INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION
EXTERNAL CONDOM CATHETERS ARE PREFERRED THAN FOLEY’S CATHETER IN HEAD INJURED PATIENTS
THERE IS CONTROVERSY REGARDING THE INCIDENCE OF PENILE SKIN NECROSIS , POOR PERSONAL HYGIENE AND DEPENDENT EDEMA IN THE PERINEAL REGION OF PATIENTS WITH CONDOM CATHETERS
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
COMPARISION BETWEEN EXTERNAL CONDOM CATHETER AND FOLEY’S CATHETER IN BED RIDDEN HEAD INJURED PATIENTS
MATERIALS AND METHODS DURATION OF STUDY – ONE MONTH (SEP 2009)
PLACE OF STUDY – TC 3 ICU OF JPNATC, AIIMS
INCLUSION CRITERIA: ALL ADULT (>12 YRS ) PATIENTS WITH HEAD INJURY ADMITTED IN NSICU
MATERIALS AND METHODSPENILE & PERINEAL ULCERATION,
PERINEAL EDEMA & URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI) WERE USED AS OUTCOME PARAMETERS
TLC AND URINE C/S WERE USED AS MARKER FOR INFECTION
OBSERVATIONS
NO OF PATIENTS – 20
NO OF PATIENTS WITH EXTERNAL CATHETER – 10
NO OF PATIENTS WITH FOLEY’S CATHETER – 10

REVIEW OF LITERATUREREVIEW OF LITERATURESanjay saint et al found in his study
that the use of external catheter are less likely to cause bacteriuria, symptomatic UTI, or death than the use of indwelling catheters.

CONCLUSIONCONCLUSIONIt was found that external
catheter is preferable to Foley's catheter in male head injured patients as it does not increase the risk of UTI and urethral injuries .
However care should be taken regarding proper application of external catheter to avoid penile ulceration and penile edema.
