September Meeting Program Ham Radio Outlet Opens Their Doors in Milwaukee! By Joe Scheibinger For the September meeting we will have the opportunity to meet Tom Pachner W9TJP, the new General Manager of Ham Radio Outlet in Milwaukee. It was a very sad day when we received the notice that Amateur Radio Electronics in Milwaukee was closing their doors. Most of us remember the days when a road trip to AES was so highly anticipated! Years ago it was wall to wall radios! They even had a wall full of great used radios and communications equipment all put in plastic bags ready for you to take home and enjoy. Slowly we have seen an inventory decrease, the loss of a service department, and the lack of trade-ins change the business model. Some pointed fingers to the Internet and E-bay. Whatever the cause, we always had a friend with AES and always had great service. In a little more than a month after the announcement, the Ham community was stunned to hear that Ham Radio Out-let, a chain similar to AES, purchased the business and opened their doors in August in the same location. A video is being passed around by W9TJP showing a completely renewed business, with walls teaming with radios! Not only that, the radios are set up and working! To see the video, go to https://youtu.be/_jrjyVV2MMg. So what is the new business model? How will it feel to have the largest Ham Radio outlet in the country just one hour from us? Tom Pachner W9TJP will join us via Skype and answer these questions. Not only that, he will take us on a guided tour of the new store with a traveling camera! So bring your credit card just in case you see something you need! Joe K9VY

The last time I was at AES the shelves were pretty bare. This is impressive.

Brat Fry Our second and final Brat Fry of 2016 was held, as usual, at the Lomira Truck Stop on August 26 and 27. On the first day, Friday, the weather was beautiful. Lloyd Vandervoort N9RPU was the first to arrive at about 7:30 am. By the time I got there 20 minutes later with the Hoff Trailer he was already well under way with getting things unpacked. Between the two of us we had the truck unloaded and had started setting things up when Doug Schultz N9EZF ar-rived after stopping at the Bank for change. Rick Robinson NI9Z was another early arrival and helped getting the boil-er and grill fired up.

Rick Robinson NI9Z started off the first burgers while

Doug Schultz Doug Schultz N9EZF supervised.

FOND DU LAC AMATEUR RADIO CLUB Minutes of FDLARC Monthly Meeting Monday, August 8, 2016

New Business We held a moment of silence for the passing of Mike Miller KC9DOA. Mike was a longtime member of our club. The funeral was Saturday at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home in Fond du lac. Our second Brat Fry of the year is scheduled for Aug 26-27 (Friday and Saturday) we need all the help we can get. Please contact Doug Schultz N9EZF if you are able to volunteer. TheRace the Lake event was held on Aug 14. It went well thanks to the help of many volunteers from the club.

Peter Fox KB9WZB made a motion to donate the extra gas grill to Dave McCumber N9WQ to compensate him for allowing us to store our truck at his shop. The motion was seconded by Dave Zitlow K9DUI. The motion carried via a voice vote Jack Heil KG9IN mentioned that he and Marge KC9BEN could host a picnic at their house late September or early October. Paul Bleuel KC9NAA volunteered to head a committee for this. It was suggested that we ask Dennis Paulin KB9OFM to do some smoked meat and/or barbecue for the main course. Attendee's can bring a dish to pass. Dave suggested that we might get A&W root beer floats. Business from the Floor Question was raised as to who has the 746 radios Jack Heil KG9IN has one and Lloyd Vandervoort N9RPU has the other one. Jack has the metal cases for them. Joe Scheibinger K9VY suggested that we participate on working National Parks On The Air. This may be too in-volved as this has to be started a long time ahead. Mike Keys KE7ES is already involved in this. It is possible that we could work with him. There are no national parks nearby us. Joe Scheibinger K9VY suggested getting the Boy Scouts involved in radio. They already have a program for a radio merit badge but the requirements to earn the badge are fairly involved. It could not be done in one or two short ses-

sions with the boys. Adjournment A motion to adjourn was made by Jack Heil KG9IN and seconded by Stan Cram AI0M. The motion carried via a voice vote and the meeting was adjourned at 8:14 pm. The 50/50 Raffle was won by ticket Doug Schultz N9EZF

Elmers:

It has come up several times recently that there is a need for our more experienced members to act

as Elmers for the newer HAMs in the club. The first time this came up I got linked up with Jack Heil

(KG9IN) and have spent many enjoyable hours with him. I’ve learned about hanging an antenna,

contesting and a week or so ago got a super tour of my Yeasu FTDX1200. Most importantly, I finally

got on the air.

At the April meeting we collected the names of several

members who were willing to act as Elmers and the names

of several others who would like their help. With a goal of

linking the two I have listed the names below. I offer it as an

exercise for the student to match Column A to Column B.

License Exams By Doug Schultz If you missed our last testing session in April, we will be hosting license exams again on Oct. 15, 2016 from 9:00 am to Noon at Moraine Park Technical College in Room O-104. If you know of anyone who is interested in getting their ticket, please give them a call. There is also plenty of time to prepare for an upgrade test. Buy the study guide now and divide it up across the weeks from now till October15. Reserve the last three or for weeks for taking practice tests. You should be able to easily pass even the Extra exam with only a few minutes of effort per day from now to October. Be aware that the question pool for the Extra Class Test takes affect on July 1, 2016. If you plan on taking this test you will need to prepare using the new pool.

NOTICES/ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Extra Class Exam Question Pool New Extra Class Element 4 Exams will be used at exam sessions beginning Friday July 1, 2016.

The new exams are drawn from the new extra class question pool which was released in January 2016 by the Ques-tion Pool Committee (QPC) of the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC). The pool and exams created from this pool must be in use starting July 1st. What this means is that if you are studying for the Extra Test you will have to use a new test guide containing the lat-est version of the questions. Don’t let that stop you though. If you’ve been working on it for some time, it won’t be that big an effort to get the new questions and bring yourself up to date.

Logo Ware:

Last spring many members ordered polo shirts with the club logo on the back and name and call sign

over the pocket on the front. The screen printing company, "Imagineers" in Ripon, has the logo and

will print it on many items such as tee shirts, polo shirts, jackets, etc. The prices are reasonable.

They do not need a minimum order and will do one item if it is paid for in advance.

You can call them to order a polo shirt like members got last year or another item, give a credit card number if you do

not want to travel to Ripon, Tom Powell, KC9VXR, who lives in Ripon is willing to bring them to FDL at the next meet-

ing or event. Or, you can come to their store in Ripon to see the many choices they can offer from a wide variety of

clothing manufacturers.

Contact information is listed below. Due to the many manufacturers they buy from the options are too numerous to

put on a website. They do a lot of business with schools in the area also. There are other options for purchase of

club logo wear but this company was chosen last year for their prices, quality, the large variety of items, their good

service, and willingness to do small orders.

Rick paid the setup charge already and estimates the price would be about $125 for others.
