Bart Maes, founder of Amanprana:How it all startedin 1999 i sold my share in a medium-sized enterprise that specialized in petroleum products and kerosene heaters. i gave myself a seven year sabbatical, read 600 books on nutrition, attended conferences on nutrition, became a vegetarian and wrote articles on food and energy for journals both at home and abroad. i started Amanprana because my daughter had serious concentration issues at school and had developed an allergy to cocoa. After devoting much blood, sweat and tears

to research and by switching to omega oil, a cacao-free diet and exclusively eating organic foods, we managed to solve my daughter’s concentration disorder and her cocoa allergy. That proved to be a revelation, and i wanted to use this experience and the knowledge i had gained on nutrition to find a balance between commerce and giving something back to the community.

Amanprana launched with okinawa omega oil. i improved the omega composition of the omega oil my daughter took, enriched the omega blend with herbs, and introduced eight naturally-occurring types of vitamin e and a large amount of carotenes. My wife and i started off on a small scale in our living-room and garage, but it was not long before our home became too small and we were gradually given more shelf space in the shops. Then a friend gave me some literature on saturated fats and palm oil. My first thought was, ‘but surely saturated fats are unhealthy?’ i approached the reading material with scepticism, but within a few months my opinion had changed. i took an in-depth look at saturated fats and came to the conclusion that they contained many properties that were unknown to most people. in fact, i realised that saturated fats were actually extremely healthy. This conclusion was diametrically opposed to the conventional view in nutrition, but i decided to transfer that knowledge to anybody willing to listen. And so we started off with coconut oil and palm oil, and then the products followed each other in quick succession. Profits had ceased to be the primary motivation for me, with the concept of healthful nutrition now being the objective. our ‘save the sea’ promotional campaign was a logical next step. in sanskrit ‘aman’ means peace or tranquillity, while ‘prana’ refers to life force, which brings us to ‘serene vitality’. We were also one of the very first companies to use biodegradable labels.

▲ Hippocrates, painted here by artist Peter Engels, was a philosopher and the father of medicine. Engels sought inspiration from the remaining sculptures of Hippocrates. He painted the caduceus staff as a symbol of medicine, which symbolized peace, protection, healing, unity and reconciliation in classical Greece. www.peterengels.eu

▲ At Amanprana we always keep in mind the words of Hippocrates: ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’, because we believe in a holistic approach, taking into account the whole, rather than just the separate parts. Therefore we are strongly committed to keeping our products as unprocessed as possible and furthermore we do not use any isolates. Our products are all organic and vegetarian and, where possible, fair trade and fair world.

Food as medicineThat nutrition is the essence of health was a firm tenet of Hippocrates, philosopher and father of Western medicine. He placed the emphasis on hygiene for both the patient and the physician. Healthy eating and drinking habits, the importance of fresh air, the self-healing capacity of the body and ensuring proper balance (homeostasis) were the pillars of the therapeutic approach advocated by the Greek physician (c. 460 – c. 370 Bc). Hippocrates famously said: ‘Let food be thy medicine’. Mother Nature gives us foods that contain powerful and health-giving properties. The principal causes of Western ailments are food and lifestyle, while refined ingredients probably contribute to the root of most diseases and poor health suffered in the West. for example, when whole-wheat flour is refined into white flour, 80 percent of all minerals, 90 percent of all vitamins and nearly all the fibre are removed in the process. As a result our energy levels can no longer cope with our fast pace of life. Until the start of the 20th century healthy food underpinned all curative treatments. The radical schism between nutrition and health that occurred in the 20th century is why, in spite of massive advances in medicine, we are unable to prevent 70 percent of premature fatalities that result from Western diseases. i would like to conclude with a quote from the two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling: ‘optimum nutrition is the medicine of the future’.

’Good health isn’t simply a matter of finding the right drug or right operation, but a complex process of accepting responsibility for your own life.’

Yin&Yang and balanceYin and yang are polar opposites yet complementary and dependent on each other. indian and chinese medicine teaches that a person is in balance when both these forces are approximately equally present. Women are more yin while men are more yang, and people who are out of balance either have too much yin or too much yang. When yin dominates you must concentrate on yang, and vice-versa. As Marc elsen says in his polarity therapy, ‘Being unhealthy can be considered as a set of scales that is off-balance. The yin polarity on the one side must weigh as much as the yang polarity on the other side.’

▲ Carlo Petrini, the founder of the Slow Food Movement, wrote: ‘We must restore food to the center of our lives’. If we spent more time in the kitchen, if we bought our food more sensibly and if we knew where our food came from, both the body and the mind would surely be healthier.

What you should know about good healthORAC and antioxidants Antioxidants protect you against aging by attacking the aggressive free radicals. The quantity of antioxidants in food is expressed as an oRAc (oxygen radical absorbency capacity) value per 100 g = 3.53 us oz = 3.67 uk oz, with fresh vegetables, especially legumes, and fruits having a high oRAc value. substances with the highest score are herbs and some essential oils. The less an ingredient is processed, the higher its oRAc value. it is generally believed that we must consume 3,000 to 5,000 oRAc units a day in order to protect our bodies against free radicals.

