2 Food Outreach | SPRING 2018

Lauri Hardy, RN, has been

volunteering with Food Outreach

for over 20 years, and began

volunteering with us during the

days when Food Outreach was

based in the basement of Union

Avenue Church.

Lauri is currently a nurse in the

Mercy Cancer Center in Festus,

Missouri. Through working in

the Cancer Center, she saw

that some of her patients face

financial struggles. Some

patients are unable to take

care of their bills and have no

resources to purchase food with

the medically-recommended

nutrients. They also lack help

with meal preparation and

access to professional nutrition

counseling, all the while battling

the life threatening disease of

cancer. Lauri began making

referrals to Food Outreach, but

found that some of her patients

were struggling to even get gas

money to drive to our Center, so

Lauri took it upon herself to begin

volunteering to pick up food for

these clients.

Nutritious food is critical for

patients with cancer, “Food is

fuel for the body…it helps in their

cancer treatments”, says Lauri.

When asked why she has been

volunteering with Food Outreach

for so long, Lauri responds, “I just

like to help. It is my God given

talent. It gives me a way to help

my patients beyond my job skills,

and allows them to not have the

stress of preparing and cooking

meals.” Lauri says that her patients

are very grateful for the food from

Food Outreach and they also

appreciate her extra efforts.

We are so grateful for Lauri’s

passion, kindness and time in

volunteering to help some of

our clients receive the nutritious,

scratch-made meals and

groceries from Food Outreach.

5 Food Outreach | SPRING 2018

Country Cocktails, Orlando’s Catering: Sam Orlando, Jr., former Food Outreach Board Member, long-time volunteer and donor, hosted his annual “Country Cocktails” event on November 17th at the Lodge at Grant’s Trail. Country Cocktails raised more than $7,325 for Food Outreach! We are grateful to Orlando’s Catering, Sam and all of his Friends of Food Outreach – FOFO’s – for their years of supporting our mission.

Lennon’s 8th Birthday: Last October, Lennon requested canned goods and cash donations for Food Outreach rather than gifts for his 8th birthday. We are deeply touched and inspired by his kindness and are reminded of how much good there really is in this world. Pictured left to right are Steve, Lennon, Jilly and Angel Malan.

Facebook Birthday Fundraiser: Mary Sue Rosenthal, Food Outreach’s Director of Operations, celebrated her 60th birthday by inviting her family and friends to a Facebook Fundraiser and raised $3,243 to support our services. Mary Sue’s Facebook “event” drew attention from folks in Australia, Belgium, England, Germany and the U.S., bringing our mission to the attention of many new donors.

Show Me Bears St. Louis a social and charitable fundraising organization, raised $35,000 for local HIV/AIDS agencies and presented Food Outreach with a check for $10,000. In addition to their years of philanthropic support, these Big-Hearted Bears have volunteered in our nutrition center, the kitchen and at our Saturday Cook and Packs for years!

Rich Kluesner, former Food Outreach Treasurer and Board Member, hosted a Monday Hot Lunch program and inspired friends to donate over $2,500 to support our work.

Check out what Friends of Food Outreach (FOFOs) have been doing to support the lives of our clients!

Michael and Adam Lunter married in the fall and invited their guests to make gifts to Food Outreach in lieu of wedding gifts. We are thrilled that Adam and Michael, a Red Apron volunteer, celebrated their special day through their love and support of our mission, which resulted in gifts raised totaling $1,966.00.

12th Annual Cranksgiving: Over 700 people from all over the St. Louis region turned out the morning of November 5th at the Schlafly Tap Room to begin the 12th annual Cranksgiving ride. Sponsored by our long-time partner, BWorks, this annual event brings out cyclists who ride anywhere from 5 to 26 miles to a series of grocery stores, buying non-perishable food items along the way to donate to Food Outreach.

Support for our services included 8,415 cans; over $1,600 from individual donors; a gift from Tiny Little Monster of $500; a donation from food sales of $423 from Schlafly; great interviews aired on St. Louis TV stations and tons of hard work from over 50 volunteers! Whether you attend Cranksgiving every year or want to attend for the first time, this early November event reminds all of us about the amazing services Food Outreach provides to thousands of neighbors and community members and demonstrates through hundreds of riders and volunteers alike that the missions of Food Outreach and BWorks are supported by our region.

Food Outreach celebrated our 2017 Main Ingredient award recipients on November 29 in the Moulin Centennial Ballroom. Pictured here (left to right) accepting on behalf of their organizations:

Siteman Cancer Center: Nick Fisher, Executive Director of Research & Business Administration

Enterprise Holdings Foundation: Marie Artim, Vice President, Talent Acquisition, Enterprise Holdings Inc.

Sigmond & Marie P. Baer Charitable Trust, Justin Meyer, Trust Managing Director, U.S. Bank

BWorks Cranksgiving Volunteers: Wayne Brinkman, BWorks Board President

Do you have a special occasion coming up in 2018? Would you like to impact the lives of our existing clients and the hundreds of new clients we will serve in 2018?Your celebration can impact the nutritional needs of individuals who come to us hungry and fighting their illnesses. Think Bat Mitzvahs and Birthdays; Anniversaries or Annual Family Reunions; Pet Adoptions and Prom Parties – for these or any other celebrations, please contact Marcia Whelan at (314) 652-3663 ext. 118 or [email protected]
