The Diet For a Dynamic You

HealtH Focus

Our hectic lifestyles and stressful careers demand that we be energetic and perform superbly throughout the day. The following tips will increase your energy levels.

Turning food into fuel: Carbohydrates are the most important source of energy. In the absence of carbs, the body uses protein and fats for energy.

Foods to choose: It’s a myth that without carbs, you can’t survive through the day. Here’s a list of energy rich foods you should include in your diet.

Water – Important for the digestion, absorption and transportation of nutrients for energy. Start the day with at least a 500 ml glass of water and consume no less than 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Note that dehydration can cause a

severe lack of energy.

Almonds – Almonds help balance blood sugar levels; they are also a good source of healthy fats and protein.

Bananas – Rich in potassium and vitamin B, bananas help slow digestion and stabilize blood sugar levels.

Coconuts – Consist of nutrients that are quickly and efficiently turned into energy. Consuming coconuts in small quantities, as a part of your dishes, can prevent you from feeling sluggish throughout your day.

Eggs – High in iron and protein, eggs give you sustainable energy throughout the day.

Whole Grains – Get energized with complex carbohydrates, fibre, B vitamins, and iron in whole grains such as wheat, oats or brown rice.

Citrus Fruits – Rich in vitamin C, citrus fruits such as orange and lemon boost the body’s immune system and provide a quick burst of energy.

Yogurt – Containing probiotics well known for aiding digestion, yogurt helps fight a weak immune system and boosts energy levels.

Strategies to De-clutter and Revamp Your Home

Let’s welcome 2015 by clearing things out, getting everything back in order and

making a few changes to freshen up our homes. These five smart strategies will help to

organize and de-clutter your home… making a make a world of difference!

1. Use Your Walls, Not Your Floors

If you have a lot of stuff cluttering up your floors, books placed at the side of your bed,

attractive curios arranged next to a sofa, things placed in various corners -- get it all

off the floor and onto shelves. Most homes have lot

of vertical space left unused, so add some shelves or

storage options on these walls and keep the floors clear.

2. Create the right spaces in your bedside table

To avoid a messy bedside table; create compartments in the top

drawer of your beside table. Make a place for your TV remote,

glasses, phone and other small essentials, leaving the top looking

good with just a pretty lamp and the book you are reading.

3. Fold and Roll T-Shirts and put in Drawers

You could get about many more T-shirts into a drawer by using the fold-and-roll technique. But the

best part is that this method keeps logos and patterns displayed, making it easy for both you and

your kids to find the t-shirt you want.

4. Get rid of Junior’s Junk

Keeping toys that belonged to your children when

they were much younger is just being sentimental.

It maybe the cutest teddy or an adorable baby doll

– these need to be cleared up and passed on. Give

adult children the task of cleaning their childhood

things out and set a strict deadline for it.

5. Sort Out Your Books

Through the years most of us accumulate a lot of books. But the fact remains that once you have read a book, there’s a very small

chance that you’ll read it again. So rather than a large space devoted to storing books, reserve just one or two shelves for books

that you regularly use for reference – such as a dictionary, a phone directory and cookbooks. Donate the rest.

6. Designate a spot for incoming papers. Papers often account for a lot of our clutter. This

is because we put them in different spots — on the counter, on the table, in a drawer, on the

dressing table, in the car. No wonder we can’t find anything quickly! Designate an in-box tray

or drawer in your home and don’t put papers anywhere but that place. Got mail? Put it in the

inbox. Got school papers? Put it in the inbox. Receipts, manuals, notices, flyers? Into the inbox

they go! These can all be sorted out and dealt with whenever you have a little time each evening.

7. Clear out your medicine cabinet. If you don’t have one spot for medicines, create one now – a large box or a

specific drawer can serve the purpose well. Gather together all the medicines lying around the

house and sort them out. Throw out all those which have passed their expiry date. As medicines

are brought into the house place them in this space that you have created for them.

Once you’ve gotten rid of clutter, you will start enjoying the clear uncluttered look

as well as how easy it is to find things. Enjoy it and in future catch clutter and sort

it out as soon as it crops up.
