Furness is a Georgian house of great character in the heart of Co. Kildare. Built in about 1740 for Richard Nevill, it was attributed by the late Knight of Glin to Francis Bindon, the architect and portrait painter who created some of Ireland’s most elegant country houses, including Woodstock and Castlemorres in Co. Kilkenny; he also collaborated with Richard Cassels on the design of Russborough, which he completed after Cassels’ death in 1751. Additions were made later in the century, including the fine plasterwork by Michael Stapleton in the drawing-room.

Following the death of a later Richard Nevill in 1822 Furness passed to [edit] the Beauman family, and in 1897 was bought by N.J. Synnott. By this time it had become dilapidated, and the new owner carried out a thorough restoration, while retaining the character of the original building. In 1962 the view from the entrance front was embellished with a dramatic addition – a column surmounted by the figure of Mercury, formerly at Dangan in Co. Meath (the boyhood home of the Duke of Wellington) and brought to Furness as a 21st birthday present to David Synnott from his father.

In the 1980s Furness featured in the TV adaptation of the Irish RM stories of Somerville and Ross, in which it appeared as Castle Knox, the home of Sir Valentine and Lady Knox and their daughter Sally. David Synott sold the house in 1987 and it became the home of Patrick and Louise Guinness in 1994.

Patrick is the son of the Hon. Desmond

Guinness and his first wife Mariga (the Princess

Marie Gabrielle von Urach), co-founders of the Irish

Georgian Society; Louise was a noted designer of

classical interiors in London. Together they reroofed

the house and arranged a light and cheerful theme

for Furness, including paint schemes, wallpapers,

rugs, lamps and four-poster beds.

As their 4 children have ‘flown the nest’, Mr

and Mrs Guinness have decided to downsize and

sell their home and many of the contents. The sale

includes period furniture, paintings and drawings,

wonderful silver and objets d’art, rare examples

of carriages and coaches, garden furniture, and

statuary etc., A fine library of books, important

manuscript letters and maps, which give an insight

into Patrick’s interest in local and Irish history

relating to Irish politics going back to the patriot and

Irish Whig parties of the 1780s to the present day.

Many of these are heirlooms of the Guinness

and Mitford families (Diana Mitford was Patrick’s

grandmother) or come through Mariga’s Scottish,

Norwegian and German ancestry. Moreover,

Desmond and Mariga bought many antiques, books

and papers of Irish antiquarian interest during

the 1950s and 1960s, a period when dispersal

sales were being conducted at many Irish country

houses, including some of the most important such

as Carton, Castletown, Gormanston Castle, and St

Anne’s Clontarf.

“The Spirit of Justice,” A Figure of Erin, representing Ireland as a female figure holding a harp., O.O.C., 102cms x 76cms (40” x 30”), signed and inscribed ‘Caroline Norton, A Study for Justice in the House of Lords.’The harp here is of Irish origin, and has striking similarities to that depicted in Maclise’s mammoth oil in the National Gallery, “The Marriage of Aoife and Strongbow” (1)Provenance: Thought to have been acquired by the 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava , Caroline Norton was the younger sister of his mother Helen Blackwood , Baroness Dufferin and Clandeboye. The picture remained at Clandeboye until the 1960’s when there was a sale there and it was acquired by Mariga Guinness (Princess Marie Gabrielle of Urach) and thence by descent to the current owner, her son, Patrick Guinness : Exhibited at the NPG London in 1972.Caroline Norton also had an Irish connection, being a granddaughter of the playwright Richard Brindsley Sheridan. She was one of three sisters, collectively referred to as the ‘Three Graces’ due to their combined beauty and accomplishments. Caroline’s eldest sister, Helen, married Price Blackwood, the 4th Baron Dufferin and Clandeboye. Through her, Caroline became