Glycemic indexThe degree to which carbohydrates (sugars) in foods increase your blood sugar levels is expressed as a Gi value. Low Gi food (less than 50) keeps your blood sugar level in balance, but high Gi food (over 70) causes dramatic upward and downward fluctuations. dates, white bread and parsnips all have an extremely high Gi, giving you immediate energy but causing your sugar levels to dip soon after. in general we recommend that you consume low Gi food.

Bovis and vitalityThe vitality provided by a lettuce plucked fresh from the field is very different from that of an old and wilted one. But how can we measure that vitality? The french researcher André Bovis created a frequency scale that can be used to measure this energy. Healthy people have a value of 6,500 to 8,000 on the Bovis scale. When the Bovis

value is lower than that, you become susceptible to diseases and your energy levels decline. As the renowned dutchman Robert H. steeloper said, ‘foods with a Bovis value below 7,000 rob the body of energy and are illness-inducing, while those above 7,500 are energizing and can be considered as healthful. Above 9,000 and the foods actually have a cleansing and curative effect.’

’These days people spend so much money on computers, smart phones, holidays and cars, while they want to spend less and less on food. That’s a great pity, as we only have one body, which we must look after as well as possible. After all, you are what you eat. In my view Amanprana is the equivalent of the best quality products. The small premium you pay for them is more than worthwhile for the Amanprana products.’

The juice of the coconut tree can be transformed into a sugar as soft as honey… Nature created this product such that it could not be processed in factories. Palm sugar can only be produced in palm tree habitats. Local populations can easily turn the nectar into coconut blossom sugar. It is also an antidote against misery.' Gandhi, 3 May 1939.

    Gula Java and other sugars

in his book ‘The secret Life of Plants’ Peter Tompkins relates that the fresh juice of sugar cane contains 8,500 units of healthy nutrients. in fact, the roots of a sugar cane plant can extract nutrients from the soil at a depth of 4.5 meters, about 14ft. That’s a true superfood. But once it is processed into white or brown sugar, the number of healthy units goes down to zero.

isolated sugar contains hardly any nutrients or minerals, and for your body to absorb these empty sugar calories it relies on saliva, gastric and intestinal juices and enzymes. This means that at least five minerals and five vitamins are extracted from your body, including chromium, zinc and magnesium, thus robbing you of your natural vitamin and mineral reserves. The occasional treat of refined sugar does not pose a problem, but when white or brown sugar is consumed daily it is bad for your health, becomes an anti-food and a silent killer. But Gula Java is, just like the fresh juice of sugar cane, extremely good for you when used daily.

▲ When you refine the poppy plant you first get opium, then morphine and finally heroin – a chemical product. The same holds when you refine sugar beet or sugar cane. As William Dufty states in his excellent book, Sugar Blues, ‘Sugar blues is a state of depression, of melancholy overlaid with fear, ups and downs, physical discomfort, despair and a lack of confidence’. Banish those sugar blues with Amanprana’s Gula Java

What is ‘Gula Java’? Gula Java is coconut blossom sugar from Java. The sweet nectar of the coconut blossom is a much-cherished product that is harvested by tappers from high in the coconut trees. Heated in cauldrons over a wood fire, the nectar is stirred until it gradually turns into a delicious unrefined sugar with a sweetness and gentle caramel flavor you can enjoy at any time of the day.

How to use Gula Java?Gula Java coconut blossom sugar can be used as a healthy substitute for cane or beet sugar, agave, maple syrup and other syrups. You can sweeten your tea or coffee with it and rest assured that it is healthy, and it is delicious on baked apples or bananas, on pancakes, tarts, waffles, cakes or on a quark sandwich. it is also a perfect addition to cocktails (such as mojitos and caipirinhas). it makes an attractive sugared rim on a glass and serves as a great finish to recipes, while it adds authenticity to Asian dishes that contain Gula Java. it is also a great snack for some extra energy. Gula Java means sweetening without guilt. Gula Java gives you long-lasting energy without those sugar blues.

Gula Java is more than sugar

‘I have been trying to quit all refined cane and beet sugar for three years, including the so-called whole cane sugars. Since then I have been using Gula Java Brut. I feel 100 percent better and no longer suffer from sugar dips.’

Kris De Rouck, endurance athlete, Westerlo, Belgium

fair world coconut Blossom sugar, supplemental earnings for 850 familiesAmanprana works together with Lestari Mandiri and Hivos to obtain coconut blossom sugar. Lestari is an association that fights for small-scale farmers and their families in central Java. Hivos is a humanitarian organization that works towards a fair, free and sustainable world as well as equal opportunities for women. Because this project is about human rights we have called it fair world. The fair world project sees us working together with farmers’ associations in central Java, which ensure that the harvesting and production of our coconut blossom sugar is organic and in accordance with fair trade and fair world principles. They are members of the indonesia organic Alliance, which strives to create more organic produce in indonesia, and together we are aiming to supplement the income of 850 families in indonesia and protect their eco-habitat. The coconut trees in their gardens now yield their own harvest. The food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations (fAo) has called coconut blossom sugar the most sustainable type of sugar.

