Learn to sew with heavier threads on the top of the machine and to use your decorative machine stitches. BEFORE COMING TO CLASS : sew a 9-Patch block using five 4” squares of color A and four 4” squares of color B. PRESS ALL SEAMS OPEN. SUPPLY LIST : o ½ yard plain or lightly patterned fabric o ½ yard backing fabric o ½ yard batting (NOTE: Dream Cotton Request or Warm and Natural are the only ones that will work with the threads). o Needles: Top stitching #100/16 for heavier threads. o Threads: o good quality regular weight cotton for bobbin o Heavier: YLI Jeans stitch or Aurifil Mako 12. These are the only ones that will work on top of the machine with the battings listed above. o Pins, prefer flower head pins, if you have. o Paper cutting scissors o Eight pieces of computer/typing paper o Medium size rotary cutting ruler and small mat or ruler and fabric scissors. o Contact shelf paper (solid color) or freezer paper o ¾” or 1” painter’s or masking tape o Size 1 safety pins for basting (1 1/8”) Ensure that your sewing machine is clean, oiled and in good working order and that you have a walking foot that works with your machine. If using a generic walking foot, give it a try before class. Bernina folks: bring your walking foot box with contents. Also bring your sewing machine manual, zig-zag and single stitch throat plate, if you have one, hands- free mechanism (knee lift) if your machine has one, even if you have never used it.