the aunt of Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava who was to become the 3rd Governor General of Canada,8th Viceroy of India and was the British Ambassador to Russia,Ottoman Empire, Italy and France during his long and successful diplomatic career. Robertson, Archt., and employed to make drawings of the ancient buildings in Co. Kilkenny, bits of scenery and residences - he was 2 or 3 years at this work in conjunction with John Gibbs (see Antiquities and Scenery of the County Kilkenny, publs. by J.G. Robertson, Kilkenny 1851). He went back to England and committed suicide. He was married to a sister in law of Colonel Brown who was sometime head of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Miller published, Description of the Cathedral Church of Ely, with account of the Conventual Buildings etc., with numerous plts. L. 1807. 512 The Francis Johnston-Speaker Clock A highly important and monumental mahogany Longcase Clock, crested with a scallop shell and flanked with figure and hound to one side, and a cherub with a medici lion, on a leaf wreath moulded arch and trellis panel, applied with the Johnston Coat of Arms and motto reading “Nunquam Non Paratus” above a later brass and steel dial, signed J. Waugh & Son, Dublin, with Roman and Arabic numerals on the chapter ring, a subsidiary dial for seconds, two key squares, date aperture and two smaller dials for chimes, the musical mechanism playing a brass pinned barrel, and fifteen graduating steel bells, flanked to either side with a cluster column, headed with ornate stylized Doric capitals, each with a hanging wreath and deep carved side trellis panels, all above a brass inlaid door with serpentine top and a centre aperture with glazed panel inside a leaf carved moulded frame with fleur-de-lis finial, flanked with canted corners and carved female caryatids, on a conforming acanthus leaf moulded canted plinth, and a stepped moulded base, 9’9” x 44” (297cms x 112cms). J. Waugh & Son Dublin, The Irish Houses of Parliament

Speaker’s Clock

James Waugh was a member of a well-known family of clock makers. He worked in Armagh from 1785 until 1805 when he moved to Dublin. He produced an ‘astronomical’ clock for use in Armagh Observatory, circa 1793., and assisted Robert Hogg in making an astronomical quadrant with a 35 inch radius (Hogg was later an assistant astronomer at Armagh). In Dublin he produced clocks from 157 James Street under the name ‘Waugh & Sons’ as well as ‘James Waugh’ (this latter nomenclature was in operation between 1805 and 1815). From 1820 until 1824 he operated from 24 James Street and, in 1825, moved to 40 Aungier Street. In 1826 a final move took him to 42 Aungier Street. He is known to have made the works for a Longcase Clock 9 feet 8 inches high, by 3 feet 8 inches wide that was in the Irish Houses of Parliament**. Francis Johnston of Kilmore*** MRIA (1760 - 1829) was the second son of William Johnston of Armagh. On the death of his older brother, Richard Johnston of Kilmore (1759 - 1806), without issue, Francis became the head of his family and entitled to the undifferenced Arms, as displayed on the superstructure of the Clock****.

The Parliament House was sold in 1803 to the Bank of Ireland for £40,000. The conversion into the Bank’s headquarters was started the following year and completed in 1811. Francis Johnston was the architect of the alterations.

Between 1807 and 1814 Richard Stewart executed the carvings in the Chapel Royal at Dublin Castle, which had been designed by Francis Johnston and the unusual shape of the shield for the Johnston Coat of Arms, which was added to the Speaker’s Clock, is identical in form, to those for the Viceroys of Ireland which Stewart carved in the Chapel Royal, Dublin.A carillon, or musical clock. The mechanism has 15 bells and 30 hammers playing airs, self-chiming and speed control playing every three hours. The fly or governor 8 leaves 0 1/2.The distance of the great wheel between shoulders in 6½ inches. All others are 4¾ inches except the fly pinion.The cylinder is 16 in long and the wheel is 0 3 1/4, 72 teeth, 0 5 in excluding pinion.The largest bell is 0 6 in. The smallest is 1¾ in.The bells are stamped R. Wells Albourne of Wiltshire, who is listed in Bells of England, by Tom Ingram, published by David Charles, 1954.

** The first Astronomer of the Observatory, Reverend Dr. J.A. Hamilton, was appointed in July 1790, and as an endowment for the Astronomer, Primate Robinson gave twenty acres of land and the estate of Derrynaught. Several instruments, including a Ramsden transit instrument and meridian circle, a Troughton equatorial telescope and three clocks, were ordered at the Primate’s expense. However, owing to the Primate’s death before receipt of all the instruments the two Ramsden instruments

never came to Armagh, Compensating for the non arrival of the Ramsden transit instrument an Armagh watchmaker, Mr. James Waugh, constructed one, and observations with it commenced in July 1793 (Stuart 1819). Some results with this instrument were published in the Transactions of the Royal Irish Academy (Hamilton 1810).

**** Kilmore House, Richhill, County Armagh (Johnston IFR) a 3 story Georgian block, given 2 curvilinear Jacobean-style gables and mullioned oriels, between which 3 bays of the original elevation remain as they always were, complete with the astragals in the sash windows; the adjoining elevation also remained Georgian. The interior was also remodelled, presumably at the same time: the hall has a screen of tapering wooden piers, incorporating the stairs, which have a handrail of carved wood panelling. The dining room has a Victorian Gothic chimney piece of marble. Seat of the Johnstons of whom Francis Johnston, the architect, was a younger son, (from page 174 of “A Guide to Irish Country Houses” by Mark Bence-Jones, published by Constable, London 1978 revised edition 1988, 2nd revised edition 1990).