▲ In 1923, the year in which insulin was discovered, the ‘sugar blues’ melody was also composed: ‘Everybody’s singing the sugar blues. I’m so unhappy, I feel so bad. I could lay me down and die... You can say what you choose... But I’m all confused... I’ve got the sweet, sweet sugar blues... More sugar...’ Refined sugar plays poker with your emotions. Gula Java doesn’t.

Healthy performance drinks with Gula Java are 100 percent naturalAmanprana’s new performance drinks fit in perfectly with the new generation of sports drinks, containing a variety of carbohydrates (sugars/energy), a number of proteins (amino acids) and sufficient electrolytes (minerals). But Amanprana goes a step further, because Amanprana uses Gula Java. That means that our performance drinks are packed with energy and contain no refined sugars and no artificial sweeteners. All they contain is pure and healthy energy gifted by Mother Nature. furthermore, our performance drinks also contain a great many natural antioxidants. They also have an exceptionally high oRAc value, making them the only performance, sports or energy drinks in the world that improve your immunity and protect you from outside attacks both while performing and afterwards.

Why our performance drinks contain no stevia or agaveAmanprana champions the use of stevia leaves as a no-calorie sweetener, but these leaves may not be sold in europe. instead, the stevia sold is steviol glycoside, a highly processed and overly isolated sweetener extracted from stevia leaves that has a metallic taste. This is incompatible with the Amanprana philosophy: the whole is better than the separate parts.Amanprana does not advocate the use of agave syrup as a sweetener. Agave syrup is a highly processed side-product of the tequila industry, and it is regularly the subject of negative media reports due to its high levels of isolated fructose. Many health gurus believe that isolated fructose (Hfcs, high fructose corn syrup), as found in many soft drinks, is even worse for us than we currently suspect. A great deal of information on this subject can be found online.

▲ Give yourself and your children all the goodness that nature has to offer in unrefined form. Gula Java is healthy and crammed with energy. Healthy performance drinks containing Gula Java give you long-lasting energy, without the highs and lows thanks to the low glycemic index of Gula Java. For fewer lows while performing. Michael Phelps, the eight-time olympic swimming champion, drank chocolate milk during the olympic Games. New studies have confirmed that low-fat chocolate milk allows you to recover faster from intense physical exertion and that you can keep going longer than when drinking sports drinks. The James Madison University concluded that football players who drink low-fat chocolate milk (Gula Java cacao) suffer less from muscle degradation than those who drink conventional sports drinks. indiana University released a study demonstrating that cyclists could keep going 50 percent longer and would recover faster when drinking low-fat chocolate milk (Gula Java cacao) instead of sports drinks. Meanwhile Harrisonburg-based University in Virginia added some protein to high-carb sports drinks and discovered that the maximum exertion level increased by no less than 29 to 40 percent.

Gula Java earl Grey: a delicious drink and king of the antioxidantsGula Java Earl Grey: energy-boosterWhen combined with Gula Java, darjeeling black tea from india, Assam black tea from sri Lanka and bergamot from sicily all come together to form a unique performance drink. instead of hiding beneath the sheets until your espresso machine is ready, you can now get all the benefits of Gula Java earl Grey. You’ll love the taste, it will wake you up, and you’ll be ready to seize the day! Gula Java earl Grey gives you hours of energy and vitality, and thanks to the L-theanine and theine (caffeine) it is gentle and does not make you jumpy.

Gula Java Earl Grey: boosts your polyphenols and antioxidantsHealthy cells mean life energy. one of the reasons earl Grey has such a high antioxidant content is the combination of catechins and tannins, and earl Grey contains more tannin than Matcha. Tannins are polyphenols that are responsible for giving both tea and wine their specific taste, color and health benefits. it is these same tannins that cause Assam to go red and darjeeling to turn brown and that combat both oxidation and aging. Tannins are a blessing to your skin.

▲ Add 1 tablespoon of any Gula Java performance drink (Matcha, Safran, Earl Grey, Rooibos or Cacao) to warm or cold milk, water, cereal drink or fruit juice in a glass, your favorite mug or your drinking bottle. Add to soup, bread or pastries, or sprinkle over muesli, yoghurt, salads and prepared meals. Tip: create a delicious Gula Java Matcha Latte by adding Gula Java Matcha to a cereal drink or milk.

Gula Java Matcha: focus, inner peace, energy and plenty of antioxidantsStimulate your concentration levels. Be sharper when exercising, working or on the road, and improve your focus when studying or performing any other activities. Become less distracted and increase your concentration levels for better results. The natural combination of L-theanine protein and caffeine in Gula Java Matcha makes you sharper, more focussed and improves concentration.

While also enjoying greater inner peace. Matcha has been used as a ceremonial tea in Japan for centuries, and Zen Buddhists drink matcha to meditate and achieve self-awareness and inner peace. Matcha is Zen.

