What is food?
Food is an essential part of living. Among all human activities eating undoubtedly has the greatest effect on health! After breathing, eating is what we do most frequently during a lifetime. Food usually consists of plant or animal origin, that contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals, and is ingested and assimilated by an organism to produce energy, stimulate growth, and maintain life.
The Hidden Danger in Your Food• We consume geneticaly modified products without knowing it and without
knowing their effects upon our health.• We eat hormonized products only because they look better than natural one.• We are addicted to fast food ,because it is cheep ,tasty and it doesn’t take time to
cook it.
Genetically modified foods
• GM are foods derived from genetically modified organisms.Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques.
These techniques are much more precise than mutagenesis (mutation breeding) where an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. Other techniques by which humans modify food organisms include selective breeding(plant breeding and animal breeding), and somaclonal variation.
Hormones in food
It has been observed that there are several hormones (growth hormones) that help animals gain weight in no time. Inducing such hormones in the animals artificially, can reduce the amount of food as well as the time required for gaining weight.
Artificially induced hormones in animals can increase the dairy as well as meat production. During the 1930s various hormones like bovine growth hormone (bGH) estrogen were artificially induced in the pituitary glands of the cows that resulted in the large production of milk. Then in 1950, a synthetic form of estrogen called diethylstilbestrol (DES) was induced to fatten the chicken and cattle. DES was ruled out as it had cancer causing properties. Today, more than 80% of the cattle are raised by using such artificial hormones that help to increase their growth rate as well as the body mass. The US department of agriculture has given permission to use six hormones that can be used for cattle but not in the poultry.
These hormones Are: • Zeranol• Estradiol• Testosterone• Progesterone• Melengestrol acetate• Trenbolone acetate Among these six hormones, testosterone, estradiol and
progesterone are natural hormones and melengestrol acetate, trenbolone acetate and zeronol are synthetic hormones. Zeranol and estradiol can cause some serious health problems including ovarian cyst and cancer.
• Fast food is an integral part of our society, from the hot biscuit sandwiches and hash brown patties for breakfast to the burgers, fries and shakes of a quick dinner.
• Because it is relatively inexpensive, quickly prepared and easy to eat on the go, fast food is the ultimate culinary convenience, but that accessibility can lead to dangers that may impact a person’s health, quality of life and budget
Types of fast food danger There are three main fast food problems ,that can become dangerous to restaurant
patrons:• food borne illnesses• obesity from overindulgence• budgets taxed by the high cost of convenience
