Oftentimes folks wonder about national themes that families and friends may celebrate each month. Especially during pandemic cautious times. In addition to Thanksgiving in the month of November, the following list highlights other opportunities to celebrate in the upcoming month (continued on page four):

Dr. Katherine M. Houghton [email protected]

The Folly Association of Business has been busy as the tourist season comes to a close! With the slowdown of the season, we’re working hard to keep a little extra

business coming in to our members! Since we weren’t able to host the Mermaids and Matey’s Festival we had planned for late September, due to concern of rising Covid numbers, we decided to host another Market Hop on October 1st, where vendors sold their goods at local businesses. From funds raised in the silent auction we donated $500 to the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The purpose of the Market Hops is to bring a little extra business to the business district and help bridge a gap in markets for our vendors, until we’re able to hold festivals again. And who doesn’t enjoy buying local?

We have some funds leftover in our Beautification account and are looking forward to bringing to life some projects that will enhance both the visitor’s experience and be appreciated by locals. We’re working with a local artist to paint a mural on the Center St. side of Mr. John’s Beach Store. We’re also looking forward to assisting with the cost of the landscaping and signage at the new Folly Beach History Museum/ Com-munity Center Library. Also, we will be putting some funds towards interactive kiosks at the Center. Next up, we’ll provide funds for another round of plantings at the newly developed Muriel Edge Shadowrace Park. It’s also important to us to educate our visitors about litter both in the business district and the beach, so some of this money will go to our Litter Committee for signage and other educational tools.

If you are a business owner and would like to join FAB, you’re invited to attend our Membership Drive Party on November 11th from 6-8pm at Loggerhead’s. Membership dues at the party are just $50 for the 2022 year. After the first of the year, it’s $100 to join. Food will be provided from our local restaurants. Exchange Club Awards Public Servants for Outstanding Service

Exchange Club of Folly Beach awarded the Police Officer of the Year to PSO Robert Wheat and the Firefighter of the Year to PSO Keith Nelson. Both deserve a big thank you for their service to the community. A big dinner was held in the back of the firehouse on Thursday, October 21st at 6 p.m. with members, city leaders, Public Safety and city staff attending.

We wish everyone a very wonderful Thanksgiving and be sure to thank the military and first responders for all they do!

From the Mayor’s Desk Now that the ghost and goblins are gone for another year, it is time to dust off our thankful list and reflect on the Blessings we have received this year. I know the Covid ordeal seems to ruin our lives, but it is getting better, and I am sure that you have good things to be thankful for in your life. Like, your health is good, you have family members near, you have a place to live and food to eat, so many things that we sometimes take for granted. Let’s be real thankful for the good weather we have experienced this year and keep the victims of hur-ricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfires in our prayers.

Hot Topic! Trees and underground electrical services! On November 11 at 4pm, we will be holding a City Council work session on the cost of underground electri-cal conversion. You can follow online with live stream-ing, get a copy of the minutes, or get a copy of the rec-orded meeting. This work session is to give the Council some facts and figures that will be some basis for where does the City go from here. It will also give the Home-owners some idea of their incurred cost, if the City moves forward with any underground service project.

November not only brings cooler temperatures, and the Thanksgiving Holiday, but it also brings the lighting of the Christmas tree in the Folly River Park, along with the rest of the decorations on Center Street. The Tree lighting ceremony will be held on Sunday November 28th at 7pm, (an easier way to remember the date is it is the Sunday following Thanksgiving.) I look forward to seeing all the bright little faces once more!

Another exciting announcement; Beach Boogie Music in the Folly River Park on Saturday November 20th, 6-8pm! Come, bring the family, your chairs or blankets, and pos-sibly your pizza, etc. The DJ will be Furman Dominic, The Furm. You will recognize Furman from the Flip Flop Drop. Looking forward to bring some music to the park and hopefully some “Shagging” back to Folly.

Well that is it for right now, as always if you have any questions feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 843 729 0298.

Friends, Like many of you, especially this time of year, I’ve been asked what I am thankful for… This rather open ended question has many answers depending on which lens frames the mental reflection. When I think about Folly Beach, here are my answers: I am thankful to be a part of what I consider a wonderful city team. The city staff here on Folly Beach (left to right, top to bottom) is one filled with professional, thoughtful, resourceful, empathetic, and hard working members. I am thankful for the men and women of the department of public safety who work all the weekends, holidays, long hours away from friends and family to keep this city safe and help the department to meet its mission. I am thankful for the Mayor and Council Members who unabashedly sup-port this agency and provide us what we need to de-liver the best service possible. I am thankful for the less busy season of the year that gives us all a chance to catch our collective breaths and really reminds us of why we love Folly. Selfishly, I am thankful for the great fishing around the island, it is something my family and friends love to do. I am thankful for the sense of community and pride that our residents have, in spite of the difficulties we face as a vacation destination. Lastly, I am so very thankful for the support you as citizens have for our depart-ment. Public Safety as a whole is both a challeng-ing and difficult career path, that said, working in a community that trusts and supports you is a bless-ing…. So thank you. I am thankful for you. I hope you and yours have a safe and healthy start to the holiday season.

Respectfully, Chief Andrew Gilreath Director of Public Safety City of Folly Beach, South Carolina 843-588-7003 [email protected]

The Sandspur

More Shipwrecks

In 1754 a ship captained by Thomas Poole out of Charleston with adverse winds dragged his keel and was broken up on a sand bar. Some equipment from the boat and a chest belonging to him were found at Fort Johnson, but his body washed up on Folly along with part of the boat’s deck, mast, sail, and rigging. In 1766 a ship called the Happy St. Andrew out of Oporto, Spain, travelling to Philadelphia, crashed on a shoal. In 1769 the Rachel and Molly out of Charleston broke up and 4 were lost. In 1782 a brig loaded with rum from the West Indies, burned off the island. Must have been quite a sight.

Yard of the Month by Lynn Ray Smalley

November Yard of the Month recipients, Melissa and Keith Ward, are thankful to raise their family at 419 West Indian so near the surf of Folly.

They personally dug out old beds, retaining the abundance of palmettos and oaks on their corner lot. A retaining wall of pilings was installed to prevent the loss of soil from water runoff. Vibrant yellow plumbago highlights this area with blue-green distylium. A young oak, favored by the daughter of the previous owner, is farther right surrounded with spider plants. Ligustrums and elephant ears line the perimeter with a rusty gray flagstone walkway bisecting this side.

An enveloping old oak is central on the Lempesis side encased by healthy elephant ears and holly ferns. The bed far left supplies an abundance of ginger lilies and Chinese fan palms. Beneath the deep green magnolia a tire swing hangs.

Spikey straw papyrus herald their entrance with the texture of a mature sago palm. Our congratulations to the Wards! Happy Thanksgiving!