John’s first two wives had died childless. He was a courtier to the early Hanoverians, with links back to the Stuart Queen Anne, in a time of transition. He was created 1st Earl of Ashburnham and 1st Viscount St. Asaph in 1730, when this portrait was painted. He is holding his earl’s coronet.His father John was created 1st Lord Ashburnham in 1689 and died in 1710. The family lived at Ashburnham Palace in Sussex and some were M.P.s. for Hastings. His great-grandfather John (d. 1671) had helped Charles I escape in 1647 and was with him when he was executed in 1649. 18 generations earlier, Philip Ashburnham and his father Bertram were executed (being office holders) by the Normans in 1066. Rare. (1) A plan of outstanding importance - the earliest to portray Dublin on a large and detailed scale. The engraved views are among the first existing of the City. An early 19th Century Irish flintlock Rifle, by George Turner of Dublin, with walnut stock and contemporaneous inscribed silver plate “Sir Thomas Picton”, possibly Military Issue. (1)

* By tradition reputed to have been carried by Sir Thomas Picton at Waterloo.

Note: Sir Thomas Picton (1758-1815) was a career soldier renowned for his severity, courage and foul temper. As governor of Trinidad from 1797 to 1803 he sought, with the aid of a tiny garrison, to impose order on the anarchic population. He was soon able to report that “perfect tranquillity prevailed throughout the colony”, but his excessive use of imprisonment, cruel punishments and the death penalty resulted in his being recalled and put on trial in London. The proceedings were followed avidly by the British public and although he was eventually exonerated his reputation remained blighted.

Picton served in the disastrous occupation of Flushing and in the Peninsular War, where he commanded Wellington’s 3rd Division with such determination that it was nicknamed “the fighting division”. He fought with distinction at the assaults on Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, despite suffering from sickness and wounds. At the battle of Waterloo he commanded the 5th Division and was in the act of rallying his troops to repel a massive French infantry charge when he was struck on the temple by a musket ball and killed.

Picton was the most senior officer killed at Waterloo and is the only Welshman buried in St Paul’s Cathedral. A stern disciplinarian and sometimes too impetuous in the field, he was also an intelligent and effective commander; Wellington famously said of him: “I found him a rough foul-mouthed devil as ever lived - but no man could do better in different services I charged him with.”

616 A.L.s. from The Prince of Wales to the Duke of Leinster, 1797 Manuscript: A single page letter dated 17 July 1797, signed ‘George P.’ and addressed to the Duke of Leinster. As a m/ss, w.a.f. The second Duke of Leinster was a supporter of Grattan, the Patriot Party and the introduction of liberal measures for Ireland. In 1797, however, the government introduced harsh legislation to suppress the United Irishmen. In this letter the Prince (eldest son and eventual successor of George III) thanks the Duke and other Irish Whig leaders for their letter, which presumably expressed concern over the government’s repressive measures: he states his deep interest in the fate of Ireland, his continued supports for conciliation ‘as best suited to the generous temper of the Irish nation, and his regret at the course that has been taken. * A uniquely important letter on Irish affairs written by the heir to the British throne. Holland (H.) Architect. A small pocket book (9cms x 13cms) superbly bound in red straight grained morocco and gold stamped with the insignia of the Prince of Wales, containing six cards (each approx. 7.5cms x 12cms). One contains a hand written message from Sir Thomas Dundas (a Councillor of State to the Prince), dated 2 May 1789, presenting the Prince’s compliments to ‘Mr. Conolly’ and requesting his acceptance of the pocket book and its contents. The other five cards contain detailed plans, and an elevation of Carlton House in London, in watercolour and pen, by Henry Holland, Architect, as follows: * Plan of the Principal Story * Plan of One Pair of Stairs * Plan of the Basement Story * Elevation of the Front next Pall Mall * Plan of the Stables etc and part of the garden. * A unique, significant and beautiful item. As a manuscript, w.a.f. Carlton House, the residence of the Prince of Wales, was substantially rebuilt on a lavish scale in the 1780s by George, son and heir of George III, who maintained here a rival court to that of his father. However, when he eventually succeeded to the throne in 1820 he developed Buckingham Palace as his seat, and Carlton House was demolished.The pocket book may well have been a reward to Thomas Conolly for his support of the prince’s claim to be appointed regent when George III’s mental health deteriorated in 1788; in the event the King recovered and the crisis blew over. €8,000 – 12,000N.B.: Unique and of the utmost importance.