Gula Java Matcha gets you bubbling with energy. Gula Java is concentrated coconut blossom nectar that slowly releases energy, while matcha is the ground tea leaf of camellia sinensis. When you drink Gula Java Matcha you are drinking the whole leaf. Amanprana Matcha is slowly ground using a granite millstone (just 40 g/1.41 oz an hour) and we only use young and whole green tea leaves. That is ‘Kotobuki’ quality, which means ‘long life’ in Japanese.

Your daily dose of antioxidants in a cup. The active antioxidants in Gula Java Matcha are a natural and unique combination of four catechins, tannins, chlorophyll and a host of minerals and proteins. They boost your immunity and consequently your health. in fact, the antioxidative power of Gula Java Matcha is many times greater than vitamin c or e.

Matcha for children and students. Annick Walgraeve, physiotherapist at carpe diem: ‘My eight-year-old son, Arno, is a mischievous kid. He was very restless, could not sit still and was unable to concentrate at school. As a mother and physiotherapist i tried to cut down on his refined sugars and improve his nutritional intake. on my quest i discovered Gula Java Matcha, and i immediately noticed that his energy was more channelled and that his focus had improved. He also concentrates better at school and works faster, getting more work done and with an improved focus on tasks. We’ve also noticed that he is calmer when at home, and i no longer have that feeling of, “Aha, there’s our little AdHd-sufferer”. He’s just as ingenious as before, but he knows to hold himself back and has achieved a sense of balance. i’m simply glad that Gula Java Matcha has taken us a step closer to completing the picture.’

When you drink the imperial ‘Kotobuki’ tea superfood you drink the whole leaf and get more oRAc and energyImperial Kotobuki tea superfood for eternal vitalityAmanprana’s imperial Kotobuki was inspired by the unique traditional Japanese Matcha ceremony as it has been performed by Zen Buddhists for centuries. We created three delicious Kotobuki teas: Matcha, Rooibos and earl Grey. Amanprana Kotobuki tea is made of the whole, young and finest leaves of the Japanese camellia sinensis (Matcha), Aspalathus linearis from south Africa (Rooibos), and first flush darjeeling and Assam from india (earl Grey). The veins are expertly removed and the leaf is slowly ground by granite millstones until it is an ultrafine powder at a rate of just about 40 g = 1.41 oz an hour in order to retain the quality, flavor and nutrients. And so, when you enjoy a pot of Kotobuki tea, remember that it took over an hour to create. Kotobuki means ‘long life’ in Japanese. Amanprana has specially selected the very best balance between quality, flavor and nutritional value, and the antioxidant level, expressed in oRAc units, is exceptionally high. The polyphenols (including catechins and carotenoids) make up the largest group of protective substances in Kotobuki, while vitamin e, fibre, minerals, tannins, and 15 to 17 types of proteins (including all the essential ones) all contribute to turning Kotobuki into a superfood.

Kotobuki Matcha contains 137 times more EGCG catechins than green teain conventional green, earl Grey and Rooibos tea 85 percent of the nutrients are left in the teabag, but when drinking Amanprana’s traditional Kotobuki teas you’re drinking the whole leaf, as it were. This means the imperial Kotobuki tea is many times healthier than green tea, as you are consuming a multiple of the nutrients and you are drinking the whole (holistic consumption). And because we strive for the very best quality the taste is utterly sublime. it’s quite simply the best.

▲ ‘The region where the tea is grown and the length of time the leaves are steamed are determining factors when it comes to the quality of the matcha. A great many matchas – often of poor quality – are sold. Cheap matcha could never be good matcha, as it is often oxidised and non-organic. Amanprana Kotobuki Matcha is of the best possible quality.’ Ann Van Steenkiste, tea sommelier, Belgium.

▲ You can blend Kotobuki Matcha, Earl Grey and Rooibos in warm water, milk, fruit juices or cereal drinks – just stir well and enjoy. If you’d like to know how to ceremonially prepare Matcha, see our website www.noble-house.tk. You can also use the Kotobuki tea in a wide array of dishes or to enrich your meals. But it’s just as delicious on its own as an imperial tea.

When you drink green or black tea (left) you only consume the water-soluble 10 to 15 percent of the nutrients, with the rest thrown away. When you drink Kotobuki tea (right) you consume all of the nutrients, being the full 35 percent of water-soluble ones and the full 65 percent of non-water-soluble nutrients. You drink the entire leaf.

‘The Kotobuki teas are a blessing to your body and I use all three. Matcha for focus, earl Grey for enjoyment and Rooibos in the evening. They are of the very best quality, and I should know as I have spent years searching for the ultimate matcha. Kotobuki Matcha is greener, its taste more gentle, its fragrance more sublime and its nutritional value higher.’

Omegas to recharge the batteries of every one of your cellsWe are made of billions of cells, and the vitality of every one of those cells is largely dependent on the quality of the cell walls (membranes) and the protection they offer. cell walls are primarily made of fat, and sufficient quantities of omega-3 and 6 make them flexible and permeable so that they can absorb nutrients. They also ensure that the batteries of our cells can be recharged, and are responsible for conductivity and generating electric impulses. if you are omega-3 and 6 deficient you feel physically and mentally tired.

