From thec College Principal’s desk...

In an effort to make our students more socially responsible and to allow them to understand the plight of the less fortunate, the College put out the following plea. We are very thankful to those parents who have supported our cause and sent in donations in both cash and kind. Students will be given points towards charity which contribute towards service points.

In light of World Hunger Day last month, I read that over 800 million people in the world don't have enough to eat!!!

We have various schools in our community and we have met many vulnerable children. Some of the families at these schools don't eat 3 meals a day, many children come to school hungry and sometimes the only food they eat is the food that gets given to them at school. Sadly this is not only true for these schools but many other schools in our country. Children cannot learn on an empty stomach.

So as a teacher and a parent, my plea is to ask you to consider buying some peanut butter and jam and adding it to your grocery carts and send it along with your child. We make peanut butter and jam sandwiches which we donate to these schools every fortnight.

In light of it being Nelson Mandela's centenary year we also appealing for a donation of R30-00 per child so that we can buy a variety of non-perishable goods that we can also donate to these schools and families in our community.

We are also hoping to collect at least 100 blankets in the month of June and thleading up to the 18 July so that we can keep a child warm this winter.

The College currently provides sandwiches to Nokupila Pre Primary School and Takhalang Creche every second week.

COLLEGE SPORT

Despite this being a difficult season for both sports with the addition of some tough new and competitive schools, our students are to be commended for their commitment and tenacity in never giving up. These are qualities that we strive to promote, because even though winning is a goal when participating in team sports, how they play the game and treat their team mates and opponents is what true sportsmanship is all about.

The U16s and Opens played their games against King's Linbro. The Under 16s lost 1-11 and the Opens played a wonderful game and won 13-9.

students played their hearts out until the very end.

The final match of the season was played on Wednesday 30 May against The Under 14s ended off their season with a well-deserved win of 7-4. Under 15s and 16s unfortunately lost 4-18 and 2-14 respectively. The Opens team had a nail-biting game and came back from 2-10 down in the second last quarter to lose narrowly by 3 goals. Jamilla Da-Costa Dah was named player of the game by Summit and we are very proud of this achievement.

A big thank you must also go to Coach Kenny for guiding the Under 14s and Mrs Potgieter who took the Under 15s this season. Your commitment and passion for the sport was certainly inspiring and I am sure the students will agree!

The soccer teams also faced very strong competition this season.

Christ Church proved to be the stronger team against the Under 14's who lost 3-0 and the Opens losing narrowly by 1 goal. The Under 16's won 4-3 and we are very proud of them for this result.

Crawford seemed to have the upper hand against our sides this year winning all the games. However, our players are to be commended for not giving up and pushing themselves till the very end.The final soccer game was against Sacred Heart on Wednesday 6 June.

GRADE 1 OUTING TO THE FARM

“There is nothing that gets students more excited about a school day than a school outing! The Grade One's were super excited that their countdown to The Farm Yard was finally over. Snug in their Winter uniforms and special lunches in hand, students hopped onto the school buses and we made our way to the Wag 'n Bietjie campsite on a glorious Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, students were put into groups and the educational tour began. Of course nothing could have prepared the staff of trained expertise for the mammoth load of questions that would head in their direction! Students watched in awe as staff milked a cow while sharing the nutritional value of dairy. Shrieks of laughter filled the air as students fed chickens that eventually began to chase after them! However, even they could not have anticipated the thrill of riding along on a farm truck while getting an aerial view of the camels and playful monkeys among other curious creatures. It certainly was a memorable day which ended in yawns and naps on the bus ride home."

GRADE 2 OUTING TO THE PEOPLE’S THEATRE

The day finally dawned for the Grade Two outing to the Peoples Theater. The students were thrilled about their very first school trip for the year. They eagerly boarded the school buses for Braamfontein. Excitement escalated upon our arrival and students waited with baited breath for the show's commencement. The show was thoroughly enjoyed by all with shrieks of laughter and tons of amusement filling the air. The talented young cast worked hard and performed their musical pieces beautifully. It was a terrific and charming production. Students were thereafter taken to the park, where their special lunches were devoured. The bus ride home was a quiet one with lots of yawns and sleepy eyes...indeed a reflection of a day well-spent.