618 The Duchess of Marlborough and The South Sea Bubble Manuscript: Marlborough (Sarah, Duchess of) A lengthy holograph letter of 6pp, dated 10th September 1720, and written from Blenheim [Palace] to Lady Cairnes of Monaghan. As a manuscript, w.a.f. (1) Though unsigned, the letter is written by Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, the brilliant, turbulent and self-willed wife of the Great Duke of Marlborough, statesman and military commander of genius. In it she invites her friend Lady Cairnes, wife of the Irish landowner, banker and MP for Monaghan Sir Alexander Cairnes, to come with her husband to stay at Blenheim. There is plenty of room, she assures her (the mighty palace was still unfinished), though she apologises for “the smoaking chimney in your bed camber” [sic] The Marlboroughs had only been in residence for a year, and as the Duke had suffered several serious strokes the Duchess was very much in charge. The letter was written during the collapse of the South Sea Company, to which the writer alludes. This event, known as the South Sea Bubble, featured an illusory market, frenzied share purchasing, insider trading, bribes to politicians, the recycling of company money, and sheer incompetence (even the slave trade, the most straightforward source of profit, was mismanaged). Many investors were bankrupted, the national economy was severely damaged, politicians were disgraced, and profiteers were heavily fined (though they still remained rich). The Duchess had encouraged her friends to invest heavily - but just before the crash she persuaded the Duke to sell his shares, and the Marlboroughs emerged from the crisis having made a profit of £100,000. €400 - 600

619 First Hand News from the Battlefield of Waterloo, 1815 Manuscript: An important 4pp holograph letter endorsed ‘Susan’s letter 18th: an Account of the Glorious Victory at Waterloo June 20th 1815,’ 4pp, incomplete. As a m/ss, w.a.f. (1) The writer is Susan (nee Charteris), whose husband Lt. Gen. Sir Henry Clinton commanded the Second Division at the Battle of Waterloo. His troops helped to defeat and pursue Napoleon’s Imperial Guard at the end of the battle. The letter is addressed to her mother, widow of the Scottish peer Francis Wemyss Charteris, Lord Elcho. The Clintons were married in 1799. Unhampered by children, Susan was devoted to her husband and accompanied him on campaign. She records in this letter the march to the battlefield, confusion about the general’s baggage, and details of friends who were killed or wounded in the fighting. 620 Charles James Fox to Thomas Conolly Manuscript: Important 3pp holograph from Charles James Fox, written from Cheltenham, and dated 27th August (year not given) to Thomas Conolly of Castletown House, Co. Kildare. As a m/ss, w.a.f. (1) Fox was a leader of the Whig party in English politics during the last quarter of the 18th century. Colourful, idealistic and disorganised, he opposed the authoritarian policies of George III and his long-term prime minister William Pitt, spending most of his political life in opposition. In Ireland one of his principal supporters was Thomas Conolly, who was also his uncle (Fox’s mother Caroline and Conolly’s wife Louisa were two of the famous Lennox sisters). Conolly was MP for Londonderry from 1761 until the Act of Union. In this letter Fox congratulates Conolly on his recent victory; praises him and Grattan for the manner in which they have defended him and the Duke of Portland against “very unfair attacks”, and welcomes the intention to propose Ponsonby rather than Foster for the (Speaker’s) chair.While the year in which the letter was written is not stated, it may well have been 1783, in which a short-lived coalition government headed by Portland (First Lord of the Treasury), Fox (Foreign Secretary) and Lord North (Home Secretary) passed the Renunciation Act, which confirmed the independence of the Irish parliament from that of England. €750 - 1000

