Where Can You Find Half theUnited States? On Facebook!

Is everyone in the country on Facebook yet? A report by e-Marketer says that in 2011, the social network will have 132.5 million U.S. users. That’s more than half the number of Internet users overall in the U.S., and about five times higher than the number of subscribers to Twitter. By 2013, e-Marketer predicts, 62 percent of all domestic Web users will have a Facebook profile—47.6 percent of the U.S. population. After that point, Facebook’s growth will probably peak domestically, although expansion is likely to continue around the globe.

A Kite Idea!In the 19th century, engineersdoubted they’d ever be able tobuild a bridge across theNiagara Falls. The problem: They couldn’t see any way toget a line from one side of the great gorge to the other so that they could begin the project. No boat could cross the river without being pulled over the powerful falls. The other common method, shooting a line from one shore to the other with a bow and arrow, was impossible because the gap was too wide.

He sponsored a kite-flying contest. The prize was $5 to whoever could maneuver a kite across the gorge and lower it to a height where someone on the other side could grab the string and use it to secure a line that joined the two sides. With that line in place, he could begin building the bridge.

The kite flew across a string, which they then used to cross materials to build a temporary bridge on.

Joke of the MonthThe teacher wrote on the blackboard, “I ain’t had no fun all summer.”

“Now Paul,” she said. “What shall I do to correct this?”

“Get a boy friend.” Paul replied!

Father’s Day History! The first Father’s Day was observed in 1910. It was the inspiration of Sonora Dodd, who hit on the idea while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon the previous year. Her own mother had died in childbirth when Sonora was 16. She helped her father, William Smart — a Civil War veteran who had moved his family to a farm in Washington State — to raise the newborn, along with her four other brothers. Sonora had long held her father in high esteem, but it was not until she was an adult with her own family that she realized the hardships and sacrifices he had made as a single parent. Sonora approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance with the idea of creating a day to honor fathers. She suggested that the observance take place on June 5th, her father’s birthday, but the alliance chose to make it the third Sunday in June.

Today, Father’s Day has become a day not only to honor fathers but also all men who serve as father figures, such as stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and male friends of the family.