2018 MANDELA DAY

Wool is in constant demand during the year at Summerhill School as parents, friends of Summerhill, relatives, students and staff either knit or crochet up a storm. Blocks of 20cm are created in an assortment of colours, lovingly matched and sewn together to fashion one-of-a-kind blankets to keep a special somebody warm this winter. As a school that believes in “spreading” the love, we handed over 48 blankets to Operation Antifreeze to distribute to the many child-headed or impoverished homes; and to students in schools that rely on such organisations as Operation Antifreeze to keep hunger and cold at bay. And as we proudly relinquish our precious cargo of love and warmth the cogs start grinding again in the background as we start preparing to spread the love again in 2019...

PREPARATORY SPORT

Summerhill played 4 fixtures in the last three weeks. The first was against Crawford Fourways on 16 May. Our teams struggled, with all age groups losing except for our Under 10 B-team soccer team. The second fixture was up against Summit and this took place on 23 May. Our Under 9 A and B-teams were the stand-outs with both sides recording victories.

The Boys’ team then played matches against Carlswald House Preparatory. The Under 9 and 10 teams played away. The U9's lost one game and won the other. Good results from the Under 10's meant we recorded two victories. At Summerhill, the Under 13's took on the Carlswald’s Under 13. This match was very one-sided with Summerhill recording an 8 - 0 victory. The last fixture was against Sagewood School; the following results were recorded:

Our soccer girls have carried on their good form for the season and have collected more good results. Our senior girls took on Rosebank Primary at home and won 2-nil against visitors on 18 May. The following Friday, 25 May, the girls played 3 fixtures against Crawford Sandton. The results were as follows:

SUPERSTAR ALERT!

selected to represent Gauteng in the Under 13 Bill Stewart interprovincial soccer tournament taking place in June/July.

Damien Tokarsky-Jennings and Ofentse Mathosa played with great flair to qualify for the Under 13s Gauteng Schools Football Association team to represent their school and Gauteng. They will play in the Bill Stewart Soccer Tournament in Johannesburg from 27 June to 1 July. Summerhill also conveyed their thanks to the coaching department, namely Thulani Mncube, Kegan Marais and Tristan Morris, the coach, and teachers respectively. They thanked them for their hard work during the preparation of the learners, their support throughout the trip and their support during this year’s matches.

Our Netball team have had three fixtures in the past two weeks. On 16 May we took on Christchurch with our Under 10 A and 11 A recording victories and the Under 12's and 13's losing narrowly. Our next fixture on 21 May, Summerhill took on the Kings’ Linbro Park. Our Under 11s drew their match 8 - 8 in a very close affair. The Under 12's and Under 13's lost their matches but were very competitive. The last fixture we have played was against Kyalami Preparatory School. The Under 11 team continued its strong run and won their matches. Since participation is high in our practices, Summerhill is able to field an A and B side in all age groups against Kyalami. Well done to the girls for their strong turnout. On Saturday, 26 May, Redhill and Saheti Schools, hosted a B, C and D festival. Summerhill was able to send an U10 to U13 B-sides these the festivals. No scores were recorded but the team had the chance to play and have fun against similar strength opposition and have fun on a sunny morning. Well done to all the girls that took part!

SUPERSTAR SOFTBALL ALERT: has been selected into the initial training squad, of 38 players, for the

Johannesburg Softball Association. Players will be eliminated until a team of 12 is chosen. The selected team will go on tour to North West Province for the Inter-Regional Tournament to be held in December. Good luck to Raquel who will start training with the squad later this Month.

A number of Summerhill School students participated in the JKA South Africa National Karate Championships, held Saturday 19th May, at Beaulieu College. Each student performed extremely well and a few of them won medals.

On Saturday 2 June 2018 Suaney Scott became South Africa's National Child Handler in dog showing. Mr. Jonathan Mesach from Indonesia was the judge who selected her out of the 4 finalists that were drawn on the Friday to be the winner. Suaney was the youngest competitor in her age class of 8-12 years old (being only 9 years old), and the child who has shown dogs for the shortest period of time out of competitors. In the breed shows during the weekend, Suaney was also the only child who won a Best Veteran in Show as well as a Reserve Best Veteran in show, proving that she and Rascal (her dog) are a team to be reckoned with.

Thank you to Kimberly Vernava for organising half a tonne of glass for our glass recycling project!!! We really appreciate it....AND for her HUGE contribution to our paper recycling initiative!!