[Second day of the Easter Rising.’ Sm. 4to single folded sheet, browned as usual, a few straight folding tears, edges somewhat frayed, but generally a good copy of a very frail and very scarce item. * This was the only publication known to have been printed in the area controlled by the Rebels during the Rising, in a commandeered print works in Halston Street. The material in pages 1-3 may have been prepared in advance, but the ‘Stop Press’ column on page 4, headed ‘The Irish Republic, could not have been written before Tuesday morning as stated. Written by Pearse while under fire in the GPO, it names the members of the Provisional Government, and gives some details (mainly accurate) of the fighting to date. ‘At the moment of writing this report (9.30 a.m., Tuesday) the Republican forces hold all their positions and the British forces have nowhere broken through. There has been heavy and continuous fighting for nearly 24 hours, the casualties of the enemy being much more numerous than those on the Republican side. The Republican forces everywhere are fighting with splendid gallantry ..’ It is printed on the lightest of newsprint, and surviving copies are often in poor condition. Scarce. * Brian Howard (1905 - 1958) was one of the ‘bright young things’ of London Society in the 1920’s. he was well known as a poet but “God Save the King’ - the title is meant ironically - was his only published collection. his later years were characterised by promiscuity, drink, drugs and outrageous behaviour, ending with his suicide following the accidental death of a lover in his bath. There is a Guinness connection with Howard. In 1929 the Hon. Mrs. Bryan Guinness sponsored an exhibition of the works of a hitherto unknown German painter named Bruno Hat. It was a spoof the ‘artist’ was impersonated by Tom Mitford and the paintings were by Brian Howard. €800 - 1200

1. INSPECTION: Ample opportunity is given for inspection and each purchaser by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding by inspection or otherwise as to all the Sale Conditions, the physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired.

2. PROPERTY AND RISK: The property in a lot shall not pass to the buyer until he has paid the purchase price in full but each lot is at the sole risk of the purchaser from the fall of the hammer. Each purchaser shall forthwith give his full names and permanent address and if called upon to do so by the Auctioneer shall forthwith pay to Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers such proportion of the purchase price as the Auctioneer may require. If the purchaser fails to do so, the lot may at the Auctioneer’s sole discretion be put up again and re-sold.

3. REMOVAL OF GOODS: (a) No purchase shall be claimed or removed until the sale has been concluded. All lots shall be paid for and removed at the buyers risk and expense at the end of the Sale, failing which the Auctioneer shall not be responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, and all lots not so removed shall remain at risk of the buyer and subject to the minimum warehousing charges outlined below. If they are not paid for and removed within thirty days of the Sale the Auctioneer may re-sell them by Auction or privately without notice to the buyer. Any liability which there may be on the part of the Auctioneer, in respect of any loss, shall be restricted to a maximum of the price paid by the purchaser of the lot.

(b) Storage and warehousing charges: Please note that there will be no charge to purchasers who collect their lots within one week of the sale. On the Monday following one week after the sale, a transfer and administration charge of €10.00 per lot will be payable and a storage charge of €2.00 per lot per day will then come into effect. These charges are payable by the purchaser to the auctioneer and are subject to VAT.

(c) If any buyer fails to comply with any of the above conditions, the damage recoverable from the defaulter shall include all loss arising from any re-sale of the lot, together with the warehousing charges and expenses in respect of both sales, and any money deposited in part payment shall be held by the auctioneer against the defaulters liability and may be appropriated in settlement of the liability.

4. If within 30 days after the Sale of any item, the Auctioneer receives a notice in writing from the Buyers by Registered Post that such an item is a deliberate forgery, together with the necessary evidence to satisfy the Auctioneers of such an allegation, then the Sale of that item will be rescinded and the net Purchase monies refunded (less any outlays incurred by the Auctioneers) to the Purchaser.

5. In the event of any dispute arising in relation to any of the foregoing, the matter shall be referred to an Independent Arbitrator to be agreed between the parties.

6. Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers may at their option sell at a “hammer price” below the reserve but in any such case the Sale proceeds to which the Seller is entitled shall be the same as they would have been had the Sale been at the Reserve.

7. The Title of any Article or Articles purchased will not pass until the Auctioneers receive full payment for same.

8. Any person purchasing an item or items, whether on behalf of a client or not, is responsible for payment of that item or items.

9. Under no circumstances can the Auctioneers accept Third Party Cheques either in full or Part Payment of any lot.

10. By participating in this Sale, all buyers and bidders agree to be bound by the terms of the conditions of business which appear in the catalogue for Sale.

11. From time to time digital equipment is used to display items for Sale at Auction. This service is merely a reminder to the Client of items viewed previously during View Days. We do not guarantee the quality of the item viewed, the accuracy of the digital image or guarantee the item on display is the item being sold. Disputes arising as a result of digital image display will not be entertained.

12. Live Online Bidding is subject to occasional interruption and loss of connection and audio / digital image streaming. These are technical issues beyond the auctioneers control. We accept no responsibility for any bids missed or omitted as a result of the foregoing.
