The foundation of the “Tramonti-Crosta”

Bersaglieri Fanfare of Lonate Pozzolo dates

back to 1966. It‘s well-known in Italy and

abroad and has participated in many national

and International events with parades,

tournaments and concerts.

In 1986 Columbus Day was celebrated in

New York with a parade along Fifth Avenue, with the warmest welcome of the Italian

community in Brooklyn and Little Italy.

town between 1260 and 1567.

It now hosts the municipal library

Lonate Pozzolo owes its name to the Longobard rule (7th and 8th century) and the later Lonatis’ dominion over its territory. At the beginning of the 13th century, Lonate was a mainly rural centre and in the following centuries its wealth grew: open-air markets and fairs were organized and several nunneries originated, for which it became famous. Unfortunately, a bloody battle between Spanish troops – ruling over Milan territory – and French invaders – allied to the Piedmont- near the village of Tornavento in 1636 caused the flee from Lonate of its richest inhabitants and, therefore, its decline. The Unity of Italy in 1861 brought some industrialization (silk and cotton mills) and, therefore, a better wealth. However, a rapid growth in population forced part of the local youth to emigrate towards Argentina and California, USA, to find jobs. The 20th century saw a further increase in industrial activities and a heavy immigration, especially from the south of Italy. For the past ten years, Lonate has been directly involved in the enlargement of Malpensa Airport, a major airport in Italy since 1923. The town is located in a very industrialized area where textile, mechanic and aeronautic industries are the most relevant means of livelihood.