Johanna Budwig discusses recharging our batteries‘The bipolarity between fat (the cell casing) and protein (the cell nucleus) is fundamentally important to conserving all living cells and to their structure. This bipolarity is largely dependent on the presence of sufficient omega-3 and 6. A lack of omega-3 and 6 cripples vital cell functions. if the bipolarity between the nucleus and the membrane is destroyed by, for example, an omega-3 and 6 deficiency or by consuming partially or fully hardened fats (trans fats), this means there is no longer an electrical charge. in other words, the cell’s battery will be drained.’

okinawa omega is packed with essential fatty acids, vitamin e and carotenesOmega-3, 6, 7, and 9 are essential to our healthHealth-conscious people devote much attention to fruit and vegetables, but often overlook the fact that there are two essential fatty acids that are crucial to a healthy body – alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) of the omega-3 family and linoleic acid (LA) of the omega-6 family, neither of which your body can produce itself and which must be obtained from food. if your body does not get omegas it cannot be healthy. ALA and LA and omegas in general perform many vital processes.

lots of natural carotenes and vitamin Eomega-3 and 6 are highly sensitive oils pressed by Amanprana with great respect. The result is very little peroxidation. Amanprana moreover contains a great deal of natural carotenes and vitamin e, antioxidants and vitamins that protect the oil from oxidation as a result of light, oxygen and heat, both in the bottle and in our bodies. Amanprana is the only company in the world to combine eight types of vitamin e and carotenes with essential fatty acids (ALA and LA), and the inhabitants of okinawa know why.

I’ll live to 126Research published in May 2013 by National Geographic indicates that people who live to be over 100, as many okinawans do, remain physically active and healthy until the age of 91. People who reach the age of 80 only remain physically active and healthy until the age of 61. in other words, the older you get the shorter the period in which one can be inactive and suffer from ailments. By eating healthy, living sensibly, and with a bit of luck and the assistance of our genes, there is a realistic chance we might be blowing out 100 candles and only suffer from a short period of inactivity and disease (9 years instead of 19). At Amanprana we believe that is more than enough reason to learn from the habits of okinawans. okinawa omega oils are the result of our research and are likely confirmation of the National Geographic findings (New england centenarian study, Boston University), hopefully bringing us a step closer to our dream of aging actively, healthily and happily for as long as possible!

▲ Okinawa is a southern Japanese archipelago with a population of 1.2 million and with the world’s highest proportion of active and happy centenarians. US and Japanese scientists have studied some 600 of these centenarians over a period of 25 years. The book based on this study, The Okinawa Program, revealed that the 100-year-old Okinawans were lean and agile

Okinawa Omega Balance Delight: Cannabis sativa oil for omega balanceUdo erasmus, the pioneer behind omegas, wrote in his book Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill that: 'Hemp oil can be used for long periods of time to maintain a healthy omega balance without resulting in an omega deficiency or imbalance. Hemp oil has a better "long-term" composition, namely three parts omega-6 and one part omega-3. Besides, hemp oil contains nearly two percent GLA (gamma-linolenic acid)'. The hemp oil in Balance delight is enriched with sustainable red palm oil and wheat germ oil, as both are abundant in carotenes and vitamin e.

How to take it and how much to take? You can take as much okinawa omega as you like, but 1 teaspoon (5 g = 0.2 oz) will suffice for the recommended daily allowance of ALA and LA. for the optimal allowance and if you are suffering from a deficiency, you can take 1 to 2 teaspoons a day. if you take 1 teaspoon a day and are also eating healthily, then you will be super healthy and also have absorbed the optimal allowance in a good proportion. How do you take it? either off the spoon or in vegetable soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes or tomato sauce. do not fry with okinawa omega. only use cold. can be used by him, her, by the baby and by the centenarian.

The term ‘essential fatty acids’ is frequently misused‘Your body is the hero, and it manufactures some 50 fatty acids itself as it needs them. it converts the two essential fatty acids at a ratio of 5 percent to 30 percent into other fatty acids. The body can also manufacture saturated fatty acids from unsaturated fatty acids (omega-3, 6, 7 and 9) and vice versa. The body uses elongase and desaturase enzymes to make all the fatty acids it needs, except for two that it cannot manufacture – alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid (LA). Without these two fatty acids it is impossible to be healthy, and because we do not make them we must get them from our food. They are called the ‘parent essential oils’ by Amanprana and scientists such as Prof. Brian Peskin. ALA is the parent essential oil of omega-3 while LA is the parent essential oil of omega-6. The World Health organisation (WHo), Prof. Brian Peskin, Amanprana and many others all agree – parent essential oils are at the foundation. They can be found in plant-based sources before being partially extracted by fish and other animals. The 100 billion cell membranes in our bodies require these parent essential oils for a great many functions, one of which is ensuring that each cell absorbs enough oxygen.

