Buchanan FieldHome of the Gonzaga Eagles Since 1973

Gonzaga in 1924

Since its dedication four decades ago, Buchanan Field has been the home of the Eagles. The field is the second on-campus, but as the 1892 plat shows there was considerably more open space during the early days of Gonzaga Football. By 1924, the campus was largely filled in and Gonzaga had to find another playing field. In 1929, Gonzaga played its first game at Gonzaga Field on land acquired by the Jesuits at 37thStreet and Benning Road NE. By 1949, growth east of the Anacostia River and the need for a public school resulted in a government condemnation action and the closure of the stadium which had seats for 3,000 fans. It was not until the 1974 season that Gonzaga Football returned to Eye Street.

The construction of the underground parking facility is expected to be completed before the 2015 season. In the meantime, the 2014 squad will spend the season on the road, as did every Gonzaga team between 1950 and 1973.

Season PreviewNeshaminy (PA) In a rare trip to PA, the Eagles will take on a team that lost in the state semi-finals in 2013 and returns their leading rusher, who gained nearly 3,000 yards last season. With a long football history, the openeing oppo-nent will present an early test.

Centerville Cougars (VA)In a rare Public-Private match up, the Eagles will travel to play the defend-ing VA state champions and the projected #1 team in the area. For the first time ever, the Eagles will appear on ESPN, as this game has attached national interest.

Georgetown PrepSince the advent of the Jesuit Grid-iron Classic in 2004, no team has won three consecutive games. The Eagles have won the last two and hold a 7-3 edge against the Little Hoyas. over the past decade.

McKinley TechThe Trainers are coached by ffirst year Head Coach Robert Lee. After a slow start last season, the Trainers won their last 7 games. In the last match-up in 2010, the Eagles rolled to a big win.

Good CounselMarcus Lewis returned the opening KO for a TD and the Eagles came away with a convincing 30-20 win over the then #1 team in the area. The victory ended GC win streak over the Eagles dating back to 2003, which ended 17 years of Eagle domination.

Archbishop CarrollThe Lions have a proud football tradition, borne of a long list of Catholic League championships dating back to the early 1960’s. The Eagles have dominated this series over the past decade.

Bishop O’ConnellGonzaga last lost to the Knights in 2008. Head Coach Del Smith has rejuvenated the O’Connell pro-gram and raised expectations for this season. Preseason predictions have them competing for a WCAC playoff spot.

DeMathaThe Stags won the WCAC last sea-son, recording a win over an injurty depleted Eagles squad along the way. Since 2010, the Eagles have won 4 of 6, but have lost the last two match-ups.

Bishop McNamaraThe Eagles have beaten the Mus-tangs in each of the last four sea-sons. Head coach Keith Goganious, who played for the Bills, Ravens and Jaguars in the NFL, enters his second season.

Eagles Enter Season Rankedin Top 25 Nationally

St. JohnsThis year marks the 90th meeting (including playoffs) since the Mod-ern Era began in 1928. The teams have split the last six games, with SJC winning the regular season and playoff games last year. Since 1981, Gonzaga is 25-11 against SJC.
