Unfortunately, a bloody battle between Spanish troops ruling over Milan territory and French invaders allied to the Piedmont- near the village of Tornavento in 1636 caused the flee from Lonate of its richest inhabitants and, therefore, its decline. The Unity of Italy in 1861 brought some industrialization (silk and cotton mills) and, therefore, a better wealth. However, a rapid growth in population forced part of the local youth to emigrate towards Argentina and California, USA, to find jobs. The 20th century saw a further increase in industrial activities and a heavy immigration, especially from the south of Italy. For the past ten years, Lonate has been directly involved in the enlargement of Malpensa Airport, a major airport in Italy since 1923. The town is located in a very industrialized area where textile, mechanic and aeronautic industries are the most relevant means of livelihood.
