Folens School At Home: Infants Weekly Plan: Week 3 Introduction The purpose of Folens School at Home is to help parents support their child’s learning at home. Shortly after schools closed, we at Folens made all of our resources available for parents to use on FolensOnline. However, we understand that parents may not feel they have the time or expertise to pick and choose the most suitable activities for their child across multiple subjects. So, we turned to some experienced primary school teachers and asked them to put together a weekly plan for parents to use at home with their child. The purpose of the plan is to identify age-appropriate resources that can be used to help children learn and to provide some guidance to parents when using them. Each week, we will publish a new plan and accompanying digital resources for each of the three core subjects, English, Irish and Maths, as well SESE (History, Geography and Science). *We at Folens appreciate that these are challenging times for everyone and that many parents will have a limited amount of time to support their child’s learning. There is no pressure to complete every activity in the weekly plan – it can simply be used as a menu from which parents can pick and choose. Accessing the digital resources The digital resources can all be accessed from FolensOnline. For ease of use, we have included a link to each resource in the plan just below the thumbnail image of the resource. NB: In order to launch each resource, you will need to a) be logged into FolensOnline and b) copy and paste the link from the plan into your browser. Launch Big Book 12 - Kate’s Cool Hat. Read through the text. Pause from time to time to allow your child to predict what is happening in the pictures and to make connections with their own life. Ask questions, such as:

• If you were at the zoo, which animals would you choose to visit and why?

• Kate wore her new safari hat. What else is it important to wear on a sunny day?

You can use the spotlight tool to draw attention to certain words, e.g. hat, zoo, animals, map, tigers, leaves, paw, fence, giraffes, zebras, rhino, monkey, branches, jaws, wind, tails, face. During reading, ask some or all of the following comprehension questions.

1. Do you think the zookeeper will go into the enclosure right away to fetch Kate’s hat? Explain your answer.

2. How would you feel if you held something that had been in a tiger’s jaws? Scared? Excited? Something else?

3. Why do you think the sign says ‘Do not feed the animals’? 4. Did Kate mind that the monkey made a face at her? How do

you know? 5. Why do you think the zookeeper said, ‘I’m afraid’? Was he

frightened of something? 6. How do you think the zookeeper felt when he was giving Kate

back her hat? After reading, ask some or all of the following phonics questions.

1. Find words that contain the sound /or/, e.g. horn. Can you think of other words that contain this sound?

2. Find words that contain the short sound /oo/, e.g. foot. Can you think of other words that contain this sound?

3. Find the tricky words: one, these and them.

Maths Activity 1: Number

https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/PlanetMaths/PMSI/resources/activitya/pm_si_029/index.html

Around this time of year, children revise the number stories. Here we will revise the number 6. To introduce the topic, play the ‘I can show the number six in many ways’ video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anYJvL9kZoU&t=4s Launch the number 6 video and watch it together. Practice making sets of 6 using concrete materials (cubes, counters, pieces of lego) at home. Look for the number 6 at home and when out and about (house numbers, car registrations etc). Ask your child, how many ways can you make the story of 6? e.g. 4+2=6, 6=5+1 Now ask, can you use counters to show the number 6 on a ten frame? See below. Print out the Number 6 worksheet at the end of this document. Have your child complete the sheet. Finally, launch and play the adding game ‘Count’ on Folensonline.

The objective of this lesson is for your child to recognise and name the following coins: Junior Infants: 1c, 2c, 5c Senior Infants: 1c, 2c, 5, 10c, 20c Gather lots of these coins for your child. Discuss the coins and the images on them. Ask your child to sort them in different ways (by colour, by size, by value). Ask your child to order the coins from the least value to the highest value. Complete the ‘Money’ digital activities on Folensonline (recognising coins and ordering coins).

SESE (Social, Economic, Scientific Education) Activity 1: The Children of Lir

History: The Children of Lir

Launch Senior Infants Lesson 08. Water: History. Play the story of the Children of Lir and listen to it with your child. After listening to the story, ask your child the following questions:

• Why did Queen Aoife change the children into swans?

• How do you think the children felt? Next, launch the True/False activity. Ask your child to listen to the statements and decide whether they are true or false. Encourage he or she to explain their answers to you. Finally, print out the worksheet (SESE: Activity 1: The Children of Lir) at the end of this document and have your child complete it by drawing a picture in each box to tell the story. Ask your child to retell the story to you, explaining their pictures.

Activity 2: Floating and Sinking

Science: Floating and Sinking

Launch Senior Infants lesson 08. Water: Science. Play the explanation of how things float and sink. Watch and listen to it together. Discuss the explanation with your child. Watch out for the misconception that the bigger or heavier something is, the more likely it is to sink. Next, print the worksheet (SESE: Activity 2: Floating and Sinking) at the end of this document. Gather the materials listed on the sinking and floating worksheet below. Encourage your child to look at and feel each object in the investigation. Record your child’s prediction on the worksheet. Test each object one at a time by placing it in the water. Did the object float or sink? Record the results in the table. Finally, launch the floating and sinking sorting activity on Folensonline. Sort the items based on whether they float or sink.