The importance of the parent essential oils, AlA and lAWhy do we call them parent oils? Because ALA is the ‘mother’ of the omega-3 family and LA is the ‘mother’ of the omega-6 family of fatty acids. ALA and LA are the mother sources that the body can use to manufacture all the other fatty acids. And so they are the parent fatty acids or oils. We also call them essential because we need them but cannot manufacture them, and so get them from our food. Together they are the only two ‘parent essential oils’ that human beings require. fish oil manufacturers and their pawns often call ePA and dHA essential or semi-essential oils. This is not true, and they are only two of the 50 fatty acids that we require, but that our bodies can manufacture, and so are not essential. Their importance is exaggerated, and many studies have provided contrary results. ePA and dHA are derivatives of the parent essential oils, and derivatives are no essential fatty acids. fish oil contains very little of the only two parent essential oils LA and ALA, and only contains the omega-3 derivatives ePA and dHA. This is why fish oil is a poor source of the omega-3 parent essential oil ALA. Plant-based omega-3 and 6 is consequently superior to the fatty acid derivatives in fish oil. Let there be no doubt about this.

▲ Bart Maes, founder of Amanprana: ‘Science is decisive for me, and not one population study has demonstrated an imbalance between omega-3 and 6, nor an excess of omega-6. I have had to explain thousands of times why Amanprana recommendations with regard to omega-3 and 6 differ from what the crowd says, which is misinforming us by stating we consume too much omega-6 and too little omega-3. This stance has been largely instigated

by the fish oil industry and their numerous pawns. They are moreover trying to exaggerate the importance of DHA and EPA (omega-3 derivatives). These are not essential fatty acids, and your body can make them itself, so let us not exaggerate their value. Amanprana advocates more plant-based omega-3 (ALA) and more unrefined omega-6 (LA). The quality of the oil is more important than its origin.’

'It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.'-Mark Twain-

‘Many people believe that the benefits of omega-3 are much greater than those of omega-6. Nothing is further from the truth. We need both, but at least twice as much of omega-6.’

Brian Peskin, Professor, nutritional expert & author, Houston, USA

Easy: ORAC herb mix with Khoisan fleur de sel, seaweed and sumac‘This super mix of nine herbs containing the greatest antioxidant values, four mineral-rich seaweeds, revitalising sea salt – Khoisan fleur de sel – and the powerful sumac berry gives you a taste bomb with reduced salt content,’ says chantal Voets, chef and co-founder of Amanprana. ‘season all your dishes in an instant, and without a thought you will have the perfect tasting meal.’ You’ll get so much more taste,

aroma and health than you do with the standard salt-and-pepper combination. Available in mild and hot (chilli) varieties, grind or crush the oRAc Botanico mix for even more flavor and aroma. Add the mix to soups, sauces, vinaigrettes, freshly squeezed juices, smoothies, fruit salads and desserts to deliciously enrich them. or use the oRAc Botanico mix as a bouillon or for a mother sauce. Large helpings of natural antioxidants, 80 minerals, trace elements and 1,000 micronutrients – along with a deacidifying and cleansing effect for a healthy body and a radiant look.

Sumac: healthy on the inside, beautiful on the outsideNutritional deficiencies, acid and oxidants all contribute to the aging process. Thanks to the oRAc Botanico mix, you now have a natural remedy against aging while you’ll also look radiant. for when you nourish body and spirit alike, beautiful skin is the visible result. And your body will also be able to better defend itself against outside influences. oRAc Botanico mix contains the nine herbs with the greatest oRAc value, plus the Turkish sumac berry, which has the highest oRAc value of all fruits (oRAc 312,000, almost 100 times more than goji berries). The oRAc value is the amount of antioxidants contained in foodstuffs, which combat the aging process your body and skin undergoes. When you use the oRAc Botanico mix both you and your skin are well-protected.

A natural boost of 80 mineralsYour body, spirit and skin require at least 31 minerals and trace elements (minerals that we need in smaller quantities). Not only do our bodies not produce these

minerals, but they cannot be replaced by medicines, while the food we eat today contains far fewer minerals and trace elements than it once did, thanks to intensive agriculture and aquaculture. cultivated vegetables easily contain less than half the amount of minerals as those that grow wild. Lettuce, tomatoes, spinach and cabbage all contain 70 percent fewer minerals today than they did in 1948, while canned beans contain 25 percent fewer minerals on average than fresh beans, and so on. Herbs and seaweeds are the richest source of minerals. Minerals are the facilitators of the enzymatic processes in our bodies, providing structural elements, connective tissue, bones, nails and teeth, and they help our billions of cells to communicate with each other. The oRAc Botanico mix will give you all the minerals you need.

It’s no ordinary sea salt, it’s Khoisan fleur de selKhoisan fleur de sel is a unique coarse sea salt found on the west coast of south Africa, where the grandeur of the south African flora meets the oxygen-rich and powerful south Atlantic ocean. it is sea salt in its purest form, naturally filtered. The Atlantic sea salt slowly makes its way underground through a 2000m / 6561ft thick barrier of limestone, quartz, and clay and shell beds into a salt lake where it gains vitality, solar energy and regenerative powers. Measuring between 16,600 and 24,700 on the Bovis scale, it is significantly higher than Himalayan salt. it is harvested by hand and dried and vitalized in the sun.

