scott’s last expedition the Journals of captain R. F. scott

More than a century on from Captain Scott’s ill-fated 1911 expedition to the

South Pole, the tale of endurance and self-sacrifice recorded in his journal

remains a testament to the heroism of his enterprise. Scott’s journal, found

on his body eight months after his death, retains the power to move us. This

complete edition includes J. M. Barrie’s introduction from the 1914 edition

and over 80 photographs, most by the expediton photographer Herbert

Ponting, sourced from the Scott Polar Research Institute.

the selfish giant and other stories

oscar wilde

Novelist, playwright and satirist Oscar Wilde was also an incomparable teller

of fairy tales. In these stories written for his two sons, he takes the elements of

faerie since time immemorial – giants and princes, fishermen and mermaids –

and creates enchanting, heartfelt fables that rank among his best-loved works.

Award-winning author Jeanette Winterson has contributed a new introduction,

placing these stories at the heart of Wilde’s career.

Tumbling headlong down a rabbit-hole, Alice enters the magical underground

kingdom of Wonderland. Here she changes size at inconvenient moments, plays

croquet with the Queen of Hearts and stumbles upon the Mad Hatter’s tea-

party. In her second adventure, through the looking-glass, Alice finds that life is a

game of chess in which she is a pawn. John Tenniel’s iconic illustrations, featured

in both volumes, remain as delightful and as surreal as when first published.

wuthering heights emily brontë

A passionate love story, a haunting gothic tale, a stark depiction of rural isolation

and cruelty … Wuthering Heights defies easy classification. Introducing this

edition, Patti Smith, the singer-songwriter and poet, sums up Emily Brontë’s

complex gifts: ‘Her untied mind did not create a neat package. In the writing of

Wuthering Heights she did not give what was wanted; she gave what she had.’

the great gatsby f. scott fitzgerald

One summer on Long Island, Nick Carraway befriends neighbour Jay Gatsby, whose

parties at his mansion are as lavish as his past is mysterious. In Fitzgerald’s hands, this

story becomes a near-perfect work of art, told in hauntingly beautiful prose.

With subtle, powerful illustrations by Sam Wolfe Connelly, this edition is introduced

by Pulitzer-Prize-winning critic Michael Dirda and contains a personal note by

director Francis Ford Coppola, recalling his work on the 1974 film adaptation. The

slipcase and metallic endpapers are both printed with a 1920s-inspired design.

the bhagavad gita

A prince stands on a battlefield between two armies. He has relatives and friends

in both. Gripped by despair, Prince Arjuna is ready to accept death until his

charioteer, the god Krishna, provides enlightenment. Written around 2,000 years

ago, The Bhagavad Gita is part of the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata, but stands

alone as a cornerstone of the Hindu faith and a beautiful work of Sanskrit poetry.

This edition uses the translation by Juan Mascaró, acclaimed for its deeply

sympathetic portrayal of the lyricism of the original. Anna Bhushan has created

a series of vibrant illustrations integrated within the text.
