why does he find it exciting?

Generic Conventions

• The footage that shows the football hooligans fighting and the scene where Tommy is getting beaten up shows us what the film is based on and that it is an action film. Just from this the audience know what to expect from the film.

• The music that is used has a low,

upbeat sound to it and the bold white writing used for the titles represents that the genre is action.

Costumes

• The scene that shows Tommy Johnson’s in a mid shot shows us that by the clothes he's wearing that he is a chavvy, aggressive football hooligan. This portrays a negative and fearful atmosphere to the film.

Editing

• The editing used in the first scenes when it shows the footage of the hooligans fighting is fast cutting.

• This type of editing is used because the scene involves fighting to make it seem more aggressive. Also the music is upbeat so the fast cutting makes it all fit together to give this feeling.

Editing

• Slow motion is used when Tommy Johnson is getting beaten up because it helps the audience feel as though the pain he is going through is nonstop as he says ‘’the fucking pain goes on forever’’

• Also because he is ‘nearly dead’ so the slow motion makes us feel how he is feeling which is drowsy andclose to dying.

Page 9: Football factory opening scene

Low Key

• While he is getting beaten it uses low key lighting because this symbolises the ferociousness from the football hooligans and also that it is a terrible scene. Also black symbolises death as you wonder if he’s to die or not.

Page 10: Football factory opening scene

High Key

• The high key lighting is used because in this scene it is before all the badness of him getting beaten has happened and when he is feeling alright before he could ‘’see it coming’’.

Close up

• The close up shot is used to show his facial expression when he’s getting beaten up and shows him feeling the pain when he’s getting punched.

A close up is used because as we can see his facial expression we know what he’s going through.

Mid Shot

• The mid shot is to show us the main character, his attitude and what we expect him to be like. This attitude gives us the idea that he is a rough and tough character and this links to the genre of the film because it gives out the fact of what the other football hooligans are like. His attitude is furious giving a set atmosphere and mood to the film.

Non Diegetic Sound

• The music is non diegetic and fast paced. This sets the scene for a violent film. This music works well with the scenes with the fighting.

Page 14: Football factory opening scene

Diegetic

• The sound of him getting punched helps the audience feel the pain he is going through and this pain is experienced by other hooligans so it is a theme for a football hooligan film.

• Also the style of his speech has an aggressive tone to it which helps the audience know that he is a hard character.

Narration

• It has narration from the main character Tommy Johnson. It introduces him and tells us about his current life. When this starts the music stops to show his importance.

• This is a main part of the opening scene because it lets us know all about the main character.

• Narration from Tommy also lets the audience know that the film is about his life.

Iconography

• Typical things that represent the film as an action film are the fighting between the hooligans at the start, the blood on Tommy’s face and the prop which is a brick used by another man to knock Tommy out.

• All of these are to do with fighting so that is why they represent the genre as action.

Themes

• The footage in black and white and the beating part all represent the genre. The denotation of this film being an action film is the blood on his face, which is a good use of make up, and him being punched along with the sound of it also signifies this.