▲ Chantal Voets created the ORAC botanic mix with a great deal of love. ORAC Botanico mix adds finesse to all your dishes and gives you health and life energy. It has a gentle, well-rounded and harmonious flavor with a frequency pattern that instils renewed vigor in you. The power of the Botanico mix can be found in its deacidifying properties and electric conduction for communication between your cells.

▲ The fluid contained in the human body that is not in the cells (extracellular fluid) contains the same minerals as those found in the sea. The oceans are, as we know, where all life on earth started off. Seaweeds accumulate minerals, making them easily absorbable by humans. That’s why Amanprana enriched the ORAC Botanico mix with four types of seaweed.

‘Seaweed, herbs and sea salt are a rich source of minerals that can be absorbed naturally and easily. In balance and in the correct proportions, just as we need them.’

Paul Bergner, professor of clinical nutrition and herbal medicine. Author of the book Healing Minerals.

Amanprana organic coconut fibre for regular bowel movements and low calorie intakeFibre is essential to easy bowl movementYou need 10 g = 0.36 oz of fibre at every meal in order to have regular bowel movements, as well as plenty of water and exercise. A lot of people do not do this and frequently suffer from stomach ache and irregular and/or hard and difficult-to-pass stools. This is not healthy, and consuming coconut fibre regularly at mealtimes ensures that you will have regular and easy bowel movements and a flat belly.

coconut fibre also cleans your intestines, thus giving you increased resistance and more energy. coconut fibre accelerates the ejection of waste and cholesterol from the body, improving your health. one full

tablespoon of coconut flour contains just 32 calories and 5 g of fibre. Amanprana’s coconut fibre has a delicious and gentle coconut flavor. coconut flour contains far fewer calories and more fibre than other fibre-rich products.coconut fibre primarily contains insoluble fibre, which acts like a sponge in the large intestine. This can act in two ways: either it thickens loose stool or softens hard and dry stool and makes it more malleable. soluble fibre in coconut encourages healthy peristalsis.

Gluten-free so your gut feels greatcoconut fibre contains no gluten, hardly any phytic acid that could hinder mineral absorption, and no cyanide to inhibit calorie burning. What it does contain is the eight essential proteins and healthy McTs that stimulate mineral absorption. The first step to good health is healthy digestion.

Which types of gluten-free flour are good and which are bad?Healthy gluten-free flours are naturally gluten-free. flours where the gluten has been removed will, when consumed regularly, deplete your body of energy and minerals. Healthy gluten-free flours are milled from coconut, rice, buckwheat, quinoa, amaranth, maize, millet and sorghum. Gluten-free flours that Amanprana recommend you do not eat regularly are: soya, tapioca and all types of gluten-free flour that is mechanically processed, made from wheat, rye, spelt, barley, teff and others.

use Amanprana’s coconut fibre to introduce large amounts of fibre or as gluten-free flourUse coconut fibre for bread, pastries, biscuits, snacks and anything else as a gluten-free flour with a large amount of fibre. substitute 10 to 15 percent of your standard flour with coconut flour (fibre) and add the same amount of water. Available in packets of 500 g = 1.10 lbs and 1 kg = 2.20 lbs. To gain from its wealth of fibre, take our coconut fibre three times a day at mealtimes: - as a fibre drink: stir 1 to 2 tablespoons into a glass (8.5 fl oz) of water, juice, shake, smoothie, chocolate milk, tea or coffee- to sprinkle: sprinkle 1 to 2 tablespoons in sauce, yoghurt, muesli, oatmeal, desserts or over your meal. When suffering from diarrhoea, take coconut fibre dry. if you’re concerned about a regular bowel movement, then take with liquid.

a pitcher (or use a blender) and pour in the orange and grapefruit juice. Deseed the dates and chop them finely. Peel the pineapple and cut it into small cubes, then add the Kotobuki Matcha. Mix well or blend to get a fibre-rich drink.

A new plant will grow out of the germ, and it stores vitamins, minerals, proteins, healthy omega-3, 6 and 9, fibre and many other healthy nutrients and antioxidants, such as lecithin, betaine and 800 mg of alpha lipoic acid per 100 g. stir it into a drink, muesli, yoghurt, sauces, pasta, rice, potatoes and over vegetables, salads or on bread (do not heat it, only add after cooking). or eat it on its own – between 1 and 6 tablespoons a day. The fold-over bag protects the wheat germ from exposure to light and no part of it has been irradiated. Two varieties are available in 400 g / 14.11 ounce packs. Raw: 100 percent natural, 100 percent active enzymes. Refined: thermally debittered but not toasted.

Raw food is rich in enzymes, has a high Bovis value and is full of chi life energy. This means that you should eat more raw food, as we already eat too much heated food. When heating food to over 40 °c / 104 ºf the enzymes become inactivated, life energy is lost, the Bovis value sinks and nutrients are destroyed.

▲ Alfred Vogel: ‘I am convinced that nature provides us with everything we need for protecting and maintaining our health.’ Bart Maes: ‘The closer it is to nature, and the less processed and refined our food is, the better it is for humans.’ Processing or refining food is the main culprit when it comes to Western diseases.

Bart Maes’s four basic rules on oil1. Healthy oils are just as important as fruit and vegetablesWe have to completely get rid of the idea that oils are just tools for preparing food. We actually need more calories from healthy oils than from proteins.

    2. The quality of the oil is more important than what type it isonly use extra virgin (unheated, only mechanically pressed, with a naturally low acidity). Refined oils are more harmful than refined sugar. You can recognise refined oils because they taste neutral and the refining process has deodorised them.

    3. vary oils just like you vary your fruit and vegetablesA carrot is not the same as lettuce, and eating only wholesome carrots is too one-sided. The same holds for oils. What we say is that you must vary your intake, and that includes varying your oils.

    4. Some oils can be heated, others can only be used coldoils with a high PUfA content (polyunsaturated fatty acids) must only be used for cold dishes. They are not stable and become very harmful when heated. oils that are heated should contain as little PUfAs as possible.

NB: Margarine is often referred to as plastic butter. Never use it. it is a cheap imitation invented during World War ii when butter was too expensive. The healthy substances in the oil are sold at a high price to the pharmaceutical industry, with the remainder deodorised, refined and bleached to serve as the basic ingredient for margarine.

▲ In the classical Indian written language Sanskrit, ‘aman’ means serenity or tranquillity, while ‘prana’ refers to vitality, life energy, which brings us to ‘serene vitality’. The elephant symbolises a dormant, non-aggressive force and embodies wisdom, tolerance and peace. It represents happiness. Elephants are herbivores, and do not eat meat or fish, nor do they kill. It’s a wonderful philosophy for future generations.

▲ Most margarines are made of palm oil. The carotenes in the palm tree fruit make them red. So why do you never find red margarine? Because margarines contain refined

palm oil. Many nutrients, including carotenes, sterols and vitamin E, are refined out of the oil and sold as supplements.

extra virgin margarine with coconut, olive and red palm oilslove your heart and live healthy with Cocos+Olive+Palmin cocos+olive+Palm Amanprana brings together the best extra virgin oils of three worlds – cold-pressed coconut oil from Asia, extra virgin olive oil from spain and unrefined palm oil from colombia. Because fats contain unique components when in their natural state, they benefit both your vitality and your health. spread them on bread instead of margarine. extra virgin coconut oil is jam-packed with McTs (medium-chain triglycerides), and is easy to digest and antimicrobial. our extra virgin olive oil has a large number of polyphenols and is a healthy cornerstone of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Meanwhile, extra virgin palm oil is high in vitamin e and carotenes, which benefit your body, mind and skin. This melange of oils is naturally high in sterols without any being artificially added. Conventional margarine is not naturalAll margarines are made from refined oils. The purpose of the chemical refining process is to create an odourless and cheap butter-substitute. The oil is obtained using solvents, and is degummed and processed using base substances, bleached to get rid of the grey color and deodorized to get rid of the smell. Gasmasks are frequently used during its manufacture. Minerals and vitamins (e, d and K) are lost, while toxic hexane, nickel or cadmium are used to process the margarine. By-products are created, including harmful PAHs, free radicals and trans fatty acids. emulsifiers are also added, and water is often introduced to make the margarine even cheaper. colorants and preservatives are also added (the emulsifier e 491, chemically obtained monoglycerides and diglycerides in the form of emulsifier e 471, the preservative e 200, the acidulant e 330, the chemical preservative e 320 and the colorant e 160). sometimes chemical variants of vitamins e, d and A are also added.

▲ Margarine was created in 1869 in a laboratory and was originally intended to fatten up animals. At first the fattened turkeys died, and later the animal fats were replaced with vegetable ones, and it was discovered how they could be hardened. Partially hydrogenated (hardened) fats become trans fats. At that time margarine was known as ‘artificial butter’ and was white in color. During World War I butter became scarce and margarine was all the rage for human consumption.

A world of difference between extra virgin and deodorized organic coconut oildeodorized coconut oil is made from copra. small companies in Asia dry the coconuts in the sun or smoke them to turn them into copra. You can smell the overwhelming copra odor from a long way off. chickens and other birds as well as goats and dogs walk all over the copra, while the humidity and frequent storms slow the drying process, causing it to mold and ferment. The copra is then sent to the refinery where it is pressed, refined, bleached and deodorized. Amanprana has witnessed the process in indonesia, sri Lanka, the Philippines and elsewhere. The high temperatures generated when pressing caramelises the sugars, which bind to the proteins (this is the Maillard reaction). The coconut oil, which has now turned brown, is then bleached using carbon filters, after which the odor is pressed out of the oil using high pressure steam. it is a cheap process as enormous volumes can
